View Full Version : Help! Winter Steel Legion of Pig Iron Cadians? (PAINTED PICS)

Help people!
I'm torn between two Guard regiments I really like: Cadians with Pig Iron helmets and Steel Legion in a winter outfit. I want to paint these as a distraction from my Chaos Black Legion, on which I focused for a good year now. And as every Chaos painter knows, you can paint only THAT much gold trim before going nuts! So these guardsmen are there to alleviate the pressure.

Only, I don't know which variety yo paint, I like 'em both! So I painted up two squads to really see what they look like in a group. What do you guys think is the coolest looking of the two?

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r509/bcderue/cadian1.jpg

I've got about 80 Pig Iron helmets and 70 Steel legion figs lying around.

I thinks the Cadians look better up close, but the SL have more impact on the table (thanks to the high contrast).

Both look awesome, but I would choose the steel legion, just for the ability to jump out the table.

I'd love to see the cadians in the steel legions white cloth scheme. Regardless, I prefer the look of the cadians, especially the autoguns!

Yeah i think I'm gonna have to go the Cadians because you've put in the work to make them truly yours. But now I'll tell you that you should paint both up as is.

Steel Legion. Because they are awesome. But I would paint the gasmasks in leathery colour for further contrast. That said they are painted both very well.

Well, personally I'd say the steel Legion, but I have a huge love for the older metal regiments to begin with so I"m somewhat biased.

However, both look very good and to be honest, the Cadian Pig Iron option does make life a lot easier for you when it comes to modelling as with the Steel elgion you'll be pretty limited to your choice of different troopers/heavye weapons and options unless you'll go very heavy on converting. With the Cadians pretty much most options are available in plastic so easy access and easy conversion possibilities.

Ofcourse you can also just use the Steel elgion for the platoons and the Cadians for your veterans/stormtroopers, enough options in a guard army to include both (or maybe even go for an "old style guard army" which includes several regiments).

Thanks alot people! I'm a sucker for metal armies too.. maybe it's an age thing (I grew up with GW during the 90s).
I think I'll make some Steel Legion autocannon teams (slightly converted HB teams). I love these prone models. If they don't sway me to the SL side, I'll do the Cadians! ;)

Edit: btw Mods this is not a blog, feel free to move it to the right forum (sorry).

this, do the masks in the same leather brown as your other details, and it's a win

I like those winter steel legion, but paint the gas masks brown. And make it a log! :D And how did you paint those whites?

As much as I love Steel Legions, I'm going to have to vote for your Cadian conversions. Like The Marshel said, maybe try painting them with the Arctic scheme and see how that looks. Either way, good stuff!

Cadians with Pig Iron Helms. They look the coolest and will be easiest to expand once you've exhausted your supply. SL will be a bugger to find new ones that don't cost the earth.

The Steel Legion is a nice change to all the Cadians you see all around. Only problem is as earlier said heavy weapons and special weapons but if your not afraid to make some conversions go with Steel Legion!

BTR: I will be eventually off loading my SL once I get onto upgrading my guard to Death Korps... but that's not going to be for a while.

I so call dibbs! The SL are definitly the way to go. You may be limited, but they will look absolutely gorgeous on the tabletop.

only limited in special weapons

Id go for the Cadians with PigIron bits. That said they look very advanced, maybe more like a Drop Troop force.

both look really good. I love the steel legion figures. They are a pretty solid choice for IG. They are proportioned better than the plastic cadians. I would choose them if you can get enough figures for a force.

I'd go with the Steel Legion. They just look more unique and will jump out more on the tabletop.
I don't know much about IG in general so I don'd know how much of a hassle it will be for you to use those models, special/heavy weapons and such, but I always pick stuff for how it looks on the table anyway :D

That said your Cadians are beautiful and based on the close-up shots I'd probably give them my vote. I'm just positive that massed up on the tabletop the SL will blow minds.

Thank you for all the replies people! I took your advice to heart and went for Steel Legion as my primary distraction for my Black Legion painting duties. :)
Here is some more pics of two autocannon teams I painted last week:

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r509/bcderue/steellegionautocannon6.jpg

I'm in love with this prone WW2 German MG42 pose. The barrel is just a clipped off stubber barrel from the IG vehicle sprue.

http://i1169.photobucket.com/albums/r509/bcderue/steellegionautocannon5.jpg

The frosty effect is my *dang* Vallejo matt varnish which I put on too thick. :(

Sorry but that is amazing!

Love your painting style and your choice of colours especially for the helmets. Do you consider it to be canvas for the helmet or paint? In the latter case you could include a simple "chipped" effect. I think it would be very nice.

On another note: Would you mind if I copy your autocannon pattern? I was toying with the idea of converting lascannon squads but I think your idea ist better and goes well with the idea of a mobile, well equipped force.

BasetheRuin

Thanks Don, great idea, I'll put some chipping on the helmets as it is indeed meant as whitewash paint. And if you want to do your autocannons the same way, of course be my guest! It's not like I own the idea ;)

DonKarst0n
12-11-2012, 15:24
Do not say such a thing or I will copyright the pattern. Muahaha! (and then get sued by GW)

Is this going to be your army log now? If so consider it subscribed (which it already is) and if not please make sure to post a link in here.

I think I'll start up a seperate log on my SL and let this thread slip into oblivion. But you got me fired up! By the way, I just stumbled on your Steel Legion thread from a while back. Awesome stuff!! Really digging your camo schemes. The only thing that stops me from doing camo patterns myself is that it would take me forever to finish them..

Why not use the pig iron ones and paint them the same as the others? use them as the opposite, as either rank n file or vet's

DonKarst0n

That is great news. I will kick off my army project anew at the end of Novembre (as planned at the moment). But this time with a more defined idea of the camo scheme and the setting.

Steel Legion is about to invade the imperial project logs!

Gets me thinking inot repainting my Steellegion- it could be achieved- just the cloaks and the tanks and the planes, oh well...

Wow Im in love with these Steel Legion guys. You did a fantastic job ! Especially the camo on the autocannons looks awesome. Im also for chipping on the helmets. By the way I prefer the white helmets :)

Any vehicles in the future ? Could you tell us how you did the white uniforms ?

Keep it up !

I was going to agree with 'ilikebmxbikes' and say do a combined force... then I switched to page 2. Steel Legion. Definitely Steel Legion. The autocannon teams are just fantastic.

I'm glad you chose the SL, they're so characterful, and the colour scheme you've got for them looks pretty excellent. It's eye catching but makes perfect sense. I'll be looking at this one, boss.

they both look great but personally i like the cadians better. green would be camo on more game tables anyways (maybe a dark grey urban camo for some of the cadians as well?) but very nice paint jobs on both so whatever you decide will look great.

edit; looks like you went SL; the hev weps you painted up there look awesome!

Really like the Steel Legion troopers! One suggestion though, you should weather their helmets they way you've weathered the autogun, they look way to white now. I think they would look great with that hastily whitewashed look.

Those autocannons are awesome! Glad you went with the SL, when they're all massed on the tabletop the army will look all kinds of cool. Really nice camo on the autocannon body and barrel too. Looking forward to more!

Hi people, thank you for all the replies! Just came by to give a heads up: this plog won't be updated for a while. i have GOT to finish my black legion first. :)

But thanks again for all your great suggestions! (That great helmet tip will see its translation to the painting table)

Hello BasetheRuin,

I hope you are still following this thread....

I just wanted to say that your winter Steel Legion are just awesome. I'm currently trying to paint a "white" Valhalla army and I bought some Steel Legion as veterans. I would like to ask how did you manage to get this creamy white look ? Or this creamy look is due to the pictures?

Thx !

PS : feel free to anwser in MP
