View Full Version : Mecha Squigs

So, another week, another new project. I don't have 'new shiny syndrome' as much as I have 'new shiny idea syndrome'.

I was considering my 40k Summer Project (bearing in mind I got Student Finance last week, so it wasn't going to last until summer, so I had to start now) and having looked at the list we created of 'cheap' armies, I had always wanted to do an Ork Nob Biker list, so I chose to go with that, modifying an old army list I had created, and then went to Google to look for some cool ideas for converting Nob Bikers.

And that was when I found a very cool concept. Someone had taken a Deffkopta and turned it into a Nob Biker by attaching Killa Kan legs to it. But what struck me was it looked like a Mechanical Squig. Using my Google Search-fu, I looked for other Mecha Squig concepts, and slowly formed a new army list, which you will see below.

Warboss with Warbike, Power Klaw, Attack Squig (140)
Big Mek with Warbike, Power Klaw (100)
4 Nobs, Warbikes, 2 Power Klaws, Bosspole, Painboy, Waaagh Banna (284)
7 Nobs, Warbikes, 3 Power Klaws, Bosspole, Painboy, Waaagh Banna (447)
28 Grots with 2 Slavers (104)
10 Grots with Slaver (40)
10 Grots with Slaver (40)
Bastion with Quad Autocannons (125)
Deff Dread with 2 Skorchas (85)
Deff Dread with 2 Skorchas (85)
Deff Dread with 2 Skorchas (85)
Deff Dread with 2 Skorchas (85)
Dakkajet with Extra Supa Shootas, Fighta Ace (130)

Total = 1750

This is the link to the website where I found the initial idea.

So, a few piccies of some work in progress.

First up is my Bastion. Now Orks are not ones for defensive tactics, but even Orks would see how useful Bastions are, so I reasoned why not have a portable one.

Eventually, it will have squig-like legs, which will be like the support legs on a crane, to stop it from moving. It will have a top turret, which will open up to reveal the Autocannons.

Next is my Dakkajet, lovingly converted from a Stormtalon.

I'm going to stick some small legs on somewhere, again to reinforce the squig image, along with some Ork accoutrements.

Then, my first Deff Dread.

Eventually, it will be supported only by the legs, which are both the propulsion and the Dreadnought CC Weapons.

My first issue is where to place the Skorchas on the Deff Dread (I am using Land Raider Flamestorm Cannons). Under the hull, or somewhere on the legs?

A further update. I have got most of the construction done on my Bastion, so I am about ready to start detailing on it.

And this is my first Nob Biker. The legs are not currently glued on to make it easier to paint (hence the bandy legged pose) but it is about ready for paint.

It now reminds me of a cross between the Gnome mount from World of Warcraft and Yoshi from Mario.

Love it mate! Great to see a plog with cool conversion and painting on show together (usually one or the other!).

Mecha-bastion is a great concept, will be interesting to see it finished.

It is definitely getting there, just spending time riveting at the moment!

Been making some more progress over the weekend. Now waiting on post for extra pieces to finish off.

First up is the Bastion. I have ordered a Battlewagon turret to go on top, and then shall be attaching the Forgefiend Assault Cannon thingies to the side of that for my AA Gun. I also have the front dozer blade from the Battlewagon which will be stuck to the front for its lower jaw. I will probably scratch build the upper jaw, but that will obviously have to wait until I get the turret.

Next up is my first Deff Dread. This is now virtually finished. I don't think I need to do anything else to it (except build three more).

That Deff Dread reminds me of some robot monster, but I can't put my finger on it.

Anyway, I have some further progress. I have now finished my Dakkajet.

I think I need to further thin the cotton wool smoke on the bomb, it is still too thick. I should also mentioned that the rotor blades are magnetised, so if and when it should crash due to my clumsiness, the blades should pop off rather than snap.

Heh, I like the idea of using magnets to prevent this kind of accidental damage instead of the usual thing of using them for modularisation or to make things easier to transport. Good show.
