View Full Version : Heresy Era Legio XVII, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth

[placeholder for more impressive intro to come later...]

Finished painting my first Word Bearer model, and now he's just awaiting a base (ordered from Scibor, to arrive within a week or two...). Fluff-wise this project depicts the time before or just after the start of the Heresy, with the Legion ascending to Chaos and accepting the Primordial Truth, but not yet fully taught in its ways, and still very much a Legion first and foremost in structure and approach (though, of course, the Word Bearers always were a bit not-so-standard-Legion in the first place).

No idea how this will continue, but it's not meant to be for playing, it's for the painting/converting/Heresy-fun only.

Looks really good! Will you still have grey armour for the non illuminated?
Proto.possesed will look awesome too.
Looking forwards to seeing more!

04-05-2013, 14:21
Did you base the name of Berserk for this army? :p

Love the model by the way!

Really funky painting, very Blanche-esq!

05-05-2013, 21:55
I love the red paint job, but what on earth is a Qliphoth?

06-05-2013, 03:57
Qliphoth is a Demon Realm in the Berserk manga. Pretty freaky and hardcore.

06-05-2013, 05:12
Berserk, I vaguely remember hearing about that somewhere. Fair enough, a suitable world/word.

06-05-2013, 07:45
Thanks for the comments guys!

I have no idea what this Berserk manga is. A "qliphoth" is a concept from daemonology and the jewish Kabbala, wikipedia it if you want the details, but the basics is that it's the concept of impurity or evil concealing and/or shielding the pure and true, and just as there's a "Tree of Life" there's also a mirroring "Qliphotic Tree".

Have ordered some mk III armoured Astartes, so that's what's up next :)

WIP of a Remembrancer:

He is still clothed in the grey of the original Word Bearers scheme, and will probably remain so to the end of his service.

Erigad Maveksen, Order of Remembrancers, Legio XVII

"I cannot begin to explain, no, perhaps I cannot even begin myself to fathom, the significance of this revelation, this paradigm shift. Where before, we recorded the deeds and conquests of men and Astartes, we now put into words the deeds and conquests of Truth. Our task was at once made both superfluous and important beyond our meagre intellects to describe." - Erigad Maveksen, Chronicles of Pilgrimage

One of many Remembrancers attached to the Word Bearers Legion, Erigad Maveksen was one of but a few to remain as their journey into the Heresy passed the turning point that was the discovery of the Primordial Truth. Attached to the 127th Chapter, the Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Maveksen was under the personal protection (and judgement) of Chapter Master Anatavar Xol. His loyalty to (what had become) his masters was never in question though, and he would continue the sacred task of compiling the unfolding history of the Chapter, and of the wider Legion, throughout the long years of the war that became known as the Horus Heresy.

Here Maveksen is portrayed wandering the harbour of Nocai Prime, an agri-world that was made compliant without shedding a single drop of blood, the secular organisation of the planetary government still harbouring seeds of the Old Faith in its foundations. During the Heresy, this planet would be one of a thousand such worlds important in providing food and other supplies for the mustering forces of the Warmaster.

Nocai Prime would however, unlike the majority of such worlds (which were too valuable for the recovering False Imperium to lose in the wake of the heresy), go on to meet a gruesome end at the hands of the savage Legio VI, the Space Wolves. Explanations for this act of atrocity differ, though many point to the danger of the True Faith spreading through the trade routes connecting the agri-world to neighbouring systems.

Yes, yes, I know you are expecting some power armour, but I'm still waiting for the delivery from Forge World, so meanwhile I have to make do with models I already have.

Found this Tech Priest tucked away in a box with some Imperial Army/Guard, and decided that he deserved a facelift (not to mention a conversion to the True Faith...).

Current state of work, almost all detail work left to do still:

Dude, another log?! =p
Good work so far, love the mace on the terminator, how did you do it?

12-05-2013, 19:51
Haha yeah mate, I know, I know :D As every time before, I'll say that I hope this is my last, but we all know how that usually ends right...?

The mace on the terminator is from the Dark Angels termie set, and if you're referring to how I painted it, I painted the brightest areas white, then yellow around them, then orange around the yellow. Finally some orange highlights on the surrounding black areas, and after letting it sit a while I went back and did some light blending between the different colours. Glad you like it!

12-05-2013, 21:20
I like the NNM on the tech priest axe. Love the blog so far!

This is a seriously cool project, I especially love the Blanchitsu style you've gone for & addition of so much 'fluff'!

Subscribed fo' sho'!

Tjena Beat....wow...dude your amazing...even if you are collecting a heathen army...keep it up kompis

14-05-2013, 15:56
Thanks guys! I really love Blanche's artwork, so managing to get that feeling across can't be a bad thing :)

All the metal areas on the tech-priest nearly killed me, but here he is eventually:

Magos Çamal-Diaz, Adeptus Mechanicus Cohort, Legio XVII

"Respected Lord Captain, I have detected a data infection in our communications network's access channels. No, chances of operational interference are zero percent. Our enemy, with statistical certainity, does not expect that the central communications hub is... How should I describe it in your crude language? They don't expect our central communications hub to be... Alive." - Magos Çamal-Diaz, Vox-recording, Kondalum IX Intervention

Magos Economis Çamal-Diaz was attached to the 2091st Expeditionary Fleet as a detachment to the 127th Chapter of the Word Bearers, and like most of his Mechanicus brethren in that formation, in a completely non-martial occupation. The revered Magos was the logistical brain of the entire Expeditionary Fleet, and would early on see the potential of the True Gods and their servants in increasing the efficiency of any operation that the fleet, and more importantly, the Chapter, would undertake. By the time chaos descended upon Mars, Çamal-Diaz had already declared for Lorgar, Horus, and the Fabricator-General, and was years ahead of his peers in other places concerning the blessed blending of science and sacred Warp-craft.

In time, his advances in this craft would allow him to relinquish control of the more mundane tasks of his occupation to other beings, his own intellect instead focused upon development and construction of weaponry, war engines and ships for the Word Bearers, and for the other loyal Legions. Such wondrous devices as the Aether-Flux Projector and the Epsilon Divina-class of frigates have been attributed to his incredible mind, and along with many other such inventions stand testament to the great worth of the Mechanicus to the XVII Legion during the dark days of the War.

14-05-2013, 16:10
Dammit, Warseer really needs a 'like' button. Not much else to say mate, you know I'm always a fan of your stuff.

15-05-2013, 07:09
Thanks mate! Hopefully I'll get the more exciting stuff (Astartes) in the mail today, so that should be up soon. Amazing work on the Three Hives Rebellion log by the way, a very worthy successor to your DE.

15-05-2013, 11:53
So that Tech-Priest is at it again, now with less power to his glowing bits.

Love your work, moar please.

16-05-2013, 15:57
Thanks Lurbadurm, glad that you recognized the origins of the Tech Priest! And yes, less glowing glowy bits this time, don't want them to distract from the rest of the model. And strong OSL somehow feels like cheating in making models look good...

Here's a blast from the recent past, have got a lot of stuff in my mailbox these last days so now I present to you the finished Chapter Master:

Chapter Mastar Anatavar Xol

Truthbringer, Honoured Illuminator, Doom of the Sandropeian Void-King, Favoured of Lorgar, Lord of the 127th Company of the Word Bearers

"Sometimes my thoughts rest upon Terra. Blessed Terra. Our Primarch, beloved of all, might hold Colchis in higher regard, as do many of our Legion. Yet, where would we be, but for Terra? As the Eye is for the warpspawn, so is Terra for our species. Not a birthplace, it is the birthplace. Our origin. Our womb. Our creator, if you will. For a brief time now, it has been cast in a veil, a veil of ignorance and false secularity, by a single madman. He had us, his Legions, tricked as well.

Oh, how it hurts me, how it slowly tears at the sanity my mind. Beloved Terra, birthplace of my own self, of my Primarch, of my Legion, and of my species. Wondrous Terra, we are coming for you. We will save you from the darkness of the lies and untruths. But be afraid. For first, we will have to utterly, irrevocably tear you down, brick by brick, and grind you to dust beneath our heels..."

- Chapter Master Anatavar Xol, excerpt from Sermons On The Qliphoth

Pictured above is the Chapter Master of the 127th Chapter of the Legio XVII, the glorious Anatavar Xol, blessed be his name. Born of Terra and one of the first inducted in the Legion, it paradoxically was not until the Primarch's renouncement of loyalty to Terra that Xol climbed above the rank of Sergeant, and was assigned the newly formed 127th Chapter as his own to lead. Dark rumours abound of this largely undocumented time, and it is said that as the Legion was purified from those of traitorous intent towards blessed Lorgar, Anatavar Xol, unlike most of his Terran brethren, became one of the Primarch's favoured through his deeds.

