Hello,

I am planning to get the eldar jetbikes, but it seems to be costing me more than getting the shinning spear when it comes to money matters.

May I ask eldar players if it is possible to purchase the shinning spear instead and not install their lances, and yet still can be consiered eldar jetbikes? Are the hands attached to the lances?

Thanks for the feedback.

The shining spears box has three complete guardian jetbike sprues with some metal bits to make them shining spears.

Correct. Build them as jetbikes and, if you wish, flog the metal bitz on eBay.

Anybody has idea if Shining Spear is:

1.) Better than the regular Jetbikes (shuriken catapault and a lance)?
2.) Is Shining Spear only good for vehicles and large creatures/mechs?
3.) How many Shining Spears do you usually field in any point game from 750 and up?
4.) Are they replacements for the regular Jetbikes?

Care to share your thoughts regarding the Shining Spears?

Together with Swooping Hawks, Shining Spears are often criticised as one of the weakest units in the Codex.

I think this is a little unfair because unlike Hawks they look good on paper until you factor in the points cost.

Jetbikes with S6 power weapons on the charge? Yes please. Just a shame they cost more than a Storm Shield Terminator...

I think there are two ways you can use them - (1) as a minimum squad of 3. Use them as a harrassment unit to pick off small squads you have already weakened through shooting (useful against units such as devastators) and light vehicles; (2) as a support squad for a Jetbike autarch (in which case you'll need to spend points on the exarch with Withdraw). The main problem with the second option is that it's difficult to justify over Jetlocks and a Farseer which is competitively a superior choice.

Also remember that unlike Guardian Jetbikes they are not scoring units. The fact that they have no access to grenades also limits their effectiveness as an assault unit somewhat.

I actually use 2 full squads of them in my exodite army as a blunt assault hammer. If you get enouugh of them out there they can be fairly effecient, but they really do need the exarch with withdraw to maximize the number of charges you get off for the best use of your spear. Alhough I do have to agree they are a little over priced for what you get and if not for the theme I had been aiming for would probably pass them over for other choices.

Some quick answers:

1. No, because you must choose one or the other, and neither are that great. You have better flexibility thanks to two weapon systems, but the price you pay is dear.

2. Yes, because Str 6 Lance power weapons that can be fired before the charge really are asking for expensive, high-Toughness low-save infantry or vehicles to attack. They need to kill what they assault immediately and vanish, for the lances only count as power weapons in the initial assault and if they're bogged down in CC they will die. Horribly.

3. Absolutely NOT a Guardian Jetbike replacement - they're far more expensive, can't claim objectives, and their max squad size is a liability. Also, no chance for a Warlock with Conceal or Embolden. Your opponent, if clever, will know how much the Spears cost and how fragile they really are, and will make some effort to eliminate them, which can be easily done.

Oh, I forgot: Spears don't come with any grenades, so don't attack anything in cover. Some players get around that by putting an Autarch with mandihat in the squad, and he adds some much-needed punch. And then that squad is even more expensive.

I'll never tell you not to run them, even if your only justification is "the minis are nice" that's good reason to field them. Just bear in mind, in an army of fragile specialist units, they're more fragile and specialist than most.

Like everyone else said they team pretty good with autarch with manidiblasters laserlance jetbike and reaper launcher( personal favorite, very versitile) and you have another HQ slot for that seer council on jetbikes (great combo, takes pressure off one or the other)

They are a cool unit in an all jetbike army or Aspect Warrior army. Wont win games but great for assassinations

The Shining Spear box probably doesn't come with the pennants that the jetbike box comes with, right?

The jetbike box had three flags and the jetbike+shrieker cannon had different ones (a problem if you wanted all to be from the same craftworld). But that was a long time ago - has it changed?

The last Spears box I bought four years ago had no pennants.

Mind you they make one hell of a counter-charge unit. See if those terminators want to come within range of your gaurdians if they know they'll get charged by a bunch of S6-8 power weapons..

If they have stormshields, then yes. Even without their 5++ save helps them quite a bit.
