The only thing that was not completely done by me was the Thunderhawk. I got it off ebay and am currently throwing my bits box at it.

Could you show us some more detailed shots? While the zoomed out shots allow you to show more vehicles its hard to pick out any details ;)

But from we can see, great conversions! :D

New stuff that I've been working on. First, the shirt. I bought a sound machine shirt from Thinkgeek.com. My girlfriend ripped out the innards and made a new shirt from it. I ripped audio files from the Dawn of War videogames. So I now have a Tshirt with a speaker in it that plays ork sounds on cue. I have an assortment of neat, extremely loud phrases. "I am the power of Gork...and Mork" and such. You get the idea.

Next, I built a new battlewagon/trukk. It's the ride for my Cybork Nobz.

Thank you.

Next, I made a final nob biker. I've only run nob bikers in 1 game, but I can see why everyone took them for so long.

I started off with an old Gorkamorka Ork Warbike (the one with the tracked wheel in back), but it was too small for the rest of the unit. I dug through my bits box and found a Dystopian Wars tank that I was eventually going to use for a grot tank. After looting and cutting apart, I sawed a metal meganob torso in half to use as the body.

The robotic arm is a set of Kromlech cybork legs that I had accidentally broken a while back. The hand is a Mantic Games powerklaw.

Here he is with the rest of my warbiker nobs.

And finally, painted up in my army colors.

Fantastic! I especially love the tall treaded monsters with the humanoid shaped torsos, what do you run them as? Gorgaunts or Knight titans or something? :D

25-06-2014, 01:17
Thank you. They're normally battlewagons. But with the Morka/Gorkanaut out, they look a lot better as those. Especially with all the hull points to be had.

Take the two armies most renowned for conversions and mash em together! I love it.

I play 40k about twice a year now so it's become a real treat to drag this army to the store and break it out.

Next, started working on more copies of the meganob I made a while back. I have decided that since meganobz are plastic now, it's worth trying to make some more. I nearly cut off my finger sawing through a metal meganob. The gitz are pinchy.

Anyway, here's the start. The bottoms are made from Dystopian Wars tankettes that I had left over from an ebay deal. I thought I was getting a really good deal until I decided that I needed 5-6 of them. So far, they're like 15 dollars apiece and I need two more. That's a lot, considering that I'm buying meganob bodies and kromlech cybork arms. I'll probably have about the price for two new boxes of meganobs in this unit. But Gork knows, I never built this army because it was easy or cheap. Truly some first world Ork problems. But this was always my dream army and now's not the time to balk at a couple of resin tanks from ebay.

Finally, I did some work on 'Da Fundaork. When I got it, it was really sleek and didn't really look orky to me. It's currently sitting on a bookshelf. I occasionally stick some bits to it, then make the decision that it doesn't look "busy" and mechanical enough. Then I get it back down, stick some more stuff to it, then put it back on the shelf again.

Cue strange, meaningless philosophizing on what makes a really impressive ork model (because it's a fundamentally different aesthetic than with, say, space marines)...

With a really good ork model, you have to ride that line of having it be ridiculously over the top while looking like it could actually work, given some duct tape, red paint, and positive feelings that the machine should turn on. It can look a bit silly, but shouldn't look stupid. Finally, the aesthetic should be more killy than funny, but it can go near 50/50, depending on the level of modeler and how the model is posed. But it should look like it has a huge damage output, either in shooting or melee. It's that aesthetic of "proppa orky" that I've always loved about GW's design and I've tried to emulate it with my own stuff.

But the trick is to do this well, something that I don't always excel at. I like my own stuff, but I have lots of failed projects sitting in boxes because they didn't "work" or just looked dumb. I've scrapped my stompa like six different times and I keep ripping it apart and rebuilding.

With that said, this thing is a bear to convert because it's nothing but flat planes. The normal ork player method of gluing on extra armor plates doesn't really help because the model is too damned big. Some plates are really just a drop in the bucket with this thing. I'm trying to bulk it up without it looking like I'm just gluing random crap onto the sides, which is what you get if you go too heavy with the armor plates.

