“A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”

Hello, this is the opening shot charting my progress of this wonderful diorama sculpted by Simon Egan and released by the good ol' boys of Frogeworld.

Still in the clean up stage and I'm mightly impressed by what the team have managed to achieve. The scene is dolorous an ending chime to the hope of the Great Crusade. I hope I can do it justice.

Are you going to expand the scenery on the base?
Also, I'm looking forward to seeing how this thing turns out. You're a big inspiration to my painting and I love seeing your take on this stuff.

Cheers for the replies guys. I'll reply to them a little later on - just got enough time to upload these and fly out to pick my GF up from work.

She won't be happy if I'm late.

Will it be our ideals that linger after us, or the terrible violence's we visit upon each other?

Looking at the photographs I am really surprised by how monochromatic the skin and armour tones are. I intend to add a little warmth to the skin tones and start hightlighing and shading the armour to add more depth.

Excellent progress so far and I must say I love the look of Abby's face. I'm guessing you're doing a OSL effect in style of what Horus is usually depicted with, with the internal light from the suit? I think that's a pretty neat idea :D

How about the display base, will you be mounting it on the oval base or do you have another sneaky plan?

Brother Garrod

Abaddon is going to look fantastic with the Horus style red lighting. Really cool idea. I forsee a lot of other people painting there Abadon and Horus when he is released just like this.

What shaw said, the horus like glow from within the suit is great, I'd never be able to achieve an affect like that so it's brilliant to see it being doen in your hands, like always phenomenal stuff

Right time for some replies;

Nocturn; cheers dude

PrimeMinisterSinister: cheers dude that means a lot. No plans to expand the base. I rather like that the base it is supplied with acts as a kind of display plinth. I'm not going to attach it and I've bee playing with the idea of buying a wooden plinth and adding a brass inscription.

10Gershom: I shall!

No-One; welcome aboard.

Kronos; cheers man. It was a big call whether or not I thought I could pull it off. It's still in the balance but I feel a bit better now I've all but finished abaddon's head (just have to dot the eyes)

shaw3029; that would be so cool if other people did the same. I'd like to think I started a trend then!

Brother Garrod; thank you

the damned artificer; cheers man! My sneaky plan is that I have no sneaky plan! I won't be attaching the resin display base to the plastic base but I may buy and engrave a wooden plinth to make it a little more special. I've been thinking of what to engrave as 'abaddon vs loken' doesn't seem quite epic enough for this scene. I have an idea, re-reading the wasteland by t.s. Elliot which I think would be appropriate.

A note on osl; I felt that this would be a huge risk to take at the start of the project but without risk you don't improve and I like working to the principle of never compromising or letting fear get in the way of an idea. I'm using the under lighting as a visual reference to Horus and it also helps that he looks bat **** crazy with the red under light. This is foreshadowing e madness that will consume the character.

There's also another reason why I've used the red. I want loken and abaddon to be associated with warm and cold colours. Abaddon's features are skewed with rage, transformed by red. For loken I've used blue as an undertone to the skin, representing the cold doctrine of the imperial truth.

Once again I have to say this kit is phenomenal. This may very well be the best sculpted miniature I've ever painted. The detail on the face and the little articulations of the models charging at one another is breath taking.

Lilloser.

Have never posted in your other threads before but have looked at some of them and been well impressed, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this turns out. As has been said the red glow from the armour a la the free poster from WD300 (I think?) is an awesome idea, should look very cool when this is finished. And I never really noticed just how nice the base is for the diorama. Quick progress so far, can't wait to see more!

A wooden plinth would be good, I have plans to make it into a more elaborate scenic base, but you'll see soon (I got mine today, and holy... It's even greater irl) and I think you need to find a proper grimdark quote, or make up one youself :D

How about "as the light of the great crusade diminishes..." And then have the brother fighting brother as a metaphor for chaos, or is that too cheesy? If such a thing is even possible in the far future where there is only war...

Fizzy
11-03-2013, 19:03
Or maybe another cheesy line.

"New beginning"
"Brother against brother"
"A new era"

Really cheesy ones maybe but thats my side of the coin :)

Before I suggest a name I'd just like to put in that I'm a huge fan of your work, lilloser - there is always an element of art in your craft that puts the 'painting' in 'miniature painting'; I love the inclusion of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, and your application of colour theory to suit the feel of the model is phenomenal. I've been following your projects ever since The Coming of The Host and I must say you have never failed to deliver!

When it comes to names...here are a couple:

1) Brother Turns On Brother (definitely not my favourite, somewhat too obvious and cheesy)
2) Know No Fear (encapsulates Loken's heroism, but there is an imbalance when we consider how central Abaddon is to the diorama too; the balance of the piece revolves around the conflict between the two)
3) I Will Show You Fear in a Handful of Dust (from The Waste Land, fairly fitting, I feel)
4) By The Waters of Isstvan I Sat Down and Wept (again from The Waste Land, substituting 'Leman' with 'Isstvan'...however I am not so sure that this will work as the colours of your piece are not the kind of desaturated, grey tone that would fit as melancholy a line as this. Abaddon is burning red after all!)

Keep up the amazing work, that's 5 stars from me!

the damned artificer
11-03-2013, 21:50
Just thought of a few others, also somewhat cheesy :P

"in the fires of war, a man show his true colours" this actually takes in account the same aspects as your colour theory for this piece.

"A man's worth is measured in his actions" not particular good, but it's very telling of Loken's loyalty.

And this is so cliché, but "in the far future there is only war" as it really is the catch phrase of 40K and who better to sport the quote than the main villain himself :P

lilloser2010
13-03-2013, 17:06
the damned artificer: Cheers for the suggestions man. I have thought of something, but doubt I can get the plinth done in time for the final edited photos. If I ever paint another I think I will engrave it with... I'll save the quote for the final post!

Aspect: Cheers man, that's really nice to hear. The host was my first real log and i'm glad people still remember it.

I really like that last suggestion...may have to reconsider my choice.

Fizzy: Cheese is always good. I'm an Abba fan so i'm ok with great big spoonfuls of cheese.

childsoldier: Hi Childsoldier! Thanks for the post, I hope that it shant be your last! The base is amazing as is the entire model. I feel like a bit of cheat getting such good feedback because the model really is doing the work for me.

ColdWinter: HEy dude, are you the same coldwinter over Bolter & Chainsword? Cheers for the compliment man, but the real star of the show is the miniature.

The speed at which you produce such incredible work is nothing short of obscene! Coming along really nicely and can't wait to see it all put together. The painting on both Abbaddon's weapons is fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how the red glow of the internal/infernal armour lighting looks once his head goes in.

Stunning as always; can't wait to see it pieced together! How did you paint the black on Abaddon? Was it with oil washes? I've been trying to achieve a similar effect with the basic citadel acrylics, but the tone eludes me every time...

It's a combination of acylic, oil and even pastel colours. The Forgeworld masterclass book as really helped me grow as a painter. My basic methodology stems from a zenithal basecoat, thin layers of colours with an airbrush, reinforcing those colours with glazes and highlighting by brush, then an oil wash to define everything.

I can't help but feel this is an awfully vague answer. If you're ever around south wales i'll show you a few painting tricks if you like.

- Beer ahoy! Feel free man, send it through the post! Git of it is I prefer wine (i'm a wine retailer in the real world).

As for what's next, well...

The immediate future has me post up pictures of Loken (already on my blog here (http://loserstudio.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/garviel-loken-luna-wolf-son-of-horus.html)) and Abaddon, then I'm planning on writing up a conclusion to this project (why i've used the quotes I have, cleaning techniques, rambles etc).

Next I have been commissioned to paint a Dark Angel army (strikeforce Animus) and Chaos set from dark vengeance. I've also been commissioned to paint up some Batman models by the same gentleman who is quite well known around these parts (really cool guy to work with).

Alongside that is some tau sculpting, Emperor's children Contemptor (all commissions) and on the horizon is a project that I think many of you will find interesting. I've been talking with a friend in america who wants a bespoke, money no-object, kind of army. It's pre-Heresy (real pre heresy), it's big, and exciting, and all tingly with anticipation awesome and...

...I'm not going to tell you what it is.

Will post up pics of Loken soooooooooon. Cheers guys.

Amazing work. Don't think you don't deserve the compliments, just bear in mind that if you've spent a long time looking up to other peoples work, (in nearly any enterprise) you may start to think paint drips from their fingers, and they dream of brushes ect, while in fact they are ordinary people, who happen to be really good at what they do, so don't be disappointed if you don't feel any different :).

A little controversial for staunch imperial but there you go.
