Evening all!

I've been a huge fan of the warseer modeling diaries for ages now, however until now I've never done my own plog here. So, I've decided to start a new project and thought it was the perfect time to join the fun!

I love the imagery and fluff surrounding the heresy and the new forgeworld stuff is simply amazing. So, after deciding to do a heresy era army, the choice of which legion was easy. I'm a diehard Imperial fanboy, so that ruled out the traitor chapters strait away. Of the loyalists, i think the Imperial Fists have the coolest fluff, and their heavy siege assault/defense style matches the units I want to field perfectly. Lastly, their colour scheme is completely different from anything I've painted before, so it should be a fun challenge!

Firstly, there are already some fantastic Imperial Fist armies out there that I will be drawing inspiration (i.e. steeling shamelessly :)) from! Kevin Chin's army (featured in white dwarf and the crusade of fire campaign book) and the work of the damned artificer are particularly impressive.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of heavily weathered space marines, but having said that, this army will be themed around a heavy assault/defense force, and will be mid-campaign. As such, the models will need weathering and battle damage, although I'll try not to get to carried away. Also, weathering is heaps of fun!

I'm trying to get the first 1200 points of the army ready for a tournament in late January, so hopefully I can churn out the models at a respectable pace. Also, I've found that photographing yellow models is really tricky, so if anyone has any tips, that would be great!

Anyway, on to the models!

First, the test model for the army. The yellow is a bit orange, which will be fixed for the rest of the army

Test predator. It's missing chapter symbols at the moment, but otherwise done

Techmarine. He'll have a thunderfire cannon (eventually)

The whole army!

And some reinforcements that arrived in the mail a few days ago...

So, I've got a month and a half to get 26 models and 4 tanks assembled, painted and based for the tourney! Fingers crossed!

Ahh welcome to the yellow fold (or the crazy banana marine party, your choice ;) )

For starters thanks for the praise in the introduction, and then right on to the business of it all... It looks awesome! :D

From your test pieces I have complete faith in your skills to pull this off and I will be watching this closely, best of luck and enjoy yourself!

Btw... If you were not aware of it already, new recruits are branded with the chapter badge, so as a senior member of the legion I will have to inform you that an appointment with the hot end of a branding iron have been made for you, compliments of your gene sire and the rest of us from the VIIth ;)

Great to see your work on here Magos, hope the trip from WAU wasn't too painful ;)

These guys look amazing! What paints are you using for the yellows? You have just the right amount of weathering too.

Care to give us a break down of what you got in that box of win?

Cheers guys!

the damned artificer Thanks for the support! Imperial Fists sounds a little more respectable than crazy banana marines, but that's not to say it doesn't have a fun sound to it! And pain is good for the soul (or at least the IF seem to think so), so it's all good!

sheep It's a little different, but should be good!

The test model was done with averland sunset, washed with reikland fleshtone, then gone back over with averland. After that, it was highlighted with a 50/50 mix of averland/yriel (this is mainly to help the yriel cover better), then yriel, then a very light highlight with flashgit yellow. I also painted the test model with a yellow glaze and then a wash of cassandora (?) yellow. However, the wash doesn't work so well on tanks, and it leaves the infantry a little orange, so I don't think I'll do those last steps on the finished models.

And the forgeworld box of awesome is 20 mkIII marines with boarding shields, 10 cataphractii terminators and some etched brass and IF rhino doors, should be fun!

A lovely start for sure!
The Predator looks fantastic and I can't wait to see what's next.
Are you going to weather the black sponsons as well? They look a little clean compared to the yellow.

That's a good point. Originally I left them clean because I thought the guns would be maintained above all else on the tank - but I think you're right, A little weathering would help them blend with the overall look of the tank. I still need to add chapter symbols and a few minor details, so I'll add some more weathering while I'm doing that.

Cheers Memnon! Your Imperial Fists have been one of the big inspirations for the army!

The weathering is all based on techniques from the forgeworld modeling masterclass books. The damage is done with several layers of sponging paint. Firstly, a small amount of flashgit yellow and white mixed together is used to imitate scratches and chips that reflect the light. Most of the damage is then done with a 50/50 mix of scorched earth and chaos black, sponged over the leading edges and areas that are likely to see a lot of wear and tear. Smaller amounts of leadbelcher are sponged on over the top of the brown for the heavier damage. The tank is then sprayed with a gloss varnish and then burnt siena oil paint is washed over the recesses of the model. Finally, I use some dirt and rust weathering powders around the tracks and then it is all sealed with a matt varnish. It sounds complex but its actually a lot easier then it seems. Hope that helps!

I must know your secret to that scorched lascannon barrel. That effect is fantastic and the coppery hue makes for beautiful music when matched with the livery of the Seventh.

Cheers! I'm really pleased with how they turned out. Again, its based on a technique in the modeling masterclass (vol 2). The barrel is painted bleached bone, then sprayed with fuegan orange, bloodletter and macragge blue (? I don't know, whatever the blue glaze is called!) using an airbrush. With each spray, cover less of the barrel to give the graded effect. Finally, wash the whole barrel with seraphim sepia.

Very nice stuff so far. Look forward to seeing more. The predator is particularly good.

Interesting that you are making this as a "present day" marine army, rather than using the legion list. I think I'll probably end up doing the same thing myself, or see if I can somehow make an army that works for either/both.

My plan is to have the army fieldable as both a legion and present day force. I want the army usable in tournaments, so they need to be able to be fielded as a standard marine army, but I love the heresy stuff and definetly want to be able to play in HH campaigns. So, the army will use mostly heresy themed models (especially the infantry) and some units that will only be usable in HH or standard marines to make the army as flexible as possible.

I'd really recommend one, they're great fun!

Cheers! Really appreciate the kind words! I can't wait to get started on the termies, the new forgeworld ones are stunning!

So, managed to get some stuff done! First up I'm assembling some of the forgeworld goodness, 10 mkIII marines with boarding shields. However, I want them to have the Imperial Fist chapter symbol on their shoulder pads, but forgeworld haven't released these for the Imperial Fists mkIII yet. My first solution was to make some green stuff molds of an IF shoulder pad for normal marines and then glue it onto the mkIII shoulder pads.

http://img15.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_124_uc43b.jpg

Unfortunetly, this doesn't work as in practice I just couldn't get the greenstuff symbol to stick onto the shoulder pad without rough looking join marks between the two (they just refuse to sit flush against each other. So, I had to come up with a new plan, and I wasn't keen on the idea of sculpting all the chapter symbols by hand. My solution was to cheat!

In the end I mixed up some green stuff and sculpted circles onto the mkIII shoulder pads. This is really easy as you just get a small blob of green stuff, role it into a ball and place it in the center of the shoulder pad. Then, you just carefully squish it flat and tidy up the edges.

http://img14.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_6b2_uc43b.jpg

Then, get the press mold casts and, when they're dry, carefully cut off the fist symbol. This is easy to do with a sharp hobby blade. Then, squish the symbol into the still-wet green stuff, smooth it up, and there you go!

http://img15.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_e7d_uc43b.jpg

And the shoulder pad on an assembled model

http://img15.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_850_uc43b.jpg

And the first few assembled models. Keeping with the theme of an assault force in combat, I've added a few bullet holes into the shields.

http://img14.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_68b_uc43b.jpg

http://img15.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_288_uc43b.jpg

And the squad's heavy weapon (this is the plasma squad, the next one will be the melter squad)

http://img15.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_768_uc43b.jpg

And because he'd be lonely if he was the only one without a shield...

http://img14.imagefra.me/i5cd/rustymagos/grq5_199_uc43b.jpg

So, a few more guys to assemble and then it's on to the painting!

No real issues with mould lines for me lately, my Cataphractii were fine, only a few minor bubbles/lines except for the side of the torsos where they attach to the frame. A bit of liquid greenstuff and it's fixed in no time, and you can't really see that surface anyway once assembled.

However, since they've been real busy the issue of mis-packed orders has cropped up a bit, and unless you get them on the phone it's been tougher to get it fixed. Emails must be swamped over there.

Cheers! The plan is to have one squad forming a firing line and one squad advancing. I kept these guys simple deliberately, mainly because I haven't worked with resin yet and a nearly have a heart attack every time I think about cutting up amazing forgeworld models! Also, while I love the shields, they do obscure a lot of the model's pose. The next squad will definitely have more variety though.

I found the quality to be excellent. No problems with miscasts or missing parts (yet...). The only problem I had was some of the mold lines were so subtle I only noticed them when I had started painting and putting washes on the models :(

Ok, quick update!

Painting has started! I love the mk III armour, although if you have a choice between mkIII and legion mkIII, get the legion. It has a lot more variety than the normal mkIII. Also, while I think it looks great, it has a heap of detail and is very slow to paint!

First five guys are coming along. Still WIP, and I need to do weathering/bullet holes/squad markings/details, but the basics are mostly done. Not sure what I'm going to do on the shields, but I should probably give some freehand a go. I also need to add some purity seals for a little extra colour (the red of the seal should complement the yellow nicely).

Cheers! Guard are my main army until the Fists are up and running, so I know how much fun it is dropping ordnance on people's heads! Unfortunately getting his with heavy artillery isn't nearly as much fun though, so I'll have to make sure the army has plenty of vindicators so they can give their own back :)

At the moment I'm thinking of using rusted industrial type bases, preferably something that could represent an industrial area of the corridors of a space ship...

I did these guys very similar to how the gw person suggested. White base, averland sunset, wash of reikland fleshtone. I then went back over the models with averland, leaving the recesses, then a few layers of yriel yellow. The yriel doesn't cover overly well, but you can use this to your advantage and build up the highlights with successive coats. I then did a very thin highlight of flashgit, but be VERY sparing with this as it looks washed out and lemony if you use to much. I then used a targeted wash of seraphim to pic out key details, and then gave the whole model a wash of cassandora yellow mixed with water (1 part wash to 4 parts water) to tie all the colours back in to each other. Its a bit time consuming (especially with all the detail on the mkIII armour), but I'm fairly pleased with the results.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, it's a fair bit of work! Trying to find a way to speed it up a bit, but not sure. Good luck!

I really like the yellow tone of the armour - very nice indeed. How easy did you find it mating the boarding shields with the mk3 models?

Cheers! It's a little tricky getting the mk3 to work with the shields. Most need a little trimming either around the shoulder or the wrist to make the guns line up on the shields properly, but I think they look pretty cool when they're done!

So, Christmas has been pretty crazy but great fun!
I even managed to get a bit of painting done. The first tactical squad is pretty much finished, except for the tactical markings/squad numbering and maybe a bit of work on the writing.

Definitely! I've got 10 cataphractii termies waiting for some attention, and it wouldn't surprise me if I get another 10 after that. I've also got a set of space hulk terminators that I think would look good in yellow...

So, the original plan was to get these guys ready for a tourney in the end of Jan, which I'm now very confident won't happen :(
As a result, progress on the IF will have to slow for a few weeks while I update my admech for the tourney, and I also need to quickly paint up a BFG fleet for a campaign we're kicking off in mid jan. Fear not though, the IF will see plenty of work whenever I can spare a few minutes

Hopefully more updates soon!

Hey all!

Sorry I haven't been updating much, but been distracted getting another army ready for a tourney and painting up a BFG fleet for a campaign. Also, my computer died on me and took most of my wip pics with it, making updating tricky!

But, I've still manged to get a bit done. First up I've assembled the second tactical/breaching squad and got a fair bit of the way through painting them. They're still very wip and need a lot of work, in particular weathering their armour, but most of the basics are done.

http://img15.imagefra.me/i52f/rustymagos/grq5_4a8_uc43b.jpg

Also just noticed that the guy on the left arm's hanging off a bit, so definitely need to fix that!

http://img15.imagefra.me/i52f/rustymagos/grq5_5e8_uc43b.jpg

So, I'm heading away for the next week and I'll only have basic painting stuff with me, so I decided to assemble these guys to work on in the evenings. Still very wip at the moment. So far they've only had a base coat of averland and a wash of reikland.

http://img14.imagefra.me/i52f/rustymagos/grq5_a95_uc43b.jpg

These two are a little further along, and I've gone back over the wash with averland - not that you can really tell with the terrible photo...

Super excited about these guys (I have five more, and fifteen on their way from forgeworld :)). I'm trying not to get to distracted from the breaching squad, but after seeing Gearhart's work on his own cataphractii, I can't wait to have a go myself!

Hopefully more updates soon

I've been doing a bit more work on the cataphractii and thought I'd take some progress shots to show how I do the yellow. I'm away working at the moment and my camera/lighting is pretty terrible, so sorry for the bad photos. Hopefully you can still get some idea though...

This is actually step 3, but the steps before are pretty boring. It's simply undercoat white, paint the whole model with averland sunset, then wash the whole model with reikland fleshtone (see previous post). After that, go back over the model with averland, leaving the recesses (see below)
http://img14.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_9ae_uc43b.jpg

Next highlight the model using a watered down yriel yellow. The yriel won't go on very well, even over the averland. So, by watering it down you can then do several thin coats, building the yellow up
http://img14.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_5f8_uc43b.jpg

With each successive coat of yriel, use the colour as if you're highlighting the layer below, strengthening the colour as you move away from the recesses. I find 2 to 4 coats (2 on the smaller sections, 4 on the larger surfaces where you want a good colour gradient) should work well. This is the slowest section, but its pretty quick after this
http://img15.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_5f0_uc43b.jpg

Comparison shot of the first coat of yriel and the last
http://img15.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_5d8_uc43b.jpg

Highlight with flash gitz yellow, but do it sparingly. Flash gitz is a very light, lemony yellow and to much will take away from the richness of the yriel
http://img14.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_bb7_uc43b.jpg

Then give the whole model a wash with watered down cassendora yellow (1 part yellow, 4 parts water). This ties in all the colours and adds to the richness
http://img15.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_b23_uc43b.jpg

And the progression through the stages
http://img15.imagefra.me/i52h/rustymagos/grq5_170_uc43b.jpg

A bit more contrast is added when I do the weathering, but that's basically it

Hope that's useful!

Cheers Gearhart! I just got a shinny new box of forgeworld in the mail yesterday, which brings my total up to 25 cataphractii
Not quite as impressive as your collection but I think it's a good start! The plan is to have 10 shooty termies, 10 assault (5 lightning claw, 5 thunder hammer/storm shield) and then some characters. I'll probably add to this later but it will do for now.

Glad you like the boarding marines! They're a bit tricky to put together but I'd totally recommend getting some!

Cheers! At the moment the plan is to give the sergeant a different coloured helmet, as well as his little shoulder shield thingy.

I admit these guys were a little rushed putting together, so I'll probably go back over them later and add in some more detail. I know its a horrible way to work, but I was really excited about painting them! I'm still trying to figure out how to do their chapter symbol, because the shoulder pads are all to small for most of the standard sized chapter symbol transfers/molds, but they look to big for the really small ones. I'm sure I'll figure something out though...

Good start indeed! What kind of characters were you thinking? Also you should take a group shot of them all built up. Once its there in front of you, you will slowly start to fell you grin larger and larger until it runs off your face.....At least that happened to me lol and once i get a few 20 marine squads i will certainly get some boarding marines! :) Hit a snag on my cataphractii though. I found out i was using the wrong paint..... lol so once i get the yellow exactly how i want it i may not be able to paint as i like lol Im currently doing 3 test minis.

Sorry to hear you were using the wrong paint, that sucks! The models you had were looking great as well, but I'm sure the new ones will be even better. At the moment I'm planing on having a chaplain and a praetor in cataphractii armour, as well as a heresy version of Lysander. And definetly can't wait to get them all assembled and on the table!

Most impressive! How do you do the battle-damage? Sponge in two colours? Sponge and brush?

Cheers! The paint chips are done by sponging on a 50/50 mix of black and scorched brown, and then once that's done I brush paint on the metalic chips over the largest blotches of black/brown. After that I give the lower half of the model a dusting of aged rust weathering powder from FW

Hope that helps!

Th chaplain conversion is very well done. I like how you've put the backpack vent part on and the green stuff Collar is top notch. Will you be removing the two imperial eagles from the model? I remember when I converted mine who is now long gone that I replaced the eagle on the chain with a small Templar symbol. You could easily do something similar with the brass etch kit.

Keep it up!

