View Full Version : Ever thought about an army theme song?

Don't know about any of you chaps, but have you ever heard a song/poem that has inspired you to write an army list (and background etc?). I had that experiance recently, with two armies.

The first was with a song by a death metal band by the name of Bloodbath, and a song of theirs called "Bastard Son of God". The Lyrics are thus;
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He is hater of the rotten Earth
He is the nova that will drape the sky in woe
We drink from his poisoned water
He is lord of those who dwell bound in sickness
Spitting vomit in the face of faith
Cleansing us who must atone for being weak
We drink from his poisoned water
He is the shadow cast upon those defiled

Oh, Victorious call
It will not befall
No salvation is free
Death comes beckoning thee
Encircle thee
Voices come in wind
Son of perdition
You come beckoning me

The sky embedded in the death of a nova
Effigy is seen in a second of light
No voice in the crack of his mouth
Bastard son of God
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They inspired me to write a 40k Plague Marine army :D

Next was a song by (another) death metal band, Decapitated. The song was "Three Dimensional-Defect".
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blinding void veils colours.
All features melt into one vision.
All-absorbing and all-swallowing time
The singing of the black hole is calling.
The shrill silence of universe
Blows up all minds from inside.
Desire of your own death makes flesh burst into flame.
Another moment of senseless reasoning
Opens the gate to the real existence
That is not for the eyes.
Inexpressible pain of the ripped flesh
Releases so far unknown senses.
No chance for losing consciousness.
Suffering in the thickening void.
Stop! Human defect is triumphing.
The passage into fourth dimension
Is passing out of sight.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This led me to write up a Thousand Son List.

I think both songs are quite themey towards Nurlge and Tzeentch, and pretty much as soon as I heard them I had to go write the lists.

Ever had any experiances like these?:D

i like restless intolerance, for my DA army.
4. Relentless Intolerance

These eyes, they will gaze and reflect
And gauge every thought I reject
No sway of stance in changing times
Just a narrow mind commanding respect
We stand on the words of the wise
And languish every call to despise
We know the hollow wound of their lies

[Pre-chorus:]
No reformed edition
Never losing vision
Now into forever
Only getting better
Ways of now, spiral down
How much more we allow

[Chorus:]
Keeping sight of the vow we made
Holding fast to the hope
So when we stand in the line of wrath
The true and righteous will know

The foundation that we used to uphold
Now regarded as the madness of old
Every alteration made to the standard of truth
Is a nail in the coffin we hold
We embody everything they despise
Because they see us through degenerated eyes
So when they cast you down as intolerant filth
Stand firm, never bow to the lies

[Pre-chorus]

[Chorus]

See the scorn inside my eyes

[Chorus]

I've got a great song, pumps me up to do anything. It's called "Sandstorm," by DaRude. The lyrics go as follows:

Catchy, isn't it?

We’re the princes of the universe.
Here we belong, fighting to survive.

And here we are, we’re the princes of the universe.
Here we belong, fighting for survival.

Don't know about any of you chaps, but have you ever heard a song/poem that has inspired you to write an army list (and background etc?).
Always. My Khornate army was inspired by Creature of the Wheel by White Zombie. The lines

New God kill machine
And man say Lord
Of the engines

made me want a chaotic force centered around a techmarine, who had risen to championhood. Thus, Gorgar the Machine Beast (http://portal.miun.se/~dast0100/aighcron/army_Ravagers.html) and his Ravagers was born. His name is also taken from a Helloween song ;)

These things happen all the time. Music stirs my imagination in weird ways.

Tau - Princes of the Universe.

"Here we are, born to be kings.
We’re the princes of the universe.
Here we belong, fighting to survive.
In a world with the darkest powers.
And here we are, we’re the princes of the universe.
Here we belong, fighting for survival.
We’ve come to be the rulers of your world."

Damn, you beat me to it. Although for me it also worked for my guard.

Edit: I forgot "another one bites the dust" even more so for my guard.

For my army ... sweet home alabama!

However, a friend of mine in birmingham alabama really does have a fight song for his army. His spacemarine chapter is based entirely on the University of Alabama's football team. Complete with Primarch "The Bear." (as a note he doesnt have a model for The Bear because games workshop or forgeworld dont make rules good enough for someone to be "the bear." his logic is if the model could loose then its not good enough to be "the bear.") Anyway, he also has Namath and all the other great playes in the schools history.

