I was wondering if anyone could help, I love going around looking for random factions that are GW legal (no fan codexes) so in vanilla 40k how many Playable factions are there? (counting past codexes that are unique, Eg, craftworld eldar and assassins, but not Second edition eldar )

Space Marines
Blood Angels
Dark Templars
Space wolves
Grey knights
Daemon Hunters (counted as different to grey knights for personal reasons)
Tau empire
Eldar
Craftworld Eldar
Dark Eldar
Necrons
Sisters of battle
Orks
Daemons
Chaos Space Marines
Kroot mercenaries
Feral Orks

Anymore would be great :D

I'd say Black Templars (Unless that's what you mean by Dark Templars) Exodites (Unless that comes under generic Eldar) and general Inquisition which doesn't come under Daemon Hunters (Witch Hunters springs to mind).

I did mean Black Templars >.< I got them mixed with Dark Angels And did the Inquisition have their own codex?

Imperial Guard. Possibly Catachans if you had an understanding opponant. Salamanders and Armageddon IDF had varient lists in the Armageddon book. Witch-hunters.

Fair enough, well the Inquisition was certainly playable with the Daemon Hunter and Witch Hunter codices. And you need to put Assassins down as well.

And i'm not after codexes that are currently usable, i'm after unique codexs that could've been used at some point

All the forge world lists. They're not fan made, they are official GW lists, and most say so.
So Armoured company
Armoured battlegroup
Elysians
Death Korp of Kreig
Servants of Slaughter ( khorne traitors)
Servants of Decay ( Nurgle traitors)
are all the human ones. I can't list the others from memory...

Citadel Journal.

It was also available for download as pdf on the website once, when the website was still cool.

There was also the Genestealer Invasion Force (like the cult but had Genestealers as the only troops option).

White Scars had their own list too.

Red Scorpions (When agreed on, I use their rules for my successor chapter, Astral Scorpions. In some games that can be a LOT of FNP!)
