Hello fellow survivors, and welcome to the Apocalypse!

I've been toying with the idea of starting this plog for a while, and the third season of the Tale of Skirmish gamers, plus the Indiegogo campaign that renewed my interest for the game, plus the fact that I just started a third faction motivated me enough to do so. So here it goes...

EDEN is a post-apocalyptic skirmish game I discovered a few months ago that's got all the things I love in a wargame: small model count (I'm a very slow painter, so...), great rules that make every game unique, and amazing, characterful, models. I've already got models for three factions: the Matriarchy ( a new post-apocalyptic church controled by women where males serve as slaves - Sisters of Battle gone wrong, that is :p), Clan Bamaka (bio-hazard mutants from Africa), and the Jokers (circus themed Eastern-Europe gangers).

As with any plog, my objective here is to show my progress, and, first and foremost, to get comments and criticism to improve my work.

I'll start with the models I have painted in the last few weeks, models from the Jokers range. Then, as I find some time and I can manage to get some order in my Photobucket account, I'll show you older miniatures.

So here's Stipan, painted in a well known fast-food clown color scheme (the model's only skill is called "insulting belch", so you all understand I had to paint him this way:D):

And Kirril, some kind of gipsy illusionist:

More stuff to come in the next few days.

C&C welcomed!

Thanks, Engel!

Here are some of the mutants of Clan Bamaka.

Gwala and Amagudu:

And the voodoo witch Jumamosi:

I have a third Bamaka model painted, but the pictures are rather blurry. I hope I can take better pictures soon (although I really struggle taking pictures of dark skinned models...).

Lately, I've been working on another Jokers model, Grigory. Here are some WIP shots:

I think the yellow is a bit lacklustre. Should I add more shading, or should I highlight a little more ?

Is that guy pulling timebomb rabbits out of a hat??

I'd love to get in on some EDEN minis. Alas for time and money!

Yes, these are rabbit bombs :D They roam the battlefield until somoene gets too close...

I strongly recommand this game. Great rules, and great models. And rules and model stats are all available for free on their website, so you can have a look at the game, and you always know what you are buying.

Love the fact that there is an Eden plog, and they are well painted. Been wanting to pull the trigger on the ISC for a long time now, but I missed the Indiego campaign.

Consider me subbed.

Thanks, Serraphim!

Grigory is finished, but I have yet to take decent photos of him. In the meantime, I have WIP pics of two other joker models I'm working on.

Mikail:

And Yorg:

The tale of skirmish gamers is really getting me motivated, so these bad boys should be finished in the next few weeks!

Are these 33mm or something else?

Rotokultaxe
22-12-2012, 18:53
They are 30 mm models, although some of them (mutants, most of the time) are quite larger.

New Year's update!

Just received my stuff from the Indiegogo campaign, so that should get me motivated for a while :)

Oh my, those look absolutely excellent! I love the polka dots on the patches and your yellow is magnificent. You really bring out the character in these. And I heartily second the recommendation for the game - it's fast yet extremely tactical.

Really love these, very smooth and generally great painting which really brings out how good the sculpts are. Keep it up!

Thanks a lot guys!

I just finished painting my favorite model of the Jokers range (and I would say of the whole EDEN range), Yorg. I really enjoyed painting him and I've spent a little extra time to get the best of my painting skills on this bad boy. I even challenged myself in doing two kinds of yellows on the model, and some freehand radioactive sign on the barrel. The skin is probably the best I have ever done on a model, so it's a personnal satisfaction here. Only downside, I'm more or less satisfied with how the luchador mask came out, but at the moment, I have no idea on how to improve it.

Your flesh tones on all of these are really excellent. What paint range are you using?

R.

Rotokultaxe

For the skin, I start with a basecoat of Midlund flesh (P3). I then do the shading with a mix of Midlund flesh+graveyard earth (GW)+codex grey (GW). The grey is to make the skin look a bit dirty. Highlights are done with a mix of Midlund flesh and Menoth white highlight (P3). Hope that helps !

Small update. I've been working on Serguei lately, and gave myself the challenge of doing some OSL. I've tried this technique a few times in the past, but rarely on a large area of the model. Here's the model without the lighting effect:

http://i1232.photobucket.com/albums/ff370/Rotokultaxe/Bonshommes549.jpg

I'll be doing the OSL in the next few days and I hope I won't ruin a model I've already spent lots of time on :P

Rotokultaxe

Finished Serguei with OSL (it took a lot more time than I expected, but I'm rather satisfied with it):

Thanks a lot! For painting yellow, the first thing to consider is the basecoat. You must first make sure the area you are about to paint in yellow is a perfect white. Otherwise, you will need much more coats (you then risk losing details, and you waste a bit of time...). Always thin your paints: it will take more time to have a perfect coverage, but you won't have streaks on your model- and streaks are bad when you start highlighting/shading. For the above models, it took an average of 7-8 coats of yellow for the basecoat. So it's a time consuming color (not very hard to master, but time consuming).

The recipe I used: basecoat of Yriel yellow (GW). Shading with a mix of Yriel yellow and Steel legion drab (GW), adding progressively more Steel legion drab to the mix as you go in the more shadowy areas. Highlighting is made with a mix of Yriel yellow and Menoth white highlight (P3), progressively adding Menoth white highlight as you go for the raised areas, until you get to almost pure Menoth white highlight.
Voilą!

Another finished model! This time, a lovely, colorful lady. I tried to emphasise the contrasts in the skintones and yellow. Tell me what you think.

"Afro circus! Afro circus! Polka-dot, polka-dot, afro CIRCUS!"

Excellent paintjob, on that. I wonder, though, whether - given how nice the sculpt and painting are - you should very gently (and with the assistance of some soft cloths), bend he posture backwards just a couple of millimetres, because her weight seems just a smidge too far forwards for her casual pose.

Thanks for the comments!

@Precinctomega: I agree the posture is a bit awkward but I fear I might damage the ankles if I were to bend the model backward :(

Small update: a circus needs some fearsome animals, so I've been working on one lately :). Here's a WIP of Mishka:

At last, I have finished Mishka the bear! I don't know how many hours I put on this monster, but it's probably the model I have spent the most time on in a while. Lots of surface to paint on this model, and a lot of different textures (hair, fabric, flesh, claws, metal, broken glass) that require different techniques. But overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the result:

It's been a while, but I managed to get another Joker done in the last weeks: Bogdana. I've been working a lot on the skin and metal parts of my models lately, and while I feel my painting has improved, I'm still not satisfied... Your comments, tips and tricks about skin and NMM are welcomed!

And some WIP of a matriarchy model that's been sitting on my workbench for a few months and that I finally decided to touch again. I've been experimenting with blueish metal NMM on this one:

Another lovely but dangerous lady, this time from the Matriarchy. It's been a refreshing change of style: I worked on a limited palette of cold colors, except for the skin, and experimented with some blue steel NMM for the first time.