Here he is pictured in his personal suit of Cataphractii armour, altered to show his dedication to the True Gods. He wields Carnivore, a great mace gifted to him by Captain Stanavos Thal of the Iron Warriors, during the Sandropeian Campaign, where many bonds of friendship were forged in preparation for the coming storm.

While not a Chaplain, Chapter Master Xol nevertheless holds some leverage in matters of faith, having been of the True Faith for far longer than most of his Chaplain brethren. He is an ancient and respected symbol of the Legion, a vein of true ore that nobody expected to find, but that walked amongst the Legion all along.

16-05-2013, 21:15
And, well, as I said above, I got something fresh in the mail today..:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/photo-7_zps723975ac.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/photo-7_zps723975ac.jpg.html)

Reeeaaaaally looking forward to painting this guy! In fact, he's drying from an undercoat of Chaos Black right this moment. I'll probably go through at least three ordinary bolter-armed Astartes before doing anything more fancy like a Sergeant or such. Have had lots of variation already, so monotony isn't really an issue... Yet.

17-05-2013, 12:26
Absolutely lovely stuff

Now do another one :D

Astartes Legionnaire Kasaer Qo, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"All I ever wanted was the truth. Remember those words as you read the ones that follow. I never set out to topple my father's kingdom of lies from a sense of misplaced pride. I never wanted to bleed the species to its marrow, reaving half the galaxy clean of human life in this bitter crusade. I never desired any of this, though I know the reasons for which it must be done. But all I ever wanted was the truth."
— Opening Lines of the "Book of Lorgar", First Canticle of Chaos

Pictured above is Legionnaire Kasaer Qo, a Word Bearer legionnaire of relatively recent Colchisian origin. His equipment is typical of the assault-oriented 127th Chapter, with heavily reinforced MkIII plate for boarding actions and firepower-intense engagements, rendering the Astartes warrior within all but impervious to anything but concentrated support weaponry. The armour is painted in the recently adopted red colour of the True Faith, indicating his squad as one that has proven its devotion and is also no longer required for covert diplomatic duties to the Legions of the False Emperor. It is even possible that at this point, Kasaer Qo has already taken part in direct actions against those Legions.

A member of Tarbal tactical squad, Kasaer Qo will be expected at the forefront of any action. The 49th Assault Company is heavily steeped in tradition and glory, and is somewhat of an exemplar Company to the other, more recently formed, Companies in the 127th Chapter. The Daemonkin symbol on his left shoulder pad indicates excellence in service to the True Faith, and is seen as a sure mark of future promotion - if the Legionnaire survives long enough. Above Kasaer Qo's left eye is a symbol of a scorpion, denoting membership of the Scorpion Cult. The horsehair topknot similarly denotes rank within his Cult, which has no bearing on tactical or strategical matters, but constitutes an informal rank in other matters of less martial aspect within the Legion.

I'm totally absorbed by the really rich reds here and the background is very good + interesting as well.

19-05-2013, 16:57
Beautiful stuff. Hope to see more of this in future.

With regards,

19-05-2013, 17:54
Thanks guys! The red is actually pretty simple, though it does take a lot of time.

The slow painting war continues with another Legionnaire of Tarbal Squad assembled:

Due to the Horus Heresy Weekender and the new images of the heresy era Word Bearers from Forge World, I "had" to repaint some parts of the previous two models. Luckily it turned out completely as I had hoped (yes, Forge World did it again, everything Word Bearers-related they showed was awesome and hugely inspiring) and now I just hope that they don't make any more changes...

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_2422_zpsc8297010.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_2422_zpsc8297010.jpg.html)

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_2423_zps4c560d1d.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_2423_zps4c560d1d.jpg.html)

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_2424_zpsb82a12c4.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_2424_zpsb82a12c4.jpg.html)

I think that the grey areas balance out the intense red nicely, and that the gold in combination with the grey and red gives it that regal feel that I was honestly trying in vain to achieve before. Feels very Heresy era to me.

21-05-2013, 03:31
Your copy of TFH looks almost as well-read and battered as mine. Good show!

Please don't take this the wrong way, I have to say that it seems very ambitious to go for freehand in yellow on black. Would this be something you'd do for every model or would it be reserved for specialists? It must be a real struggle to get a decent look without layering it, and that would be very time consuming.

Still, have to say that the models themselves look great. Keep it up!

With regards,

21-05-2013, 07:45
Haha yeah, it's been read a couple of times by now, though only once from cover to cover. Usually I just pick it up and read some random chapter, it's definitely one of the best books in the series (along with Legion).

I find that the freehanding and layering is one of the most fun parts of painting a model, so I have no issues with it and will be doing it for every model in the army. :)

21-05-2013, 19:28
Can't see properly, are you doing some freehand-type swirl pattern onto the armour as well? Closer shots would be appreciated if you have time.

Keep up the good work bud, always interesting to see what you come out with =) Any thoughts on how to keep your motivation up this time?

22-05-2013, 07:42
I don't do any swirls on purpose, but my highlighting method for the red parts (wet blending on the armour plates) can probably make such patterns in places where I haven't been really careful. Not that I complain! :D

As for motivation... Nah, I don't know, if this project carries on to eternity I'm happy, if I find something else that I want to paint I'm happy with that too. I'm not really in 40k for the gaming (Infinity saw to that, that game system is everything I wanted 40k to ever be), so as long as I'm having fun painting these I'll probably continue. Actually I think just recognising that I don't have to reach a certain goal will help me stay motivated, paradoxically.

Current WIPs:

The unpainted one is the squad Vexilia bearer. Thinking that I have to get the Rapier Laser Destroyer soon to get my hands on that helmet crest for the squad sergeant...

24-05-2013, 15:30
The slow crawl of progress continues, at a pace much like the early crusade Word Bearers' conquests...

Astartes Legionnaire Dor Kavagron, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"The valley of judg'ment. The forest of olde. Where'd come the dread presence, so knowne afore? Thou, who hath risen the oracle of lyes, hast thou witnes'd a shepherd feed on his flocke? The virtues of loss. The hymnes of decay. Dost thou have faith now, o dearest friend? And dost thou now doubt Truth to be a liar, or dost thou doubt Lie in thy promythian rage? Whence came thine yoke of grande tradition, hast thou not seen the structure clear? A quenchlesse fire, a nest of trembling feare. A path that leads to perill, sorrow and despaire. Alas, 'tis the world without end."
- excerpt from Book Of Mgla, copied from original text found on compliant planet Groza IV.

Dor Kavagron was, like many of the members of Tarbal Squad, taken into the ranks of the XVII Legion after its discovery and adoption of the True Faith, and has therefore served only with true purpose, with no shameful past in service to the False God to burden his conscience. One of a select few amongst the company singled out as potential Mechanicum Acolytes, Dor Kavagron has replaced his Chapter symbol with a skull to symbolise his future service to the pursuit of divine and mechanical Knowledge, above any individual Chapter. The Legion number has instead been moved to his left leg armour, a practice relatively common in the ritualistic Radiant Qliphoth Chapter, where symbols and adherence to ritual code takes precedence over uniformity of markings.

The ornate backpack of this Legionnaire is no doubt a result of one trial or another imposed upon candidates to the Mechanicum, and has in this case resulted in a backpack design unlike any other in his Squad, made to his own aesthetic prefences and probably housing several effectiveness-increasing personal modifications within its machinery and circuitry as well. Apart from this, his armour and bolter are of designs common to the Chapter, and it is obvious that Dor Kavagron is not yet far upon the path to become a true Astartes Mechanicum Adept.

24-05-2013, 21:25
Oh Beat, you glorious bastard you. I'm still not sold on all the pre-heresy love suddenly popping up but as ever you are pulling something special out here. More dammit.

26-05-2013, 18:31
Haha thanks mate! You know you want to make a little heresy era army... ;)

28-05-2013, 09:35
Figured I might as well add my Saturnine Imperial Army to this log, because... Why not?

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/ImperialArmySaturnine27th_zps641cb72c.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/ImperialArmySaturnine27th_zps641cb72c.jpg.html)

Saturnine Fleet, 28th Infantry, II Company

Squad X-X, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2 and attached Exterminator 1A

"Before evening, will your mouth be distorted into a last unfinished yawn? Like open-mouthed cattle, blooming with appetite and lust for life. Have you got a year or an hour left to pollute the earth with your debris? Angels descend, graves open; the war host of Saturn is come."

