View Full Version : Interesting GW.

Well, this is interesting.

Received an email today from our GW contact stating we are not to discuss ANY (emphasis theirs) upcoming GW releases prior to Sept 24th.

Now, It may come as no surprise GD is the weekend prior. But what surprises me is the information I get, rarely comes through official channels. Glimpses, discussions, off the records, hints, yes, but we are not working with marketing or production, so I was able to stay out of the NDA this time around...at least until now.

Now I'm curious what they think we know they want us to keep mum on....

Curious.

Well it's not real news or rumors so not sure it's of any significance to anyone,

Cheers.

Well, the next few months sound to ALL be Chaos, so I s'pose it could be counted as a single mega-release that they'd want to keep quiet about.

Chaos Release with a stealth DA release. Mark it!

It's probably to ensure they have something exciting for GD for us jaded veterans.

Could it have anything to do with a Hobbit release? I'm not sure what makes the most marketing sense, but according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hobbit_(film_series)#Marketing) the toys would be released in October to drum up support for the movie. I think that kind of big money Hush-Hush would be the only thing to make such a drastic change.

I'm pretty sure the latest annual report said Hobbit for December.

The answer must be:

DA is the official 3rd Codex of Chaos and being released with the Traitor Legions! (As well as being another Loyalist codex.)

Is that the same email that stressed in no uncertain terms not to sell or display the 40K starter set prior to midnight or have all your new releases delayed for 30 days for the next 6 months?

Hopefully there will be a surprise big release. That would be nice.

Someone mentioned a GW blackshirt saying that something special is happening in September, but apparently he was tight lipped on any details.

I've been speculating about a possible double codex release as a follow-up to Dark Vengeance, but I base that only on the inside back cover of White Dwarf.

September 24th should be the day we hear about advance orders for October, correct?

I was not aware that GW and the Illuminati where in cahoots. :) This actually gets me excited to see what happens

Starchild

@Rated_lexxx: It's not the Illuminati, it's the Freemasons. That's even admitted in the Rogue Trader book!

I think not.

Could just be an effort to make Games Day less of a damp squib than it was widely reported to be last year. People expect the annual Games Workshop Convention to be a bit of a reveal-fest and when everyone knows what it's revealing ahead of time, it can take the wind out of your sails a little.
I can sympathise but soon as the company realises that a good number of us have a budget and don't like to be ambushed with a week's worth of forewarning to muster up the cash to buy something (let alone the additional 48 hour deadline attatched to DV), the better.

@Chem-Dog: It's been a long time since GW actually previewed anything non-FW at Gamesday, and the event has deteriorated ever since. :(

Maybe this is the first sign of GW trying to revamp Games Day to rekindle interest, like they are currently attempting with White Dwarf?

Thanks Stickmonkey, always a pleasure to read what you have to impart!

I vaguely recall an interview (or press release?) from a GW head saying that this year would see an "unexpected surprise" but I figured that was, you know, unexpected to anyone who ignores rumor sites and forums. Maybe there's something in the pipeline that really IS a surprise.

As much as I don't like the rumor blackout... I'd actually applaud GW if they managed to sneak up some big release, completely and utterly and totally without a single rumor. It would be quite a feat. :D

Whoa whoa whoa, save some fire for Ragnarok, Surtr! you're telling me a black shirt said 'something big was happening' and didn't clarify? They do that every other month to try ad build anticipation for everything from thicker glue to "increasing" the chocolate ration from 50 grams to 35 grams. I frankly don't put too much stock in their words. Not to say I don't think big things are coming....

My Black Shirt told me to keep an eye out for the upcoming WD issues. I read that as more mini-codex updates like the demon dex. Tau perhaps?

Starchild
29-08-2012, 23:38
That was the other possibility I was speculating on: a Dark Angels mini update to tide over the die hard players until the new codex early next year. I suppose other races could benefit from that too but I think GW wants to keep us focused on DA vs. Chaos for a while.

Less blackshirt more drunk Jervis john's son at the college of artisans.

And it wasn't tight lipped more don't bother wait six weeks or so when talking about a codex purchase for cross dressing heretics in green.

Came third hand like so I treated it to a healthy dose of salt.

Well the back page of September's WD has a full page picture of a Dark Angel with "The Battle Rages On!" at the bottom, so I wouldn't be surprised by some DA goodies. Although it may just be another month of Dark Vengeance waffle - pages 0-12 and 18-80 in this months WD were solid Space Marines, and I wouldn't put is past them to ramp up the love-fest even more.

Starchild
31-08-2012, 01:12
@Lord Zarkov: I was actually shocked to read the Space Marine "Buy More!!!!!" article.

I thought the Dark Vengeance coverage was enough, but why another damn article on SMs? Especially when they have two other game systems that have been neglected? :wtf:

No wonder Space Marines sell so well. If they want to push more 40k, why don't they throw the xenos players an Emporerdamned bone once in a while?

Ok, rant over...

I too hope this vaguest of vague rumours isn't Hobbit related.

blackcherry
31-08-2012, 01:27
I hope it is hobbit related. LotR is a pretty good games system (you know its a good system when designers for GW historical skirmish games borrow it ;)) and it could do with some more attention. Whatever the news is, its unlikely to be surprising to folks who have been scouring the net for rumours these past few months.

@Chem-Dog: It's been a long time since GW actually previewed anything non-FW at Gamesday, and the event has deteriorated ever since. :(

Well, aren't we seeing the cloud behind the silver lining?! :p But you've kinda made my point for me. If I were an international miniature company looking to turn it's home-ground convention's reputation as a big old waste of time around, I would be trying like hell to ensure as many of my lovely big firm secrets I wanted to reveal were kept secret until I was ready to, you know, reveal 'em (like a stripper).

Are you ninja confirming Dreadfleet's return? XD

No, but I suspect one of these "surprises" we're getting told about will be another 70 quid game-in-a-box deals. You know " Hey SUPRISE! the thing we did the last two years running is happening again!"
Based on nothing but idle fantasy I'd say it's a re-imagining of Dark Future with lots of cool weeny ikkle cars shooting each other.

While in the realm of my utter delusion, GW have managed to negotiate a better deal with NLC than they did last time and this means promotional offers are back on the table, BOGOF deals coming to a FLGS near you!
And GW have decided to reboot and support all of their languishing specialist games with new editions of Epic, Necromunda & Gorkamorka*, Inquisitor and Mordheim set to hit over the next two years.

*and possibly even live up to their promise of a further expanded range of games along the same premise.

You mean like the massive reveal of the Dark Eldar in 2010? That was pretty big and exciting if you ask me.

I believe Jes Goodwyn was particularly peeved that lots of the stuff got leaked prior to GD. Which, as I said before, is understandable.

Starchild
31-08-2012, 23:44
@Chem-Dog: Wait, what? Regarding specialist games, was that speculation or intel? I just spotted a silver lining on that cloud but I'm afraid to chase it for fear of being struck by lightning! :p

@Ultraloth: The Dark Eldar unveil was awesome, I'll give you that, but that was after several horrid Games Day years.

The rumour lockdown is just going to kill any excitement for this year's Games Day, other than Dark Vengeance games tables which I'm sure will feature some neat Bane's Landing scenery... oh and Forgeworld's previews of course.

I'm hoping for a new edition out of left field of Epic with full support and a huge range.

Likely this is just 40k stuff and then Hobbit Stuff. ie. The stuff we're already aware of.

The proper return of Epic would make me absolutely unspeakably delighted. Don't say things like that...

IF they did Epic, it would probably be something initially cool, but long-term lame, like Dreadfleet. Oh, wait, didn't they do that with the Horus Heresy game?
