So quite recently I picked up Heavy Gear having played the video games back in middle school in the late 90's after my store started stocking it, picking up a force both of the Northern Guard and Southern Republican Army.

For the Northern Guard I decided to go with a very sort of Tattooine-ey worn/weathered look, with a couple patches of Teal for regimental markings, and to paint theem I picked up the recent Heavy Gear Blitz Reaper Master Series paint set.

Primarily this consisted of a couple of coats of Terranova Tundra over black primer, most of the metal bits done in Durasheet Alloy and the armor scratches/scoring done with Skunkwerks Gunmetal applied with spare foam from a carrying case and then lightly gone over again with Durasheet Alloy for some gradient. Then I pretty much just drowned them in Gryphonne Sepia (or whatever they're calling it now) wash.

Here are the two Northern Guard models I have done so far (warning: my camera sucks and I'm bad at pictures :p)

Very nice painting so far!

Interested to see much more as I have been tempted by the Heavy Gear range for some time.

Cheers,

The models are really, really good for the most part, although mostly metal. It's really impressive seeing a squad of gears standing around roughly the size of marines but with a lot more going on in terms of the model. The Grizzly up there is roughly the size of a Terminator but a lot more complex, they're really cool models.

Hopefully I'll have another Gear done tonight :D

I just picked this game up recently myself, and am loving it! My demo game culminated with a gear knife fight. The models are truly amazing! As an ESE player, I look forward to your Southern gears. Regardless, I'm really digging the gritty look for the Northerners. From a color perspective, I find that the yellow lenses get lost in the largely ochre gears, but those kinds of details are always painter's preference(and come to think of it, could get washed out by photos). Great job, I look forward to more!

Yeah, I'm thinking of changing the lenses to a different color, I'm thinking a neon green perhaps. I'm also not happy with the base on the Grizzly, I need to decide how I'm going to change that.

Thanks for the comments so far :D 2 Hunters to add to everything, these were a bit rushed, got a late stsart then some friends came over and shennanigans ensued making it difficult to concentrate XD

I think the green came out much better for the lenses as well, the yellow just wasn't working XD

Here's some more pics, hopefully I'll get better with them in time :P

I've been busy building a ton of stuff, here's everything so far

CNCS:
1 Mammoth
1 Kodiak
8 Jaguar
6 Hunter
3 Grizzly
2 Cheetah
2 Weasel
1 Sabertooth
3 Tiger

SRA:
1 Naga
1 King Cobra
8 Spitting Cobra
5 Black Mamba
2 Iguana
6 Jaeger

PRDF:
1 Red Bull
2 Crusader IV
1 Crusader V
4 Warrior IV
1 Chieftan IV
1 Warrior IV
2 Skirmisher
2 Gladiator
(1 Warrior Variant still to be built as either Warrior IV or Warrior as I've got Warrior arms and Warrior IV torso...)

I kinda went overboard there methinks....

:p

I'd still like to add a couple of White Cats, another Tiger and Sabertooth, and I'm thinking maybe a couple of Ferrets, possibly another squad of Black Mambas, and maybe some ATM grizzlies and possibly a Cataphract.

Hooray update! finished revised 1000TV GU5 army.

Cheetah's and AGM jag for Strike Squad. Kinda had an issue with these guys where the wash didn't dry right and ended up looking all shiny and syrupy, had to redo some parts, not thrilled with the cheetah's but...oh well.

An update!

So here's a Naga and a Jaeger, I tried doing them in pretty much the same style as my Imperial Guard in terms of method, I think I'll leave off the Sepia wash from now on, but I think they turned out ok, alas the pictures really suck again, but here they are anyway

More stuff!

Got a Black Mamba and a Spitting Cobra done, kept the Sepia just layered it on a bit differently and it came out a bit better I think. Also I touched up the Naga a bit. I think I'll need to tone down the brightness on the MRP for the Cobra, not sure how I'm gonna do that well though, we'll see tomorrow!

Two more Cobras done, one a Spitting and one a Support. Still have 5 more :p (for some reason I liked the idea of a list, perhaps at something like 1500tv, with 8 cobras).

This makes my first Fire Support Squad complete for 1000tv games :D (Ld2 unupgraded Jaeger, 2 Brahmin ATK/DEF 3 Field Armored Spitting Cobras and a similarly kitted Support Cobra)

More terrain. I found that whatever GW did to their washes, they dry out faster, becoming much like very thick syrup or engine grease, and it has an interesting effect when it dries as a result. It doesn't come out spectacularly in these pictures, but when viewed in person it looks like sand buildup/drifts on the buildings.

How do you find the gameplay?

Cheers,

Vaktathi
22-09-2012, 09:45
The gameplay is very interesting, very different from 40k and you never really play the same battle twice. There's sometimes a bit too much emphasis on indirect fire weapons, but the sheer range of unit options and actions and the game mechanics as a whole are very solid for the most part. I've seen games where the mission takes place at night in a sandstorm where very few shots are traded and it's almost entirely a battle of trading electronic bits as each side attempts to prevent the other from getting some sort of lock on them through ECM/ECCM, others will be open savannah shooting matches, with varying "priority" levels for forces determining army composition and mission objectives (e.g. a priority level 1 force made up of almost nothing but crappy weeny conscript units may have to face an elite battle hardened priority level 4 commando force that can blast them from the table in short order, but the PL1 force may only have to scan one thing on the board and avoid annihilation to claim victory while the PL4 force will have to exterminate every model on the other side in order to claim victory).
