View Full Version : The Sons of Horus

10/28/12 OP updated with newer Sons of Horus images...the idea of these new Sons of Horus is Isstvan 3 traitors, very Cthonian with topknots, and glyphs. I figure the sea green gradually became significantly subdued into a murky sea green not long before Isstvan 3 when the Cthonian influences on the legion came to overpower the Terrans.

This is an amazing model!! I would say that it is a grey green type colour. However, if you wanted it to look more green, use red for trim. Correct me if I am wrong, but if you painted the trim with red it would be contrasting (since it is on the opposite side of the colour wheel) to green therefore bringing out more of a green colour when looking at the model as a whole.

Hope this Helps!!

He looks good.

A very difficult colour scheme to pull off especially as there arnt to many reference pictures.

A great start so far.

Thanks, I would use red for the trim but I am trying to keep as close to the concept art in the Collected Visions book which means mostly black trims. I could try painting the big eye on the shoulder with a red background and gold trim instead though.

My green is painted exactly the same as DPA's Horus Heresy thread tutorial, so adeptus grey undercoat, vallejo USMC tank crew and astronomican grey 50/50. With increasing amounts of astronomican grey for highlights. Its kind of odd how my marine ended up looking a different shade than DPA's though. Im not going to settle on a scheme right now, for all I know the new FW book will shed some light on the Sons of Horus colors, variants and maybe even a guide. I will try to retake pictures of this model too. Right now my images use mainly one light source, I think if I included 2 more lights from the sides it would bring out more detail.

Nice model !

This could work, I would be tempted to use the lightest one as a basecoat and add some white for highlights. The Sons of Horus scheme is probably the most difficult of all the legions, its so hard to get it to look just like the art.

Looks good mate, I think the green is a bit grey, but mine are alot more turquoise then yours. The battle damage is nicely understated too, and i really like that helmet conversion.

A warning about those Foundry paints there... they don't quite match the colour they give as example. I bought some for my SoH and found they didn't really match the pictures. I'll get a photo up of the actual paints. The lightest one isnt quite as green... its a bit creamier. The tone of each paint seems a bit lighter than it's example picture.

Apparently this is going to be the new official Forgeworld scheme for the Sons of Horus. Im not sure what the black armored marine is supposed to be, perhaps 1st company? I thought only Abaddons terminators wore black but this is going to change it seems. The green however looks like it could be attained by mixing dark angels green and some silver metallics perhaps.

I've found Skarsnik Green in the new range of citadel paints to be a pretty close analogy to the reference, maybe a shade or two lighter but certainly acceptable.

Alright folks, no real update so far. Sadly the Mk 2 armor and phobos bolters I ordered still have not yet arrived which is really irritating. Since Forgeworld has resculpted all of the Mk 2,3 and 4 sets I am going to paint the incoming Marines as Luna Wolves during the Great Crusade instead of Sons of Horus. I dont want to end up using the old Mk 2 with the newer Mk 2 because of the big difference in the legs and the new sets look more realistic and true scale inspired. So I will be doing 5 Luna Wolves for the hell of it, and anything past that will be Sons of Horus with maybe some Death Guard, the World Eaters and Emperors Children don't interest me at all really.

So, for the Luna wolves I have a choice of painting the Mk 2 helmet all white, keeping the rim or brow 'crown' a metal color, or doing the crown and mask a metal color, thoughts? Im leaning towards doing the crown and mask a gun metal color, to give the suit a more primitive look.

As for the Justaerins and Horus' armor, I have a choice of doing just black, with grey edge highlighting. Or, doing a metallic black basecoat (boltgun metal+alot of black), and doing metallic highlights and gradually washing the dark metallic color with black paints to tie in the layers. I have experimented a bit with both, im leaning towards a more metal looking black, which looks more like the artwork and less cartoony than chaos black with just grey highlights.

I cant wait to see what FW does with Horus and Mortarion.....Angron was cool, but not really a very interesting character to me anyways.

I wouldn't be so worried about the little differences on the 5 guys. Eventhough they resculpted some parts, the general feel will still be pretty much the same. Just try to mix them up with some of the resulpted sets and no one will see it. Besides, during the crusades and especially the heresy, so much stuff was damaged and repaired that there were bound to be some differences in the amour, even within the same armour type.

