So if we take the word 'bolter' do we translate directly or do we have to do some cleaver prefix subjunctive stuff?

I don't know about 'bolter', but if you want to find canon Tau words, then you should check this thread out.

As for other words; there are many phrases that have no known words in Tau language. In these cases you could simply invent a Tauish word, find an appropriate fusion of existing phrases or simply leave it in Gothic. If you do the latter, there is no necessity for clever prefix conjunctive stuff. If you do the former, the link should give all the information you require.

I hope that helped.

From the same site, Advanced Tau Tactica, also comes this (http://www.advancedtautactica.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1189). It has a list of some other useful sites to check out.

You'd just use the Tau letters if you're trying to translate a foreign word - much like we do in English with things like place names or adopted words.
Alternatively you can come up with (or see if someone's done it already) a replacement word, but there's not really been any stuff done with Tau grammar as far as I know.

According to Fire Warrior (The game) in Introduction, when showed the Eldar, Tyranids and Necrons, the text display is a simple Tau Lexicon Translation. So if I were you, I would simply use Tau Letters and spell 'Bolter'
