As one project ends, so another begins. This is a project to paint a large (I'm guessing about 60 points) Skorne army for a regular client.

Here's a shot of the first Cetrati to give an idea of the colour scheme:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-OdFo2Ncummc/UL9OE2Drq5I/AAAAAAAABKQ/jPw2abjXJfs/s490/20121205_133712.jpg

I'm experimenting a bit with this image: first, as you can see, I'm just taking pics at my desk rather than setting up the lightbox. I've now got two daylight bulbs on my desk itself, so I should be able to get decent pics 24 hours a day. I'm building a much smaller box set up so I can simply lean over, take a pic and post it, when I've got finished minis, but WIPs will show the full glory of the clutter on my desk. I'm also using the camera on my phone, which is actually rather better than the old and battered digital camera I've been using for years. Finally, I'm trying out hosting the images on my personal Google+ account rather than photobucket.

Let me know any problems with hotlinking, and what you think of the quick-and-dirty approach to the WIP pics.

Regards,

Robey

Love Warmahordes plogs on here. The skin tone is fantastic, and I have no issues with the picture.

Nice to see some Skorne love! I've got the starter box and a couple of extra blisters I'm just getting ready to paint up.

Here's a little progress on the Cetrati:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-QlHvE_cv0IE/UMCcSSbvNrI/AAAAAAAABMI/Ez_Vlhy6Ef8/s545/20121206_132311.jpg

The first chap is the unit leader, who also has a back banner that I'm painting separately for obvious reasons. The other one shows what the armour looks like before it gets a wash. The client has agreed with my suggestion that the effect of the black armour will be improved by giving the armour (and just the armour) a gloss finish, but the plan is to do that only once all the minis are finished, based and have a coat of matt varnish, then I'll go back over all of them and do the gloss stuff.

Aiming to have this squad finished early next week and then move on to the beast handlers.

Nearly got the first squad of six done:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kU9Xzw2bvko/UMc42vDONNI/AAAAAAAABVY/vq8ZTG8RSTI/s989/20121211_134439.jpg

Some highlighting to do, then I have to get the details of what the client wants on the bases to mark the arcs of vision, then I have to spray varnish them, then I have to do gloss varnish on all the black armour areas.

OK, so not nearly finished at all. But nearly finished on what I can do without input from the client. ;)

With the Cetrati done pending the client's input, I thought I'd treat myself to a solo before moving on to the Beast Handlers, and picked the Agonizer. This is a fabulous mini - probably my favourite in this whole army. I could see myself getting this just as a random Lovecraftian monstrosity.

This illustrates well the effect I'm going for on the armour. I did rather over-do the colour balance on these pics, though. The red isn't quite that bright.

Here's Molik Karn (sp?) before the varnish goes on (matt varnish all over, then gloss on the black areas of his armour, to give him that laminated look):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/precinctomega/Commissions/Skorne/130118LAI-skorne-molikkarn_zpsb2bd8f23.jpg

I can honestly say that, of all the PP models I've painted to date - which have been a decidedly mixed bag in terms of design, enjoyment and final effect - this is definitely in my top three (and at the top of all the Skorne I've handled so far). And this is strange, because I was initially underwhelmed with the character and the design. But the assembly was easy-peasy and leant itself well to pinning with very little filling. The design is elaborate to a degree that is appropriate to a character warbeast, giving lots of interesting but not onerous details. And I think the final impact of the painted, assembled model is very solid indeed.

I really love your Skorne Agonizer! I think your paint scheme looks much better than the "offical" one. Still "sickly" but not so bleached out.

Cheers! I didn't actually look at the Studio scheme first. I just figured he looked like a poisonous frog and painted him accordingly. Great mini, the Agonizer.

I like the dark take on the Skorne. My favorite is the bronzeback gladiator. Molik Karne is pretty good too.

precinctomega
21-01-2013, 19:20
@mdiscala - Skorne are pretty dark, let's face it. The Nihilators are even more extreme in the whole "self-inflicted pain" thing even than Sisters Repentia. One has to assume that the immune system of elves in the Iron Kingdoms is rather different to that of humans in our universe!

Meanwhile, here's another Basilisk. I think this one is a Drake (I can't, honestly, tell the difference between the Drake and the Crea). This is a fairly early WIP. I've finished about one third of the body and haven't yet started on the base.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/precinctomega/Commissions/Skorne/130121LAI-skorne-drakewip1_zpsb9594ef1.jpg

This is a good mini. It went together fairly well, with some liquid greenstuff to patch up the gaps. The flesh on these guys is mostly really well sculpted and rewards a little time and effort on the highlighting really well. I still prefer the Agonizer (who might, in retrospect, actually be the mini I like better than Molik Karn... it's a tricky call) and I really can't tell the difference between the Crea and the Drake.

Had a good couple of days' painting and, amongst other WIPs, I managed to get both the Drake and the Crea finished:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v77/precinctomega/Commissions/Skorne/130125LAI-skorne-drakecrea_zps8f2f744a.jpg

I've nearly finished the Nihilators, which are pretty good minis notwithstanding what a pain they are to assemble. And I've got a couple of characters still to paint. But the main obstacle to completion are these four Cataphracti Arcuari. Grrr...

I've posted an article on the techniques I've used for painting the flesh on the Skorne guys on my blog:

http://www.precinctomega.co.uk/omegablog/wednesday-round-2

I'm going to try to become more disciplined with this sort of thing, taking WIP photos and suchlike to illustrate techniques of various sorts.

Incidentally, it's hard to know how many people are interested in these painting logs of mine. I tend to think that, because we're a professional service, that people just don't bother to read. Then I go to events and conventions and people come and tell me how much they enjoy these plogs. It's fantastic to get such positive feedback face to face, but do feel free to post thoughts and comments. We are a very long way from being above improvement!

That black and gold color scheme is amazing! And you also did an excellent job on those nihilators' skin. Great work!

precinctomega
07-02-2013, 09:26
The Nihilators were actually - after being a bit of a pain to assemble - a pleasure to paint. The contrasting textures of their skin, robes and limited armour plates is pretty cool. It's just a shame about the deeply, deeply silly blades they have stuck through their skin all over the place. Apparently, in the Iron Kingdoms, there is no such thing as septicaemia.

I really liked these minis a lot more than I expected to. *Their faces are very 'gator-like, obviously, but still display a surprising amount of reptilian character. *I could see myself getting some just to run as primitive alien types for an SF game or even as South Seas Deep Ones or Bayou Mutants.

My client asked if I could lighten the skin, which I was more than happy to do as it meant I could then add some freehand tats to his exposed flesh. I'm really pleased with how this one is turning out. In fact, I rather like this model and may well have to add him to the lengthening list of "models I will buy when my ridiculously extensive backlog is finally eliminated".

Thanks, mdauben! The skin on the Ferox...es?... is one thing I was really pleased with on these. The basing was done by one of my occasional freelancers, but I brought it up to scratch. I really don't enjoy painting most of the Skorne range. The models are simultaneously too intricate yet too awkward. The exception is definitely the cyclopes, which I really enjoyed painting; especially that shaman.

Finished Orin Midwinter at last:

He was a pain to assemble (did he really need to be in three parts? Really?) but painted up really nicely. Quite pleased with how this one turned out.

He looks great! The lightning on the mace looks a"mace"ing! I tried something similar on my Champion guy from the 40k start box.. proved to be rather difficult! You did a great job! I guess the white in the center kind of enhances the effect.

Awful puns, ftw!

I might actually tidy up the glow effect a little. I think I rushed it a bit.

So that's this phase of this project finished. I still have to do two Bronzeback Titans, because I had a freelancers start them for me, but they disappeared in the mail back to me, so first I have to replace them, then I have to paint them. Boo. However, it's good to finish this lot, now.
