View Full Version : Heretian - Winter Tau

21-01-2013, 11:26
I recently returned to playing 40k after over a decade without buying a model or playing a game. I have also started up my Wood Elves for WHFB again but will probably post them in the other section later.

I received a Tau Battleforce set from a friend who had decided to go to Chaos Marines after the release of their new Codex. Everything was unpainted but most had been assembled. After looking around I decided that a Winter theme fitted with my current thoughts (It was October) and was something I had not done before.

I quickly broke out a lot of the models and then had to take them apart for cleanup. Turns out the box he had bought was 2nd hand to him and all pre-assembled so being 3rd hand to me needed some work. I did a quick job as was not looking for any particular awards and I can live with the odd mould line as long as it isnt too bad. Looking back at some of the painted ones I think I should have spent some more time but oh well.

First up as always is a test model to check the scheme's overall look.

After painting a single model, we headed over to Warhammer World for a day out of Fantasy gaming where I was drawn in to the shop and somehow found myself buying Forgeworld Broadsides and Remora's. I had at this point still not playing a 40k game so may have been jumping the gun a bit!

After assembly, the Remora's and Broadsides became my test pieces. I played around with colours and found a combo I liked. I kept the palette simple with only 4 main colours to use.

21-01-2013, 17:55
Next up after the test models was a Devilfish to see how the scheme would look on a larger model.

I think it came out ok. Still considering which and where to place some transfers to add some markings and further detail. Drones are also waiting as quite simply they look boring to do!

21-01-2013, 18:05
December/January consisted of a couple more Forgeworld options. Another visit to WHW and I came away with a pair of Tetra's. Only 1 pictured as the 2nd one is a January option.

The SMS Broadside was a Christmas present from a friend and takes my compliment to 3.

Loving the look of Tetra's but still to use them in battle. If they work as people tell me I will have to go for another. Infact I have only played 1 game so far and lost terribly :(

Painting in January has picked up speed as I managed to aquire an airbrush setup for Christmas. Loving smooth surfaces but hating having to sand my remora's smooth again to repaint with it as the brush strokes were driving me mad!

21-01-2013, 18:09
Having been working with Forgeworld suits I started painting up a standard Crisis suit to use. Not happy with them at all as they just look awful in comparison. As such I will be getting rid of the 2 I have and building a Forgeworld Suit only army. This now means that based on my list for an upcoming tournament I will need to purchase 8 XV-89's :(

I also revisted my Firewarriors as next to the Broadsides and Tetra's they were looking a little dull. A couple of red accents helped bring them out a bit.

I will pop up a picture of the test Crisis Suit after I take some but will leave with a picture of most of my FW collection. Both Tetra's are now painted and I have a full team of 8 Firewarriors complete with the new accents too.

That's definitely a well done 40k reboot on your side!

The colours are a great combo (well it's pretty hard to beat white, red and "kinda" black... just in terms of colour ofc ;) ) and I really like your suites for instance. Though red is just the spot colour, I'd like to see more of this on your commander.

In terms of battlesuites, well the forgeworld's ancles are imo the biggest improvement to the very straight standing/walking GW-Suites - 8 FW-Suites gonna be quite an investment - well you apparantly at least, you don't have shipping costs :D.

The red stripe ion top the Firewarriors' pulserifle is an improvement, agreed.

23-01-2013, 20:54
Commander will have more Red. Waiting to buy a FW commander model for him though before I work out the exact scheme.

Finished my first whole Firewarrior squad though and really pleased with the results.

Finished the first squad of Firewarriors. Really happy with the overall result.

two words: Gloss Varnish.

gloss up all the white armor bits and it'll look amazing.

27-01-2013, 15:56
Everything looks fantabulous!

Any recipe on how you paint the white? From undercoat to finished product?

28-01-2013, 09:19
Initial models were done with GW ceramite white over a cheap white primer which gave a nice colour but not such a great finish. Everything since Christmas has been done using Vallejo White Surface primer and Vallejo Model Air White thinned with 25% thinner from an airbrush. Keeping coats thin and building them up 2-4 deep to make a nice flat white.

There is no shading applied to the armour plates other than the panel lines and I rely on real shadows to provide anything else. This helps to keep the colour bright and ensure it pops.

Once complete I apply 2 coats of Vallejo Liquid Acrylic Matt to the whole model to flat it out. This is thinner 50/50 with Vallejo Thinner and applied thinly and allowed to dry for at least 4 hours before the second coat is applied.

I use Vallejo decal medium and fix to ensure any decals applied at flat and blended into the colour without leaving any edge marks prior to the varnish stages.

The last step is to go back over the model and any lenses get 2 coats of GW 'Ardcoat Gloss to put a real shine on them.

I have nearly finished my 2nd Remora drone after having to sand off the top panels as the finish was a bit rough after apply paint too thickly with a brush. Once removed I thinned out the GW colour I was using and put it through the airbrush to recoat. Took 30 minutes to mask off the area and 30 seconds to paint but guess that is how it goes! Couple of lenses to do an a little more work on panel lines and it will be done.

Heading to Warhammer World this weekend for some games and will be buying 6 XV-89 suits to use as normal Crisis Suits and possible a R'Alai and a Barracuda. Will do full WIP shots of these from build to completion as it is something I am missing from the current group.

Played my first game of a campaign over the weekend and eeked out a draw from a Necron opponent running 6 fliers and who had 350 points more than me. Was happy enough with the result but worked out I need more Firewarriors as by the end of the game I was down to 2 holding an objective from a 22 strong start.

28-01-2013, 21:06
These look awesome!

29-01-2013, 11:07
Thanks for comments. Any thoughts on improvement would be good. For self biased, I did consider Gloss on the white but thought it would be a bit too storm trooper.

Forgeworld suits ordered for pickup on Saturday. 6 x XV-89's and 1 x Shas'o R'myr to use as a commander. Will probably resculpt hands for him though as don't want to use his shield or TL Plasma but wanted the different looking body and head for a commander. Will be breaking out the magnets too for customisable weapon options on all the suits.

Need to think of a scheme for the commander as want more colour in him and he needs to stand out but want to keep the theme. Considering an Armies on Parade entry this year if works out they look good enough and I get time to build a board.

Busy Sunday ahead with cleaning and sanding resin!

Back from an epic Warhammer World trip yesterday where big games were played and much food was eaten.

Had our local club day today and time with the Mrs means not been able to post.

Picked up my Tau Crisis Suits and so glad I have gone with the Forgeworld option. Only 3 assembled and dodgy phone pics below as WIP. Still have 3 more suits and a Commander to build but will be doing them this week. Got a game on Sunday so setting myself a target of having them all at least tabletop ready with primer and base colours. All weapons are magnetised to make swapping out loads easier. Have 6 of each weapon and will sculpt/convert some extras if needed.

Good job sir! :D You pulled off winter tau. Not many can do that.

06-02-2013, 18:50
Good looking Tau army.
I play Tau so take that joke with a grain of salt. What color do Tau turn to when they freeze? Pink...

10-02-2013, 12:16
Way behind on taking pictures but moving forward with painting.

Army shot of my Tau.

Not framed very well and missing 4 suits that are still being built and a load of drones in a box.

Lots still to paint!

Can't believe what a difference those FW suits make to a tau army, this is a great force, and the clean look is really working for them.

12-02-2013, 23:37
Thanks. I agree the FW suits make a big difference over the normal ones. Next on my list after this lot is done will be a squad of XV-9's or a Barracuda. Not buying any GW stuff until after launch of new lines whenever they come (Might need a box of Firewarriors though as not got enough for playing with!).

Progress on 4 Crisis Suits. All 9 are built but waiting on primer for last few. These are still WIP. Have kept it simple. 3 colours (Red, White, Grey) with some black lining and a black wash on the grey of the legs. All will be based on snow bases to match the rest.

Nicely done with the 4-colour-only palette.
I second your thoughts about the FW suits, but nonetheless you can get very nice results out of the GW ones when you convert them and put some time in them.
I am always surprised what great ideas people of the web have and I am currently working on a new suit myself.

Imo your forward jumping crisis is a bit too dynamic for me, but maybe that's just cause he isn't finished yet ;)

Very cartoony, in a good way. My husband likes to base his Tau Schemes from 80's Cartoons like Transformers and Robotech. :P

10-03-2013, 22:48
Awesome, I love this colour scheme and some of those models are beautiful! I'm subscribed.

11-03-2013, 00:50
Really awesome

I love the Tau battlesuits, but I really love the attack drone you've got there for some reason. It just looks so fitting and brilliant.

I still think the fella's at FW could have designed the pathefinder speeder better but thats just me.

All in all it looks like an ******* awesome battle force

14-03-2013, 09:36
Falling behind on this at the moment as finishing off a Legion of the Damned commission for a friend. His should be done by Saturday for collection so can crack on again with the battlesuits. Will also start thinking of a scheme for my Kroot in case they become worth taking soon! ;)

17-03-2013, 20:05
Heretian, do you spray the Vallejo primer through your airbrush? If you do, how much do you thin it?

17-03-2013, 20:37
Are those weapons interchangeable on the battlesuits, or is it just because they're plastic compared to the resin of the suits?

Heretian, do you spray the Vallejo primer through your airbrush? If you do, how much do you thin it?

The Vallejo primer goes through the airbrush without any thinning. Sometimes I will add a drop or 2 of the Vallejo thinner but this is probably more habit than anything as I have found it is not needed so far.

Are those weapons interchangeable on the battlesuits, or is it just because they're plastic compared to the resin of the suits?

THE \/ince

The weapons are resin but are magnetised and each suit is fully customisable on its loadout. I am making some more weapons from the plastic weapons from the suit sprues as you get a full set with each Forgeworld suit. This means I should be able to twin-link or have any combo I want by having 2 of each for each suit.

Legion of the Damned commission finished and delivered. Managed a few snaps before they went away. Friend is buying me 2 new Riptides for my Tau upon release as payment so I'm happy :). About 30 hours total work.

Unfortunately I have been summoned across the water for meetings for a few days so no painting until at least Wednesday.

Full album can be found here for what kept me away from the Tau: http://imageshack.us/g/1/10065179/

Small update from me prior to launch on Sat. Lots more to do and order going in for Riptides, Sunsharks and probably some pathfinders.

5 Forgeworld suits done (Couple of decals missing though on commander). Need to do their magnetic weapon options but shouldn't take long to do and undecided on how to paint them until I do all the suits.

4 suits left to do! :(

Well jumping on the launch wagon, I built my first of 2 Riptides on Saturday prior to going to the WHW Open Day on Sunday. Needs primer and painting but the scale against my XV-89/R'Myr Commander is impressive.

Fully magnetised for main weapon to allow swaps and also shield for transport/painting. Secondary systems will be connected with magnets to any of the available hardpoints.

Started a Sunshark last night. Changed the tail to invert the vanes and remove the connecting beams. Pic to follow.

Nice scheme. Have you thought about adding something to your Riptides' bases to give the sense of their scale? I'm finding the ones I see on the net often look like a three-up that's being shoe-horned in, unless they have something to help integrate them.

13-04-2013, 21:13
This might sound like a really basic question but its something in struggling to do on my Tau - how do you get the black definition between the panels/plates on the armour and vehicles?

My best guess is either blacklining, which can be tedious and messy (since the plates are white), or shading before painting the plates.

Great work Heretian, your colour scheme is superb and very well executed. I second the demand for something on the riptide's base for a sense of scale. Keep it up !

Beautiful looking army you have there. I love the clean colours, really captures the nature of the Tau.

14-04-2013, 09:10
Thanks for comments. Hopefully get some more done today.

I have a box of marine bits and was considering putting some on the base dead and half buried in the snow. There is a lot of room on the bases and with 2 Riptides and a Sunshark to do I might need to add something.

The panel lines are done blacklining. A mix of Nuln Oil and Vallejo Matt Medium is brushed in to the gaps very carefully. The white panels make it a pain if you make a mistake though. I was going to go the route of gloss varnish then do the lines with oil based paints followed by a final matt varnish but I have neither enough gloss or any oil based paints.

17-04-2013, 00:49
More work on the Riptide. Still making decisions as I go too on which colours where.

Couple of pics of stuff I have been doing. Not a whole lot of progress on Tau so far and has been a slow week or so with other stuff going on. I have prepped 3 Piranha's I got 2nd hand but otherwise been a slow slog on the Riptide.

The Cadre Fireblade below took about 5 hours to do and I did him over 2 days.

Few pics of the Riptides in their WIP status. Secondary weapons and connecting pipe for main weapon to finish on the first one and quite a bit to do on the 2nd still! Overall I am fairly happy with them though.

Change in direction a bit and a break from Tau.

Whilst working on a Brettonian commission myself and a Friend have decided a combined Nid swarm for large games is a project to tackle.

Working on test schemes and came up with the following in under an hour.

I am not a fan of the claws and probably going to change them to black or a very dark blue/green.

http://imageshack.us/scaled/medium/51/o8q2.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/o8q2.jpg/)

Any thoughts? Might have to add more colour yet as it only uses 4 colours total.

14-09-2013, 10:44
Well you got definitely some thing done, since I peeked in here last time.
The thing I like the most about those Riptides is the stripe pattern on there upper legs, for me it's definitley a point to look at.
Besides this nice clean work (those Suits are practically mint, aren't they?) :).

Concerning the Nid, I'd not go with solid-bleachedbone claws, maybe take awash between grey/green and brown. All in all it reminds me on hivefleet hydra (definitely a good thing!). Apart from this it looks dark and mean. Have fun with it, I'm excited about the things to come for nidz ;).

An interesting direction for the claws....

Use a "turquoise" like color. The old Hawk Turquoise (Sotek Green now), or if using Vallejo, the Blue Green or Turquoise.

It would tie in with the green carapace, and yet separate the claws. Highlight with an ice/light blue, a light green, or even an off white. May need to experiment with those to find the best match for you.

Did some work last night on a Forgeworld Tau commander (Shas'O R'alai) and slowly getting back to my Tau.

Still got a few bit to do to finish off the paint and then transfers to add but the bases are down.
