Evening ladies and gents.

Since i've got two weeks before this begins i thought i'd show all the planning on here. The first 3 months of the project are set in stone, as i'm part of a tale of gamers being held at my local club. As a result i've got a few things to sort out as this evolves.

The Budget; 280 (models priced at GW prices, even if your using FW versions of existing models or purchase armies at discount)
The Time scale; 7 months.

Month One; Tau Starter Set
Month Two; Tau battlesuit commander
Month Three; Hammerhead

The scheme;

In honesty it wasn't hard to decide this, i want to go straight forwards with this as a standard tau force. I wanted a fairly codex cover/artwork scheme, main examples;

The interior is an attempt to paint using only an airbrush, oil paints and a sponge. The exception being the seat and detailing which will be done during the next phase;

The interior of what is that? A devilfish? Never seen that before (I don't collect Tau though). It looks fairly realistic.

It looks frakkin fantastic. What colour do you use as a base when doing your interiors?

Cannot wait to see more of this. Subscribed.

both kits, it's the chassis on the basic tank kit that's in use on the whole range.

Thanks man! the majority of it is airbrush work with xv-88 and vallejo air white steadily mixed until i had a nice layered progression.

For a slight detour the question was raised on two other forums about why i chose a dirty interior. I'm using it to represent a series of different cultural psychologies. Allow me to explain;

The fire caste is, undoubtedly, pragmatic. They are more likely to be concerned with how a tank functions as a transport than how clean and neat the interior is. I wanted a way, on the interior, to show this functional mind set without leaving it a bland affair. The best way, to my mind, was to show paint damage and accumulated dirt. It's also a way of showing an aged interior without resorting to metallics and powdering.

The clean exterior paint scheme is the way i'm using to show the earth caste's desire for perfection (even aesthetics) for all that they build. Similarly, to represent that the fire warrior would allow no external appearance that the battles they have fought could leave any lasting blemish on the tools of the greater good. The interior is, as pointed out above, an exercise in pragmatism. The seat i want to be padded, but padded in a way that says function over comfort. I want it to be a thin strip of padding designed to keep specific pressures off the tau armour when they sit down, rather than making them comfortable. It's why i've done everything i can to make it look very flat and basic.

Now for a finished interior... i'm happy enough with it for a test pig, given the level of detail of the interior i think i've done a half descent job. The real test will be how it compares with the exterior in a few weeks time.

Looks really amazing. I just picture seeing a firewarrior with a grave injury lying on the floor with another firewarrior hoving over him, seeing to his injuries, and finally a third with the hatch open, laying down covering fire for the rest of the squad to embark. (I'n my head 3 firewarriors will fit inside that room and still look good.)

I know someone's work is good when if leads to a picture of the action scene going on, just by the quality of the art.

This came out of the blue! Love the fact that you`re doing Tau, they are not getting a lot of loving on a general basis.

But as far as rumours go that Tau might be on the "near horizon". What do you think about that as far as possible major changes coming?

I don't agree with you there. I'm thinking more on the line of firefighters who keep their equipment sparkly clean to make sure that everything work properly. As Tau is more a desert (i.e. sandy hot) world, I don't see the interior of a Devilfish as being grungy. It's a lot more likely to be scruffed, sun-bleached, and overall sandy.
On another note, the work is great. I would see a Devilfish in that state as part of a hunter cadre fighting a prolonged battle and having hard times. Too few resources to keep the equipment other than working but the state of the interior affecting the morale of the fire warriors. Makes for grittier, more ferocious troop as they are a little fed up and looking forward to getting this business settled.

Great stuff, G.Hawke! I'm looking forwards to seeing what you do with this project.
The new huge Riptide suit looks awesome and I think your style would look amazing on this.
