View Full Version : Dropzone commander - PHR

Greetings all. I recently heard about a new game called Dropzone Commander and wanted to start a blog of what I came up with (sorry for the picture quality, Im stuck using my phone at the moment).

After a (VERY) long time thinking through PHR or Shaltari I ended up with the former as I had a clearer idea of what I would want as a paint scheme.

Having bought a good chunk of models to get me started and convincing a group of friends to enter in to a campaign Im going to run I was ready to get modelling.

Now I have to admit to being a bit pedantic with my little men. If I can do something to add to the look of them I generally will. So first up was magnetising the walkers to the drop ships. There are a load of pics/guides on the site from people who have done an excellent job of this so I wont go into that any further and waste anyone's time.

Next up came an issue for me that I had spotted when I was looking at pics. I needed the walkers to look like they were moving. This started simply enough with repositioning some toes so I could give the look of walking:

This started to progress to cutting through the leg joints so I could have some stepping forward with a flat foot:

And finally (and I have to admit with some accidental finger stabbing with a pin drill) was doing the scouts:

Finally the commander walkers (Zeus) needed to have something to help them stand out in the crowd. I was thinking of a banner but the need to have them being able to load onto the dropship killed that idea. So I ended up opting for a loin cloth. Now as much as I like the look (and as tempted as I was) I couldnt find the patience to do this for all the walkers, so just the Zeus :p

Having a look at that game, its pretty amazing what that one guy has been able to put together
How tall are the infantry, if youve got any...

Good work jumping in with repositioning and drilling. It can be daunting slicing up new minis

The infantry are 10mm. I do love their stuff. Casting quality is a little hit-and-miss and I have no idea why they decided to make the tanks the way they have, but it's something I'd love to get into.

dugall, the reasons you commented above are exactly the ones that made me want to give it a go. And the fact that the game is from one person really shows in how brought together everything is in terms of rules and models. Loving it.

Onwards, over the half term Ive had enough free time to get some painting done. Wooho!! I thought I would start with the Athena as its one of my favourite models in the range and probably the model that tipped me over the edge to collecting PHR. As the title of the thread suggests I wanted to put some battle damage and signs that the models have been fighting. I like the futuristic look of the game but I imagine aircraft/dropships/walkers are going to take some damage entering the atmosphere and during the battles before being destroyed so wanted to show that on the models. Being an aircraft and zooming past I thought the Athena wouldnt suffer too much so I didnt go all out on the battle damage, just some chips and engine exhaust. This should also help to give a sense of movement. I also wanted to add a slight glow from the lights, this will play more a part in the dropships but it would hopefully help to keep the army cohesive.

That is a great paint job, but the forward cockpit (?) looks really scarred. Shouldn't it be nice and smooth?

Yeah it should be. In person it looks much nicer. I might have to put on another layer of varnish (not sure exactly what happened).

The loin cloth gives off a really cool vibe. Kind of reminds me of the banners on the 40K Titans. You should do some cool banner design on it.

When I should have been working this evening Ive got my Poseidon dropship done (woops!). As its a lot slower moving and can take more punishment I went for more battle damage and as I can see it being in the air for longer before heading back to base there is more exhaust fumes as well.

I had also spent some time looking at the model and noticed that there appeared to be what might be lights at the ends of the "wings" which I had already decided to paint with the glow hitting the turbines. I spent some time thinking how to do this and ended up going with red on the left and green lights on the right (as a boat would have). I thought these navigation lights (although most likely turned off when in battle thinking about it) would be a nice touch.

Just realised you cant see the lights in those pictures. I will have to get another pic later. Douhh....

Light or not, those look really cool. I think those're the first weathered PHR I've seen, and I like them a lot more that way. Can't wait to see the walkers!

Well its been a while (my school was Ofsteded recently so the work was a bit mental). But I have had a little more time recently and finally got to painting a few walkers.

Only some type 1's so far.

Of course they also need a way of getting to the battle field!

Excellent stuff!

Well its a bit bright today so my photos arent exactly great so sorry about that. I really need to make a photo box and find my camera instead of using my phone. But until I get more time this will have to do.

Here are four Odins including some with a bit of modifications to the legs (Sorry about the photo quality):
