EDIT:

Closed this thread because I have decided to combine all three of my armies into one thread in te General 40K topic. Click the link HERE (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?392316-Shrine-World-of-Mother-Cabrini-Orks-Dark-Eldar-and-Space-Marines) to follow updates to my Dark Eldar, Ork, and Space Marine armies.

---

My brother and I first got into 40K back in 2005, when a friend donated his old models to us. We already had our minds set on collecting Tyranids and Marines, so we were more excited about the 'nid warriors, gaunts, and tactical marines that he had than the small Dark Eldar force. We decided to share the DE army, and did get a few models to build up the force a bit, but it always took a backseat to our Marines and Nids... and later on our Orks, Eldar, and Catachan.

For eight years, the DE were our neglected army. Even when the new codex came out, which made an enormous difference in their playability, we didn't get any new models for the army. Then, last Christmas, I got the Razorwing Jetfighter. This alone picked up my interest for our old forgotten army, and I started browsing through the codex and thinking of other units that might be interesting to have. I went back to some of the old models we had gotten for free way back in 2005, and started to touch them up to bring them to a higher quality.

Still, with work, life, and other interests in the way, I didn't have much time to do 40K related stuff. My brother, who is also my main opponent, was out of the state for months on end, so I wasn't playing games either. My time and motivation to do hobby-related things were both quite sparse. Then, 4 weeks ago, I broke my ankle. My job and my usual pasttimes require a lot of physical movement, so with my injury I was off of work and required to spend lots of time sitting down. And suddenly, my interest in the Dark Eldar army exploded. In the past 4 weeks, I've converted and painted new units, touched up dozens of old models, and made the DE army start to look like it's been shown some love. In the 4 weeks, I've brought the army from 2,844 pts to 4,215- and only spent about $60 doing so. I'm still on crutches and out of work for a couple weeks, and my brother is soon returning home, so I'll be doing plenty of hobby stuff in the next few weeks. Get ready for a lot of DE goodness!

And enough with the backstory. First, here's a picture of our original DE models, as we got them from our friend who donated them.

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/byron2.jpg

That little mix is what launched my brother and I into the hobby. Later on I'll show some comparisons between what the models looked like when we got them and what they look like now- a little basing and highlighting make a world of difference. But right now, I want to show some of the projects I've been working on recently to expand the army.

First up are some grotesques, which I always thought would be fun. I bought a talos/chronos kit and the bodies of 5 fantasy rat ogres. After assembling the chronos, there were enough bits left over to convert the fantasy rat ogres into some mean looking grotesques.

Ready to be put together:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/img_9940.jpg

Assembled and greenstuffed (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/img_1657.jpg)

And the first three painted:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/image_1.jpeg

I still have one that's primed and ready to paint, and one more that still needs to be converted (waiting on a 40m base). When I'm finished with all 5, I'll take some shots with a white background and better lighting.

And here's the chronos who was kind enough to donate his extra parts to make this possible (accompanied by a haemonculus)

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/img_0141.jpg

Another new unit I really wanted to try out was a Beastmaster with Razorwing Flocks. It seemed like a fun unit to play, but the current models are pretty expensive if you're looking to have a decent sized unit. After looking through our bits collection, I finally came up with an idea: a trimmed down epic Eldar Guardian with some old DE spikes attached to it. Looks something like this:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/img_1313.jpg

And with three on a base, primed and painted up, looks like this:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/image_2.jpeg

I'm still waiting on 5 40mm bases in the mail, but once I get those I'll be able to assemble and paint up the other 5 bases in no time. Here's my pile, all ready for assembly:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/photo.jpg

I have a few more things to share, including what the majority of the army looks like (need to take picture of basic warriors, wyches, etc). With the exception of these models I've just shared and the Razorwing Jetfighter, all the models in the army are OOP old school Dark Eldar. My goal is to make the old and the new blend together into one nice cohesive looking army. Until I get some shots of what the army looks like together, here are some WIP pics of other projects I have for the future:

Pain Tokens

Hope you enjoyed! I've been working at a pretty fast pace, so expect to see lots of new stuff soon (especially those razorwing flocks, as soon as I get the bases).

Cheers!

This is in the vein that I`ve been following the last two years. Basemodels are old, splice them with newer parts here and there and voila. Instant classic :)

Got some old DE lying around for a potential trade if you`re interested. Some warriors in plastic, a lot of metal specialist/heavy weapons, incubi, wyches and the old pain engine. And of course a lot of part from old and new DE sprues. PM me if it`s of interest :)

Other than that I`m subbing as I love this type of plog!