Anyway, his dreadnaught has a little button on the base. when you press the button the dreadnaught actually plays "Yeah Alabama" from a small speaker inside the dreadnaught. and he presses the button every time the dreadnaught moves, shoots or assaults. couple pics to give you an idea.

http://www.geocities.com/wh40kpictures/crimsontidedreadnaughts1.JPG

http://www.geocities.com/wh40kpictures/crimsontidestandarbearer1.JPG

For anyone who knows anything about college football imagine an entire army of these guys charging across the field with "Yeah Alabama" (http://home.comcast.net/~midimusic2006/mp3/sec/Alabama__Yea_Alabama.mp3) playing in the background. People will shoot the dreadnaught, instead of more important targets, just to make him quit playing the fight song!

Yes, we know about Spacemarine chapter fight songs very well and how irritating they can be.

For my Iron Hands, nothing beats "Metal Warriors (Brothers of Metal Pt. 1)" by Manowar.

2. Metal Warriors (Brothers Of Metal Pt. I)

Every one of us has heard the call
Brothers of True Metal proud and standing tall
We know the power within us has brought us to this hall
there's magic in the metal there's magic is us all

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers go on get out
Leave the hall

Now the world must listen to our decree
We don't turn down for anyone we do just what we please
got to make it louder, all men play on ten
If you're not into metal, you are not my friend

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers I said
Leave the hall

Now the world must listen to our decree
We don't turn down for anyone we do just what we please
Got to make it louder, all men play on ten
If you're not into metal, you are not my friend

There's metal in the air tonite, can you hear it call
If you ain't got the balls, to take it you can
Leave the hall

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Metallica... good all-around battle-song, but especially good for Imperial Guard.

Of Wolf and Man, also by Metallica... Definitely a no-brainer there. ;)

I always thought Princes of the Universe was more Eldar-ish than Tau.

Bodies by Drowning Pool is great for Khorne Flakes.

Not for 40k, but Hands of Doom by Manowar is pretty good as a theme song for the entirety of Storm of Chaos.

For the Waaaagh-
"It's a Fight" , "Teenage Violators", "Live For Now", Fight 'Em All" by Iron Cross. "Ready to Fight" by Negative Approach.
Or "Chip on My Shoulder" by Slapshot. Or "World Peace" by the Cro-Mags.
Or "Someone's Gonna Die" by Blitz.
Metal songs are too damned long. All that ridiculous guitar noodling..god, you'd think they thought music was supposed to be creative or something:) What a waste of time. ORKS NEEDS DA FITE SONGS!

Prog-Metal, power-metal, et cetera makes sense for Marines, though. Thrash only works for the Chaotics. Either way, it's usually pompous, overwrought, faintly unaware of it's own silliness. Like many Ultramarines, and their franchise Chapters:)
Inquisitors, and their twisted worldview, are as likely as not to be drawn to the most pessimistic and depraved of Nordic Black Metal.

And for some damned reason, I see Guard listening to, like, Creedence. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

Light of the Emperor

Ultramarines- "I'm blue" by Eiffel 65 :D

Seriously though, for psyker armies, especially Thousand Sons and librarian heavy chapters: "With My Mind" by Cold. It's the "unsanctioned" theme song of my Inquisitor Cell army.

"In a violent world, where deceptions free. Things I can't control, taking over me. Did they try to take my identity? So what the hell have they done to me? I will take your thoughts away, and I'll ignite your fear today. And I will take you far away with my mind, with my mind"

For my Tanith Ghosts it's usually 'Sing for Absolution' by Muse as I reckon it could be an Imperial Hymn anyway:angel: , but sometimes 'Play Dead' by Bjork or any bagpipe march, didn't inspire me to start the army but need when painting or playing.

For my space wolves it's either 'Hysteria' by Muse or 'Thunderstruck' By AC/DC

Incidentally if there is ever a 40k film it should be soundtracked by Muse - no one else would do it justice;) .

The song from the old Manga Trailer that used to be on all the Manga videos from the first wave of the Great UK Animé Boom back in 1993-4.

No lyrics just "Uh!" every now and then and a sample of someone saying "Whats happening to me?" over the end (which iirc was Tetsuo falling out of the hospital building in Akira).

Does anyone know what that track was or was it just something concieved and used for that trailer?