In the newset White Dwarf, there is a quick recipe for this color scheme. The picture showed a model that was part of Forge World Sons of Horus units from Games Day, so You can see it on some of the photos from the event. Its very simple, basically tabletop quality, but the marine on the attached photo looked good enough, I think.

Basecoat: Macharius Standard Grey

Drybrush: Necron Compound

Wash: Waywatcher Green

Just to pipe in again, according to the new book the fellow in black is, indeed, a member of the Catulan Reaver company (looks like its not just a squad anymore, but an entire company). Wear black and have a 'Serpent Lodge' symbol instead of the legion icon on their shoulderpad.

I could do that, but im not actually working on an army to game with in the first place. Im basically just painting what I want to paint, and I have a strong desire to try and do the Luna Wolves scheme justice now that I have done some practicing on white armor.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120915061336/warhammer40k/images/4/4f/Luna_Wolves_Mk_III.jpg

I would follow this look, but you can see what I mean about the face armor and picking which parts should be metal. I dont exactly understand what is being displayed on his right knee pad, looks like a face, half black with a star and a jester hat on. I think that looks fun to try and freehand...which means time to buy some new brushes. The Luna Wolves will just be a small side thing I do while I wait for the rest of the good stuff like Abaddon, the Justaerins to go up on the FW website. Im bothered that FW trickles the releases, which makes it hard to get free shipping without waiting until its all out. They really need to set up a production facility in the US too.

Here is my white test, for the Luna Wolves. Only the highlights will be white, to give it the illusion of being white. I used watery vermin brown on the lower parts to give it a dirtied look.

How did you paint the Lunar Wolve White?

The white is:

-basecoat of adeptus battlegrey
-50/50 mix of adeptus battlegrey and astronomican grey (leave the recesses dark)
-pure astonomican grey
-60/50 mix of skull white and astronomican grey coat
-highlights in skull white
-vermin brown blended up the lower leg.

Its pretty easy, you just want the paints to be just right, not to thick or too watered down.

Back with slight progress, my marines have showed up and the bolters should arrive this week.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/IMG_1645.jpg

In the meantime, ive been working on a Death Guard color scheme. Im not sure whether to go off white or just bare grey...the white is cool in theory but I cant seem to get it to look right, so I experimented with a grey scheme inspired by this art:

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120220152746/warhammer40k/images/8/83/Commander_Ignatius_Grolgor.jpg

And the result was:

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/IMG_1657.jpg

I kind of like it, however its not accurate to the fluff Forgeworld has set in stone.

I have also been meddling with the thought of doing my Sons of Horus as a late heresy era warband looking like this:

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/SoH5.jpg

The one thing I hate about the Horus Heresy era is everything is too awesome, and it hurts my head. I have thought about doing almost all of the legions at some point.

Tiny update, I did a small freehand on a Luna Wolves shoulderpad.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/IMG_1659.jpg

I originally tried to paint Legio XVI on the plaque or whatever...didnt fit, painted over it and then I tried Terra, didnt work out...so then I begun to get frustrated and just put XVI. I need alot more practice painting letters. But I am fairly happy with the overall result...wolfy enough? Anyhow I have begun assembling the Luna Wolves, so far it looks like im going to base them to look like they are on a red sand/Mars planet. I think this would look good in contrast with the white, and allow me to slightly weather the lower legs.

Plus a Sons of Horus shoulderpad experiment. Note the darker green tone I used as well...this is knarloc green+fenris grey, + astronomican grey for highlights.

These are looking fantastic! The best Sons of Horus I've seen. I love the gritty, weathered style on that last one. What's the recipe?

Knarloc green+Fenris Grey 60/40 mix as a base.
Nuln oil/Agrax Earthshade 50/50 painted carefully into the recesses
add some Astronomican Grey to the original mix for a lighter highlight
selectively highlight certain edges with pure Astronomican grey and paint the bolts/rivets with chainmail
glaze with thinned nuln oil.

The result should look a little less grey than it does in the pics.

Im currently finishing up some work on the last Sons of Horus tactical marine. Sadly, that means im pretty much out of models to paint at the moment. Im working on a very very tight budget. Im thinking about, ( dont get your hopes up too high) doing a relic Contemptor Dreadnought with Heavy Bolter and a Claw and painting him to look exactly like this..with some of my own necessary modifications and I think the green color im using would work quite well.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/SoH_Contemptor_Ghrastak.jpg

That, or I might also just wait for Abaddon and Loken duel to be released...which I know is going to be an awesome little duel and might cost around the same as a Contemptor anyways.

edit: And if anyone has the Betrayal book, is there any significance to the skulls, and what looks to be bloody hands and certain traitor markings?... on the first page of the Sons of Horus troop images, with the gold masked guy with the crest.

SacredBoltgun
30-10-2012, 09:27
The skulls are just a symbol for the barbarisation of the legion because of the recruts from cthonia. While the disciplined astartes from terra becomming fever and fever, the brutal barbaric sons of cthonia bring new traditions and rituals in the legion. Like all the cthonian runes on the armour.

And let me know what you guys think about the bases, is having a dark model on a darker base a good idea? Im thinking having a grey base might be a bit bland, hmmm. Full black Armour is ether Catulan Reaver Assault Squads or Justaerin Terminators.

I think the black sections on the armour have something to do with this:

The white of the Luna Wolves turned sea-green, then darkened further to a murky verdigris green-black as the Sons of Horus further cast off the disciplined Terran traditions of warfare and erred in pride and growling malice towards the dark heart of Cthonia....

maybe a mark of honour

Here is my kind of sloppy test scheme for Emperor's Children:

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/IMG_1756.jpg

The white inlay on the back of his ankle would be one of the things I do on Mk2 helmets (visor) and armor mostly.

http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q194/InsaneDwarf/IMG_1755.jpg

You can see the little swirls, and ornate flowery or whatever they are supposed to be things. Which I would carefully place on certain areas. I think I need to make those more gold and a tad darker.

I went for non metallic as well because I prefer highlighting and weathering is easier to do on non metallics.

http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/9/9a/EC_Rhino_Deimos.jpg

You can see on this Rhino all these little ornate swirls and engravings which I would try and paint on the armor. And the gold on the armor is something I havent figured out yet, I want to get a gold like you can see on the rhino...which is less of a shining gold to me and more...bronze or brass? I dont know.

I admit its not the greatest transition of art to model, I think the Phoenician helmet in Betrayal looks more elegant, this one has its tubes on the side of the head a bit oversized, the eyes are slanted oddly..it still looks decent but I think they could have sculpted it better.

Last Emperor's children makes me think of Ahhnold in the old Conan-movie. And it looks good, like all your stuff, basically :D

Hi! Great pre-heresy stuff! Love the variety of models you've got in your collection. As for the dull gold on the rhino, I really like Sycorax Bronze or Runelord Brass, one of those might be what you're looking for. Best of luck!

Thanks guys, I am not sure I like how the skins on the EC turned out. He looks okay in person but he looks a bit funky in these images. That head was from one of the Space Wolf plastics too. The paint looks a bit thick and textured oddly. The hair was easy though.

I ordered over 20 bases from Dragonforge so from now on any models I do that are serious will be based more interestingly with rubble/concrete and such. I am trying to get all of the little things I need to make any army I do (probably 500-1000 points at most) look as good as can be. So for at least a few weeks I wont be doing any more models until I can save up enough money to get some more Forgeworld goodies. I personally dont play Warhammer, as I dont know anyone in my area who has a passion for it, but I would like to have it where what I paint can actually be of use if I ever decide to drive 40 minutes to the nearest store. I will take final images of the Sons of Horus models with the new ForgeWorld transfers placed on their armor, just to show off the insignias. Sadly they only shipped my Tigrus bolters and transfers out yesterday so it could be weeks before I get to finish the SoH.

I'm actually rather surprised I dont see many people using Tigrus bolters, usually its always Umbra or Phobos...I think the Tigrus looks sleek and awesome, and has a perfect casing that would look good if painted the same color as the Marines armor.

