View Full Version : 5 Day Tau Mech Army!

Hello!

I have just under 5 days off from work (starting yesterday!) so I've decided to take a break from my Necrons (see blog!) and paint up my Tau army that has sat in it's case since last year. It's a full Mech list with lots of vehicles and not so much infantry, as you'd expect!

As today as now DAY 2 I will post yesterdays photos!

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/Dezartfox/Models%203/2012-12-27221443.jpg

So that's the army after I'd done the repairs and built the FW suit to use as my commander. I primed the models and began the long process of aibrushing the colours on!

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/Dezartfox/Models%203/2012-12-28125017.jpg

I've decided to go with a desert theme to match the rest of my armies..

The colours I used to airbrush were xv-88 as a base, then I created a gradient effect using Deathclaw Brown, Balor Brown, Zamesi Desert with a final highlight of ushabti bone.

Finally I glossed the models and used oil wash mixed with turps to darken the panel lines, after that I matt varnished the models.

DAY TWO

Today I started filling in the greys (I don't like metallics on tau, just looks weird) and testing the scheme on the Fire Warriors. Most of this is just made up as I go!

I wash the greys with seraphim sepia to tie them in with the desert theme

The grey is the grey airbrush primer from Vallejo,

I also nearly finished the commander today, just need to finish the missile pod, the base and add some transfers!

He's accompanied by two shield drones that are a simple conversion from the normal gun drone, with the antennas from the stealth suit kits

For the glows I use blue weathering powder from Secret Weapon, I first paint the glowing item white, let it dry and brush on the powder, then I carefully apply the white again to make it look MORE glowy!

Wow! Impressive work thus far. What do you use for airbrush thinner, what are your proportions, and what PSI do you find preferable? I may have to steal this idea...

Dezartfox
29-12-2012, 19:39
Cheers!

I've used a few methods over the years.. water, screen wash and now I'm using vallejo airbrush thinner!
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/Dezartfox/Models%203/2012-12-28125032.jpg

Ratios are just guessed really, it's until it feels right. thin enough so it will go through the airbrush but not so thin it becomes a wash. I test a bit on my thumb and if it covers then I'll use it! I prefer to thin the GW paints than use the vallejo air brush paints as they have a higher pigment thus better coverage :) However if you thin them too much they will separate whilst drying. You can see in the image above on the engine where the colour is starting to separate, this was just the base coat so I wasn;t too worried.

As for PSI I have no idea. I have a pretty cheap compressor in the shape of an elephant and some cheap airbrushes (was a gravity fed one and a suction fed one with varying needles for about 40). This was all done with a siuction fed brush (which people generally complain about) as I was thinning a lot of paint at once.

http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/AIRBRUSH_KITS_AND_SPARES.html
(the elephant compressor)
I've had that compressor for a few years and never felt the need to upgrade it. I only tend to base coat and the odd zenithial highlighting, this is the first project with lots of colours!

Really impressive work, I tired a similar sized force to a similar time frame with my orks but didnt paint nearly as fast to to as high a standard. loving the crisp effect of your painting :)

Managed to finish the two Piranhas tonight, didn't get too much done today so will have to crack on tomorrow!

Still waiting for the Micro Sol to dry on the transfers:

Awesome stuff, they look great and you have nice clean scheme. My one criticism is the mould lines and injection marks on the models, they let them down a bit, but seeing as you are doing this in 5 days its pretty impressive. I love the glowing effects

Beautiful painting! I really want to try out an airbrush at some point. It gives such a smooth finish (I'm aware it also requires a lot of skill and practice!)

Yeah the mold lines are starting to make me sad too...when I originally built the army I thought I had cleaned them. I guess not! And then I went too far and now its too late to clean them :(

So end of DAY THREE and I've greyed and washed all the vehicles and Fire Warriors. I've started applying transfers so I can matt varnish them in the morning and then get on with weathering them with powders. Everything is on schedule so far!

wow, impressive! I've got like 3.000pts of this army and your choice to do a really simple, almost bi-color scheme is amazingly nice fitting for the Taus! I wonder how it can look with some sponge-applied damages...

Look! A SKYRAY!
Nobody uses these anymore.. and I rescued mine from a bag of broken models. It's in pretty bad shape and I had intended to replace it. Alas I don't like near a GW.. and the closest model shop doesn't stock anything Tau related at all.

Well as I had an entire day to paint stuff.. I decided to get boost the army to 1750!

At the moment the list is 1497 and this stealth suit team are a nice 253 points (only because the leader has a blacksun filter!)

But wait.. are they primed white? Or Grey?

Very impressive working pace! They look really great!

edit: the page I was looking at was had not been refreshed - I missed the last updates.
I'm very curious about those .. last ones ... gah , I don't speak much Tau.
The basing is really cool as well! May I request a semi-close up of some of the bases ? :)

Happy new year btw

Great, the camo-stealth is simply great...gonna steal you that idea..!

I think that the big deal on the "finished!" effect of this army is made by the optics and visors effects...how did you obtain that light/hot effect? with the airbrush? It looks easy to do, like white basecoat and then a little blue spray with the airbrush in the middle (for the vehicles) but it looks too nice to be so easy :P and for the fusion guns of the piranha for example?

However, your work is excellent

He's using a technique that a friend and I have been talking about for a while, using weathering powders to apply a blended OSL like effect with more control than airbrushing.

(I do agree that the OSL and weathering really makes this army work!)

If you're super confident in your airbrush skills, a small halo of paint mixed with a lot of glaze medium isn't too hard, but I almost ruined the first model I tried doing airbrushed glow effects on.

Bingo!
I use blue weathering powder from Secret Weapon. I paint the glowing object white. and depending on the depth (like eye sockets etc) I'll sometimes glaze it blue, once that's dry brush on the powder and finally paint the source white again. Similar to the eye on my necron lord:

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg246/Dezartfox/Models%203/005-2.jpg

I find it a lot safer than airbrushing it on, it's more controlled and looks more natural (And I don;t have to clean an airbrush)

thanks alot, and, I must agree that cleaning the airbrush is really boring :P a last trivia, how do you fix the powder?

Dezartfox

I don't, I find with the dark sand the and blue, they tend to be in places where you don't touch the model. Like the recesses etc.
Plus if it does eventually rub off it's easy enough to apply a little more before events etc :)

Unless I rub at it pretty hard with a sweaty finger it tends to stick perfectly fine for me!

I will have to see how the stealth team fair though.. as they are primarily weathering powders!

That's an awesome army! Great motivation, simple effective scheme. The bases, weathering, vent burns and OSL really turn a '3-color based army' into a subtly realistic paint job. Shame about the mould lines though.

Also the 360 spin tutorial is slick too, nice blog...

Bases were Blackfire earth texture paint (or Skragg brown if you use paint) with Dark Sand weathering powder brushed on.

Truly amazing. I've picked up an airbrush and terrified to use it. How do you get the gradiation in the colour on your tanks? When painting you can layer highlights by placing "bands" of lighter colour from inside to out (or vice versa) how do you achieve this with an airbrush?

many thanks in advance and keep it up!