The old and new parts work together to improve the old models a lot. The jetbikes are also good to swap around. Gets a nice variety amongst them I found.

Very inspiring to an upcoming dark eldar player. :)

I have a bunch of old dark eldar warriors on sprues in a box in my basement, but haven't bought any of the new ones yet. My question is:Are there any special weapons or anything like that that would fit on the new models?

Thanks, but I'm actually good on models now. Have plenty of old warriors, Incubi, and wyches, and and old Talos (which I recently magnetized to have either chain flails or Liquifier gun- wil post pictures)

That would have been fun to combine, I actually have 10 old style reavers I got in an ebay Lot way back when. I didn't get to put any new bits on them, but I actually do like those old models the way they are.

I haven't gotten any new warriors, so I can't say how compatible they are, but it looks to me like the weapons and parts could be swapped. Personally, I like the look of the old DE splinter rifles and splinter cannons more than the current ones. I was thinking for a while of getting a box of new style Warriors and using them as Trueborn- they would pretty much look like fancier warriors with some nice weaponry- but I ended up just converting 8 of my current warriors to have unique helmets, some fancy back pieces, and unique weapons. Will of course be painting them to stand out a bit more too. Depending on how they turn out, I might still be interested in one day getting the new Warrior box to make some Trueborn, think it would be another fun mix of old and new.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm hoping to have my 2000 point list fully painted up by the time my brother comes home on Wednesday, hoping we can play some time next week. I'll take some army shots (and battleshots) then so you can see what the army looks like together.

The new ones are a little bit taller, both are compatible though, they mix very well together, some mixes you can't make, they'll be obvious when you have the models.

Honestly the only thing I regret about the old ones: very few gave them a decent paintjob, ANY model with a good paintjob looks awesome, best examples are the GW ones, look at any of their models old or new ,all their models have godo paintjobs and they look good.
One reason the new Dark Eldar look so good is the paintjob actually, very advance, however the new dark eldar with a crappy paintjob still look crappy.

If you're interested in Old & New Dark Eldar you might want to take a look at my blog. You had very few decent Old Dark Eldar blogs, but any well painted Dark Eldar army, was popular. Honestly I made a lot of people Start Dark Eldar because of my well painted old army. Right now I'm mostly working on New stuff, but I got plenty of old stuff I intend to paint.

BTW one last note on old & new: some of the old models are still better than the new ones => reavers and incubi are the ones most people agree on. The old talos is still seen a lot mixed with new Dark Eldar, clearly also a classic.

I'm hoping to see much more additions on this blog. Always cool to know I'm not the only fan of our old dark eldar.

I completely agree about the paint job. My brother got a lot of old tyranid models for his army, and although I thought they'd look bad at first, I had to admit I was wrong when he painted them up nicely. Blended right in with the army, and gave some great character to it. As far as the DE go, I also agree that I like a lot of the older models just as much as (if not more than) the new ones.

Well, I actually wrote up this post a few days ago, but I had my browser open overnight and when I posted it the next morning it said my session had timed out and the post was lost. Boo hoo. So here it is again, my apologies if it's a slightly abbreviated version of what I had originally wrote up.

Some DE warriors as we inherited them from our friend, in action:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Gukko/random/Warhammer/Battles/apoc1/genestealerfarseer.jpg

And now, touched up a little by some highlighting and base drybrushing:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Warrriors/img_0761.jpg
And another squad (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Warrriors/img_0763.jpg)

That funky looking weapon the crouching guy has is a shredder made from a Razorwing missile. I originally had two dark lance warriors, who used to go together nicely in an objective-holding warrior squad with the old codex. Now, with dark lance prices on warriros being so much higher, along with the fact you can only have one in a squad, I didn't have much use for them. So I converted them both to be shredders.

Some more basic things-

Wyches:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Wyches/img_0767.jpg

Incubi (with Klaivex/ Drazhar):
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Incubi/img_0769.jpg

Raiders (I have 4, one is not quite finished. Two dark lances, two disintegrators):

Skeleton Decorations (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Raiders/img_0783.jpg)
Usually the Archon's Raider (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Raiders/img_0784.jpg)
Other side (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Raiders/img_0787.jpg)

Reavers:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Reavers/img_0795.jpg

I do want to base those Reavers eventually, need to go gather some more sand first.

So there's an idea of what the rest of my army looks like. Wil be posting photos of the Talos (old style) and chronos next.