With orks, my rule of thumb is that if I'm in doubt, it needs more exposed machinery. It bulks up the model, makes it look more rickety, and gives it that "we just looted a forgeworld" theme that I'm after. But it's a process, me gluing on stuff, digging through my bits box, finding another appropriate piece, cutting or sawing that piece to fit, and continuing until I think this thing looks done enough. What I'm kind of worried about is getting to a certain point, painting it, and then wishing that I had done more to it. I wouldn't be as worried if it was just a looted leman russ tank. I mean, I've never owned a thunderhawk, even an ork one. It's the model we all dreamed we could have back when we first saw one in White Dwarf. I'm still really grateful that I have one.

With that said, here are the update pictures. It needs more bits. I'm rather pleased with the back half, as it looks like I think it should. But the front just looks like a thunderhawk with some plastic bits glued on. If anyone has any idea about what I could do with the front to give it that certain something, I'd be interested in hearing.

I think the nose region needs something drastic to break up the easily recognized and woefully flat Thunderhawk profile.

What if you were to bulk out the front so that it looked like an armored, orky fist? Da Fist of Gork, flying full speed to the nearest available face? Would be some annoying plasticard work, but would definitely be unique, and fit the 'Hawk's flying brick aesthetic.

That is a great idea. It would definitely break up the shape.

Got some Ork heads in. These are the maxmini cyber ork heads. I got five and they are amazing. I wish they made more variants. Here are three of them on the meganob bodies. Just waiting on the kromlech arms and then some tubing and bits.

Continuing on with the Giganobz project (since I think it's an appropriate unit name). I started working on a squad leader meganob. One of the maxmini heads was perfect for a boss meganob, but the head was much bigger than the other ones I got. But I love it and I think it's perfect. I then stuck it on a regular meganob body and it looked terrible. So I needed a bigger model. Plus, all of my boss nobs are much bigger than the regular troops, so it fits well. I got out one of my grot tanks and broke off the turret gun. It looks like it could come from the same mek workshop as the little ones and I liked it a lot. I then decided that to make i look right, I needed a bigger set of armor. Cue Ghazkhull's armor. While I'm not a huge fan of finecast, I was glad my local gamestore had one of these because I had to saw it apart. I am never sawing another metal meganob body ever again. I'm also glad I was sawing it apart, because the lower torso and legs were miscast and had a lot of bubbling.

After I sawed it apart and glued it together, I was extremely pleased with how the head size matched with Ghazzy's torso and the grot tank. Here's a couple of pictures.

I've always thought that part of the fun of 40k was kit-bashing, customs, scratch builds etc. (as you can probably tell from my own project log) and nothing exemplifies that like the ORKS.

Its an army MADE for it.

That, said...Great job on these.

More on the Giganob boss. I wanted a larger antenna on his back, so I sawed a terrain piece from one of the old starter boxes apart, a guardsman backpack, and a runtherd's grabba stick. I also sawed apart the tv screen/computer console from a land raider or rhino. Imperial stuff only exists for looting in my mind, so I forget these things. But I've had it for years and wanted to use it. It still needs some worky bits around the outside of it to make it "fit" with the model. Finally, I cut Ghaz's horns to fit and glued them on. I have no idea where they were originally supposed to go, but I like them there.

My battlefoam 720 case also came in. I'm very excited to be able to carry this army without having to load it in three boxes while half of it breaks apart. It was not an issue I even thought of when I started building battlewagons the size of stompas. It's a good case; I recommend it. Especially nice was the custom foam trays. They have pdfs sheets you can print out and draw what shapes you need cut out of the foam. Because a lot of mine have lots of dangly bits, spikes, and such, it's a godsend.

Got some more done on the Giganobz. The mechanical arms came in from Poland. I had a lot of fun playing around with the parts. Still needs some wires and worky bitz. Also redid the antenna on the boss, as I thought it looked too much like a grabba claw.

More work on the Thunderhawk. I think I've done all I wanted to do with this thing. I could probably make it look better, but it's been a long time and I'd like to get it done this century. So after fixing the doors, gluing on some orks and grots, and filling in some gaps, I primered it. I found a lexan flying stand on ebay and am planning on making a base for it. I plan on beginning the painting tomorrow.

Love that Thunderhawk! Keep up the amazing work, after seeing your Giganobz may have to pick up some of the cyber ork heads. They are something else.... WAAAGH!
