Cruisers
Dominators & Dictators are good.
Lunars can be ok in groups of cruisers but are less effective alone.
Gothics suck, but they're probably the coolest-looking cruiser.
Tyrants are ok if you're buying your cruisers ready-made. If you're buying sprues, your weapons batteries are probably better used for making Dominators.

Big Ships
Mars's are great carriers. Overlords can be good as long as you have adequate carrier capacity in other parts of your fleet.
Emperors are the best battleship. Stay away from Retributions.

Escorts seem to be a matter of personal taste. If in doubt, take Swords.

Fleet composition is really up to you - BFG is much more a game of tactics than army lists, so a good player can do well with just about any list. A well-rounded 1500-point fleet will have some lances, some weapons batteries, some carrier space, some torpedoes, and a nova cannon or two. Escorts are optional, but lots of people find one or two squadrons helpful.

It's also possible (though dirty) to tailor a list to take out certain races if you know what you'll be facing.

And once you get started, the BFG Armada book gives fleet lists for all the 40k races and several more imperial ships. You can buy it to have a hard copy, or download it in pieces from the Specialist Games site.

Thnx so much for your swift reply.....I was more or less oriented to your suggestions....1 more question ....Due to the fact that the GW online store does not show sprues of boxes or models ,i would like to know if most of the models are in plastic or not.....Being a big fan of plastic as it is painted much easier than metal i would be thrilled to find out that at least my capital ships are in plastic...

All imperial & chaos cruisers (including battlecruisers) are plastic. The rest of the BFG line is either metal or resin.

The Gothic doesn't suck.
Combine it with an Armageddon and watch those nice 6WB/6(+2dorsal)Lances Broadsides (not to forget the S12 TorpMarker).

The Dictator ist crap (it should be 30-40p less). The Mars is the far more better carrier.
The best carrier (and the best ship) is the Emperor of course.

I recommend you taking the battlefleet armageddon fleet list. There you get 1 battlecruiser per cruiser and you can take space marine ships if you wish to.
The only downfall of this list is it's lack of dauntlesses (though the Voss light cruisers aren't that bad and you can still include some by reserve rules).
The Dominator also isn't available at this list, but who cares - I wouldn't miss that ship.

What do you guys think of the Light Cruisers classes ? I like them, and got a few Dauntless class light cruisers. Only problem is now even if I wanted to get more, GW has axed the model I believe.

Speaking of Armageddon, I was out of the BFG loop for a while, but did GW ever make any Armageddon class battlecruiser models ? I like the prows on those ships, but it only looks like the Apocalypse Battleship is the only Armageddon ship being sold on the current line.

the best things about the imperium fleet list are the Dauntless light cruiser
you can almost do away with escorts with these babies

What? no escorts at all?
and if i want to play an army list from the 13th Black Crusade era.......is it possible?I don`t like the idea of mixing SM ships along with my Imperial Armada....I know that strategically it may be better, but fluffwise i waould like to keep it as it is:evilgrin:

For 13th Black Crusade battles you've got four choices:

Battlefleet Cadia list - The local garrison fleet!
Segmentum Obscurus Reserve list - Ack! We need reinforcements!
Segmentum Obscurus Bastion list - Standard battlefleets in the EoT area.

The above three lists are all similar, and their lists can be found on the "To Cleanse the Stars" supplemental download from the BFG website.

Or you could just use the regular Gothic sector list. It's not too far from the Eye. (they're all in Segmentum Obscurus at least).

And if you don't want to mix SM ships with your Imperial Navy, then don't buy any SM ships. The Navy functions perfectly well without them.

i don't take escorts for their firepower, i take them for their maneuverability. the dauntlesses are only slightly less maneuverable but also more durable

I was wondering if concerning building different types of ships like cruisers or battleships in order to make a different type you use different bits from sprues on top of a generic hull.....this is the general impression that i have after seeing the designs of ships in the rulebook...I suppose this is for plastic ships like cruisers ,bur for Battleships and in general ships from the armada ,how can we build these other models?

You are right, the cruisers and battlecruisers are all built around the basic hull, just with differing weapons loadouts. Battleships are built either around the Emperor-class hull (Emperor, Oberon, Nemesis classes) or the Retribution hull (Retribution, Apocalypse, Victory classes) - using appropriate weapons sets. The Apocalypse has also its individual, Armageddon-pattern hull. Grand cruisers are all modifications of the Vengeance-class model (with the exception of the Repulsive-class, naturally); the Falchions have their own models, and Vipers are just Cobras with another torpedo tube. The Voss Triumvirate light cruisers need building from scratch though...

As for the ships' usefulness and fleet composition... Generally you need to have at least 2 carriers (more for 1400+ points), plus a mixture of lances and weapons batteries. A Nova cannon is never wrong too. ;) Torpedoes come with the cruisers anyway, so I don't mention them. It's good to have a few fast, manoeuvrable ships, like light cruisers (the standard, lance armed Dauntless-class is my favourite). Escorts, as has already been said, are optional. I take two Firestorms for my 1300 points fleet, and think that's about enough.

And don't listen to anyone speaking bad of Dictators - they're excellent ships. :D
