View Full Version : Mech Tau 1 step at a time

23-05-2006, 00:32
So my ig army is soon finished. That means i can get on with my new Mech tau army. I want to try several things with this army:

- Magnets (just got some from germany. tiny strong things)
- AirBrush (have been doing some research, and am going to invest in one next paycheck)
- Tapemasking ( will look further in to this when i get my Airbrush)
- Fluid and original modellposes ( every FireW and XV suit. with the help of magnets)(edit: fire warrirs and magnets is a no go. As it is to fidly and did not turn out as good as i expected)
- My chosen colorscheme
I know it was the second in the poll. But it is the most orignale.
- Forge world stuff (some of wich just arrived :D)
- Urban or Canyon bases

So that is what i want to achieve. On to the endless list of models to get:

7x XV89 (fw) V (1 almost finished)
6x XV25 X
12x Phatfinders X
36x Fire warriors V
12x Fire warriors V
6x Devil FishesV ( 1 are wip)
2x Hammer heads (Skyray box:rolleyes: )V
1x Barracuda (fw) V ( just chilling in its nice cardboard hangar togthere with 6 XV89 )
1x Air cast pilots (fw) V
1x Bitz order V
1x Airbrush with Compressor V

My bank manager just had a heartattack:eyebrows:. So i will try to post as many updates as possible

23-05-2006, 00:34
First update.
I started to paint my Fw Pilots and i have to say they are just so great. Really nice models wich are fun to paint. Still wip.

I have also been messing around with my magnets.
The ones under the pilots foot is 3mm x 1mm while the ones on the ruler are 1mm x 1mm. They are all really strong, i can drop a model on the floor and they wont break off.

23-05-2006, 00:41
Sounds like you got a lot to do. They are looking good so far. I have always liked Tau.... As targets;)
Have Fun!

24-05-2006, 08:49

dam thats asome man. very nice and clean.

24-05-2006, 14:54
Very nice, you magnetising(sp?) all of your models to their bases? And if so, what is the purpose of this? I can't think why you would'nt just glue them....

25-05-2006, 04:15
It was just an experiment for easy painting on these models. I will pin the rest of my models, but I will magntise arms and heads :D

25-05-2006, 04:19
Very nice scheme (optimus prime-esque), and the way you did the cloth looks like the greatest cloth I have ever seen. How many layers of highlights on it?

25-05-2006, 10:39
Just 6 its "graveyard earth:black:bleached bone" in

Thinned down with water and a drop of glass soap, then fheaterd on the model.

26-05-2006, 15:20
Update time.

My pilots are almost done they only need squad(sept) markings and bases

The markings i think i will do when i have goten through some firew sqauds. As for bases im thinking tau landing pad.

Enough with the talk on to the pics.

04-06-2006, 00:24
UpDate time :D

I went to my local hobby store and picked up a air brush and a compersor yesterday. And i must say this thing baffels me. It is just so accuratre, smooth and fast. Im never going to paint a tank with tankbrush again, Ever!

I have spent the last week working on my first 12 Fws. and i finaly decided to go for the "rock desert / canyon" bases. I also decided that my Fws would weare a jetpack and a extra shoulderpad for fluff reasons. They are testing out the new Fws armour (xv05.2)

04-06-2006, 00:31
oo thay look good, but you must have spent a bucket load on steathsuit back packs!

still, Very shiny all the same!

04-06-2006, 00:36
Not really, mail order did a mistake and charge me something around 0.25 pr pack.
I got 48 for around 30.

04-06-2006, 00:46
They are looking very nice. Makes me want to re-start tau, but ive just started getting rid of my stuff, and ive got so many armies on the go at the moment.

04-06-2006, 04:22
hmm, those pack give me an idea. Rappeling strategm anyone? :)

The tau look ace so far! Can't wait to see what happens with your tanks :)

04-06-2006, 04:57
The extra packs look kewl. Very heavy-duty. Like the Tau equivalent of Stormtroopers.

You did a good job on them, I can't wait to see how they turn out.

04-06-2006, 15:59
Lookin really good. Ha mail order so stupid!

04-06-2006, 16:34
Looks nice man.
What rules are you gonna use for the Air Caste pilots?
Ejected Pilot? Objective Marker? Stratagem?
anyways keep up the good work!

05-06-2006, 08:34
Ejected Pilot? Objective Marker? Stratagem?

Any of those are good enough, but i bet they will spend alot of time as objective markers.:p

22-07-2006, 15:40
Long time no See:p

Well my camera has been in for repairs so im sorry to say that i dont have any wip pics.

But i do however have finished pics:D. I have spent 1.5months on painting these guys and i hope you like them. I am wondering if im gone add some weathering and chipped armour on them.

The shas'ui is the one with white on his shoulderpads upper segemt.

22-07-2006, 16:02
Looking really good. They look awesome!

23-07-2006, 00:57
aye..lookin very sweet there. Can't wait to see the rest of your army!

24-07-2006, 11:34
Pics of some airbrushed tanks next please?

24-07-2006, 21:47
I am currently working on a XV89 and will do a devilfish next. It will be part airbrushed and brush as this is my first try with airbrushing;) . Pics of the XV89 soon to follow tomorrow.

25-07-2006, 20:31
very nice .. well done:)

22-10-2006, 00:45
Loooooong Time no see.

Well let me start with the exuces. I have over the last months moved from Norway to the UK (Birmingham) and started unni here. So not a lot of time for minis. To top it of i'm no longer in a posession of a 3k £ digital camera, so i have to make do with my phone.

Now the fun bit, my XV 89 is done, Almost. Just some touching up and squad markings to go. I have magnitiesd the weapons, his head and support weapons

My devil fish are now fully construcded and awaiting paint. In its construction i used a total of 50 magnets divided on the doors and drones. Im going to paint the interior. That is why the sides are not glued on, and i have not trimmed all the flash and mold lines yet.

(red cricels marks magnets)

Edit: Does anyone have any experience with vallejo paints and airbrushing cause im gone switch from gw now that i found a supplier here in brimingham.

22-10-2006, 12:52
I don't have any experience with airbrushes, but if you find anything out, would you mind posting, it would be really helpful. Cheers.

22-10-2006, 15:04
12x Phatfinders X

what on earth is a phatfinder? some kind of chav auspex?

seriously though, nice paiting. That battlesuit (even though I hate tau) is awesome.

22-10-2006, 16:15
why does that guy in the first pic look anorexic? it is a fire warrior isn't it?

22-10-2006, 16:27
I think it just got stretched a bit

22-10-2006, 18:42
Thats a typo:rolleyes: it should be pathfinder, a tau fast attack choice.

I mess around quit alot with my pics in photo shop(to make them look better:D ) so they might get streched or squisde a little bit, but the end result are the same.

i just made a mold of the devil fish lading gear, because i want it to be able to retract it, ill post some pics when a cast is finished.

Thanks for all then comments

23-10-2006, 15:18
I also decided that my Fws would weare a jetpack and a extra shoulderpad for fluff reasons. They are testing out the new Fws armour (xv05.2)

I've thought to do your jump-pack conversion on the FireWarriors and sculpt a new gun to use them as Vespid stand-ins.

I know the Vespid profile does not really fit the "weak" body of a Tau, nor does the weapon work without being a Vespid fluff-wise BUT i don't like the Vespid models.

I would rather use FireWarriors because there was a pic in the first codex showing a Ethreal jumping down the rear ramp of a landing craft with a XV25 looking like backpack-so it seems as if they are field-testing.

Do you think it's too un-fluffy?

23-10-2006, 23:54
I would say go for it mate!

I dont rellay like the vespid models eithere, so i think you are on to something.

The picture you are refering to is were i got my inspertation as well. Why shouldn't fire warriors be able to move as jump infantery. It makes perfect sense fluff wise and tactical wise, the tau way of war is basicaly hit and run.

Imagine fire warriors haveing a good fire position until close combat enemy(nids, orks, you name it) close in. Then they just fire up their jet packs and fall back to a new position.

Back to topic
Ill have some more pics up tommorow or wensday of the devil fish landing gear. sadly my drill bit broke today, so i need to get an replacment. Before i can work any more on my fish. I guess im of to my local hobby store for more drill bits and some vallejo paint.

03-12-2006, 14:03
Time for a up date.

I could not find the right colors in vallejo so no airbrushing of the fish. i have however finished painting it.

A pic of the interior

Diffrent weapons config

And finaly a retracteable landing gear

I spent a 3 days (painting time, two months realworld time) painting this, but because of unni i have not been able to post it up before now.

03-12-2006, 14:06
This is what i have been working on the last week

I have sculpeted new heads and necks for this stealth suits
what do you guys think?

( im sorry for any picture blurry ness they are all taken with my phone:cries: )

03-12-2006, 14:13
It's all been excellent so far, keep it up. But the last pics look a little strange. I don't think their bodies suit them, they look too outstretched (the chests) and it makes the heads look too far back. Despite that, everything is awesome, and I look forward to more updates.

03-12-2006, 15:35
look good, but to realy critique better pics would be better

03-12-2006, 17:45
Yeah I'm not a fan of the stealth suits, they're really goofy-looking. I think you should use fire warriors and give them new stealth suit arms and maybe change the legs.

03-12-2006, 17:45
the last pics look a little strange. I don't think their bodies suit them, they look too outstretched (the chests) and it makes the heads look too far back.
I agree with the quote; but do like the paint scheme and the overall look of the models, especially the Crisis Suit. Well done, and I look forward to seeing more.

03-12-2006, 18:30
The chest issue might be because some off the pictures in the last picture is croped wrong . Their chest is actually slimer then the orginale xv25 suit. It might also be the positions of the heads, i can see what you mean. But ithink they fit better in then the "no neck big heads" Xv25s.

Thx for the replies

03-12-2006, 18:36
your firewarriors look so cool am going to nick that idear for my farsight army:D

19-01-2007, 23:37
I love the colors and the dynamics of your mini's, but I have a question on the retractable landing gear, "How you do that?"

23-02-2007, 22:40
It's alive its alive.

Well sorry guys camera broke down so havent been able to post pictures, but there will be some tomorrow. Because the camrea repair place said it would be ready. So no more Phone pictures.

As a regard to the landing gear. Well i did it on one devil fish, but i dont know if ill do it on the rest. Because it keeps falling of mid game. Ill show with pictures tomorrow it involves magnets and greenstuff (nothing fancy though).

Curretnly painting 36 fire warriors and all the tanks are magnetized. Again pictures tommorrow.

PS: Can a very kinde Mod of the great Warseer =][= move this thread to the sci-fi section. Please....

Edit: I Almost Forgott the stealth suits are all painted up (pictures tomorrow).

24-02-2007, 21:19
Right first the pictures i prommised about the landing gear.

it is basicly a stamp cast of the "tau landing gear foot" wich there are glued magents on. Wich match magntes drilled in and fited around the landing gear well on the vechiel.
the only problem is that the small magnets are to weak and the gear keeps falling of.

pictures say more than words:

Then some pictures of the sthealt suits. (im sorry for some of the blur. Still trying to learn my new Digital SLR camera and i have the "shakes" today)

24-02-2007, 21:26
A better picture with some close upes added

All my tanks for the moment. I was undercoating them, but i did not have enough black.

At last my current painting project. I have done all the metal and are starting on the cloth today. I Hope to finish the cloth tonight and the whole lot in 2 weeks.
So there are going to be alot more painting wip pictures now. They will hopefully improve as i learn how to use my 1k Digital SLR with Macro lens. I might need to get a tri-pod as well:rolleyes:

on a side note: I won Winter War with this army to day. It has proven it self as a very effective army. So far i have 15 wins 3 draws 1 lost

25-02-2007, 15:35
Well i played with my camera after finishing the cloth on the Fire warriors. So here are some better pictures.
(Hm looks like my focus field is in the back and not the front, weird... )

Some close up of one of the fire warriors, all of them are painted to this stage now.

Next on the program is the brown armour. Ill see if i can get some done today. I just have to finish of some universety work (boring:cries:).

25-02-2007, 16:06
Those colours look so cool on the Tau miniatures!

I've quite a bit experience with airbrushing- esp with acryllics. So, drop me a PM if you have questions. I could answer them here too. I'll be limited b/c I'm finishing preps over the next 2 weeks on some major exams, but I'd be happy to answer some questions for you.

Rogue 7
06-03-2007, 03:31
Eh. Those stealh suits don't look very good. They basically look like you tacked on a head to the main stealth suit body. Can I ask why you messed with the original model? The rest of your models look sweet.

07-03-2007, 00:56
Well the heads are almost totale greenstuff fron scraths and that was my first attemptet. I do agree with you in some way.

But its not the heads its the neck and collar wich are wrong. And i might redo them in the future. im only gone say that my next idea involves a certain commander.;)

Please dont get me started on the XV25 orginale model. I personalay think they are one of the worst models in the Tau range. They are right there at the bottom with the vespids, space pope and his clercks.

I have just finished two layers of brown on my 36 Fire warriors. I might get some pictuers up tomorrow or the weekend. It is quiet stressing at the unni at the moment so we will see.

And the Inqueisitor i have sent you a PM, Cheers mate.

07-03-2007, 07:48
Looking very very nice at the moment...keep up the good work.

11-03-2007, 23:12
Update time.
I have only the final two highlights left of brown on my 36 fire warriors. this is the genreal state of them now.

and then on to something more exiting. A phat finder conversion i did today:

11-03-2007, 23:16
Right i just wonder if he would look good with two shoulderpads like my fire warriors. What do war seer think?
Some more pictures of the same phat finder only with shoulder pads.

11-03-2007, 23:22
And a secret project i have been working on now the last week.

Commander shadowsun is re-made into a burst cannon weilding sthealth suit. So what do warseer think?
The conversion wasn't too hard, but my dremel was very handy though.

And some close up of the greens.

Both arms and the head is not glued on. Just pinned with long pins. So i can alter the pose and his gun is not at the right level in some of the pictures.

21-03-2007, 00:42
Good stuff, shows exactly how dynamically these models can be posed!

Also good work on the GS! I still dont think im ready for the crazy world of magnets...pins and blu tac will do me but hey, cool stuff!

21-03-2007, 02:43
The inside of the devilfish looks like the bathroom from Saw

Very cool Tau

The inside of the devilfish looks like the bathroom from Saw

Very cool Tau

yep i was going to say the same thing... whats with the yellowing white?

also the X-25 new stealthsuits are a homage to really early gundam designs where the head and torso are fused. if only GW spent more time looking at mechs when designing the crisis series we might have something a little sturdier and interesting.

im hoping for some bigger battlesuit to be released one day.

the fire warriors look stunning, allthough i think id use this design as vespid fill ins and alter the gun slightly.

the phat finders are very cool, but i dont think they need the shoulder pads. you should make up a full squad of these and get a bit more coverage with the cloaks E.G cover thier shoulders on some of them.

the cloaks will look awesome with the same stripy camo the pilots have. awesome figures BTW.

however the open burst cannon looks terrible on the new crisis/shadowsun. cover those barrels in good ol green stuff and have a go adding the details to make it look more connected with other stealth burst cannons.

keep it up!

21-03-2007, 13:07
Nice army, loving the colours!

The stealths looks a wee bit silly though, as their necks are too long for having the helmets all the way up there..

Could we get a painting tutorial and colors for your Tau?

Oh! oh! and some step-by-step pics too if you can be bothered, would be ace :)

26-03-2007, 02:59
The inside of the devilfish looks like the bathroom from Saw
Thanks that was exactly the look i was going for. I wasnt really botherd to paint it so its white with a wash of chatachan green. Did't think it woul come out like that though.

however the open burst cannon looks terrible on the new crisis/shadowsun. cover those barrels in good ol green stuff and have a go adding the details to make it look more connected with other stealth burst cannons.

Well im going to use the plastic burst cannons from the xv25 set ithink its easier. Just need money :(

Could we get a painting tutorial and colors for your Tau?

Oh! oh! and some step-by-step pics too if you can be bothered, would be aceIll se what i can knock togthere dont expext anything anytime soon though. I have dead lines and exames comming up and that is my exscuse for not having any picture up dates as well. I have however finished the brown on the fire warriors.