Traditional message broadcasted by the Saturnine Fleet to enemy forces upon arrival in theatre of war

As it expanded outwards from Terra, the armies of the Imperium encountered the Saturnine realm. Even as its rulers signed the peace treaty with the newly born Imperium, it was torn apart by a civil war caused by anti-Imperial sentiments. In what can be called the first true compliance action of the Astartes Legions, even if it was aided by the government-loyal Saturnine Fleet, the Legions annihilated the secessionist forces hiding out in Saturn's rings. From then on, the Saturnine fleet fought alongside, but never as a true part of, Imperial forces along the entire frontier of the Crusade. Records have been found, though many are surely missing still, of Saturnine presence in (amongst others) the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 36th, 63rd and 201st Expeditionary Fleets. The low numerals are worthy of note, as an indication of the Saturnine forces' early dedication to the Great Crusade and the Imperial cause. Of course, there are exceptions (the 250791st Expeditionary Fleet being the most extreme, perhaps), and these probably consist of regiments raised because of population overload or unexpected military demand. It seems that most of the new recruits raised were transported to the established regiments, a costly procedure illustrating both the Imperium's respect for the Saturnine Fleet, and the huge capacity and resources of the Saturnine Fleet itself.

During these times, the primary recruitment grounds for the Saturnine Fleet were the moons and asteroid rings of Saturn, housing a civil population comparable to a grade C Hive World. These mining stations, orbital defence platforms, monitors, signal stations and so on form a recruitment base much in the same way as the civilian population once did. Unwanted children, personnel deemed superfluous by budget cuts or reorganisations, staff found guilty of minor charges, and many more; All are welcomed into the Saturnine regiments, and under a harsh regime trained into the peak efficiency Saturnine Fleet formations that tradition and their glorious history demands them to be.

With the heresy of the primarch Horus, and the upheaval that followed, the Saturnine Fleet's old oaths of loyalty would be tested once more.

I really like those Word Bearers! The extreme edge highlighting makes them glow in a good way. The Lord's mace is just brilliant!

Monsterzonk :skull:

31-05-2013, 11:40
Thanks, happy you like it!

Here's the current state of WIPs. All the reds done on the third tactical marine, the fourth one is built and ready to be primed (and I'm looking forward a lot to painting it!), and besides that it's the...

Yep, I caved in. Will be painted after the first five tactical marines are done, I think.

(edit: Hmm. Or he's a Chapter Champion. Can't decide really)

Gal Vorbak, definately. Just look at him, hes bleedin hench compared to the regular Joes. Gal Vorbak or I will personally come over to Sweden and punch you in the hobby.

That is a beautiful phrase.

Loving the work. I too second the Gal Vorbak option.

02-06-2013, 09:53
Haha I think you're right, guys :D Funny, I was thinking that the online crowd would demand something more possessed for the Gal Vorbak. I think it's a reasonable fit though, either as Gal Vorbak before the final possession stage during Istvaan V, or post-Istvaan V in non-possessed/marine-dominant mode. Opinions from the fluff nerds?

Another Tactical Legionnaire finished. Now I've only got two left, one of which is the sergeant, and both of which I'm really aching to paint, so hopefully these will be quickly done in time for the Contemptor's arrival. You know how Contemptor Dreadnoughts are. If you don't assemble and paint them immediately, they get all grumpy and start ********** s*it up in your apartment...

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

Honestly? I don't give an Octed damn what our Legion's "core beliefs" are. I kill people. I am a blade. No, erase that. I am an Emperor-be-damned chainaxe, no, a chainfist, a huge damn chainfist, like, Titan-sized, you know? Warlord-Titan-sized. A Warlord-Titan-sized chainfist, coming to rip the throat out of the shitlicking Emperor and any baseborn fool between me and that throat. Now, THAT is my core belief."

- Legionnaire Xreet Kchoro to unknown Remembrancer, Chronicles of the Radiant Qliphoth, Appendix XIV-10

An older Colchisian Legionnaire, Xreet Kchoro has been with the Radiant Qliphoth since its beginnings. From the fleshworld of Taaves to the recent massacre at Nabilus 6, he has carved out a bloody reputation, marking himself out for righteous fury and a frenzied offensive dogma in battle, standing out even amongst the assault-oriented brothers of 49th Assault Company. Yet curiously, his interest in matters abstract and of religious nature is fainter by far than most in the Legion, leading some to joke about the "World Eater of Tarbal". Always arguing for melee-oriented loadouts before deployment, it is not hard to see why, as the thirst for blood and close quarters death flares in his old eyes.

Understandably, this approach and his unusual contempt for matters of the Faith, new or old, has given him as much respect (often through nothing but simple fear) as it has given him enemies, and it is recognised by most that he will never rise above the rank of Legionnaire. Nevertheless, Xreet Kchoro's Sergeant has bestowed upon him the honour of bearing the symbol of the Octed into war, and even though he is uncaring about the Faith, nevertheless Kchoro recognises the inherent blessing that it symbolises.

I reckon those DV Chosen fit well as post Istvaan marine-dominant Gal Vorbak - subtley different to a standard Marine without being over the top and daemonic. I imagine by the time they get to the events of Betrayer the Astartes has learnt even more control and can hide the daemon better, but that mini is perfect for a post-possession come-down look.

02-06-2013, 15:55
Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Next challenge will be deciding how much "possession" will show through in the paint job, and how much will be made to look like metallic ornamentations.

I'm spoiling myself today and doing literally nothing useful at all, except drinking coffee and painting stuff. So, in a flurry of paint and curses, I finished the fourth marine and constructed the Sergeant:

And mandatory fluff update for the finished Legionnaire:

Astartes Legionnaire Alvar Vetnu, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

Shadows of the infernal coil, blood of the faithful boil. For those who stand before us: Oblivion awaits! Bow heads, prepare graves! Tarbal! Tarbal!

Sergeant Tias Tarsas, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"Horus is a fool. Fortunately, he is not the one in charge, whatever his pups might believe."
- Sergeant Tarsas, personal log, file 10566, mark 1:01

Above is pictured a demisquad of Tarbal Squad. Each full-strength Tactical squad is normally split in up to four demisquads for small scale operations, where the brute power of the full twenty Astartes in the squad is deemed unneccessary. Unusually, these five squad members feature not only sergeant Tarsas, but also his informal second-in command, Legionnaire Qo, and the bearer of the squad Icon, Legionnaire Kchoro. This makes it highly probable that this demisquad composition is meant for a ceremonial duty of some kind, perhaps as an honour guard to the company captain, or an external guest.

During a certain time just before the Great War, and at its very beginning, there was a frenzy of diplomatic activity both within the Legion and to other Legions and entities of the Imperium. At this period, a surprisingly large portion of the XVII Legion's Astartes would be given over to something as unremarkable as escort duties for ranking officers and visitors, something which makes the high rate of conquered worlds by the Legion in the final stages of the Great Crusade all the more impressive.

Nevertheless, dull as such duties might be, the Legion's warriors knew their import in the greater scheme of things, and so made their Primarch proud even in these unexciting matters.

Aaaaaaaand I'm on a roll. Still haven't got the Contemptor, so right now everything is finished except for a Davinite Priest. Oh, and I bought (and read) Aurelian some days ago. Suitably awesome book even though it is short, well worth the money!

Seltharien Voct, Gal Vorbak

Chosen of Lorgar, Warrior of the Serrated Sun, Companion of Argel Tal, Kinslayer, Foereaper

Many call us a sinister Legion, some even call us boring. This is not true. We make jests, we laugh, we compete amongst ourselves for glory and for the hell of it. Just like you. That we appear solemn to others is true, however, and I apologise on behalf of my brothers. I admit it, we are not the most enjoyable to fight alongside, that honour probably goes to the Warmaster's Legion, for their lust for battle and skill in it, or to the chosen of Sanguinius, for their warmth of heart and easy friendship. Perhaps even, though it pains myself to admit it, to the Ultramarines, for their pragmatical approach and willingness to learn. Hell, if I were you, I'd probably even fight alongside the pack of Russ rather than us, their way of fighting make for great stories at least.

We might well be a sinister Legion, we are outwardly probably boring. We chant as we go to battle, and I admit, that is a curious custom. Yet which Legion but us, and us alone, have met the Gods, and talked to them? Which Legion but us, know their names? Which Legion, I ask, bear the burden to save not only the Imperium, but all of Mankind?

I literally bear the essence of a God within my chest. I don't know about you, but for me, this seems a fair trade for lacking some outward pleasantries.

- Seltharien Voct of the Gal Vorbak, Legio XVII to Alpharius, Legio XX, unknown time and place

Some of the Chapters of the XVII Legion are graced by the presence of one of Lorgar's Chosen, the Gal Vorbak. Some are present only temporarily, while some are permanent attachments to further the glory of the Chapter. The Radiant Qliphoth can lay claim to such a permanent arrangement, with the presence of Seltharien Voct. One of the survivors of the Orfeo's Lament, he commands respect, awe and fear in equal measure throughout the Legion, his deeds eclipsed only by a few others of his kind and of course the Primarch himself. For these blessed beings, formal rank is done away with, and through their divine wisdom and fearsome skills at arms they aid the Legion in battle.

Some of the Gal Vorbak have been gifted intricately crafted artificier-made armour, in Setherial Voct's case with leering aetherkin faces blended into the ceramite and banding of his armour plates. A great horn of iron crests his helm, reminiscent of his war form. Thus, even in between battles, the Gal Vorbak are a constant reminder of the incredible power now in allegiance with the Legion, and the purity of their cause.

Lovely stuff as always mate. The demi/hemi/quemi (?) look great, and the intricate bases only help make them stand out - rare to see such a bright clean base on a 'dark' army, but it works really well. And hell yeah, Gal Vorbak. He looks ace, end of. I need me one of those models. Looking forward to seeing more and going toe-to-toe with you in a Contemptor-off ;)

11-06-2013, 23:48
This is a great plog. Your attention to detail is excellent and the NMM is very well done. I have yet to read through all the fluffy bits, which I always enjoy, but I'm sure I will be back through here a few times.

12-06-2013, 15:33
JackDaw - Thanks mate! I usually go for bright and clean bases on dark models, and dark bases on bright ones. I find that doing otherwise tends to blend in the model with the base, when you really want it to stand out (unless you're doing historical stuff, for example) and also creates interest in the model, by itself creating a kind of story and tension. Soooo, you got a Contemptor incoming, eh? Really looking forward to that! Mine arrived today, proof below :D

AtmanAbecedarian - Thanks, and welcome to the log! Hope to see you around then, and as my updating is quite slow, feel no stress about the fluff-reading ;)

And the aforementioned Contemptor, preparing for a wet photo shoot for Sports Illustrated (or something...):

I'll just leave that here...

Really nice stuff here, consider me subbed!

15-06-2013, 09:58
Felweather - Thanks, and welcome to the log!

Put some paint on the Contemptor, finishing one part at a time to maintain sanity.

15-06-2013, 21:05
Absolutely love the Death Guard Contemptor, and with your re-purposing paint-job, it'll look amazing!

17-06-2013, 13:57
Oh he is looking sweet, very nice work there mate. Love the natural pose as well, it's not too forced or 'rawr Imma dread'.

17-06-2013, 14:31

That's simply amazing.

I love the red you use man, really unique.

Your lens flare as well...*Dribbles*

I think your Chosen with Power Axe is my favourite, the head just really stands out. Very unique, very well done.

17-06-2013, 14:39
Fantastic colour scheme! I really like your painting style. Realistic, dirty and gritty.:)

27-06-2013, 20:20
so i'm loving this plog! makes me want to do a word bearers list instead of emporer's children . . . decision, decisions.

keep up the great work!

29-06-2013, 23:08
This is by far and away your best work. Sublime. Positively sublime.

04-07-2013, 21:31
Hey guys, huge thanks, you flatter me! :D

These are taking a break though during the summer holidays (unlike me, as I'm in my hometown working my *** off), while I'm painting some Infinity stuff instead and generally being busy doing other stuff. I'll get back to them soon enough though!

06-07-2013, 21:08
Loving the paintjobs and the fluff for each model!

19-07-2013, 12:30
Love all the stuff on here, can't wait to see the finished contemptor. Would you mind sharing your recipe for the grey? Currently building stuff for a pre-illumination WB force and can't decide on a scheme.

22-07-2013, 21:43
This is beyond amazing...... it literally makes me want to not continue because I can not do this!

24-07-2013, 09:43
naryn - Thanks man!

Idomeneus - The grey is very easy, jut paint on a coat of Vallejo black (can't remember the exact name, their black paint. GW's black should work just fine) and then while it's still wet paint on any codex grey equivalent (I use a Vallejo grey... "Cold Grey"?) so that it mixes with the black and turns into a gradient. Just paint in more and more grey paint where you want the gradient to be more grey, and add more black if it turns to bright. Like a mixing pot but on the model ;)

Laerath - Happy that you like the models! Just ask and I'll explain as best as I can, none of the techniques involved are that advanced or even hard - a few are almost downright cheating, and some are time consuming, but that's all :)

How do you paint the bases man, I'm loving that sand colour :)

26-07-2013, 11:35
This is really cool, loves me some red traitors and forgeworld bits!

26-07-2013, 14:04
Lovely work on the painting, really really impressive, you deserve lots of kudos lads :)

28-07-2013, 09:49
Huge thanks guys! Happy to see the lack of recent updates doesn't scare you away just yet :) As for the bases, they are painted with bleached bone, then heavily washed with devlan mud, then highlighted back up with bleached bone and skull white. Finally thraka green is washed where I think there should be some mold and decay, and leviathan purple is washed on any side-facing surfaces as shadow.

Studio Dave
14-08-2013, 09:02
They are awesome man :D I love how each model has it's own background, even if it's just tiny :D how do you paint that red?

05-10-2013, 10:33
Thanks man! The red is a layer of mournfang brown, into which evil sunz scarlet is mixed while still wet towards the edges/light source (above, generally), and then blazing orange is mixed in in smaller quantities. Edges are lined with yriel yellow, extreme edges with screaming skull, and then the whole thing is washed with baal red followed by leviathan purple on the areas facing down and in deep recesses.

And finally, some kind of update! It isn't big, but it's something!

Very good paintwork and basing on the miniatures. Forgeworld gets a lot of free advertisment here on Warseer, don't they? ;)

That colouring is just breathtakingly spectacular. I am a huge fan of this work, consider me subscribed and keep the good work coming.

08-10-2013, 09:55
You've excelled yourself on the Contemptor. Easily one of the best paint jobs i've ever seen, and you've not even finished it yet!

Agatob, Revered Scholar-Warrior

Nay-sayer to Lorgar Aurelian, Nemesis of the Sandroped, Voice Of Reason, Foebreaker, Conqueror of Valata Secundus

Be a craftsman in speech that thou mayest be strong, for the strength of one is the tongue, and speech is mightier than all fighting.
- Ancient Agatob, excerpt from opening speech in the Garotelios Debates

One of the very first recruits from Colchis after the discovery of the Legion's Primarch by the expanding Great Crusade, Agatob was born and raised by one of Lorgar's chief lieutenants in the planetary civil war. An orphan as it ended, Kor Phaeron himself saw to it that the child got the upbringing that his family's deeds deserved, but their money could no longer buy, and so was raised in one of the primary monastery schools. Having already sparred (albeit playfully, of course) with no less prodigal warriors than Kor Phaeron, Lorgar and Erebus at the tender age of ten, Agatob was no weakling, but a true aspirant warrior monk. His admission to the Legion was a matter of course, and completed the trials and his conversion to Astartes with honour and health intact.

Perhaps his attitude of complete and utter disregard for authority comes from that time of fighting with a wooden sword those who others would bow before and call demi-gods, but his voice was always one of reason, friendship and respect, not of rebellion, envy or distrust. For this, many of his brethren regarded him as somewhat unstable and always feared some terrible reprisal from his betters, but Lorgar and the other commanders of the Legion just laughed heartily and discussed whatever merits or flaws the arguments of Agatob could have.

As he rose through the ranks, his ability to reason was marred with the strength of will and resolve to command and make quick decisions, and it was only natural that he soon was in the inner circle of his Chapter's command, leading his own Company to war.

Perhaps his fortune ended at what was at the same time his most glorious moment, the final siege of Valata Secundus, as he slew the self-proclaimed King and his entire bodyguard, but was himself brought almost to death in the process. Interred afterwards in the cold tomb of a Dreadnought, he calmly accepted his fate. He still aids the Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth in war as in council and debate, though the tragic process of decay of the mind that is the hallmark of Dreadnought interment is already there to be seen, especially sins Agatob insists on remaining awake for as long as possible, even between battles, unlike many of his brethren.

Nowadays, there is a sad undertone to Lorgar's warm laughter as he argues over philosphical points and counterpoints with one of the few to ever call him "childhood friend".

No offence is intended towards anyone by the illustration on the banner. It is to me completely devoid of out-of-universe religious meaning.

My intention is that the person depicted on the banner is our dear Agatob before his interment in the Dreadnought, and that the Word Bearers religious tradition would make this style of painting a natural choice, as he is considered, more or less, a living saint, or at least an incredibly holy man. It is the Word Bearer-y version of such art as can be found on for example the Dark Angels' banners.

Apologies to any offended parties. It really is not my intention to step on people's toes.

Gorgeous stuff as always mate, just gorgeous. That Contemptor looks lovely - I'm not normally a fan of banners, but on this occasion....yeah....spot on.