That was Refuse/Resist by the mighty Sepultura (before Max Cavalera left) from the appropriately titled Chaos A.D. album. Very apt for any of the Chaos legions.

I always thought that Tubthumping by Chumbawamba was pretty appropriate for the Necrons, with the whole, "I get knocked out, but I get up again!" thing... :D

A few other contributions that sprang to mind...

Necrons: Zero Signal by Fear Factory.

Dark Angels: Anything by Enigma... or the first movement of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.(Oh, Fortuna)

Nurgle: Down With the Sickness by Disturbed.

Chaos Undivided: Cold by Static X.

Space Wolves: Of Wolf & Man by Metallica.

Speed Freeks: Creature of the Wheel by White Zombie.

Ultramarines: What about me? by ???. ;)

For my Nids I sometimes brought my accoustic guitar and played another Mercury tune with different lyrics "Oh yes, I´m the great devourer..."
AdMech Forces benefit from many tracks of Frontline Assemblys "Tactical Neural Implant", Bio-Mechanic being an obvious choice.
Tau - "One Vision"
Dark Eldar: "I´m a slave for you", by B.Spears.
My Slaanesh army tended to march to war with Iggy, David or Lou playing. Sometimes Sonic youth as well.
Crass are great for Orks, just from a musical standpoint. DEVO too.
Eldar: Cibo Matto or the Sugarcubes

For an IG Armoured Company I can think of no better theme song than "Panzer Battalion" by Sabaton:

Under this sun no shadows will fall
piercing our eyes as we charge
an armoured battalion on course to the east
closing the end of it’s march

This time we’re here to finish a job
started a decade ago
driving the animals out of their holes
to bury them 6 feet below

Armoured tanks of mass destruction
killers in the east
rats who dares to stand before us
feel our guns go live

Death in the shape of a panzer battalion
insect of terror don’t run face your fate like a man
cannot outrun our panzer battalion

Thousands of tons of armour and guns
making it’s way through the sand
our panzer battalion is back for revenge
artillery sweeping the land

First strike is ours no mercy is shown
there’s rivers of blood in our track
breaking their lines of defence with our tanks
infantry watching our back

Blow their SAM sites clear for air strike
ready for the storm
minefields swept there’s no surrender
feel our napalm burn

Under this sun no shadows will fall
piercing our eyes as we charge
an armoured battalion on course to the east
has reached the end of it’s march:skull:

In my opinion, old gothic music rocks refered to Warhammer 40K.

" Gothic " song from Gothic Album ( Paradise Lost ). Also The Eternal, Shattered or Desolate.

" Fix ", " Lights " or " Neverland " from The Sisters of Mercy.

I have to go. I'll continue later.

AC/DC 'Big Balls' for my Imperial Guard

AC/DC 'If You Want Blood (You Got It!)' for my World Eaters
Europe 'The Final Countdown' (seen it live :D!) for my Grey Knights

The Imperial March for almost any loyalist or traitor marine army.

If I collected Imperial Guard:
"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit.
These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground.
Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune.
If you have a problem,
If no one else can help,
And if you can find them,
Maybe you can hire;
The A-Team *dakka dakka dakka*..."

"Panzer Division Marduk" by Marduk for an Armoured Company :D
"A Skin for Dancing In" by Akercocke for any Slaanesh army

Slayer - Point

I'm the one that brings you war
Infiltrate unguarded shores
Master of afflicting pain
Point is where all die
[Lead: King]
I'm the one to taste your blood
Trashing though the crimson mud
Messenger of all demise
Point is where I reign
Piercing, impaling, no judgement, just punishment
Discreate, annihilate assault with no regret
I'm the one to taste your death
Basking in your dying breath
Messenger of all demise
Point is where all die
Piercing, impaling no judgement, just punishment
Discreate, annihilate assault with no regret
Born to kill sweep and clear
Staring down the face of fear
Shrapnel flies dehumanize
Flesh and blood will fertilize
Empty all the magazines
Lethal spray from M-16's
Pace the march and sing the song
Right the ******* where I belong
Stained in blood
No fear - no sound
Penetrate your holy ground
Leave you where your comrades lie
Point is where all die
Pure destruction has begun
Fearlessly the battle's won
Spread extinction through the dawn
Signature of wrath is spawned
Minister of death unleashed
My lust for war will never cease
With no remorse I watch you die
Body count's the bottom line
Crashing slashing to the end
Your final pulse has just been spent
Leave you where your comrades lie
Point is where all ********** die
[Lead: Hanneman]
Crashing slashing to the end
Your final pulse has just been spent
Leave you where your comrades lie
Stained in blood
No fear - no pain - no life
[Lead: King]
Clouded skies rain only death
Silence all opposing threats
Quench the hunger of my gun
Exploding cities overrun
I'm the one to taste your death
Basking in your dying breath
Messenger of all demise
Point is where all die

