Finally getting round to starting/finishing one of my many many projects and thought I'd start a bit of a log to keep me working.

My son and I play Uncharted Seas as well as some mates and I play Dystopian Wars and wanted to create a portable gaming surface that was a bit more than a blue piece of cloth. So I decided to make a "Ye Olde Pirate Map" style gaming surface made from tea and coffee stained Calico Fabric and painted with inks. The actual playing surface is 6 foot x 4 foot

I'll try and post up progress pics as I go along and if you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them all.

Mad idea. Will you have 3d islands to place about? I am not sure if that would mesh. I suppose you could always do 2d islands in the same way as the map just as separate pieces of cloth to throw down.

I think 3D islands in full colour would be a brilliant contrast, failing that make them the same Sepia colour but make them 3D.

Yeah, sometimes contrast is good, but at other times it is discordant. I am not sure which would be the case here.

That's a brilliant idea! I wish there was someplace you could buy a map like that...

I'm planing on making 3d scenery and painting it all in the sepia tones. I think it'll look great that way but we'll have to see

Not going to be able to do an update on painting tonight as I have a Warmachine battle :o)

Got some of the line work done tonight but decided to stop as I want to add a bunch more detail work with the brush and don't want to over kill the lines

Sorry for the lack of posts, AD work got in the way of fun time, but anyways heres a quick one of the first sea monsters on the map. They're still a bit dark as the ink hadn't quite dried at time of photo

Really nice work. Looks great. It's a very different take on the playing area. The island looks great also. What did you use to create the island foundation? It looks like slate.

Again, great work!

Cheers Arli yes they are made with slate. I did them with my boys so still have some work to get them all finished

Got a game in the other day so thought I'd show the map off with ships on it. Also the round reef is a new piece of scenery, I'll try and get some pics up of that

I don't play any of these games but I do need to say that the concept and follow-through is fantastic! Love the feel!