Finally got my 40mm bases in the mail, which means I can finish my Razorwing Flocks! Just assembled and based them, waiting for the glue to dry so I can prime and paint them up. My brother and I will be playing a 2000 point game soon, and I'll take some battle shots to show the army in action (every model should be painted up by that time)

And just so you guys have something to look at now, here's the Talos and Chronos. I really like having the old Talos and the new Chronos, I think it makes the two look more like two distinct units.

First up, the Talos. It's magnetized so I can give it either a liquifier gun or chainflails. I know, the liquifier gun doesn't look twin-linked here... I used the other one on one of my grotesques.
With chainflails:
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Talos/img_0774.jpg

And liquifier gun:

Side view (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Talos/img_0776.jpg)

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/Completed/DarkEldar/Chronos/img_0772.jpg

I never really liked the circular thing for the spirit vortex, so I used this other bit on the back that looks more like crackling energy vials.

The two together, with their creator:

Will be posting battle shots of the army in action soon!

Lol you've done so much in so little time, I mean, myself during all this time all I've managed to finish is a beastsquad (2 razorwing flocks to go, however all beastmasters and other beasts are finished)
It's very nice speed painting, Always find it a pity when people chose speed instead of quality (I'm 100% sure you can do even better than this) ,however this standard still makes a very nice army.
I would maybe work a little bit more on the highlights though, but then again this is speed painting.

Honestly seeing the sheer size of my own army, I think I'll also do some speed painting on certain units (especially thinking about my 500 warriors)

Most of the things I'm posting pictures of now were done a long time ago. The Warriors, Wyches, Incubi, Talos, and Reavers were all painted several years ago by the friend we inherited the army from. They were pretty badly painted though, seeing as the friend had the army from middle school or something. So the last few months I've been going to our old models and touching them up a lot, by adding drybrushing to the bases, highlighting the armor, completely redoing the colors of some parts, etc. Basically neatening the whole army up. So it's not exactly speed painting, just touching up a lot of old stuff (and a lot of these were even touched up months ago, I'm just posting them now to give a sense of what the whole army looks like). This is in no way me starting a new army haha, hence the "Expansion" in the title. :)

The new stuff that I have done from scratch in the last few weeks are the Grotesques, Chronos, Haemonculus, Beastmasters, and Razorwing flocks (will post pictures soon). I also have a few newer projects, like some of the special characters and turning old Warriros into Trueborn.

Anyway, I finally got to play my updated and freshly painted DE army of 2000 pts yesterday. Opponent was my brother playing Tyranids. Here are some shots of the army in action!

Here's some pictures of the Razorwing flocks. I came across a deal for 5 hellions for $8.50, which was just too good for me to turn down. It wasn't enough to make a squad of Hellions worth using, and I only had 5 Khymera, so I needed to find a way to use these guys. The Razorwing flocks always looked fun to me, so I thought this would be a great chance to convert some up. The official models were out of the question because of their price, so I started looking through bitz... and eventually I realized that some Epic Eldar Guardians, with their heads and one leg cut off, made great bodies for little birds (with the gun used as a beak)

http://www.galactic-intrigue.com/epicollector/Pages/2-Catalog/Eldar-Catalog/Eldar-Photos/Eldar-Warriors-Guardian4.jpg

And with some old DE spikes glued on, I had this:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/img_1313.jpg

Anyone with old DE warriors knows that they came with a TON of spikes and blades. I had to chop up a lot of old splinter rifles and even some spiky helmets, but eventually I had enough for 6 flock bases (with 3 razorwings per base). Here are 4 of them assembled:

And one painted close up.

And finally, on the battlefield (I finished painting them about 5 min before we started this game).

Ripping apart some Hormagaunts (this charge was a complete overkill, 36 rending attacks on the charge is quite nice)

So it's been a while since I updated this, ankle healed up and I'm back to work now so don't have as much time for painting. I've also been focusing on my Marines a bit more with the release of the new codex, but I did manage to get some new DE stuff done. I finished my Trueborn squad along with Duke, so I'll have to photograph those guys at some point. I also just recently painted up my pain tokens, and here's a picture of those:

http://www.majhost.com/gallery/Tok8/Warhammer/DarkEldarStuff/photo_3.jpg

The ones that are a simple single spike count as one token, the two in the front row with multiple spikes count as two tokens, and the skeleton in a cage counts as 3.

Here a unit of grotesques and haemonculi with two tokens:
