Hey guys!

I have finally given up on the lesser races of the universe, and I'll be focusing solely on Eldar from now on (until something shiny catches my eye I guess). Given the success my previous Eldar plog had and all the great comments I received there, I decided to start a new plog for just the Eldar. This will cover ALL of the Eldar, so Craftworld Elder, Dark Eldar, Harlequins and Exodites.
Bear in mind that this will probably be a very slow plog as usual, as I have other stuff to do in life as well. I do have a running start though, as I just completed my Harlequin army!

First up, an overview of the army:

I saw them last week on the gt. Did you win bp?

One thing i thought was a bit disappointing were the jetbikes. I think you could have done better with the white parts. Further i really love your painting works.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! It really means a lot to me to see you all like it. The army has been a pain to paint, and even though there's plenty of things I can/should do better I'm really quite proud of the army as a whole.

Solid work. I heavily admire the terrain in the first picture. How's that made?

I started off with a piece of MDF. I then built up the hills using styrofoam to get the general shape. After that I created the cliffsides if you will using cork tiles and pieces of slate. I filled any gaps with filler, and added a top layer of cork to the hills for added strength. After that it's just adding some sand and paint!

I was nominated for best painted, but sadly I did not win it. The jetbike canopies were the last thing I painted for this army, which was friday night before the GT. So I'll admit I could have done better on those, but I had run out of time.

Thanks mate! Here's some WIP shots of what I managed did this weekend, in between doing stuff for uni.

Behold the king and queen of cheese! Well, some WIP shots of the man. Still got a LOT of gems to do, a lot of general detail work and I need to fix some mistakes. But hopefully this gives you an idea of what Eldrad will look like when he's done.

Lovely work, subscribed!

I actually have a Harlequin army halfway through conversion too :)2 troupes built, Farseer waiting to be built, warlocks built, Solitaire (counts as Jain Zar or Autarch) waiting to be built, storm guardians waiting to be built, vyper (venom, like yours) waiting to be built, jetbikes waiting to be built... just need to buy a serpent for the guardians.

How did you make the gun nozzles for the rangers? I am converting some corsair rangers (DElf corsair dragon cloaks, yeah baby!)and had a similar idea for shuriken/splinter rifles spliced together... but I haven't found a suitable bit for the tip of the rifle. Any hints?!

Just fantastic Radium. I've always loved Harlequins and I think you've got the combination between multi-coloured and dark and grim (which for me is what Harlequins should be) absolutely spot on. I really love those Spiritwalkers, the posing and painting is ace and the way that you've incorporated the Harlequin theme into everything (thinking about the Rangers in particular) is really impressive. I must admit I thought the jetbikes were unfinished because the white canopy looks quite plain in comparison to the rest of the army, would love to see you go back to them and go to town. Eldrad is looking fantastic, looking forward to seeing him finished.

@ Jonahmaul & silverstu: Thanks guys! I'm hoping to finish Eldrad tomorrow, though I can't make any promises.

Ah true master never reveals his secrets! Nah, just kidding mate, they're the bottom half of the Guardian grenade pack (or at least, that's what I think those bits are).

Unfortunately, the board is currently at my parents place, so I can't take an army shot on the display board. I do, however, have two other photos taken at the Dutch GT. Sadly, those don't cover the entire army, but it's something! I'll try to get a friend (who is a photographer) to take some decent pictures sometime!

Up next: some Wraihtguard (please ignore the rather poor quality of the picture, I really couldn't be bothered to take a new one after I noticed how bad this one is)

I think your varnish is a bit glossy. Is that intended because you like it that way or did you want it matt? Especially on Eldrad it gives a lot of reflections making it harder to see the cloths. The painting itself seems pretty solid and "original Eldrad schemed".

Really liking Eldrad, I hate how much photos show up mistakes! Makes me appreciate miniatures so much more when the photographs show them as good. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Wraithguard. Still can't help but look at the Wraithlords every time I come to your PLOG, I love them so much!

He's not varnished at all! It's probably because of the light being so close to the model when I took the picture that you get the highly reflective effect on the model. I'll try to take a new picture later this week. Can't make any promises though, as this week is VERY busy for me.

Take your time, mate. Still interesting why it is that glossy then. You're using some kind of medium with your paints or so?

Nope. I have no idea why it looks to glossy in the pictures, it's rally matte in real life. Could be the light or something, I really don't know.

fabulous. keep up the good work, mate.

Thanks mate! Always nice to hear from you.

Anyway, new stuff! I really fell in love with distortion technology lately, so I painted my Wraithguard and D-Cannons. The picture quality is - as usual - really poor. I got a new phone/camera yesterday so I'm trying out different settings and whatnot to improve the quality slightly, so please stick with me while I try to figure that out!

