View Full Version : If you had to trim your army down by 5 points, what would you drop?

Picture your latest army list. Got it? Maybe you even have it in front of you. Great!

Let's say that before you played a game with it, you realized that you'd made a slight error in the points and you're actually 5 points over the limit.

You feel obliged to correct the error and trim the list by 5 points (or more) to make it legal.

What do you drop?

Do you drop some magic item, do you drop a model from a unit, an upgrade, or do you make larger changes?

Personally, I'd drop the Potion of Speed on my Warboss - that little item has never done me any good anyway.

Woodelves: Potion of foolhardyness on my noble
Dwarfs: Brace of Pistols upgrade on my engineer (or add one and remove a warrior)
Lizardmen: A skink

I would drop two skinks and add the potion of speed to someone. Its grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!

I'd either drop the Ironcurse Icon from my BSB, or a single marauder. My sense of symmetry would probably force me to choose the Icon.

I'd drop two goblins. My horde would be down to 98 goblins. The pain xD

I'd drop my Hellstorm Rocket Battery! Used it for the first time last night. What a piece of junk. Even against an Orc and Goblin army I couldn't score a single wound all game!

Normally 5 points is easy to find. It's when you add up your list and realise it's 250+ points over that it gets hard!

Warhammer Rule #12: whenever you field a new unit, it will perform terribly. Give it at least 5 chances :p

I'd find something that cost 5 points or more. If the cheapest thing I could drop is more than 5 points, I'd also look to make up the difference somehow.

I'd drop a sword n' board 'un and take the points hit. Silly as it seems, as a sacrificial unit, I need every goblin that's in it. Ironcurse Icon, if it's in my list, is far from the first thing I'll remove.

I have a tendancy to put too much in my armies anyway, and have to undertake some serious pruning...

If it gets to the laast 5 points, then I look at my magic items first, see if I can drop, or change them around to get under the magic (pun intended) limit

usually one model from a unit in which I intend to place a character.

I would change a magical weapon to a normal one or downgrade it.

Probably drop a magic item. They're usually the last thing i add to my list anyway so last in, first out.

If I have a cheap 5 point magic item I would drop it, if not I would drop a troop model or two.

Crube
28-09-2012, 12:55
I tend to run my units close to the actual numbers I need to house a character, hence why i go down the magic item route first.

No joy there, then equipment comes next...

2 zombies, sure I'll get them back soon anyway:)

A Swordsman or a Skeleton.

Halberdiers, while technically costing less, are far more valuable to drop.

WoC: a hound (although having 9 hounds in a unit would bug me)
Skaven: a clanrat w/ spear+shield
Lizardmen: a skink
Woodelves: more difficult, swap out a 15pt item for a 10 pt item, change/drop a lord aspect... not too sure

#3: Statistics don't mean jack. double 1's happen all the time when charging and double 6's are the standard Ld roll.

My units usually statr with full command but this sometimes gets trimmed if I'm desperate for points

Silly vampire players saying they would drop a skeleton or zombie... we all know you were already at the 25% minimum and it's impossible to trim any more from that section :p

whatever

Love to be able to drop a skeleton or zombie but always on my core limit! Would have to be a magic item.

haha just my thought Malorian as I was typing!

I play Wood Elves, I don't think there is anything cheaper than a 6 point Musician and those are needed.

In Beastmen I drop a Gor (I have ~40).

From my Brets, a M@A from my unit of 39.
From my Dwarfs, maybe a Rune of Stone off some hero or a flaming rune from a WM. (I usually have too many anyway)

Damn I was hoping no one would notice!

The next cheapest model/item is 13pts :(

Id drop a troop, although this can often affect your min core requirement, that when it gets annoying....

Von Wibble
30-09-2012, 11:01
Agreed, first to go as long as core requirements are met is a core trooper or 2.

Then a special trooper.

I would never drop a 5pt magic item as I know that the game I do that would be teh one where I really need it. Potion of speed on my witch hunter for example is amazing, and Ironcurse Icon can literally be a life saver. I don't take many items but the ones I have ar important.

I'de alter the setup of an assassin to make him cheaper, then use any spare points to add an extra model (or more) to a unit.
Same thing would happen if I found my list was actually a few points under, I wouldn't just add the cheapest thing possible to make up the points.

Lord Inquisitor

Ogres: if I have the rock eye or warrior bane sword that can go first. Otherwise something more important like the ironcurse or lookout gnoblar.

Daemons: I'd like to drop something off core but I can't! Already at exactly 25%. Going to have to be a torment blade from a character or musician from my seekers. I was making a list the other day and after I'd put in a soul grinder and cut every bit of fat I was still 5 points over. Agonizing!

Warhammer Rule #12: whenever you field a new unit, it will perform terribly. Give it at least 5 chances :p
Warhammer rule #16: Whenever you play with Empire 8th edition, expect it to be utter crap. Give it at least 5 chances before you shelve it to appease Urgat:D

On topic: I would most likely drop a Spearmen. I generally have no problem of filling my Core requirement (I usually field well over the required 25%). I don't use magic items so I can't drop one of those and the last time I removed the musician from my Pistoliers they bolted at the first sign of trouble and never rallied...

2 golbins from my unit of 101. Since the only 5pt magic item i have is ironcurse on a gobln shaman, I can't really take away that from the horde.

A State Trooper.

Probably an entire unit (and the character I'd decided to put in it if there is one) and then I'd replace it with a different unit (with different character if applicable) that costs 5 points less.

Or if I was somehow unable to do that, a quick re-jig of magic items should do the job. Though I tend to always make my lists a few points under the limit just incase.

WE: ... I'd cry and start the list again from scratch.

My VC usually play with a bloated Core section anyway, so I would most likely just drop 2 Zombies and call it a day. Otherwise, that Ironcurse Icon might go, as it never seems to make much a difference.

The Odor
08-10-2012, 12:49
CD: A Hobgoblin
WoC: A marauder. If the list doesn't have them a shield on the BsB. If I dont have one of those? I would wonder who swapped the lists!

Scalebug

Empire.

Potion of foolhardiness or Ironcurse item, as I only seem to remember using either of them a third of my games anyway... :p

That, or one of those spearmen who ends up outside of a movementtray after a character has joined them, and often stands around by his lonesome looking lazy after his unit has moved...

Do people really put any value in the ironcurse icon? It works what, once every six months or something?

If you can make one save because of it, it has paid for itself ;)

I would drop a champion upgrade.
