Hi there. I am looking for examples of the old 1st ed whirlwind, you know where the launcher was a conversion made from a monster base i think.

Basically i will want to mount that launcher onthe current rhino chassis. but god if i can find any pictures of it nowadays.

Anyone got the know how?

From what I recall, you needed a monster base, a 2 sets of doors from the top of the old chasis (or plasticard), plastic card, and the old "bubble" hatches from the rhino kits.
Cut the monster base in half so you have 2 rows of "rockets" on the underside of the base, using the doors and plastic card, make a box housing the "rockets". Use a bubble hatch to give the launcher a decent looking angle upwards and glue the hatch to the underside. Accessorize to taste.
Glue to the top of the rhino. Some used the old-school Razorback cupolas.

I believe that is a 2nd edition whirlwind. Like Marsekay said, there was no whirlwind in first edition, only a conversion How-to in WD.

I know the old school whirly.
Deadite is right about the construction.
It is quite simple so that you should not need any pictures.

Sadly I could only find this pic.

It is not the right thing but it shows the look of the monsterbase launcher.

The real launcher would look somewhat like this, allthough without the missiles.

There's always this conversion... (http://www.warhammer40k.galeon.com/imagenes/whirlcarton.jpg)

or this one (http://www.commandoperationscenter.com/Whirlwind.jpg) (modified version of the description given above...you can actually see what parts were used)

still googling... if I find more I'll edit...

an interesting idea for a whirlwind... About mid page (http://community-2.webtv.net/Tiger40000/ConversionAlley/)

The first ones nearly there though they had little antennaes on the sides if i remember right.

That second one is hideous...

I am sure Puffin magician had a picture of some other tank with the same launcher used somewhere if only i could find it!!!

Here is mine:

It uses a WHF Monster Base, plasticard, and two old 2nd ed Rhino Bumpers

The first one is just a box with decorative plasticard. Many folks made the same thing out of the old boxy HK missiles and just grouped them together (I even tried this myself).

The second one actually used a monster base and plastic card...which is what you were after. ?? (also made one of these, but just used one monster base and cut it in half... the conversion shown used 2 monster bases.)

The third one is an inset monster base.

eh, if I find mine, I'll take a pic of it.

The actual directions were reprinted in the Vehicle Manual Rulebook (1992) page 25-27. Just looking at the rules, forgot how great this thing use to be. Str. 8, D10 wounds, -6 Save Modifier. Ahhhh..... those were the days.

Shoot me a PM Marsekay and I'll make a copy for you you. Oh, instead of a Monster Base, I used some of my son's Leggos:o)

I like the conversion with the launcher in the hull of the rhino, but using the old rhino chassis it does look a little "toy-like" and insubstantial. nice idea though. Overall these conversions are rather inspiring.