Most of it is pretty straightforward and it's all done in a relatively simple paintjob. I just wanted to get some stuff done and posted here. I can already see some bits I need to fix when I look at the pictures, but for now this will have to do.
Hope you like it!

Thanks! Means quite a lot to me, coming from an accomplished painted such as yourself :D!

It's really simple though, it's blended from bleached bone to a mix of graveyard earth and vallejo sepia wash. Yes, a wash. All my blending is done using the wetblending technique and I don't like using retarders and such, so I need a really watery mix to be get a smooth blend.

Looks amazing Radium. How do you get that kind of black, especially in the Guardian/weapon platform pics?

I use Coat d'Arms black. It tends to seperate, but if you give it a good shade before painting it's a very nice black colour. Highlights are done using various browns and bone colours mixed into the black, such as GW charadon granite, vallejo sea grey and GW bleached bone. There's no real set recipe for it, I just mix in some of those colours and slap them on. If I feel a highlight is too dark/light/cold I mix in some other colours.

I (finally) finished these War Walkers last monday as I needed them for a game. I actually did most of the painting on these years ago, but never actually finished them. Nothing too spectacular, but I felt like showing these to you guys anyway.

I will, when I have completed a full army or something similar. Right now there's just not enough to justify an army shot IMHO.

Radium do you paint your canopies free hand?

Yes, I do. I don't own an airbrush or anything and I never will, I just don't like the look of airbrushed minis. So it's all done by hand! I'm rather old skool like that...

The warlock conversion is pretty cool and everything is painted really well.

Thanks! The conversion is something I've had in my head for a LONG time now, but since I'm horrible at sculpting I never actually had the guts to do it. I am really pleased with the end result though, but I'm not looking forward to making more of them :/.

Love this thread, and I'm happy to see you back at it.

Thanks Fable! I fully intend to keep going now that I've built up some momentum and I actually enjoy painting minis again. Painting this stuff takes some time, but it's well worth it I feel.

I don't know what I'll be painting next (though I'm thinking Warp Spiders or a Wraithlord), but for now here's a pic of some new toys I cleaned:

Ah, a 2nd Nightwing... I always struggle with myself whether to buy or not to buy another. When FW first released it, I didn't like the design very much and thought the Phoenix was much more Eldar-like. But now I believe this model is the best thing Jes Goodwin ever made a drawing and FW a model for. Looking forward to see what you will make of it. Btw, the resin-intakes look horribly large. Yet again a model that seems to have more vents than actual resin and it will be a horror to remove them without damaging the wings.

The vents on this one aren't nearly as bad as those on my first Nightwing :/. It's a lovely, lovely model. I now own two Nightwings and two Phoenices, and all of those incredibly gorgeous models. I really wanted/needed the second Nightwing as a lot of the guys at my club have started fielding lots of Flyers and I felt one Nightwing just didn't do it for me. And I'd rather just stick to my Craftworlders instead of having to rely on allies every game.

Anyway, the inspiration is strong with me today, I got this beast built:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130210_004.jpg

The Wraithseer is one incredibly sexy model. Next step: sticking some sand on his base and whip out the spraypaint! If all goes well, I might get him painted within the next couple of days. Arms are magnetized for eas of transport, and the various loincloths and codpieces will be painted separately so I can apply some freehands more easily on those. Some minor greenstuff work to be done as well, but that shouldn't take to long. I deliberately went for a very static pose, as I feel that fits the big guys best. And now I finally have a Wraithlord with a D-Cannon, something I've wanted to have for years now :D!

Right, progress has been slow these last couple of days. I had malaria, so painting little plastic/resin dudes wasn't really one of my priorities. I'm feeling better now though, so here's some new WIP shots of the Wraithseer. Just painting a bunch of gems really makes a difference!

As you can see, I am nowhere near as good at freehanding as some of the true masters on this forum are (Hendarion, I'm looking at you). and this extreme closeup does not really help at all, nor does the exaggerated balance created by rather worthless editing software. This does help me improve the freehand though, so the blow to my ego is well worth it!

Still to do:
- Highlights on the spear/shield
- Painting the shaft of the spear
- Loincloth/streamers
- The "face"

Any ideas what to do with the face? I was thinking painting in a galaxy or something, but I'm open to suggestions.

WoW, Malaria, where have you been? The Wraithseer looks fantastic, I love the red on the blades. The freehand looks slightly rough but it's still great. Very few people have the balls to do freehand and the only way we can tell it looks slightly rough is because you've taken up close photos to share with us. What colour are you going to do the 'face'?

Wow ok hope you are doing better now, Radium!
No joking with malaria. All the best!

