View Full Version : Starting with Space marines

07-05-2006, 14:56
Hello all,

I'm starting with a nice new Marine army. Havent got a name yet or a symbol or anything, just know they are going to be green :D

First I bought me a whole lot.....

Time to start painting.....

lol good luck dude, very brave of you to go all out like that

07-05-2006, 15:24
always nice to see another marine project

do you have a time scale?

07-05-2006, 15:30
2 dreads? Awesome! My tip is to give them both missile launchers when you build them as they suck in combat.

Greeeeeeen eh? Well if you wanted a codex chapter you could go for salamanders. I have seen some real nice old-skool schemes around, flames and all that look terrific.

What shade of green are you wanting? Because snot green is a very underated colour. Not as emo as dark angels but not as vibrant as those ultramarine rejects....medusa somethings... (with the black halos :D)

Well, looking at his avatar I'd guess he's going for Scorpion Green, as that's the usuall colour for the Sons of Medusa.

If so, it's good to see I'm not the only one starting that army;)

Best of luck, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread:)

I'm just popping in to subscribe to this thread, something tells me there'll be rather a lot of work over the next few weeks and months.

- Likewise. I can't wait to see more than just the boxes, lol!

Be sure to check the thread in my signature. We need more good men like you there!

As an aside to the colours, I was recently thinking of a striking green&bone colour scheme recently.

Here's a quick example of what I mean.

08-05-2006, 00:44
If you havent desided yet, I would say Sons of Medusa, Scorpion Green bodies, white heads. chapter icon is a white skull (no bottom jaw) wit a ring with 4 points on it . A buddy of mine did them some years back, rather striking and i liked them alot. I dont know about them fluff wise how ever. Best of luck to ya.

08-05-2006, 00:59
I would say. use the second scheme tulkas came up with. It looks really cool. I cant wait to see where all that money goes!

09-05-2006, 21:11
looks good. witht hat amount of minis all at one go, i advise you to do this: ddo each one, one at a time. ignore all others while your doing one, or it just gets to much and you never get them painted.

like the color scheme, marko

09-05-2006, 22:45
Hey there, good luck with all that modelling!!!

Paint job wise, I saw a pic of some new realeases at games day around here someplace and in one of the pics was a marine squad painted white and light green, don't think they were Sons of Medusa marines, but the scheme was cool!! Have a look around and see if you can dig it up I forgot were it was!! Sorry

Hello all,

Thx for all the respons, thats just what I need to motivate myself.
I painted a few figures. I'm not a great painter but it looks ok.

The color, I just started painted and after a few test models, tryed to paint white but it made me agressif painting 10 layers before a nice smooth white came out, so I quikly got rid of that idea, I came up with this...

Still no name for the Marines, just like no logo....
Thought about Salamanders, Snakes and Dragons, but I just don't find a fitting PAINTABLE logo for on the pads.

So any comments are welcome !!!

Here also a pic of my WIP scouts.
I HATE these models, the arms don't fit....

The bases on the marines are beeing redone, I want to fit in the Medusa Campaign so I'm gonna make urban streetbases.

Any C+C is welcome !!!!

They look alright, but I recommend painting the casings of the wepons a differentcolour, and making the metal more silvery.

13-05-2006, 18:49
Oh almost forgot......
Questions !!!

@spiky James

do you have a time scale?

No I don't, I paint when I have time and when my girl lets me :D
p.s. really, really love you're army, respect for painting the white...

2 dreads? Awesome! My tip is to give them both missile launchers when you build them as they suck in combat.

They will get Missile launchers and Assaultcannons.

What shade of green are you wanting

They are Vallejo's Snot Green with Vallejo's Black Green Wash and GW's Camo Green Highlight.

Thx for the pictures, kinda stole you're green/brown idea....

Still searching for marking for veterans and sergeants??
Red Helmets for sergeants, and veterans red with golden marking?

13-05-2006, 18:51

Working on it, looked kinda dull all goldie....

13-05-2006, 20:53
Have you thought about giving the left hand of the sergants/Vets/HQ the same brozne colouring to anchor the colour alittle more. Also I find that scout look great with some sorta colour contrast. For example the cloth on the carapace armour looks good either black or white, same with the bolter gun-strap. The gun casing looks fine but he scyle magines and other "metal" parts looks good in boltgun metal.
Adding a company colouring adds somemore to the contrastin colours more and balences it out as well

13-05-2006, 21:54
They do look great, even though you don't like it I think highlighting up the knee pads and things to an even lighter shade would look better.

Still, very nice and they look very well painted.

14-05-2006, 13:12
Awesome job on the painting. The green looks great!!

14-05-2006, 14:13
They look pretty good...now if we could see more people done.
The picture quality seems a little fuzzy for some reason.

14-05-2006, 15:52

Tryed to get some better pics....

15-05-2006, 16:21
Tip on the wqhite: Bleached Bone looks better IMO. For doing a good Bleached Bone, go with a solid layer of Bubonic Brown before you do the Bone. But keep in mind that, if the Bubonic Brown isn't 100% solid (some bits just a little more watery than the rest) it might give you a nice effect when doing the Bleached Bone.

16-05-2006, 08:45
Tip on the wqhite

You have to help me out !!!
What white??? You mean the snow or the brown an the knees and pads?

16-05-2006, 17:18
Ok I tryed to put up some better pictures of the marines on page 2.
I also made some changes regarding the bolters, they are no just gold...

The new bases are also done.

Here is also a pic of my WIP Razorback

Thx for replying everyone, keep the C+C coming :D

17-05-2006, 11:24
In your post on page two you mentioned painting a nice white. I was under the impression that you mistook the Bleached Bone I used in the image for the arms etc. for Skull White. Also, if you want to paint Skull White on something, first do a Codex Grey coat followed by Space Wolf Grey.

Am I mistaken or have you painted Bleached Bone on the kneepads since your last picture update?

17-05-2006, 11:33
Oh now its clear Tulkan.....
I tryed the codex grey and layers of thin down white but I just think its not my thingie...

The kneepads are bleached bone from the beginning, just made a better highlight.
Did al new highlights that are more visible and painted the guns red.
O and I gave them some urban bases, with white snow instead of brownish/yellow one (didnt mix white paint in the snow mixture)

Hi all,

A small update...

My scouts are finished
A Shot of my Razorback (still WIP), kinda have the feeling I over did it with the weathering....
And my all plastic Commander (WIP). I really really like the double Power Fist look.

C+C is welcome !!!

Awesome figures, I must say.

The green is fabulous, but I'd definitely spend the time to tidy up the Bolters a little bit. There's a couple of little slips, and I think some of the gold's a little flat tbh (especially on the winged skulls on the Bolters). It'll make a difference, believe me.

Love the Commander so far; I can tell you've spent some time labouring over him and it really gives your painting skills a chance to shine.

Btw, how did you do your bases? It might have been mentioned somewhere but I obviously missed it.

24-05-2006, 21:08
Looking good. Although for some reason the rhino's bolts (Though cool) make me think nurgle. Maybe just a little less brown.

24-05-2006, 22:29
a running commander that is pointing with a power fist and the other fist is static next to his body... I think I want to see that in one piece... any chance of a picture where he is fit on his legs?

I love the double power fist idea... been thinking of making one myself lately (even before I saw your pics ;) )

25-05-2006, 01:07
Ok, with my whites I go one of two routes.
For small areas: Snakebite Leather, Bronzed Flesh, Bleached Bone, Skull White.
For large areas: Ultramarine Blue, Enchanted Blue, Ice Blue, Skull White.
Why the blues? Because the way the eye works means that white with a hint of blue look whiter than whites without. This is why you find a smidge of blue dye in washing powders!

25-05-2006, 10:45
Thx for the reply's !!!

I will work on the bolters of the scouts, kinda looks better in real then on the pictures but I will change them.

No I have a question about devastators.
I have a large Marine bitzbox and I was thinking to make some devastators with either the Missile launchers from the Vehicle sprue or maybe Lascannons that I have left from the razorbacks. Want to make them static, not like a normal marine in a normal marine squad with the launcher on his arm but maybe put them on larger bases (is this legal?) and make some stand alone weapons beside them. That would really make them stand out as Devastators.

Anyone has experience or ideas?

If it is a really stupid idea you all can tell me to....

25-05-2006, 11:24
Something like this (very quick made), dont pay attention to the marine and base and all please.

25-05-2006, 12:59
That might work... not too sure though, would you add a marine like he is shooting the lascannon, or just standing around like in the picture?

EDIT: models may always be based on larger bases than the ones they come with...

25-05-2006, 15:11
I would put a marine beside it who looks like he is shooting/handeling the lascannon. The one in the picture is just as reference....

25-05-2006, 16:28
*wondering how you would do that*

I don't really like the idea, but I might have a wrong image of it in my mind... if you make it look good, all the better for you and I would stand corrected ;)

I might have crafted a seat using some of the Space Marine Biker parts, and the Space Marine holding two handles to manoeuvere the turret, so it looks like a proper stationary weapon platform. But, I don't know if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

I'd like to ask again though, how did you do your Space Marine bases, they're really good!

26-05-2006, 06:43
I'd like to ask again though, how did you do your Space Marine bases, they're really good!

Its very easy. Just some green stuff on the base, make a street form on it and paint it black with grey drybrush, few washes with brown and green, glue on some parts of a old terrain piece (Urban War), do the rusty stipple thing and viola.

Think I'ts not gonna work with the devastators. It looks to big when finished :cries:

- I like the idea of having a targetting link through the visor and such. Hook some wires from the Space Marines helmet to the Lascannon, IMO, and it would work wonders! Kinda like a servo skull, but a floating lascannon! Oooh, I'm gonna go make a random thing like that when I get a chance, lol!

Hello all,
Its been a while...

I Finished my scouts and marine squad. I started to put together my assault unit and second marine squad (which I also started painting).
Still working on the logo...

Here some small updates.
Both WIP and I'm still working on better pictures......

26-06-2006, 18:35
They look great for tabletop standart, keep up the good work. My only criticism is that they all seem to be lacking something- dark contrast. Maybe you should have used black or dark brown as the secondary colour?