09-10-2013, 22:56
Is that Chaos Jesus on the banner?

10-10-2013, 07:32
Fidel Cashflow - Thanks man! :D

JackDaw - Cheers mate! You're happy, I'm happy!

matt_17 - Thanks!

Orky Art Boyz - Any resemblance to persons real or fictional is purely coincidental...

By the way, next up is - yes you know it - MOAR TACTICAL MARINES! And a Praetor, hopefully. Since, eeehhh... The old one has gotten demoted to Chaplain, which really suits the model better IMO.

13-10-2013, 09:27
Some fresh additions, one getting ready for some paint and one fresh off the assembly line. These will take squad Tarbal to an amazing seven members. The long painting war continues... ;)

Firstly, thank you for your lovely comment on my own Plog, mate, it really did did make my day. :) Secondly, thank you for commenting on it at all as it has led me back to your own wonderful work. I don't often check the Chaos boards, so I often miss incredible stuff like this. I love your method of painting, it's so vibrant; Really, really striking. Each model has obviously been painstakingly crafted, and I, as you could probably guess, love that each model has their own unique character. Take Agtaob, for example; it's wonderfully tragic that the more he has tried to stay awake, to cling on to some vestige of the life he had, the more of himself he has lost. It really enhances the painted models having that little bit of history to accompany them. :)

14-10-2013, 03:57
The Radiant are looking fantastic! Agatob looks fantastic and the fluff behind him adds much more.

Definitely looking forward to another group shot.

10-11-2013, 15:58
Aaaand we're back.

Figured I'd turn my next tactical marine into a short tutorial, as some people have asked me how I paint these.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3980_zpsef951591.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3980_zpsef951591.jpg.html)

1. First I go over all red areas of the armour, painting each area in turn. First I paint the area with Mournfang Brown, into which I add primarily Evil Sunz Scarlet and a little Troll Slayer Orange to achieve a slight blend towards the edges and on areas where light from above would hit. In the shadowed areas there is really just mournfang brown.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3981_zpse5110347.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3981_zpse5110347.jpg.html)

2. I then just add flat Yriel Yellow as edge highlights.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3984_zps19e8059d.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3984_zps19e8059d.jpg.html)

3. Then I fully cover the red areas of the armour in a Baal Red wash.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3985_zpsf3d3666c.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3985_zpsf3d3666c.jpg.html)

4. When that has dried, I wash with Leviathan Purple in the deepest shadowed areas and recesses. The red is now done.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3987_zps3c07e9f2.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3987_zps3c07e9f2.jpg.html)

5. The metallic areas are painted by blending Vallejo Black and Vallejo Cold Grey (Chaos Black/Codex grey/Fortress grey equivalents work fine as well) and adding in some White Scar on the absolute edges.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3988_zps23cb539b.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3988_zps23cb539b.jpg.html)

6. To make this blend in with the rest of the model better, and add some wear and tear, I use the same mixing pot as before and add in brown and orange to the grey/black mixes, painting it in places where it "fits".

10-11-2013, 15:59

7. The dark grey areas of the armour are painted with the same grey/black colours, but a much darker shade. I usually just paint on the black and then while it's wet I add in grey directly onto the model where the light would hit, and then just blend it together directly.

8. Gold details are painted with a Mournfang Brown -> Yriel Yellow -> White Scar mix, starting with pure Mournfang Brown, adding in Yriel Yellow until it's almost a pure yellow, and then adding in White Scar, but not enough to turn it pure white.

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3991_zps0fab1b58.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3991_zps0fab1b58.jpg.html)

9. Finally script is added in lines of Cold Grey. Done!

Astartes Legionnaire Hatu Vishara, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

When an empire falls, what remains? Everything and nothing, my friend. An empire is but an abstract concept of governance given practical shape. Like any concept, it is open to discussion and debate. Here; My bolter, "Discussion". Hang on for a second, I'm sure I have my blade somewhere here..."

A long serving member of Tarbal Squad from the time the Legion was grey and naive, Hatu Vishara has always held the role of mood lightener, a martial kind of joker who thinks nothing of throwing the skulls of vanquished warlords at his fellow Astartes for a laugh. Some of the more dour members of the squad consider him a nuisance at best, until something unexpected happens to the battle plan and Vishara inevitably turns it to their advantage, showing the true breadth and depth of his vast lake of intelligence. As the smoke clears, he stands there again, an undeniable paragon of bloodshed and war, until a shadow falls from his face and that maliciously grin of a genocidal comedian distorts his features in laughter again.

Phenomenal paint job, yet again. Nice walk through, too.

10-11-2013, 17:13
Superb work, mate, and thank you for taking to time to do the tutorial. :)

10-11-2013, 22:52
Thanks guys! Not my best model this far, but that's what you get for laying off the brushes for a month or two basically. Next up are four more Tacticals. You have been warned... :D

11-11-2013, 05:27
The pose and that helm with mk3 armor looks sweet! The paint job tops it off too!

I'm also going to be studying your step by step painting guide and try to use it for purple.

11-11-2013, 20:43
Glad to see this back mate, finally gives me a reason to come to the Chaos section again. And kudos on the tutorial, you've way more patience than me for doing that kind of thing. The new Tactical is great as well, yay for more bleakly humorous Astartes :)

13-11-2013, 22:09
Hushrong - Thanks mate! I'm having really fun with the different helmets GW and FW produce. They add some nice variety without going all out chaos (...) .

JackDaw - Cheers! I was never away really, the log got taken down for a while by the mods. Now the issue's been cleared though and everybody's happy!

Anyway, something completely different this time around. I present "The Thanatos at anchor near the Adriatic Clouds", painted with acrylics on a 70x50 cm canvas:

13-11-2013, 22:45
Now that is niiiiiiice.

14-11-2013, 14:43
that is really cool dude, and gives the army much more depth when you also see their ships. really cool.

14-11-2013, 21:59
Dude, you painted that ship?!?! Absolutely amazing :D

14-11-2013, 23:47
Mate, that is really, really good. I love the subtle hints of colour you've infused into what would otherwise be a picture of a black ship against a black backdrop. The Nebula is beautiful. One query though, is the ship in the backdrop supposed to be much bigger than the Thanatos? It's just that it's running lights are larger despite being farther away. :)

15-11-2013, 07:44
ashc - Thanks! :D

thrawn - Happy you like it! Not really sure yet if the ship really belongs to this army, or to a future one (yes, this is how wallets die...) but for now it does I suppose!

Studio Dave - I did indeed, huge thanks! :D

Laborious - Thanks mate! That is indirectly really constructive criticism, because that ship (to the upper left, right?) is supposed to be much closer to the viewer than the Thanatos. I have probably messed up the perspective in some way, I just have to figure out exactly how. It's damn hard giving a sense of distance in space as well, when you lack all common size reference objects (trees, grass, people walking around, street lights etc). The size of the lights as well as the size of the windows are supposed to give it away as being closer, but it is not really enough I feel. There's also two smaller ships in the distance which are supposed to be identical to it, but they honestly aren't really identical, which also makes it harder for the eye to "build" the correct distance.

15-11-2013, 13:10
Aha! Then it has worked! My eye noticed the discrepancy with the lights and windows, but because it was smaller just automatically assumed it was supposed to be further away and so jumped to the wrong conclusion. I think perhaps part of the problem is that I'm not particularly well versed in BFG and so I'm ignorant of the size differences between most of the model range, so to me that silhouette looks like it's another battleship and so should be of a size with the Thanatos. If it had been something more recognisable to a layman like myself, such as one of those beak-nosed frigates or something, I think it would have been more readily apparent. :)

To be fair, I thought it was meant to be in the distance and I have a Chaos fleet :P I think one way to get around the perspective problem would be maybe to lighten it (to imply its closer to the flight source). Despite that I think it's a fantastic piece, and a really nice supplement to your great army!

16-11-2013, 08:59
Nice painting, both in 2d and in 3d!
How big is the army so far?

16-11-2013, 17:17
That's a great painting and makes me miss BFG.

17-11-2013, 13:13
Horus Aximand - Yeah, I'll try it in Photoshop and see how it works out! Thanks!

totgeboren - Thanks! Took an army shot to answer your question, see below :)

Hushrong - Great compliment! :D I miss it too, definitely some of the best rules/models/fluff/art GW has ever released.

Meanwhile I've finished the seventh legionnaire for Squad Tarbal:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/HeresyWordBearer7_zpsded2f5ae.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/HeresyWordBearer7_zpsded2f5ae.jpg.html)

Astartes Legionnaire Tarvalin Neseksar, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"The difference between daemons and angels rest solely in which side you're on. Trust me, for I have walked amongst both, pledged my soul to one, and slain the other." - Scripts of the Qliphoth, Book LCVII, unknown Word Bearers Legionnaire

Shown here in still-polished battle armour at the outset of the Ahntaarux hostilities, Legionnaire Neseksar would along with his Chapter go on to forever etch their name into the annals of the Legion during this bitter conflict. The Ahntaarux were Imperial warlords of dire repute, and residing within the Serposia cluster, holding a position that was vital to the shipping lanes from Colchis to the rest of the Imperium. Thus it was that as the threads of the Heresy were woven thicker and Istvaan loomed over the horizon, the Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth was tasked with its utter eradication from the face of the galaxy.

What really transpired in that conflict is all but unknown outside the Chapter, and they won't speak of it, even to the rest of the Legion. As they left the system, the planets of the Ahntaarux dead balls of rock floating through space in their wake, it is known however that the Chapter was at one tenth of its former strength. One Chapter Master had been replaced by another, and then he had perished, too. Three companies had simply disappeared from any record, and of six capital ships, there was no trace.

Perhaps Aurelian himself knows what went on in those five weeks, perhaps not. Since that day, however, the Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth are something of a pariah Chapter within the Legion. Trough favour or scorn, however, is impossible to know.

Oh, and I felt like it was time for an army shot:

17-11-2013, 17:12
Really enjoying the painting, but the background story is very intriguing, too,

18-11-2013, 05:02
I am jealous that you get to see that army on your shelf. They look fantastic!

And a little off track, is that Infinity I see in the background here (http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/photo_zps4240caa6.jpg)?

18-11-2013, 15:51
Thanks guys! Yes, those are indeed Infinity models. I could try to take a couple of pictures of them some day this week if that would be of interest? Might provide some respite from the grim darkness of the far future, if nothing else :)

unwanted - Huge praise mate, not least coming from your amazingly skilful self. Thanks!

Studio Dave - Thanks! Next up was supposed to be an apothecary (might be used for my Night Lords instead... not sure yet) and then a Praetor which I ordered from ebay (lots of bits, expensive expensive...) yesterday. However...:

I have for a long time thought about getting a Daemon of some kind, Ingethel-style. All my searching for a fitting model have been more or less in vain though, so today the idea struck me to rummage around my bits box for a while and see if I could come up with something suitably chaotic. Honestly I'm quite surprised at how well this bitz bonanza turned out, my expectations were low to say the least.

The envoy of the Gods:

Best of all, unlike many a diabolical bargain: I got it for free!

A little unsure about how to go about painting it, but hugely excited to do so.

08-12-2013, 13:32
Great, crazy Daemon-build. I highly approve of this!

Great looking daemon. I'm intrigued to see how you're going to go about painting something that isn't actually a marine.

08-12-2013, 21:48
This log is incredible. Will you be picking up Lorgar or Kor Phaeron and Erebus?

08-12-2013, 22:09
That's really a wierd thing you have there and really chaotic! The what, seven arms? and the horsehead are the best things imho :).
Apart from that, you've got some stellar conversion and paintwork, the red transitions for instance look really cool.

08-12-2013, 23:40
Very much approve of Ingethel the Ammended. Looks considerably more daemonic than much of GWs current daemon range, much more like the descriptions in HH, where daemons are rarely alike, almost never human-looking, and hurt reality by their mere existence. From some angles it looks a little jumbled together, but painting I'm sure will fix that.

10-12-2013, 20:53
I would love to see additional close ups of the Demon, what is that head from? Great job as always...

15-12-2013, 12:54
unwanted - Thanks!

ashc - Indeed, free is good.

matt_17 - Actually this is more or less my first marine army ever, painting Astartes is somewhat novel to me. Anyway, for results, see below!

Pyromancer - Huge thanks! Will definitely get Lorgar, great sculpt and exactly how I imagined him. As for the other too... Nah. Hate their guts in the fluff! When they release Argel Tal, that's a completely different matter...

harlekin - Thanks! Yeah, "chaotic" was what I aimed for indeed.

Idomeneus - Thank you. Ingethel it is not however, just another random Daemon. And I do agree about the fluff/model disparity in GWs models, a far cry from the horror of the HH fluff daemons.

Fidel Cashflow - Here you go! The head's from a Wood Elf glade rider horse. An unexpected source to say the least.

18-12-2013, 13:51
I think its a body from Palatine Blades kit. Judging from the iconography.

18-12-2013, 16:25
Yep, Fizzy is correct. The body of the Paladine Prefector even.

21-12-2013, 12:02

Asdrubael108 - Sorry for the long wait, but here we go again :D

unwanted - U MAD BRO? It's a great kit, honestly.

Long time no see, folks! Updated my Chapter Master a bit, here's version 2.0, about to enter the realm of the paint gods:

Inquisitor Engel
25-07-2014, 20:19
Photobucket apparently doesn't want to let us see your awesome work. :(

29-07-2014, 11:33
Inquisitor Engel - Apparently not, and I have no idea how long it will be before it's online again. Within a month, probably.

For the time being, we'll have to do without the old images due to my Photobucket bandwidth being exceeded and me not having any kind of ambition to paying them for picture storage. I'm a student: Hobby money goes into resin, plastic or metal, not bandwidth. Hopefully my account resets within a couple of days though.

For now though, I actually have a new model (or rather, a remake of Anatavar Xol, the Chapter Master) for once, and it's stored on Imgur so it's even seeable:

Chapter Mastar Anatavar Xol

Truthbringer, Mirrorbearer, Doom of the Sandropeian Void-King, Unfavoured Son of a Son of a King, The Soulless, Lord of the Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII

"Sometimes my thoughts rest upon Terra. Blessed Terra. Our Primarch, beloved of all, might hold Colchis in higher regard, as does many of our Legion.

For there shall come a time, when the scorned son of a son of a king shall slay all those other sons sent to murder him, and from their blood shall he make the mirror with which to see into the future, and reach within, and pluck his own life from the woven threads of the Fates, and place instead his soul therein for trade. From that day, none shall be the one who first dares looks into his eyes, and none more shall attempt his death, but his life shall be the ending of a hundred times hundred times hundred, for the Fates spoke to him on that day, and the Fates said: Have life then, but know that every moment of mortal life is bought with a decade of mortal suffering. And so it was.

- The Huru'an Prophecies, Ind, M27

I fear him, and it shames me not to say so. Who does not? Even now, with some companies playing home to meddling wizards and sorcerors hoping to imitate the prowess of blessed Lorgar, and rituals of possession as far from the original source as a drawing of a painting of a pic-cap, he is still to them as the old and wizened serial killer who never got caught is to the bullies in a playground. And he was that way from long before they even thought up bullying. Am I proud to call him my Chapter Master? In the hundred hells, yes. Do I fear him? More than all those hundred hells combined.

- Lakardias Eventhon, Captain of the 49th Assault Company, XVII Legion, to Remembrancer Gerth Eça

31-07-2014, 01:20
Eeeeee, such a great model, and good to see more from you!

31-07-2014, 18:34
photobucket is rubbish, use imgur.com

04-08-2014, 18:33
unwanted - Huge thanks mate!

Elfaen - Solid advice, already there!

Anybody who'd be up for selling one of the new Gal Vorbak? I only need/want one really, so buying the whole box feels like something of a waste. Drop me a PM!

07-08-2014, 16:26
Repurposed the old Sergeant to a Tactical Marine as I recently beheaded him to use the helmet for my Iron Hands Centurion, and now I've got the MkIII command set incoming to take care of the squad's leadership issues. Also slightly modified a tacital marine I had put together a couple months that I never was happy with, feels a lot better now.

Necromancy ahoy!

The painting urge came back at long last.

Remade the banner on the Contemptor:

And finished painting the most recent Legionnaire made from the old Sergeant:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_7749_zps5hi7ntzi.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_7749_zps5hi7ntzi.jpg.html)

Astartes Legionnaire Etanas Arvil, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"I am the bleeding wound for which the angels weep"

A silent companion if there ever was one, Etanas hailed from the clergy of Colchis, the son of a deeply spiritual family in service to the eight-fold path in one of the lesser towns close to the equatorial wastelands. During his short life on Colchis before induction into the Legion, Etanas was an unnerving presence to anybody in his vicinity, and this aura persisted beyond his transformation into an Astartes. Quiet, reserved, and almost shunned by his brethren, his devotion is nevertheless recognised and many believe - and fear, perhaps - that he is destined for greater glory in service to the Gods. Where Etanas Arvil walks, the skeins of reality wax thin.

And finally, a group shot, although nothing much has happened in a long time. This photo has the benefit of being very close to the true colors of the models though:

Your red is so... warm. There's an almost etheric quality to it with the sharp orange highlights, almost like it's glowing, but it's still clearly painted, which is outstanding. Well done.

01-05-2015, 14:46
Thank you, Inquisitor Engel!

Changes in the command structure again. The old version of Anatavar Xol is back, with a shiny new sword, banner, and some new paint. The old-new version will be demoted to Command Squad duty or sergeancy of a Veteran Squad, depending on how things turn out.

Next up is the sergeant of the Tactical Squad and two more marines.

Here we go with the updated Sergeant:

Astartes Tactical Sergeant Tias Tarsas, Tarbal Tactical Squad

49th Assault Company, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"We used to cast down false gods. We still do."

Tias, the sole survivor of the disaster at Aytheniir-7, the half-man, teller of tales (all true), one of a scant few - especially within the 17th - who ever made friends with a Scar. A ranking one, nevertheless. A dead one, now. That is close to how any of his squad would describe him, this Sergeant of theirs, I believe. Neither loved nor hated, yet doubtlessly respected, for he carries glories far beyond any of those whom he leads. One of the old cadre, one of the first to come from Colchis. It is said that the cleansing of the Terrans from the Legion weighed heavily upon his heart, for many of them he had fought and bled with, and few of us Colchisians had the same claim. Nevertheless, it was the Terrans who died, and regardless of his feelings, Tias Tarsas did not come out of the other side weaker. He did come out with a whole lot of blood on his hands though. Not just from the Terrans.

- Anqar Carves, Entehli Tactical Squad, on Tias Tarsas.

Wow these word bearers are stunning great work

22-06-2015, 20:38
WarsmithGarathor94 - Thank you!

I've started making some 30k Dark Angels, but that doesn't mean my beloved Word Bearers are forgotten, far from it! Just received a package containing this beauty and a couple of random bits:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_9719_zps2cifnlt2.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_9719_zps2cifnlt2.jpg.html)

It's the new and more badass Seltharien Voct, replacing the earlier model made from a Dark Vengeance marine. He's eaten a lot of protein since last time. And yes, he'll be getting a new base!

22-06-2015, 21:12
Always a treat!

23-06-2015, 01:18
You have a nice painting style and have made the Word Bearers look brutal! I love the highlighting on the contemptor dreadnought :) I have no doubt that your Seltharien Voct will look badass when you paint him, and I am looking forward to seeing it.

25-06-2015, 08:36
unwanted - Thank you!

Demonrich - Thanks! Hope it lives up to your expectations! :D

Beautiful. Just Beautiful. :) I'm always taken aback each time you update just how striking those extreme highlights on the armour are. Your painting style is fantastic and one of the most distinctive on these boards; I think I would recognise your work anywhere. Bravo. :)

25-06-2015, 13:30
Ha! That will teach me to pay more attention; I didn't realise there were flames on the model! Nice job :) I hope that isn't a mould line on the left leg :O You've made some nice colour choices, making him look very sinister. I'd just recommend picking the eyes out a bit more.

25-06-2015, 22:10
Laborious - Huge thanks mate! I'm not entirely happy with the highlights on this one though, on certain areas anyway. The chest area looks how I want it to, but the highlights on the legs especially turned out a bit too stark.

Demonrich - Haha I know the feeling! It actually took me a little googling to make sure that they were indeed flames. At first I thought it was flash :D And yes, that seems to be a mould line. Damn. Well spotted!

Now, what's this?

25-06-2015, 23:38
That appears to be a line of death to the face!

26-06-2015, 05:31
Hushrong - Thanks mate! I'm having really fun with the different helmets GW and FW produce. They add some nice variety without going all out chaos (...) .

JackDaw - Cheers! I was never away really, the log got taken down for a while by the mods. Now the issue's been cleared though and everybody's happy!

Anyway, something completely different this time around. I present "The Thanatos at anchor near the Adriatic Clouds", painted with acrylics on a 70x50 cm canvas:

I really wish GW would sell stuff like that.

26-06-2015, 05:45
Beautiful and colourful painting. It looks really great!

30-06-2015, 18:57
Vazalaar - Thank you! Here's another one I made recently in the same mood:

http://pre04.deviantart.net/db56/th/pre/i/2015/181/0/4/the__quintessence___headed_for_antares_by_andreasu neby-d8zdim0.jpg?1

Updated Anatavar Xol again, and I think I hit the sweet spot this time. I should probably rename this log to make it obvious that it's mostly about this one model by now :D

30-06-2015, 22:38
Those paintings :O I am super impressed, well done! Anatavar Xol looks pretty good too, and the head is an excellent choice.

04-07-2015, 08:17
Oh man youve truly put a lot of effort into this! Great with both the models and the backstory! So gonna follow this development.

04-07-2015, 11:38
Demonrich - Thanks mate! Glad you like them!

forkmaster - Thank you, glad to have you on board!

My conscience has made me finish Tarbal Tactical Squad before moving on to the new additions. So here's the ninth member of Tarbal, Garmaiel Kal:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/2015Jul04_5948_zpsejiqnsm2.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/2015Jul04_5948_zpsejiqnsm2.jpg.html)

Garmaiel Kal

"The flesh-scarce", Nuncio-Vox Operator, Squad Tarbal, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

Pictured above is legionnaire Garmaiel Kal at the outset of the Nixdres Stars genocide. A ferocious and sometimes almost foolishly aggressive warrior retired from Assault Squad service due to extensive wounds, more of his body now consists of bionical augmetics than of flesh. Amongst his brethren, he is known as "the flesh-scarce", and it is a long-standing joke in Squad Tarbal that he is more of a nuncio-vox carrying an Astartes than the other way around. Nevertheless, he stands in vast esteem amongst squad, company and Legion alike, for his wounds were inflicted upon him as he protected the unconscious body of Chapter Master Xol from the brutal greenskin hordes on Natilu II, and it is said that the Gods themselves returned his life to his battered corpse as reward for his dedication.

04-07-2015, 21:48
So very pretty!!!

07-11-2015, 11:55
Nobody can complain about going too fast here.

The new Heresy set gave me the mental push I needed to do some more work, and started in the only logical place: The Chapter Master, as always. He still felt a bit unadorned and plain, like a Terminator Sergeant more than a Chapter Master. I think it's getting there:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_2914_zpsje3lhofq.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_2914_zpsje3lhofq.jpg.html)

Just need to find the courage to sculpt the small flames in the Legion symbol, and then it's on to painting. Oh, and I'm probably changing the chapter name too, as I feel the current identity and symbol are a bit lacking compared with the really neat chapters that FW have been churning out.

07-11-2015, 16:14
Looks great so far!

08-11-2015, 11:21
kizzdougs - Thank you, and steal ahead, I stole the idea to begin with :D

ephrael - Haha happy to hear it mate! Whatever you choose, you'll surely have the blessings of the Dark Gods, so it really can't go wrong. Perks of choosing the right Legion.

the emperor is scottish - Thank you! Yeah, I'm not really a fan of the "mutations everyweeeeere" approach, I prefer the corruption to be more subtle, even in the 40k era. The blessings of the Gods feel less special the more liberally sprinkled they are, both visually and in fluff.

A lot of stuff (by my standards) completed now. The Chapter Master (again), and the last Legionnaire of Squad Tarbal, meaning that after three or so years, the squad is finally complete! Yay me! First things first though:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/Word%20Bearers%20Chapter%20Master_zpslkcro7wn.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/Word%20Bearers%20Chapter%20Master_zpslkcro7wn.jpg. html)

And the final Legionnaire:

Legionnaire Orno Akrana
Squad Tarbal, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"Fear not, mortal. I do not want to kill you. We are not brute savages dealing in random acts of violence, like the Wolves, or the... other Wolves. The Sons. Whatever suffering we shall inflict on you will be of dire necessity, burdened with sadness, and very deliberate."

Tactical Squad Tarbal
Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

Shadows of the infernal coil, blood of the faithful boil. For those who stand before us: Oblivion awaits! Bow heads, prepare graves! Tarbal! Tarbal!
- Traditional battle chant of Squad Tarbal

Above is pictured Squad Tarbal at the outset of the Ixis VI Compliance, scant months after Istvaan V (where the Chapter was not present, instead waging its own campaign of territorial conquest for Lorgar far away from the main body of the Legion since years back). Mainly clad in Mk. III variants of plate which lends the squad an undeniably brutal outlook, this is a squad made for - and hardened by - frontal assault and gruesome siege work, which is only natural as a part of the Radiant Qliphoth chapter. The squad leader, Tias Tarsas, is notably clad in reinforced and decorated Mk. IV plate, an uncommon sight amongst these heavier outfits, but nearly as durable as Mk. III with far better movement and sensory apparatus, especially the latter of which is important for a squad leader. It also serves to distinguish the veteran Tarsas as a member of a more elite cadre of Astartes within the company, a visual marker for the spiritual and martial prowess for which he is respected by all within the Chapter.

Beautiful blending on the highlights. These might be my favourite pre-Heresy Word Bearers.

14-11-2015, 14:16
Inquisitor Engel - Thank you! That's huge praise, with the flurry of recent WB projects. Glad you like them!

Finished the first member of the Autocannon support squad. Made a deal with myself not to buy any new toys for the army before all the stuff I've already got is complete, and this far it's actually been quite motivating haha.

Less word-bearing, more Word Bearers:

Legionnaire Anthander Eksos
Squad Daen-Kal, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"We were not practical, not before Monarchia. Guilliman and the Emperor were correct. We had erred from the true path, nay, we had not even found it at all. Afterwards, we learned. Oh, little scribe, how we learned. Now, our foes, and many of our allies too, still see us with the eyes of old. They believe us unpractical still, victims of whims and fancies.

Now, hear me, scribe, and mark this down. Since Monarchia, we have only done what has to be done, and we have done it well. We were told to shy away from false Faith, so we found true Gods and cast off the shackles of a false one. We were told that we were instruments of conquest and war, and warred and conquered we did. We were told that our one concern was to unite humanity, and now, scribe, that is what we must do.

There has been a thousand opportunities to bend and break, and to choose the safe and easy way instead of the hard and true. Yet here we are, unbowed and unbroken, as we prepare for the great undertaking of our time.

Witness as we do the most practical of things. Witness the false Emperor's domains burn."

- Legionnaire Eksos, to Remembrancer Maven-Eriksen.

I'm really looking forward to painting up the rest of the squad, they're really turning out how I pictured them in my head when I ordered the bits a couple of months ago. Should have gone with Heavy Flamers (because BUUUURN!), but can't have it all, can I?

Considering what to do after this. There's a chaplain built (pictures incoming), and I'll add a null/witch to Anatavar Xol's retinue, but after that it will probably be a BAC tactical squad built and painted at half speed plus something more fancy. Currently thinking about:

- Leviathan Dread
- Vindicator
- Land Raider
- Termie squad
- Assault squad
- Human auxiliaries/Army

Ideas? What would you like to see added to this project (including other stuff than the above)?

14-11-2015, 14:36
Kudos, really feeling the heart and soul in these. I think you need a Deimos Infernus for extra crispyness :D

15-11-2015, 10:35
Unwanted - Thanks mate! Yeah, I see what you mean, but the Predator line of vehicles feels so inadequate next to the Sicarians and Land Raiders! Hmmm. Can the Legions use the Macharius tanks? There's one with a huuuuge burninator haha.

Finished the Sergeant as well, but removed the skull faceplates. It looked good on the squad as a unit, but I felt that it drew to much attention when seen as a part of the army as a whole. The burninating shoulder plates will be enough, I think.

Sergeant Taratal Sek
Squad Daen-Kal, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"I did not die, and yet I lost life's breath"

15-11-2015, 11:17
Oh yeah, the Macharius Burninator :P

even more appropriate :D

20-11-2015, 12:39
unwanted - We'll see what happens! Currently thinking in terms of 10 more Tacticals, just to beef out the force a little.

Third squad member coming in. Apologies for the bad photo, was in a hurry to work and will be at my parents' this weekend, so had to snap a pic with the mobile camera.

21-11-2015, 16:32
Completely neglected to mention how much I love the look of the Sarge. They're brutal, and the uniformity adds to the feel of a wall of lead spewing towards you :D

21-11-2015, 19:38
yeah, looking fantastic - well done

05-12-2015, 11:23
unwanted - Thank you! Love the look of HH-era support squads in general. So. Much. Firepower.

andyg2006 - Thanks!

Nothing much exciting going on here, like everybody else I've got my hands on some BaC-marines and couldn't help putting a few together:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/IMG_3145_zpsasgimyth.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/IMG_3145_zpsasgimyth.jpg.html)

Now I'll have to think about what to do about the bases of the army though. 32mm looks ace, but for uniformity I'll have to order/make new ones for the older part of the army. Ah well, what is money anyway....

06-12-2015, 10:56
Soooo, went into a painting frenzy and finished the remaining two Support legionnaires, a test model for the MkIV Tacticals, and the Chaplain that I've been hiding from you. Now, who am I and what have I done to BeatTheBeat?

Picture time:

http://i1047.photobucket.com/albums/b475/SpiritOfArgh/Word%20Bearers%20Support%20Squad_zps4ub8qf2u.jpg (http://s1047.photobucket.com/user/SpiritOfArgh/media/Word%20Bearers%20Support%20Squad_zps4ub8qf2u.jpg.h tml)

Squad Xephon

Legion Heavy Support Squad, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

Xephon was unlike most support formations within the Chapter. Where most were dealers of death from vast ranges or a focused cure to be applied upon finiding a suitable wound, Xephon were an uncaring hammerblow clad in impervious ceramite. They were not so much a support squad as Breachers armed with heavy weaponry. Within the company, the joke goes that they actually were once a Breacher formation, but switched gear mid-exercise to punish the opposing identical formations. If so, it apparently worked.

Angarviel Tolas

Tactical Legionnaire, Squad Alaxes, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII Word Bearers

"I care not to measure the depths of my knowledge and thus stumble upon its limits. By acting upon the Word of the Urizen, I in turn can sip from that vast lake and be the sacred Tool that He requires."

Rokal Thera, Master of Rites

He Who Brings Light, Third Eye, Icon of Monarchia, Chaplain, Chapter of the Radiant Qliphoth, Legio XVII

"In those dark days, I was glad for the guidance and comfort provided by Rokal Thera. He was as a spiritual bastion, a compassionate beacon illuminating the way for us on the verge of losing our ways in the dark storms. He had been attached to us from the Chapter of the Silent Temple, replacing Sor Amathros, who had fallen in the siege at Pale. Yet, he soon became an icon of the Chapter, in all meanings of the word. And the first time we saw him fight? Blood of the Urizen, if we knew not of Daemons before, we surely did then!
- Unknown Legionnarie, excerpt from "Accounts of Sacred War" by Erigad Maviksen, Remembrancer.

Really happy with how these are turning out. All out of bases and basing materials, so that's why the basing is less than satisfactory on some of these. Decided to go with 25mm bases in the future too, as I just couldn't see myself rebasing the models that I've already finished. Next up is the MkIV Tacticals that I've already started on, some more additions to the command squad, and then I feel like it's probably time to reward myself with something big.

06-12-2015, 14:19
Soooo, went into a painting frenzy and finished the remaining two Support legionnaires, a test model for the MkIV Tacticals, and the Chaplain that I've been hiding from you. Now, who am I and what have I done to BeatTheBeat?
I think I speak for us all as I welcome this new usurper. We'll be happy to let you take the place of BeatTheBeat as long as you keep up the painting quality and quantity.:p

Always fond of these little fluff snippets in 30k logs. They really add to that feeling of a historic epos that the Heresy has going.

06-12-2015, 15:30
Great work.

The tac Legionnaire is awesome, and the Chaplain straddles a fine line between heretical and pious :D

07-12-2015, 09:37
Youre doing a great job with the army! :)

13-12-2015, 12:53
Zywus - Haha thank you, we'll see what this replacement can accomplish!

unwanted - Thanks mate!

forkmaster - Thank you, glad you like it!

Finished the Sergeant earlier this week, but the utter lack of daylight in northern Sweden made me wait until the weekend to photograph it properly. A huge fan of old school-ish danger stripes, so he got some on his fist to show off how insanely killy it is.

“He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the Gods' predators around the tiny specks of humanity. Wow, great work!

30-12-2015, 14:44
I've been a little undecided whether I should post this, but two months have gone by without payment from Ephrael over on B&C who commissioned this piece, so I figure it's time to share it with the community instead so I at least get something out of the two full work days I spent on it.

05-01-2016, 02:36
BeattheBeat, just read through the whole plog and loved every minute of it. Personal favourites are the chapter master, the contemptor and the painting of the ship that you done.

Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the BAC set and seeing the army grow, consider me a convert from now on.

05-01-2016, 23:15
Really nice painting! I wish I could get inspiration for traditional painting, last piece I did I actually sold after a guy begged me to sell it to him. After that inspiration has been zero strangely enough.
Anyway, enough about me. Funny thing, at first I though your painting felt a bit... unfocused, but when I saw the Dark Apostle dead centre it all just came together! I didn't notice him at first, being busy looking at the titans, tank, contemptor, marines, banners and sky.
Really nice composition and colour fadeout. :)