To the seer:
Yeah, I know the rules and yep, the psychic powers + d-cannon are something the opponent has to be aware of.
Freehanding is great so far, the colour transition is well done.
To the "slightly rough look":
You can improve it by painting the black areas over wit pure black, looks a bit washed out due to the painting process.
Also straighten the edges of the freehand with black, trying to get clear lines and clear roundings.
You can do it, so keep it up!

Part of a medical experiment. Did not go quite as planned though :P. The good folks at the hospital are helping me out though, so I'll be fine.

As for the face: I have no idea yet. I was thinking about doing a spiral galaxy (astronomer and all that), but I'm open to suggestions!

That's exactly what I planned to do. I did refine the freehand quite a bit, but I don't have any close ups to show this time around.

Whoops! It's look fantastic, I love the smoothness you get in the colours and black is so hard to paint so very well done. I vote for....ummmm.....a spiral galaxy type effort on the face! Seriously that sounds awesome and I really think you should go to it. If not I'd suggest a dark green to complement the purple but I love the galaxy idea.

You really should! It's an awesome model (well, I'm utterly in love with the Wraithlord model, it's easily my favourite plastic kit GW produces). The rules for this beast are just icing on the cake I suppose.

I really like how you combined the runes for Farseers and Wraithlords for his loin cloths.

Thanks! But credit where credit's due: I just took the idea from the FW model. Even though I feel their pose and paintjob is horrible, they at least got some of the rune ideas right!

Next up: two more Wraithlords to get my whole wraith host out of the way. After that... who knows. I've got some rangers, guardians, warp spiders, fire dragons and two phoenixes started I should really finish some time, and LOADS of other stuff to paint. I've also been busy converting the Phoenix Lords to a more modern look, so those need to some paint eventually. And then there's the bonesinger, limited edition autarch, corsairs and dark eldar I could paint. I really do have too many Eldar models.

I find black very hard to paint and you've pulled it off exceptionally and the other colours complement it perfectly, top work. Well, with about 14000 pts of the buggers (and that's counting only 5 out of 7 Wraithlords, 1 out of 5 Avatars, and not counting about 100 foot troops I have somewhere), I either have too many Eldar models, or too few superheavies. And I'm thinking I might actually think it's the latter. I've been wanting a scorpion for a while now, so I've made a deal with myself: when I've painted 3500 pts of Ulthwé stuff I getting one!

Thanks man! The black is a pain to paint, but I do think it's well worth every second spent on it. There's just something about the Ulthwé colour scheme that really grabs me, and with the addition of purple instead of the more traditional bright red I feel it really fits the 40k universe as I'd like it to see (really, properly grimdark).

Beautiful colours on the Wraithseer and the face-plate detail is great

Yep, that's the Lady Hellion, Baroness Sathonyx! I've got some plans for my DE force that involves quite a number of beastmasters, so I thought the Baron would fit quite well with that! All of my DE will be painted to match the models I painted about two years ago (see pictures below).

It's all wetblended over a citadel bleached bone base, citadel blending bleached bone into a mix of citadel graveyard earth and vallejo sepia wash. It's really tricky and really frustrating at times, but the end result is well worth the effort!

Alright, so I haven't been completely idle these last couple of weeks. I've been really busy with real life stuff and some important changes in my life are coming up (uni -> work transition and all that), and what little free time I had mostly went into playing some BF3: End Game and Dragonborn. Just like Hendarion said: with a lot of patience :D! It's really not that hard though, I just painted some basically random shapes (predominantly larger towards the centre of the model and using straight edges instead of circular shapes) and highlighted those. I'll try to do a tutorial later on, but that'll have to wait until next week.

Haha, you're welcome! The phoenix is an amazing model to work on, an absolute joy to paint.

And a general announcement:
This log won't be updated for the coming couple of months. I'll be in the US for the next three months, and I won't be bringing any hobby stuff with me. I'll get right back on it when I'm back though! Probably with a new codex and a couple of new goodies! I'll still hang around the forums etc, but I won't be painting anything for a while.

Brother Captain Lucian: This one is just for you!

The All-Amazing Radium Guide to Void Dragon Scales 2000!
I only now notice how bad the pictures are :/. Hopefully you guys can still make out what's going on!

Step 1:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_001.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/Niels_fotos/media/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_001.jpg.html)

Paint the scales with a mix of blood red, dark flesh and black. Try to paint larger scales towards the centre of the model, and smaller scales towards the edges. Some small scales to fill the gaps between large scales work very nicely. Also make sure the scales are convex polygons for the most part, avoid circles at all times!

Step 2:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_002.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/Niels_fotos/media/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_002.jpg.html)

Go over the scales with a blood red and dark flesh mixture to build some colour, cover the entire scale.

Step 3:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_003.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/Niels_fotos/media/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_003.jpg.html)

Highlight large areas of the scales with the same mix as used in step 2, I basically covered about 2/3 of each scale in this step , starting at a random edge and covering the adjacent egdes. This leaves the opposite edge untouched, creating some colour transitions.

Step 4:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_004.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/Niels_fotos/media/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_004.jpg.html)

Highlight the same edges as chosen in step 3, only covering a smaller area this time. I used a mix of blood red, dark flesh and vomit brown.

Step 5:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_010.jpg (http://s155.photobucket.com/user/Niels_fotos/media/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130426_010.jpg.html)

Again, highlight the same edges as before, only covering just that edge (and the opposing edge on larger scales), using a blood red, dark flesh and golden yellow mix.

That's it! You can always add more highlights or shading if you like, but this is how I did it on my Phoenix, and I'd say it looks decent enough.
Sorry for the sloppy highlights on the scales by the way, I did all of that with a no. 3 brush since I couldn't be bothered to grab a smaller one...

'Decent enough' is a slight understatement - it looks really good :)

I can't believe you did such a big test piece for the step-by-step, that would have taken me hours! I am a particularly slow painter though...

I have designs on getting a VD Phoenix, but wraith-goodness comes first. As well as my Revenant. All of which is going to be my 'learning to airbrush' project. Can't do any of that until at least November though (although, not really complaining because the reason is "going traveling for 3 months").

I'm back guys! After a very interesting three months in the US, I'm finally back home and can start painting Eldar again :D!

Without further ado, this is all the stuff that was waiting for me when I got back:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s303/Niels_fotos/Eldar%20v3/WP_20130801_001.jpg
That's a LOT of stuff. Two wraithknights, 20 wraithguard, a Crimson Hunter, a plastic Farseer, Apoc book, ltd ed. codex and ltd ed Iyanden book, some FW books, and some other odds and ends.

And this is what I've done so far:

It's been way too hot and humid to paint these past two days, so I didn't get nearly as much painting done as I would have liked. Still, here's some progress:

It looks so basic so far but I am already excited to see more! What are those FW weathering powders like? I've only ever done my weathering with paint and have been debating picking up something like this (probably a non-GW/FW alternative).

Thanks guys! Hopefully this won't disappoint :D!

What are those FW weathering powders like?

I think they're awesome! I've never used any other weathering powders though...
In all seriousness: they're really easy to apply (just brush 'em on!) and manipulate with some alcohol. With some practice, the effects are really cool!

ANYWAY.

Just getting even somewhat decent pictures of a model this big is an interesting challenge, but I hope you guys can at least get an impression of the big guy! Still some finishing up to do, but I didn't want to keep it from you.
Also: that's a 101 painted gems on this beast. Not good for my sanity.

As always: any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Looks great Radium! Love the progression into purple on the shield and the bone on the weapons especially- provides a great counterpoint to the black armour [which is done brilliantly].
My one suggestion would be his base could be tarted up a bit- it's good but I think you could add a bit more interest [more scenics/wrecks/discarded equipment ..].

Thanks! I certainly intend to do something with the visor, but I don't know yet whether I'll go the astronomical object route again or something else entirely.

Thanks for the feedback! I agree the base is a bit bland, but I really wanted to get back to painting after all that time instead of wasting time building an interesting base. Still, I'll keep it in mind for my next bases! And I might just go back to this one when I feel like it.

I would want to put an 'Ideon' visor style effect to mine, but I don't think my own painting can pull it off. I think you would be able to though. The effect is like it is traveling horizontally through a starfield contained within the visor (so stars with motion blur horizontally).

Unfortunately I can't find a good image for it to explain.

The 'blank' look is also good on Wraith units though.

Love the knight. Great to see him painted up, and I know how crazy it can be painting all those blasted gems.

That black looks... fantastic. Is it just special paint, or your lighting or is there highlighting I can barely tell?!

It'd tie int the Wraithknight and the Wraithseer, but at the same time I'd like the seer to be unique. I still haven't figured out what I'll do though.

Nope, I just bought two Wraithknights :D. Ands now that both are built I'm thinking I need a third one. Just because I can :shifty:....

You're back! There's still plenty of work left to be done on the knight, but I quite pleased with it so far. And painting gems is just part of the pain that is playing Eldar. Still worth it though!

That black looks... fantastic. Is it just special paint, or your lighting or is there highlighting I can barely tell?!

It's part highlights, part reflection I think. I use Coat d'Arms black, which is by far the best black paint I've ever come across and it allows for some very rich highlighting combinations through various other colours. I'll try to take some better pictures some time though, so you can get a more "pure" view of my painting.

Bah, airbrushing... Painting should be done by hand ;)!

Anyway, I'm working on some new stuff! First up, some wraithguard that still need heads and lots of work on their guns mostly:
