All right. Let's assume a unit with a couple characters has been charged in the flank. For some reason or another, the characters don't want to Make Way. In the ensuing combat, the unit is able to hold, possibly due to steadfast, and reforms to face its enemy. The unit doesn't change its frontage, only changes the side it is facing. Per combat reform rules, you can't realocate a model already in contact base to base, but the characters need to be on the front of the unit.

Would the characters be placed in the front anyway, or would they end in the second rank?

Command always goes in first rank, so if you have full command and reform to 3-wide the characters go to second rank (different with some armies, but described in their army book)

You mean to say... As characters can go in the second rank when deployed 3 wide in a FC unit, they can do so if the combat reform doesn't change the frontage?
