View Full Version : What sort of environment are the Easterlings from?

Basic question really, what sort of landscape is 'home' to an Easterling?

Plains and forests, I guess.

Hmm.. what about Khand? What's that like environmentally?

Most definately plains or steppes. Think Mongolia.

Yeah that's what I figured.. the trouble with steppes is that they're really boring, lol.

This must all seem very cryptic.. basically I'm thinking of doing an orc/general evil army themed around one of the more far-off regions, and am after terrain that can be used to theme the models.

At the moment Harad seems the best choice, desert dwelling orcs could be interesting.

Easterlings in long grass/bamboo could be interesting...

Perhaps, but it runs the risk of getting a bit too exagerated I think.

Long grasses, then. No more than knee height.

Looking at the map on page 6 in Shadow in the East there are some interesting locations around the Sea of Rhun - Temple cities, a large forest/jungle and a ruined Dwarfhold (an ideal dwelling for Orcs or Goblins!).

Climatologically, there probably wouldn't be to much jungle there. It should be just too dry.

"On screen, the Easterlings wear scale mail armor often covering the middle of the chest with a neck plate and are armed with long pikes, scimitars and rectangular metal shields. Their armor is inscribed with a script which resembles both Tengwar and Arabic."

Given their looks and weaponry, perhaps desert-like climate? The fact that there are tribes... IŽd say at least tundra. (Yes, Mongolia would fit in).

The Arabic theme definitly fits with Harad, but there are Minor Asia/Persian influences too, IMHO.

EDIT: "Much of Far Harad was a jungle, although there also was a desert."
Definitly, Persian.

I'd use yellow/brown static grass and go with your usual basing techniques. That way they sort of just blend in with most other terrain types, yet still look unique.

Rhun and Khand are largely steppes, think a drier version of rohan. Khand, being closer to mordor and more southern would probably be warmer than Rhun but would also have some elements of a more mordorian landscape: sharp rocks, ash as a componant of the earth etc.