Ooh you monster, you beat me to that Chaplain conversion! I was looking at doing the backpack trick on him too. I have all the parts and mine is just waiting for a break in the painting schedule. Seriously man, this is like straight out of my head, the only difference being the Iron Halo (I think I used mine on a conversion already) and chapter badges. Mine's even metal, so the material is the same. Creepy

Cheers Shaw! I'm actually planning on leaving the aquilas, as I like how they look. From what I've seen and read, the aquilas were still used pre-heresy, but as a (less common) mark of valor etc. The forgeworld mk4 commander even has one on his chest. I figure the chaplain must have earned it as he bellowed the Imperial Truth across half the galaxy! I love your idea of the templar symbol on the chain though

Been working on a new squad of veterans. In-game they will count as either sternguard for 40K, or a veteran tactical squad (or maybe a seeker squad) for 30k. These guys have been a bit slower than I thought, but should be ready for some paint soon. They all have (or will all have) magnetized weapons so they can swap out their bolters for the inevitable sternguard combi weapons

Cheers mate! I'm loving these Guys! I started my own chapter after seeing Kevin Chins guys in the Crusade of Fire, especially the boarding squad. Though I am using them as Siege Squads from IA volume 10, equipped with Mantlet shields so they reroll failed armor saves. But they are awesome!

Cheers, glad you like them! And yeah, I love Kevin Chin's army, and they are a huge inspiration for me.

Can't wait, and I'm sure whatever you do will be great

Really, really nice work as usual. How did you do the 'burned' effect on the end of the multi meltas?

Thanks! The heat effect is really easy. First, paint the barrel of the gun ironbreaker. Then, the effect is just done with bands of washes. First I did seraphim sepia furthest away from the nossel, then baal red, leviathan purple, and finally nuln oil, each progressively closer to the nossel. Keep the bands separate, with just a little overlap to blend the colours. Hope that helps!

So, sorry for the lack of updates, I have nothing to blame except laziness. However, I have managed to get some work done! The sternguard/veteran tac squad are now mostly done. They still need the sergeant's power sword, weathering, and basing, but most of the basics are done. Some of the shoulder pads are also waiting for some etched brass from forgeworld before I can finish them. All the bolters are magnetized, so I can swap weapons out for other options (like heaps of combi weapons for sternguard )

Thanks, and yeah, I think your right about the waist. I've gone back over the model and added in a small pouch on the waist, which hopefully should hide the difference a bit

Glad you like them! And yes, I figure as soon as I've got bases for the termies/sternguard I'll organize some group shots :)

Sorry Gearhart, missed your post! I think it may have gone up while I was typing the above reply!
Cheers for the encouragement, and I think I have about 37 models with some paint on them (20 boarding marines, 10 sternguard, 5 termies, the techmarine, predator, and the chappy's getting close :) )
As soon as the sternguard are weathered and they and the terminators are based I'll do some army shots!

We'll say it's good luck, because its better than bad luck! Curious to see what you've got, but it sounds exciting!

Not sure how many unpainted models I've got for this army, but quiet a few. I've been slowly collecting stuff for this force as I painted up older armies, so I've got quiet a backlog of models (about 2 80 liter tubs). I also work in a hobby shop, which doesn't help my addiction at all

From forgeworld, I've got about 15 more cataphractii, a few mkIIIs and IVs, apothecaries, a contemptor, mkIV commander and plenty of vehicle doors, but planning on getting a lot more stuff. From GW, a marine megaforce, couple of tactical squads (with components to make them look preheresy), land raiders, predators, vindicators, razorbacks, drop pods, dreads, not quiet sure, but a lot

So, little bit more progress.
Chaplains mostly done, just need to give him some subtle weathering and get him on a proper base. The yellow of the pauldron shield is a little stark, but it looks better when he's standing with the other termies (which I figure he'll be doing most of the time anyway...)

Wow, very sharp looking conversions. And the painted Chappy turned out great, too. The only thing I'm not sold on is the icon on his back; bird on bird action. If you have any of the banner tops from Forgeworld (circle with wreath around it) that would be ideal IMO. You could stick etched brass symbols inside the circle easily enough.

Of course I'm going to end up staring at my Calgar bitz now when I should be painting tonight ;)

Thanks Jericho! I'm slightly hesitent about the eagle over eagle as well, but I think I'm going to withhold judgement until he's got some paint on him (it will be easy to change if I don't like it). Thanks Idomeneus! The Forgeworld is a bit pricey, although over here in Australia the regular GW stuff is so expensive that forgeworld is relatively cost effective (you can order a landraider from forgeworld cheaper than you can get in a GW retail store here).

The weathering is actually quite easy. The chipping is done using a 50/50 mix of scorched brown and abbadon black, sponged onto the model (I use old foam from pluck-tray foam miniture carry trays). I focusing on ridges on the armour where it would naturally see a lot of wear and tear. After the initial chipping, I paint leadbelcher over the largest of the chips, trying to leave some of the black/browne visible beneath. Then, I just dust on some forgeworld aged rust weathering powder (I brush it on dry using an old brush, straight from the container). I try and use it vary sparingly and only on the lower halves of the model, as if they've been running through dusty/rusty areas. Also, the slightly darker bottom half of the model hopefully acts to frame the attention on the top half of the model, which is where you want it. After this, just seal the model with a matt varnish and you're done!

I find the biggest thing I struggle with when weathering is trying not to get too carried away. It's really easy to get caught up weathering (its a lot of fun!), but end up leaving the models looking like they've just been driven over by an entire IG tank company. While this can look fantastic in the right circumstances and for the right army, for these guys I'm trying to stick to the theory that less is more. Hope that helps!

Really nice conversion!

Sorry all, it's been a lot longer between updates then I intended!
The army is still moving along, although slower than I would like. But, progress has been made.

Biggest progress has been on some more cataphractii to put the squad up to ten. These guys are still wip, but getting there, almost ready for weathering. The shields on the shoulderpads were an experiment, although I think I like them. Unfortunately this means I'll need to get some more shields to do the rest of the squad...

http://img15.imagefra.me/i56g/rustymagos/grq4_81b_uc43b.jpg

Two heavy flamers for the squad, so it can be split in to two squads of 5
http://img10.imagefra.me/i56g/rustymagos/grq4_433_uc43b.jpg

And because I figure I'll be playing 40k more than 30k, I've also added some 40k firepower
http://img15.imagefra.me/i56g/rustymagos/grq4_c86_uc43b.jpg

And the full group of new recruits
http://img10.imagefra.me/i56g/rustymagos/grq4_7e0_uc43b.jpg

So, these guys are nearly finished, but they may have to wait a little while until their fully done, because I've got a distraction...

It was my birthday last week and a bunch of friends and family chipped in and got me this

http://img10.imagefra.me/i56g/rustymagos/grq4_928_uc43b.jpg

Needless to say, I'm very excited!

Now I need to figure out what legio to paint it as. At the moment I'm torn between legio Ignatum (fire wasps) and legio crucius (warmongers). I like the crucius colour scheme better, but the fluff for ignatum fits with the army much better. So, any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers guys! Yeah, I was quite happy with how the cyclones looked in the end. I think the solid, implacable look of the cataphractii works well as a missile platform. And they fitted on nicely, which is always a bonus!

Thanks Saardis! war griffons would look good with the IF now you mention it. I think the fire wasps are pulling away as the favored choice though. The thought of the fists standing side by side with Legio Ignatum as they prepare to defend the Imperial Palace is just to cool not to do!

Nice work! And congrats on the warhound! :)

Yeah, have to agree. I love the fluff in particular, so now I just have to figure out the specifics of how I'm going to paint it. Should be fun!

Thanks Chillwind! I'm really happy with how the yellow is turning out, although it's still very painful at times... All the models go though what I like to call the 'throw it out the window stage', which usually happens about halfway through the yriel. Still, much easier with the new paints, I don't think I would have been willing to go through trying it with the older ones!

Progress!

Ok, so it's a bit of a silly statement, but titans are big! Who knew, right? :p

This is a fantastic kit, and I'm amazed by the detail and quality of the model. No miscasts yet and only a few mold lines and what not.

So after several hours assembling and much blue tac, I now have a shinny pair of chicken legs!

I do. The admech were the army I was working on before I started the IF. Unfortunately they don't have an army diary for warseer, but they do on another forum. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post links, and I appologize if I'm not, but the diary can be found here:
http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=99695

In case I shouldn't post the link, here are some of the final army shots (not that the army is actually finished...)

Some of the army's heavy support
http://img14.imagefra.me/i52d/rustymagos/grq5_56e_uc43b.jpg

As I'm sure some of you can tell this army was hugely inspired by the work of warseer's very own The Hoff.

My IF are designed to be interchangeable with this army, including having very similar bases. When I started on the admech none of the HH stuff had been announced, and it was designed to be a 40k guard army. I'm really excited that the admech are getting more and more attention in the HH books, with strong rumors of a full list in the next book or two. As such, I will be updating and modifying my admech to work with the HH as allies for the IF (and vice versa). I can't wait for forgeworld to eventually cover the civil war on mars and the intervention of the IF! In the mean time, I will definitely be having some admech allies for the IF, and I've already got some thallax cohort on the way!

I got the technique from the damned artificer, he did a great tutorial here: http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?302112-Banish-the-daemon!!-Grey-Knights

Basically I did the same thing, just changed the colours. I used blazing orange, mephiston red and abadon black, although in future I think I'd use yriel yellow instead of the blazing orange to get a stronger contrast between the colours. Hope that helps!

Awesome admech army. Loving the vibrant red against all the ancient looking metals.

Cheers Chillwind!

So, been a little slow going, but have managed to get a bit more on the titan done. Firstly, the interior is now pretty much done.

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_9a8_uc43b.jpg

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_69d_uc43b.jpg

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_eed_uc43b.jpg

http://img15.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_f3a_uc43b.jpg

With the interior finished it was time to break out the airbrush and start making some progress on the rest of the model. I've settled on legio Ignatum for the scheme, so red with back and yellow hazard stripes here we come! I've decided I want the bulk of the armour to be red, with the hazard stripes adding contrast. I want a really rich red and so I've decided to use the technique forgeworld used in their second modelling masterclass book to paint their chaos reaver titan. So, the first step is to airbrush on some ceramite white over a chaos black undercoat on all the armour plates destined to be red. Like forgeworld suggest, I've tried to keep a mottled pattern on the larger sections of armour to try and add some interest in otherwise large, flat sections of colour.

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_795_uc43b.jpg

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_06f_uc43b.jpg

http://img15.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_f50_uc43b.jpg

The next step was to spray on several coats of tamiya clear red. I was really happy with how this turned out, and a matt varnish should take most of the shine off it.

http://img10.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_689_uc43b.jpg

Also managed to get most of the yellow and hazard stripes done. The hazard stripes were done in the standard way, although I did the black first, and then added the yellow stripes after that. I did it this way because I thought the yellow would be easier to patch. It was a good thing too, because the masking tape I used peeled a lot of the paint beneath off, despite being low adhesive. Very annoying.

http://img15.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_d1b_uc43b.jpg

And got the head done as well. I used Tamiya flat yellow for this, and was very impressed. I had no problems with the tamiya paints through the airbrush, but often struggle with the games workshop ones (even when I thin them)

http://img15.imagefra.me/i57d/rustymagos/grq4_650_uc43b.jpg

So, managed to get all the armour sections airbrushed, so hoping it should come together fairly quickly now. At least I hope so, because I have an apoc game in a weeks time that I want it ready for, fingers crossed!

Well, after a monster few days of painting I've got the titan pretty much done, and just in time for its first apoc game! There are still a few details that I need to finish off, including some weathering, but that can wait for now.

http://img15.imagefra.me/i57k/rustymagos/grq4_9d9_uc43b.jpg

Still not positive about its name, but at the moment I'm going with Sanguinem Venator. The apoc game was fantastic fun, and the warhound absolutely dominated. It managed to kill over 30 necron warriors and ten plague marines, plus scored its first super heavy kill when its turbo laser annihilated a chaos baneblade in a single shot. It even managed to survive taking an orbital bombardment to the face. It was a great game and a big thanks to all my opponents! I'll try and post a few pics of the battle tomorrow.

War hound looks great! The red looks lovely and deep/rich and the hazard stripes are crisp. Only thing I could recommend to finish it off would be some dust/weathering on the lower legs, but depends on whether you want to maintain the clean look.

Either way, great stuff.

Glad you like the titan. I'm still not sure if I should weather the titan or not, and I've been getting a lot of conflicting opinions! Origianlly I was strongly in favour of weathering it, but now I'm starting to like the gloss finish. I think I might go somewhere in between, and just do some light weathering around the feet.

In the mean time, just to show I haven't completly forgotten about the fists, I've managed to get the mkIV tac squad mostly finished, except for the bases.

Cheers JackDaw! (and sorry for slow responce!) I was never much of a fan of the stormtalon, but love the darktalon model. I've always wanted to try and convert a marine version and I'm pretty happy with how its turned out so far

Well, I've started airbrushing the tanks and decided to try some of the weathering techniques in the forgeworld modeling masterclass books. In particular, I'm going to try the technique of using hairspray to chip paint. I'm going to be doing it on the vindicator siege shields, because I want them looking well weathered.
The first step was to paint up the dozer blade, first warplock bronze, leadbelcher, mithril silver, and then some airbrushes washed with drakenhoff nightshade and leviathan purple (not that you can see any of that in the photo)
http://img10.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_6da_uc43b.jpg

Next step was to protect the areas I didn't want painted with tape, and then spray the rest of the area with several thin coats of hairspray.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_d25_uc43b.jpg

Once the hairspray was dry, I airbrushed the dozerblade with tamiya yellow (which I've decided to use on the rest of the tanks because it's easier to airbrush than the GW paints)
http://img10.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_9f7_uc43b.jpg

Next step is to use a brush dipped in warm water and gently rub it over the areas you want the paint chipped. The theory is the warm water dissolves the hairspray, and it takes the paint above with it.
http://img10.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_c1d_uc43b.jpg

It's working!
http://img10.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_366_uc43b.jpg

I ended up taking a lot of paint off, as I want the dozers heavily weathered. Once you're happy with how much paint you've taken off, the last step is to seal the whole area with matt varnish.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i585/rustymagos/grq4_03f_uc43b.jpg

The next step will be to go over the dozer with some washes and weathering powders, but I'm happy with this as a base for more work to come

Cheers guys!

So It turns out I completely forgot to mention you need to seal the area with matt varnish once your done chipping the hairspray to stop it from continuing to flake off. The above post has been edited to fix!

Although, I always feel nervous working on an army when I'm not sure what the new rules are going to be, but fingers crossed!

Done a bit of work on what I'm calling the 'seraphim' pattern storm talon. All the air brushing is done now, so it just needs the rest of the weathering done on it.

http://img10.imagefra.me/i58a/rustymagos/grq4_d27_uc43b.jpg

I've also changed the colours I'm using on the tanks, using the tamiya flat yellow because it's really easy to airbrush. Knocked this rhino out really quickly just to make sure the colour matches what's already been done. Fairly happy with the match, so now it's all ahead full on the rest of the tanks

Hey guys

Away with work at the moment, so work on the vehicles has paused until I'm back. But in the mean time I'm having a play around with these guys. I know storm shields aren't heresy era, but I can't have an Imperial Fist army without some TH/SS terminators in there somewhere. This way, they should also still match the rest of the cataphractii terminators and the army as a whole.

Basically they're just cataphractii terminators with regular assault termy thunder hammers and deathwing storm shields that I've filed all of the detail from. Quite happy with how all the bits went together. These guys are about two steps into the yellow process

After you so kindly gave support on my starting fists blog I thought I would drop by.

Oh how I wish I hadn't, your work is fantastic and well now I'm praying to god I can get a nice yellow that has beautiful brush work as my airbrush is waiting on eBay sales to be able to purchase it.

Your work is not only an inspiration but an aspiration too.

I shall return to my station of yellow and see what happens.

Well it's been a little while between posts!

A new codex has come out in the meantime, which means lots of extra stuff to put in the army. I've also entered a 2,000 point tournament next weekend, which means I need a playable force up and running by then. I think I should be able to have everything ready, as it's mostly weathering tanks and basing some models, although I do need to assemble and paint a handful of models and a rhino. This could be a long week...

In the mean time, here are a couple of things I've been working on. First up is the land raider redeemer

And lastly, the terminator assault squad, still wip

Cheers guys! Always appreciate the support!

The weathering of tanks continues, this time working on the two vindicators. While I was weathering I thought I'd take a few pictures and do a step-by-step.

I start with a 'factory fresh' tank.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_3bd_uc43b.jpg

I start the weathering by sponging on a 50/50 mix of scorched brown and abbadon black. Focus on the edges of the panels, and the areas that would naturally be exposed to wear and tear. Chipping along the edges of the panels also helps define the different segments of armour.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_4d6_uc43b.jpg

Fully chipped
http://img15.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_bec_uc43b.jpg

Next I sponged on a mix of flashgitz yellow and ceramite white. This is supposed to represent areas were the hull has been damaged which cause it to reflect light differently. Here I more focus on the middle of panels, and on lower sections of the hull.
http://img10.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_4e5_uc43b.jpg

On these tanks I'm using a large amount of soot and carbon around the exhausts. This is partly because I like the look, and partly because I want the tanks to have some black on them to match the rest of the army. I figure soot is a good way to do this. I'll go over this with weathering powders later, but for the mean time I've just stippled on some abaddon black over the exhausts.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_80b_uc43b.jpg

Next step is to spray the tank with a gloss varnish. Then I add a layer of weathering using burnt umber oil paint. Oil paints are great because they're really easy to go back over and continue working the paints, even after a long period of time. You can also apply the paint, and then remove parts of it using white spirits. This is how I apply the streaks of wear around the rivets. I also use paint mixed with a lot of white spirits and use this around the recesses of the armour. The gloss varnish allows this to spread really easily along the groves.
http://img10.imagefra.me/i59g/rustymagos/grq4_e9d_uc43b.jpg

Final step is the weathering powders. I mainly use forgeworld fresh and aged rust, as well as black soot. I wait until the oil paints are completely dry, then dust the weathering powders on using a dry brush. You can also mix them with white spirits in a paste/paint-like mix, which will give a different effect. I dust the rust powders on the lower edges of the tank, using more of the fresh rust then the aged rust. Finally, I used the black soot over the exhausts. I also applied a wash of rust and dirt coloured powders, mixed with white spirits, over the tank tracks. Once all of this is dry, spray the model with a matt varnish to seal the powders and oil paints, and take away the sheen of the gloss varnish. And there you have it, all done!

Cheers shaw!

I've never actually fielded vindicators yet, so not quiet sure. I've come up against them several times however and they seem to be very effective, especially for their points cost. For most of my games I'll be using standard 40k rules, however I'd love to have a few games using the legion rules as well, especially after I get some of the newer additions into the army. I'll do an army shot as soon as I've finished the last few models I'm working on for the tourney, so hopefully end of the week! Once the dust has settled on the tourney, I'll be gearing this army up for the new codex and some of the new options. Imperial Fist devastators are going to be fantastic, so a squad or two of them will be high on the list!

Work continues at a frantic pace! More weathering work on the remaining vehicles mostly.

First up, the Imperial Fists now have a bit of air support. Finished some light weathering on the stormtalon, which makes it pretty much done.

And lastly, the final rhino I'll need for the tournement. This one will be used with one of the breaching squads, so I wanted it looking a bit tougher than the standard ones.

The storm talon is based on the darktalon/nephalim, and I didn't have to change much at all. Most of the conversion work was changing the weapon loadout, which was fairly easy. After that it was just a matter of filing off all the ravenwing symbols. And yeah, the gun shield is just taken from the landraider kit, nice and easy!

Had a day off today, so managed to get most of the final bits and pieces for the army ready for the tournament.

It wasn't quite that bad! The termies and the extra guys were already painted, they just needed weathering and basing. And airbrushes make painting tanks a lot faster!

So, set out the Imperial Fists and managed to get a few photos. Unfortunately most of them aren't very good, but enough get the point. This is the first section of the army finished, and I'm now trying to figure out what to do next. The new codex has added some fantastic stuff and new potential play styles, which has got me thinking about where to go after the Imperial Fists. I will obviously need to add a few more units to this army, and I have some devastators, a spartan, a typhon, and a few more tanks all to add in. But after that I'm trying to figure out if I should keep going with this army, or maybe try my hands at some white scars or night lords. I guess I'll have to wait and see. Well, the tournament is done and dusted, and I had a great time. It was really satisfying to see the army on the table, and had 5 fantastic games against some fantastic opponents. As is traditional for my armies, they lost their first game, but managed to win three over the course of the weekend. Hey all

Well, the first stage of the Imperial Fists are finished and on the table, which means it's on to stage 2 of the army. There's some great stuff in the new marine codex, and I've been working on a list of additions I want to make to the army. At the moment it's looking like quite a long list.
At the moment the list includes but is not limited to:

Devastator squad with plasma cannons
Devastator squad with lascannons
options for a devastator squad with heavy bolters
additional mkIII tactical squad
Centurion squad
additional HQ options
Spartan assault tank
Typhon siege tank
Stormeagle gunship
Rhino
Drop pods
contemptor dreadnaught

I'm sure there's more, but that should do for now :D

On the up side, I've made a start on the list, beginning with assembling the plasma devastator squad

Firstly I apologize for it being so long between updates. A combination of lots of work, a faulty camera and general laziness on my part are mostly to blame...
However, work has still been progressing on the imperial fists. At the moment I've got pics of the second devastator squad in the assembly stage.

The second half of the squad. The sergeant here was originally going to lead the squad, however I changed my mind because I doubt he will ever use the powerfist. It was mainly there because I thought the pose looked good, however I swapped him out in case people have a problem with models not equipped as they are in game.

Thanks shaw!

I have to admit it is very satisfying to see an army on the tabletop. Glad you like the devastators, and besides, any excuse to get more mkIII into the army!

And as for the idea of more spartans, all I can say is 'don't tempt me frodo!'

These continue to look lovely. I'm not the biggest fan of the Heresy-era heavy weapons, but your squad is one of a few that I've seen recently that's helping to talk me round - they look nicer with paint on them! I particularly like the Sergeant in the lascannon-toting squad - using the tank crewman is a great call!

Thanks Tybalt! Glad they've come up well!

Glorious. Seeing a game with beautiful imperial fists always makes me happy.

Did you ever consider adding some small sacred writings (free hands) and purity seals over the hull of your land raiders and rhinos or do you prefer a very clean and austere and functional aesthetic ?

Cheers vlad78!

I have thought about adding texts and some free hand around the tanks, but haven't decided on it just yet. The biggest reason the current vehicles don't have scripture and free hand is I was trying to get them ready for a tournament and didn't really have time to add it on! Since then I've been focusing on the new additions to the army and haven't gone back to the tanks yet. As for adding it on, I'm not really not sure. I wanted the army to have a battle worn, mid-campaign feel, as though they're in the middle of a major siege/assault. I'm not sure if adding lots of scripture will help that theme or not. Really I'm open to suggestions!

Cheers Breazer! Not to worry about the sergeant. I'm planning on adding in a couple of mkIII tactical squads to the army and he will be assigned to one of those. Hopefully the power fist will come in more handy there!

Hey all.

Time for a quick update. Progress is slow because of work, but still chipping away. I've managed to finish the second devastator squad, this one equipped for anti-tank work. This squad is a minor celebration, as it brings the Imperial Fists battle company to half strength! (not including command squad, dreadnoughts or transports, but still, it's a start!)

Quick update.

Got a squad of centurion devs for the Imperial Fists. I'm still not sure if I like the models, but rules sound like they should be pretty useful. Did a few simple conversions on them, but nothing to carried away.

Delighted to see that you've used those Mark II or III heads on the Centurions - it's exactly what I hoped to do with my own, when I get around to them, and you've convinced me it's the way forward. Lovely stuff.

Much better with these heads and also like the guns on the shoulder idea.
Imo much better then on the hands!

Glad you like the spin on the centurions, and especially the mkIII heads. I never liked the ones with the models, to comic/angry looking

Well, once again I've been incredibly slack with my updates, apologies to all.

Also, it is with no small amount of horror that I realize I have a major tournament in about a week and a half, and I have a heap of stuff I still need to get done. Top of the list is a new captain and a command squad. I also need to paint up some tanks and hopefully get a display base ready as well. At least there's no rush...

Fortunately the captain and the command squad have got some paint on them (the yellow is mostly done), but still heaps to do!

Thanks all for your kind words! Glad the captain was well received, the conversion happened quite by accident as I was just rummaging through my bits box looking for random parts and happened to have the two next to each other.

Well, only 3 days left until the tourney, so I think it's officially time to panic now. The command squad has more paint on them, but still not finished yet and no pics. But, I got basic scheme done on the tanks so now they're ready for weathering.

http://img15.imagefra.me/i51s/rustymagos/grq4_3d2_uc43b.jpg

And, in a classic case of jumping onto a side project when I should be finishing other stuff, I started to put a new display board together for the army.
http://img15.imagefra.me/i51s/rustymagos/grq4_07c_uc43b.jpg

And got a base coat of paint on it
http://img15.imagefra.me/i51s/rustymagos/grq4_81e_uc43b.jpg

Tomorrow I'll go over it with the airbrush and some weathering powders and try and get a little life into it. With any luck I might get the tanks weathered as well.

Cheers guys

I like the rubble piles, but feel you need more of them, and blend them into areas that are damaged realistically.... look at some of the dioramas FW use in their books for HH
An example would be around the destroyed eagle insignia, its too isolated to make sense; did it fall off a building? is it imploded up from the ground beneath somehow? But working towards a deadline I can understand the urgency.

Aside from that I like the neat cuts and layout of the whole piece, not to mention your astounding army itself; That rhino is so much more with those added components (especially the gunner shield like in the newest picture!) Good luck at the Tourny!

How long do you have to work on it? it looks good but it needs a little humanisation to it to make it pop. if its a temple/ shrine/ imperial palace maybe a few burnt out trees, benches, prayer papers/collection box and a toppled statue like you would get in a plaza/square near most religious building's. if it is industrial normal pipes, burnt out heavy machinery and detritus of industry. if its residential do burnt out stalls, drains and street furniture and for a lived in feel get some rubbish, graffiti, propaganda poster's and drop a teddy bear some where in homage to the repeated scene where in the panicked evac a child drops good old Mr Cuddle's

Cheers dugaal. This is the first piece of terrain I've made in a very long time, and unfortunately the time restrictions mean I haven't been able to go into as much detail as I would otherwise like. The lack of rubble is more so I've got lots of flat areas to display models on. The tourney is only 1350 points but I'd like to be able to use the board for larger armies. Because of this, I've tried to keep areas free of fixed detail so they have flat surfaces, and then fill the detail in with bits of removable terrain. I'll definetly check out the forgeworld stuff for more inspiration though!

Looking great mate!

Thanks Asdrubael, really appreciate it!

Unfortunately I've only got a couple more days, of which I also need to get other stuff done. This means I've only been able to give it some fairly basic detail. Overall it will be mainly a defensive position, and so more deffensive structures will be added in (and kept removalbe for ease of storage/reuse on other things). Thanks for the feedback though, you've got some great ideas there!

Well, managed to get a bit more done on the display base. Basically attacked it with my airbrush and weathering powders to try and get a bit of life into it. Also worked on some of the other bits and pieces that will go with it. Still a bit to do, especially detailing and painting the gateway, but starting to think I should get it done in time. In the shot the wall is just resting against the base, so hopefully shouldn't be the gap when its finished (fingers crossed!)

the display board looks great... might recommend you put some more gravel and sand texture around the shattered Aquila, to stop it looking like a molded piece of plastic glued down. But very nice work.