Hey, i love the Tigris Pattern. I have over 80 of them lying at home. My EC´s will be mostly equipped with it. Don´t understand why it is so seldom used. It is for me the true "assault rifle" under the Boltguns

p.s: Hey Gorthaur, just wanna say how much i apprecheate all your comments, critics and stuff like that in my log. You are a great help!

Ooh, that's interesting. A metallic blue could be a very neat contrast to the opaque white. Might have to remember that one in case I decide to do a small WE detachment for my Word Bearers.

15-11-2012, 01:56
Thanks guys, the blue is simply mordian blue mixed with chainmail. Add astronomican grey for highlights, then wash with nuln oil and asurmen blue until you get the shade you want. I wont be doing World Eaters but I think this blue would look awesome, I tried to get it close to the Betrayal art.

Amazing work dude, this exactly the look i'm going for my own Sons too. Very dark and brooding, the dark heart of Cthonia indeed! I will second the use of microset and microsol, they made my life much easier. You just need to be patient with microsol and let it dry completely before applying another layer of it or to judge the final results. Can't wait to see more SoH.

Cheers! :)

Thanks folks, ill see about doing a more vibrant red on the lenses though they arent as dark in person compared to the pics.

The spiked shoulder is done by simply super glueing on cut off bits from the Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Knights weapons that I had lying around.

Yea, on the subject of transfers its imperative you give the surface a coat of gloss varnish - this creates a nice flat surface to apply the decal to (since acrylic paints will leave a slightly rough texture that traps air). Then, some cheap methods of setting it include white spirit vinegar. This helps 'melt' the transfer slightly, allowing it to bond with the surface better. A quicker alternative that I've found works wonders is medical/rubbing alcohol. It's dries much quicker. At first it looks horrifying, as the reaction causes the transfer to bubble up, but this quickly disappears as the alcohol evaporates, leaving it bonded nicely. Once done, give a coat of Matt varnish to seal and dull the shine from the previous coat of gloss and the decal carrier film and job's a good 'un.

By the by, I've also heard that microsol is basically just spirit vinegar as well. Certainly, I've found vinegar to work just fine and its far cheaper. I just find alcohol works faster ;)

Here are the Dragonforge bases which I am very happy with, the fine detail on the rubble and dirt is very well done and had almost no flash or anything on them. Unfortunately it looks like I will be taking quite a break from Warhammer for a time as all of my focus is transferring to The Hobbit. Which is cheaper + more bang for my buck and besides the LOTR SBG is what got me into model painting in the first place. So expect a Hobbit blog from me in the Fantasy section sometime hopefully before January as I will probably get the starter for christmas.

Apart from the transfers your sons of horus are amongst the best I've seen! Very impressive!

I have used one method for applying transfers in a really good way for about 8 years now. It always comes up really nice! Here's what I do:

1. Cut out the transfer that you're going to use
2. Take a really sharp knife and cut through the transfer, but only halfway though the background paper, but be careful to leave a circle in the middle holding the transfer together. Cut it leaving a circle in the middle in a "sunray" pattern so the transfer, when applied, can "fold itself" to fit the curve of a space marine shoulder pad.
3. Paint gloss varnish on shoulder pad.
4. Soak the transfer i clean water.
5. Apply the "cut" transfer onto shoulder pad.
6. When it's still wet, get a hairdryer and dry the transfer. Since it's a very soft plastic it will "melt" onto the shoulder pad before the harder plastic/resin/metal of the model.
7. Apply gloss varnish into shoulder pad
8. Apply matt varnish onto shoulder pad

The result? Check out my blood ravens log and you'll see plenty of examples...

I thought the Justaerin were only terminators. I could be wrong though.
I do like the idea of the Reavers paint scheme, which is pretty close to the way you've got the rest of your (excellent looking) SoH. I'm looking forward to how you do these guys.

Gorthaur
17-09-2013, 22:59
Thanks guys, as for the Justaerin I remember reading that *many* of them wore terminator suits, but perhaps situations would arise where that might not be the best option. The 1st company had 2 distinct formations so really they could be from the Catulans or Justaerin who knows. The scheme for my standard SoH is quite like the black/dark green on the tanks in betrayal, at least to my eyes. The way these models look though the details remind me of Horus' armor and I think they would look meaner in black/gold/red. Painting primarily black is going to be interesting though, I don't want the models to end up looking boring.

