Hi all I have some questions about the different armies in fantasy. I've been pling 40k for about 10 years. And me and. A few friends want to start fantasy but no one in the area. Plays. Could I get a rundown of all the armies from as game play aspect I.e. Tactics, compoosition, ranged/magic/melee. GWs website has little in the way of explanation. Cheers.

I can give a quick run-down of the armies I know.

1. Warriors of Chaos
a. Excellent in close combat
b. Excellent choices for magic and one of the few armies that has armored wizards.
c. Almost no ranged capability with the exception of marauder horsemen and the hell cannon. The hell cannon is however a beast.
d. Nice army to learn with because the tactics really amount to nuke em' with magic...march forward and smash. Repeat.
e. Lots of different build options, unfortunately some are very broken and won't win you many friends (i.e. the chosenstar).
f. Very fun to kit bash and model/paint.

Dwarfs:
a. Tons of shooting. Best options for war machines and they can be upgraded.
b. Rock solid infantry with a high leadership.
c. No magic (bummer)...but they have guns! The anvil of doom is nice (but some players consider it cheesy).
d. No cavalry (bummer)...but they have guns!
e. Slooooow movement. But who needs to move...they have guns!
f. Tactics are usually along the lines of castle up and let the enemy break against you like waves off of rocks. Shoot the hell out of everybody.

Ogres:

a. Super tough and fast on the move. In your face and ready to smash very quickly.
b. Units are pricey and you probably won't feel like you have a "filled out" army until you play at least 1750pts.
c. Tactics similar to warriors of chaos, but they get there faster and can maneuver a wee bit better.
d. Low Weapon Skill means you'll swing last most of the time.
e. Cheesy builds are possible, but almost unnecessary.
f. Few models needed to paint and be ready to play. Definitely the army for those who don't want to spend forever painting.

Hope this helps a bit.

Very, very briefly, here's a list of which armies do which best/which armies have which 'style':

Combat:
WoC
Beastmen
Bretonnians
DoC
Lizardmen
OnG
VC
Ogres

Shooting:
Empire
Dwarves
HE
WE
DE
Skaven
TK

Magic:
HE
Skaven
Lizardmen
Empire
DE
WoC

All Rounders:
Empire
Dwarves (except Magic)
DE
OnG
Lizardmen

As i said, very brief, and there is crossover with a lot of armies. My advice is pick the army you like the models and background for.

Tell the forum what you and your friend are looking for in a Army (shooting, close combat, magic, few models, endless sea of Skaven slaves etc.) and its much easier to give detailed information (although I like the rundowns above)

Also what miniatures do you like the look of? Most important pointa as you will (hopefully) paint these things as well!

I think you forgot Robot Horses. :shifty:

And Death Lasers. Whose number is steadily increasing.

Maybe keep 40K in the first place? :p

Out of curiosity, Darth Killa, what is your preferred 40K army?

Would you like to maintain their look and/or fighting style?

If not, what 40K army style would you prefer?

Have you taken a look at the model ranges, if so, who is your favorite? If not, which have you looked at?

What is your painting tolerance, few and detailed, or do hordes of simple schemes not phase you?

Thanks for all info guys. As for some of the questions. I play tau and death guard(what's left of them with the current codec) for my tau a favor high mobility and take a good deal of suits. My death guard I tend to take lots of troops and lots of meltas and flamers giving them great short range abilities. the group I'm in has one guy settled on vamp counts, one on tome kings, another is looking at either high elves or beastmen, and I'm leaning toward lizardmen or skaven. now for the questionnaire.
1aggressive
2. Fast
3. skilled (I do enjoy a variety of tactics AMD types though)
4. Mage
5. Elves
6. Giant hammer
7. Chainmail
8. Mountains(gurkas anyone)
9. accepted
10. I don't drink pop, it's nearly as bad for you as cigarettes.

Thanks again for all the help guys. Also sorry for all the spelling I'm on my phone and they didn't put warhammer terms in my autocorrect:wtf:

Or maybe OnG. Wierdly.

I'm not entirely sure what about O&G is particularly fast, skilled or Elf...

It can be pretty fast, with 4 types of cavalry, 3 types of chariots, Trolls, Arok, Wyverns plus random movement Squig Units. And you can do 'elite' armies with Big Un's, BO and SO. Plus it's very aggressive, often from mountain regions, as subtle as a big hammer and relatively flexible troop choice wise. Definately not Elves though, you're right there.

Yeah, it seem's as though you're a High Elf player. Why not get the starter set Island of Blood? You get some amazing High Elf miniatures in that boxed set.

Dark elves would fit as well. What minis do you like the look of most?

Yeah, elves. High Elves, though, because Dark Elves drink Coca and smoke a pack of Lucky per day.

Cool questionnaire.
