View Full Version : Recommend me some comets?

As WarSeer is such a varied community, I felt I might try asking here.

Iím intending to get a telescope in the near future and maybe try a bit of amateur star-gazing and whatnot.

Now, I know very little on the subject but was just wondering if we (as a world), or the UK if it needs to be more specific, are going to be in a position to view any passing comets or other celestial bodies in the next few years?

Your thread title made me do a double take :D

What you are talking about is periodic comets (the ones that come around predictably). There's a list here:

In my experience, it's the unpredictable ones that drop in once and disappear that are more spectacular (eg. Hale Bopp). If you want a list of interesting space phenomena, I recommend http://www.spaceweather.com/

The new year is coming around, see if you can pick up a copy of Sky and Telescope magazine with the list of astronomical events for 2013 (I presume they are still doing one).

Yeah, the comic thread inspired me. :p

The site looks very interesting, I had a quick flick through it and that's the kind of thing I was looking for, many thanks.

I remember Haley's Comet coming around when I was 5 or so, and wouldn't mind catching some others in the future. I doubt I'm going to be finding any new planets or making first contact, but it's better to spy on the sky and not your neighbours...:shifty:
