View Full Version : Ed's Heresy Project Log

19-12-2012, 02:53
Im building a decent sized heresy marine force and decided to put all that into one log. Im a little undecided on the legion yet however I really like the Raven Guard. here is my random plog, http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?229284-Ed-s-Thread i will still continue to post to it just not anything heresy era related as that will be here. im mostly going to just post pics, possibly an occasional question. if theres anything you want to see more of, let me know. and thanks for looking :)

I love this already. You seem to have a swarm. Interested to the see the Raven Guard colour scheme :D

That's a lot of painting you've got there on some stunning models!

The second guy in on the 2nd and 3rd picture, is that a legally sized base? (sorry to be anal but some tournaments get really annoying about a few mm here and there.

this is from my other post but its more fitting here; some bolter conversions. the one on the bottom is the original RTBO1 bolter, note its nearly identical to the current FW version with the mag moved forward.

yay for the mail! legion stuff has arrived! now just waiting for cataphractii squads and contemptors!

24-12-2012, 03:43
everything cleaned and in the bits box. this order was interesting, I noted way more flash than usual; broken parts, air pockets, mould lines that I cant really get rid of...typical of finecast but atypical from what Ive had in the past from FW. possibly ramped up production to keep up with holiday sales and HH success?...not to make excuses for GW/FW, but...

Spot on. They have been getting a way higher influx of orders then normal. Honestly, in my experience, anytime I have had a problem with a cast, be it a miscast, not a full cast or anything else, I just call FW and let them know. Sometimes they want pictures, other times not, but they do always ask for the batch number. After that they will replace anything that did have the problems.

On the note of your log, I love where its headed and cant wait to see more! Subbed!

there were two bases in that micro art kit that were half a millimeter smaller than the others. i could always exclude them from tourney play. i picked up a ton of paint today, i really want to see the raven guard in the next HH FW book, ide like to do some by the book alternate colour scheme like those given for the legions in betrayal. i may split this force up and do some luna wolves and death guard or something just to start painting.

i need to get some opinions, im making a mkIII captain with lightning claws and i dont know which set of claws to use. i have these two but maybe theres a better idea out there. i will use mkIII shoulder pads when i make my choice.

chaos raptor claws (if used theyd be de-chaos'd)

and the terminator punch knives held by power fists (not my favorite...)

01-01-2013, 02:41
The raptor ones I think. They do need to be a bit less chaos, but maybe not all that much is really necessary. They are much cooler than the imperial ones for sure.

01-01-2013, 04:44
The raptor claws look good. I also gave this blog a 5 star vote and honestly it seems messed up anyone would vote it lower then a 4. Jealousy I guess!

01-01-2013, 05:53
haha thanks for the input, i will clean up those raptor claws and have a go with them. what would people like to see me do with this thread to make it more interesting? stars are always good :) happy 2013 btw

01-01-2013, 11:32
Yeah, the Raptor claws work best for me, have you thought about getting the ones FW do?

It'd be good to see some paint appearing on these soon :D

01-01-2013, 23:05
here are the two examples given on the FW website. i used a set of the old metal terminator LCs available from GW on my raven guard assault captain and they had a pretty good look, ill check to see if i have more sets of those to use. i would only use a few things in that new FW kit and 20 sterling is a bit steep for a couple bits. i got my two contemptors today also so ill be assembling those.

regarding paint and having a organized goal to work towards:
i think i have all the colors for raven guard (RG), they should be fairly easy to paint. is it ok to paint when its 40-50 degrees F in my garage or is that too cold? i want stuff to apply and dry properly. part of me also wants to wait for the istvaan V book to come out so i can see what the official raven guard armor looked like at the time of the heresy; but im not sure what the wait on that book will be (one or more years? this summer? would the raven guard even be in that book?). i dont recall anywhere stating that the RG armor has changed between HH and 40k so i could just paint what i have now and hope for the best. I need to organize my force into something cohesive as well; at the moment im mostly building models because they are cool. I need to build a structured RG company (i think i will make at least 100 marines to represent a structured RG HH company) and start using my ridiculously expensive betrayal book to that end. the problem there is that again RG are not part of this book. but im sure i can wing it and then tweak as the actual RG stuff is released, betrayal does set ground work for legion generic with 4 sections being legion specific so maybe the next big HH book (BHHB) will be only the legion specifics for the rest of the istvaan 5 legions and refer back to BHHB1 for the generic details. im sure there will be some RG specific kits in our future that i will have to pick up anyways. so much speculation it makes my head hurt...

on stormbirds:
i think 100 marines and a storm bird would make a really nice army all painted up as RG, ruined city scape as the base. if a storm bird can carry 100 marines what else can they carry? is there any reference given to 100? plus any vehicles or contemptors? ive been searching the net for storm birds and emailing GW/BL/FW demanding official art work but i have not received a response (mostly just to prod them to make something in the future). im hoping they will respond in the next book by including a pic of a storm bird. The old storm bird depicted in epic 40k art does not fit the HH description at all, so im not even considering that. the current design is a sleek avian looking assault fighter, stealth intra system capable with vtol and long aggressive forward swept wings with the ability to fold to store on board battle barges, racks of missiles, autocannon and lascannon for weapons, maybe a titan grade energy weapon or two. the models ive seen people convert are exemplifying the old art with massive vtol fans, a bulky drop ship body, and largely not looking anything like what the HH series describes, merely matching the severely outdated art work (and even those artworks vary wildly). ive found one 3d render of a scaled up thunder hawk that was sleeker and more aggressive but still not quite fitting the description. in my mind i picture the whole wing assembly swinging from a horizontal to vertical position to maneuver the wings for vtol. i saw an anime pic from the 70s, probably something from one of the gundam series, that really looked like what i have in my mind. and given the variance between chapters in storm bird design i wouldn't be opposed to making my own prior to any official art work being released. i found some huge 3'x3' sheets of 3mm white plastic at Lowes hardware, $10 a sheet, got 4 sheets of it so im thinking ill make a 30mm scale mock up of one and go from there. the rest of the big sheets are for my next batch of warlords (the original sheet metal ones were sold before i even finished them as kits, but i have all the templates. the current owners have pics here and on other forums just look for 40k scale warlord). im going to focus on HH right now and not FB or 40k or the reaper bones stuff that will be incoming in the near future, so i need to stay focused :P HAH the inlaws just left im busting out the plastic board and some sheets of construction paper to make a storm bird. pics tonight!

02-01-2013, 02:49
so heres my 2d paper mock up of a storm bird, and on the table there are the drawings i made to go on. the FW thunder hawk is 19" long with a 17" wingspan, this is about 30" long and 30" wide. this thing kinda looks like a cobra bomber from 1980s of GI Joe vintage. it looks like it would be able to only hold about 40 plastic GW marines but given a GW rhino can hold about 5 marines 40k vehicles are apparently not to scale anyhow. its considerably larger than a thunder hawk however (i don't have one for comparison). and again this is just the foot print of the wings and fuselage, very rough. my drawings there are based on the storm eagle/thunderhawk and the description from the HH books.

input? ideas? criticism? turbo laser(s) dorsal or underslung?

06-01-2013, 08:02
got my basing stuff.

06-01-2013, 17:14
I too dislike the "punch-knife" style. They don't look fast enough, you know? I think the chaos one is your best bet. It shouldn't need a whole lot of stuff removed thought. I find that the legion armours have a bit of a chaos ascetic to them with the rivets and the lightning bolts.
Keep at it.

06-01-2013, 20:42
The chaos claws look lovely. Eager to see more. I thought the Stormbird could transport 50 marines?

08-01-2013, 23:51
depends on which book you read, but its usually between 60 and 100. im guessing that throughout the crusade many variations were built. the originals made for the pan pacific wars by the yngdesian bloc were actually stealth fighter bombers later converted to carry a group of thunder warriors in unification wars, so i could make this model represent an earlier piece that was given as a gift to Corax (to fit my backstory) because its a slightly smaller more agile version, and Corax took a liking to it on his first visit to Terra. maybe it belonged to the custodes as a tour bus for primarchs visiting the palace originally.

What book is that from?

09-01-2013, 03:24
well im going through my books to find that, i know i read it and didnt make it up...obviously the first mention is in horus rising p 139 with a description and basic history but the bit about being converted fighter bombers from a previous regime i cant find. i thought it was here in outcast dead, but i cant find where. unless i read it in the big horus heresy rule book...ill check there when im done scanning outcast dead. there was a section here in OD about the thunder warriors and it briefly mentions storm birds so i want to find that first.

corvus cataphractii. yay or nay? i think it kind of fits for some reason, and im tempted to do it.

im in the process of kit bashing tartaros, cataphractii, deathshroud and justaerin kits. should be interesting...
i wish i had more RT era grey knight halberds/swords. those were cool. i might use the few i have left on these. I think ill paint these as a motley group of isstvan 5 survivors; ravenguard and iron hands with a couple salamanders.

I quite like that conversion. It looks pretty cool, and uniquely RG.

16-07-2013, 21:27
im going to finish the mk6 cataphractii when i get home from work tonight, what weapons should i give him? im thinking lightning claws

22-07-2013, 07:11

cataphractii squad one.

cataphractii squad two.

tartaros squad one.

left overs. ill need more cataphractii shoulder slabs to finish the bloke on the right.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c115/eblick99/IMG_0791_zpsa9da585d.jpg (http://s26.photobucket.com/user/eblick99/media/IMG_0791_zpsa9da585d.jpg.html)

praetor number two.

not sure what to do with this one. definitely going to arm him differently as i will not use him as a carchodon but as a raven guard. the whole mk5 terminator theme goes well with raven guard. i will use his original shoulders, but not sure if i should just use cataphractii lightning claws or maybe use that Huron power claw for his right arm them give him a plasma gun or another volkite gun in his left hand. any input?

not much new just waiting for more releases. I did order book 2: massacre (reason for this post). i also picked up a bunch more mkII, mkIII, mkIV, mkV and mkVI marines from FW as well with some conversion bits. going to bash these with the new sternguard/vanguard/tactical GW marine kits. still working on the thunderhawk from my other thread which may become a raven guard or iron hands TH for use in HH games. picked up more titan weapons and a volcano cannon for the TH off ebay, as well as some brass etchings from FW with other order i placed last night. maybe ill go work on that some right now as Im furloughed this week.

14-10-2013, 06:46
went ahead and finished the contemptors i got a long time ago. also made some shots of size comparisons for the current types of armor. I realized that the trend of adding a new massive unit wasnt done with marines; just the centurions. hopefully when guard comes out they will do an imperial knight. the leviathan is cool but its not GW.