Great log, your sons of Horus and emperors children look fantastic. You've made your emperors children rather un-flamboyant and not too excessive, which is great theres still a strong regality and opulence to them without needing to look "precious". And I think that particularly suits your noise marine which looks unquestionably sinister. You're SoH green is also very good, not too bright and verging on to grey as I personally think it should.

congrats.

Thanks guys, work on these has slowed down quite a bit. However soon ill take a good few hours or more and try to finish off the Kakophoni. Ive also been running a log of Chaos Dwarfs on another site, which is a lot of work. And now they release Imperial Knights so I got a whole other distraction popping up. (I think I might just buy one, just for the fun of assembling and painting it). The purple was simply xereus purple base, which takes a few coats. nuln oil painted into the crevices. And Genestealer purple for highlights. I also paint white spots on hard edges/corners to give it a certain shine or popping look, I also did that for the black armor.

Not to mention the impending release of Warmaster Horus himself, I really hope Simon Egan did him justice.

Nice work mate, i've had a look through (perhaps i wasn't looking close enough) but i have to ask, what colours are you using for your SOH? they seem pretty close to the artwork. I'm about to start my own, so i'm interested to learn of peoples mixes.

Thanks, I can't remember off hand, but I recall somewhere in the first 3-4 pages of this thread I posted the recipe for the green.

Edit: found it;

"Knarloc green+Fenris Grey 60/40 mix as a base.
Nuln oil/Agrax Earthshade 50/50 painted carefully into the recesses
add some Astronomican Grey to the original mix for a lighter highlight
selectively highlight certain edges with pure Astronomican grey and paint the bolts/rivets with chainmail
glaze with thinned nuln oil."

these look great! where did you get the shoulder pad with the spikes? those look ace

Thanks, the spikes were taken off WHF knights of chaos weapons, or any other spiky bits I could find.

Well the Kakophoni are basically 85% finished, 4 done and the last one is where I have an issue. Somehow I lost the left arm that holds the weapon up. Im not sure what to do now, unless I can find someone online who sells the bit. I will post pictures as soon as the squad is finished though. I may very well end up selling the Kakophoni too, as I have too many other projects going and I don't want to do anymore of them...they are so much work. I am also hard at work on Orks as well

Absolutely fantastic! You've done a great job on these.
I'm painting Horus at the moment. After seeing your troops
it's inspired me to start a soh force.
Many thanks.

Thanks, your soh are looking good so far as well.

So I have an update, no SoH but my work on the Kakophoni is coming to an end.

Your Sons of Horus look great, and those Kakaphoni might just look even better. I especially like that you used the eye emblem on that shoulder, helping tie the models together.

Oh man, Gorthaur you really cannot stick to one project can you ;)

But I love each and every one of your projects and your EC are not different. They look amazing !

Thanks, and ive said it myself. Well I ended up getting a box of unopened DE Kabalite warriors cheap for 20$ a deal I couldn't resist. So those should pop up in my xenos log sooner or later. And those are great cause I already have everything I need, don't have to get new primer or paints like I would for Tyranids.

Thanks, originally I didn't plan on putting that shoulderpad on him but I am glad I did. I can see how the EC would look better, the purple armor and bluish stone bases works well together. And I almost want to say the process of painting the EC is simpler than the Sons of Horus. The only thing making the Kakaphoni take longer is the loads of detail they have, and the weapons.

Glad my best log is still here, its been a long time since i've done any work on Horus Heresy stuff. Last month I did buy Burning of Prospero though, and i'm 1/3rd through building it. While I may not be doing more Sons of Horus right now.. I intend to do my best job on the thousand sons and space wolves. Any leftover models in power armor I may do as Sons of Horus, but I plan on revising my green color entirely as I am no longer content with the mix of paints I used (which are OOP anyway). Money is a problem for me right now though and i'm having a hard time even getting all the paints I need, so I may get around to this project closer to the release of the inferno book. I've also put aside the entirety of the DW overkill box as a project i'll do...someday lol.