KMFDM - Waste

What I don't know I don't like
What I don't like I don't want
What I don't want I waste
I hypnotize with alibis and fingers made of lead
I sympathize with frozen eyes turned inwards in my head
I realize to my demise it's better left unsaid
That columns crash down endlessly and I will end up dead
I theorize I'm on the rise
But all I do is fall
I victimize my love of life
I've seen and done it all
Ready steady stop
Hurry up and wait
The tick-tick-ticking of the clock
Delineates your fate
What I don't see I don't know
What I don't know I don't want
What I don't want I don't need
What I don't need I don't feel
What I don't feel I don't say
What I don't say I don't do
What I don't do I don't like
What I don't like I waste
Ready steady go
Finish up your plate
Before you even realize
It's gonna be too late
I don't know what I see
I don't want what I know
I don't need what I want
I don't feel what I need
I don't say what I feel
I don't do what I say
I don't like what I do
I just like to waste

Bolt Thrower - No Guts, No Glory

All senses
Under attack
Oblivion
Penultimate
Anticipation
Fills your soul
At the limit
Beyond control
The last advance
One final chance
It now shall be... no guts, no glory
Retaliation
Sequencially inclined
No guts, no glory
You decide
The last advance
One final chance
It now shall be... no guts, no glory
Swallow no pride, strength from inside
Still driving on, second to none
The last advance
One final chance
It now shall be... no guts, no glory
The last advance
One final chance
It now shall be... no guts, no glory

But anything heavy will do. But when I wanna get pumped up for a weekend or major battle 6 to 8 hours of Bolt Thrower before a battle always gets me in gear!

C&C Red Alert's 'Hell March' for any Imperial Army.

A damn good choice.

For Necrons I like Immortal by Adema, it just sums them up perfectly.

Die MF die my Dope always makes me think of World Eaters, dunno why......

For some reason 'Show me how to live' by Audioslave makes me think of the Eldar 0_o

Yeah. Hell March is definitely the Guard's, and more specifically the Cadians', theme tune.

For the Adeptus Astartes, Marilyn Manson's "Seizure of Power" is suitable for any time Marines are in close combat, probably best for the BA, but eh.
Mars, Bringer of War works for Marines in general I agree, specially for deepstrike chapters though..

For something a little different, Johnny Cash's "When the Man comes Around" for the Inquisition.
"There's a man going around taking names and he decides who to free and who to blame.."
That says Inq Lord to me ;)

For the Eldar, Tadpole's "Better Days" works for them when they're in CC too.

Well.....

To the theme of the MarineLand ads
"They fly on down in their thunderhawks,
they load their bolters and they're ready to rock.
They'll kill those xenos (lets watch them die!)

You'll see them everywhere they're space marines
They're the Emperors chosen, they kick some butt
And....
EVERYONE LOVES MARINELAND!"

My Tau are fond of Queen.

One man, one goal, one mission,
One heart, one soul, just one solution,
One flash of light, yeah, one god, one vision

One flesh, one bone,
One true religion,
One voice, one hope,
One real decision,
Wowowowo gimme one vision

No wrong, no right,
I'm gonna tell you there's no black and no white,
No blood, no stain,
All we need is one world wide vision

One flesh, one bone,
One true religion,
One voice, one hope,
One real decision,
Wowowowowowo

I had a dream,
When I was young,
A dream of sweet illusion,
A glimpse of hope and unity,
And visions of one sweet union,
But a cold wind blows,
And a dark rain falls,
And in my heart it shows,
Look what they've done to my dream

Vision,
Give me your hands,
Give me your hearts,
I'm ready,
There's only one direction,
One world and one nation,
Yeah one vision

No hate, no fight,
Just excitation,
All through the night,
It's a celebration wowowowo yeah

One one one

One flesh, one bone,
One true religion,
One voice, one hope,
One real decision

Gimme one night,
Gimme one hope,
Just gimme,
One man, one man,
One bar, one night,
One day hey hey,
Just gimme gimme gimme
Fried chicken!

