I was wondering if there is any website that takes the marvelously complex game we know and love and allows us to play it online. If so, how does it work and how does one utilize it/ play games on it?

There may be one that follows a similar, turn based style to warhammer, but I doubt GW would want thier IP to be used like that, as it would clash with the tabletop version (although saying that, the Blood Bowl PC game is an exact copy and even comes with a pdf of the rulebook!).

The closest you'll probably get are either Mark of Chaos, which is kind of like a cross between total war and an rpg, a russian-made mod for Medieval total war II called 'Call of Warhammer' and I believe there are also some mods for the Sid Mier's Civilisation series which are Warhammer-y, but not as battle orientated as you might like.

Was it available through vassal at one point?

If you want to go old school, there was Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen for PS1.

That's the closest thing that I know of.

Actually, those were PC games orginally, you should play them with PC anyway, much better controls. Dark omen even has multiplayer, with humans, undead and O&G as playable races...;)

Dark Omen was available on PC as well (and rocked). I think the same applies to SotHR, but I don't know for certain.

And there's Mark of Chaos for a more Real Time feel to it.

And of course, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning for a very personal view of the action.

I haven't used the feature myself, but there's this thing called WFO (Warhammer Fantasy Online) over on Carpe Noctem that lets you play a simulated game of Warhammer over the internet with the help of some specifically adapted software. Go ahead and take a look at it.

Yeah, there was a Vassal module for FB, but GW's army of flying monkey lawyers crushed it :D

Dark Omen was awesome on the PC and had a few extra races modded in iirc. Looks like it still has an active community from a quick google.