Status Quo - In the army now :p

Both Hell Marches are very good.

And when the Hellhound comes rolling forward: Bloodhound Gang - Fire Water Burn.

I remember last time this subject came up on Portent. Generally, there seem to be a pattern to what music people would like to associate their armies with. Mostly rock, metal and pompous classical music.

Veteran of the Psychic Wars

That makes me think of Space Marine Librarians

You see me now, a veteran
Of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I'm not sure that there's anything left of me

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
It's time we had some leave
We've been living in the flames
We've been eating out our brains
Oh, please don't let these shakes go on

You ask me why I'm weary
Why I can't speak to you
You blame me for my silence
Say it's time I changed and grew
But the war's still going on, dear
And there's no end that I know
And I can't say if we're ever
I can't say if we're ever gonna be free

You see me now a veteran
Of a thousand psychic wars
My energy is spent at last
And my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons
And I'm helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I'm made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory

Don't let these shakes go on
It's time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And been sliding into hell
Oh, please don't let shakes go on
Don't let these shakes go on
Don't let these shakes go on

The melody of the russian anthem... and any other piece of russian Gregorian chant for that matter.

Couple that with my extreme interest in the Battle for Stalingrad and there you go, an Imperial Guard army is born.

I may be going back a ways but I have always enjoyed the following:

Metallica: Disposable Heroes

Monstrosity: Eternal War

Grip, Inc.: Heretic War Chant

Slayer: War Ensemble, Reign in Blood, Angel of Death

Bolt Thrower: Most anything

Disturbed: Down with the Sickness-reminds of Nurgle armies every time I hear it.

Not the most original list but definately appropriate songs.

Thanks,
Tom

Digimortal by Fear Factory. not for its lyrics but for its sound. chugging and hard beats, sounds very orky so does Burton C. Bell's voice.

EDIT:
anything by Fear Factory is Orky (its not because of the lyrics, but the music)

People underestimate their useful units (wraiths, paraiahs, scarabs) and WBB. not as fast as the song but, ya know, to the point.

It's not that we are all metalheads, its just that we play a wargame set in a gothic-styled universe. :D Seriously, if it was upbeat, the music wouldn't match the feel of the games. Still, there is an awful lot of metal being named here.

Back on Portent I recall participating in a thread (one of several in fact) which suggested "All about the Pentiums" by Wierd Al, for Necrons. Notably that was before the current Necon codex came out.... :D

Farewell of Slavian by the Russian Red Army Choir is good for IG, dont know what they are saying, but the feel is dead on. It gives me images of a massive army rolling across a field, tanks rolling over trees and obstacles, infantry running alongside the tanks to meet the enemy,(no I'm not a communist spreading the word of the great proletariat revolution) but it also has a bit of a tragic tone, knowing that all these IG are going to die. Obscure yes, but it's worth the search for you IG players

I find no matter what army i am playing i can always psyke myself up with a rousing rendition of Eye of The Tiger by Survivor, the Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy followed up by Simply the Best by Tina Turner; it certainly seems to focus the troops.

Interestingly enough i have also found the same thing works before sitting an exam ;)

Here's my two:

There is some Rammstein song that has a very militaric beat in it, going "Links, links, links rechts links, links einz, links zwei, links drei links" somewhere (the video is an anthill getting attacked).
It sounds rather mindless and robotic

I made up my own song for the Orks.

It is very beautiful and would sound kinda like Ratt's "I Want A Woman" meets Carcass "Hepatic Tissue Fermentation" with a touch of modern electronica.

Cailus' beautiful Ork song.

"We're Orks and we're beautiful
Kinda like Paris Hilton but less plastic-y

We're Orks and we kick butts
Even though our Codex is old and *****.

Ch:
We're Orks
Yeah baby
We're Orks
Rock and Rolling
All night long

*Insert Super Solo from Kerry King*

We got lotsa Grots
And they are weak as ****
We like Boags beers
and chicks with big tits

We fight all day
And rock all night
But baby I love you
Please don't fight.

Ch:
We're Orks
Yeah baby
We're Orks
Rock and Rolling
All night long

Repeat Chorus X 7"

So what do you guys think?
