~ The Kabal of The Blazing Sun ~

Hello all, this is my 3rd project log here but my first Xenos one. After some dark and brooding Chaos Space Marines I wanted to paint something bright and colouful. Eldar was an obvious choice but at the same time I don't like many of their models, especially their Jetbikes!

So I opted for Dark Eldar. I know Dark Eldar are meant to be painted... dark colours, but I thought of a different idea. What if, much like poisonous insects or frogs in our world, these Dark Eldar paint themselves as a warning. They fear no other creatures of enemies at all, and instead display their colours brazenly.

Anyway, here's the first 10 models. I'll be painting the whole army in preparation for Throne of Skulls in September. If you're going and see this army, give me a shout to say hi!

UPDATE: The army is completely finished now! Check out page 3 for the full spread of images.

Wow! Amazing bite you've got in that... I guess I'll call it evil orange. :) Can I ask what colors/method you've used? I'm currently painting turquoise kabalites, scourges and venoms. Haven't put to much time in them though as I started on the DE to get the chance to airbrush a lot of vehicles. ;)

Hello all! Thanks for all your comments. I just checked back today and will try to answer some of your questions.

The paint scheme is very simple. I wanted to minimise the time I spend on each model so did it in as few steps as possible.

Orange:

White undercoat
Basecoat of Troll Slayer Orange (Layer)
Wash of Feugan Orange (Shade)
Edge highlight of Fire Dragon Bright (Layer)
Final fine edge highlight on only the spikeyest bits of 1:1 Fire Dragon Bright and White Scar (Layer)

Black:

Painted base of 1:1 Abaddon Black (Layer) and Mechanicus standard grey (Base)
Wash with Nuln Oil (Shade)
Highlighted with 1:1 mechanicus standard grey and Russ Grey (Layer)
Final fine edge highlight with Russ Grey.

Bronze/Gold:

Ghennah's Gold (Base)
Wash with Agrath Earthshade (Shade)
Little bit of Mithril Silver (Not sure what the new paint is called) for highlighting tips of spikes etc.

As far as a list goes, here's what I'll be taking to Throne of Skulls. The idea is that it's competitive enough to not see me get tabled 4/5 games and also look good on the board and hopefully catch the judges' eyes.

Update:

Someone asked above what the transports would look like in this colour-scheme, so I've taken some shots to show a WIP.

I've yet to finish the pilot, the gunner and the base, but after that I'll upload some more shots.

Absolutely beautiful. I've always though grey and orange go well but never been game enough to try it. The weathering adds a nice sense of realism too. i imagine dark eldar have better things to do than touch up paint on their craft or do a bit of cleaning!

~Update~

Hello all. Been a while since the last update but I've assembled most of the army and base coated a number of the vehicles. In the meantime I've finished my Archon. He's equipped with a Splinter Pistol, Agoniser and a Shadow Field.

Have you tinted the cloak... with yellow?

You almost foiled my plan of a yellow DE log in the not yet foreseeable future. Yours are more orangish than what I had in mind so the niche is still there ;)

Props for the original colour scheme. Me likey.

Beautiful stuff here. I really love the way you've done the icongraphy so it's a shade lighter than the black and flows through onto the orange, really great stuff.

The scheme is fantastic (I would say that though as I have a chapter of orange and black marines!)

Can you share your weathering technique on the venom? Would be great to see some closer pics as well if you ever get the time. I'm only just starting to dabble with sponges, but I can't figure out how you have got that excellent worn effect on the smooth surfaces instead of just the edges.

When I've tried that it has come out in a horrible splodge and needed repainting!

Hello there and thanks!

I used to use a sponge, but found that the splodges were inconsistent too. Either too much or not enough at all times. Instead, I use a GW stippling brush. They come with "tightly packed" bristles so you'll have to jam it into the table or other hard surface until the bristles splay out and then you'll have a great stippler! I then stippled the highlight colour on the venom before stippling a touch of bestial brown (no idea what it's called these days) over it after. Finally, a small amount of weathering powders to dust it up.

Awesome Job!!! I have been meaning to get around to painting my Dark Eldar pretty much the same scheme but RED instead of Orange. I see you have a bunch of guides you did in your Flicker pool do you think you can do up a Dark Eldar one so I can get a handle on how to go about painting my Dark Eldar that are boxed and shelved for the past 3 years :) It totally different than painting Plague Marines that I am used to and you don't have to be so neat with :)

Here is my version of your colour scheme i have based it how i want to base my dark eldar army it has taken me 1 and a half hours to paint and base this model.

it was a lengthy paint for just one model but this wych with hydra gauntlets looks stunning.

(just ignore the white on the base it is glue around the rock and it hasn't finished drying yet.)

Nice work! He looks very similar! Did you undercoat with white or black?

DragonTears_98
23-07-2013, 01:17
i under coated the model with white, then for the dark part i used inchibi darkness with a wash of nulin oil over it then for the orange i used blazing orange with a wash of baal red they a decent drybrush of sunburst yellow over it and they i did my base and that was then the finished model i came out with.

in the end how i painted this it gave all the orange a blazing effect.

and on the outer parts of the hydra gauntlets i gave and extra 2 coatings of baal red to give the blood effect on the blades like i wanted.

Thought I better give a reason for not a single update in months; I've been batch painting the whole army in one go! This means that while everything is 90% done, nothing is actually finished yet! I've got 3 razorwing jets, a raider, 5 venoms in total, 6 jet bikes, 23 more warriors and tonnes of vehicle crew all nearly done.

With luck I'll post some picks next week as the army is completed in time for TOS next weekend! Gonna be a close one...

Looking good mate! Wish I could compete with your "tribal" skills and speed. :)

Cheers mate! It was 4 months from start to finish. I'd never do it again, that's for sure.

Damn. Looking at those pics makes me want to go out and buy some dark eldar. I don't think they could possibly look cooler than that.

Four months. For everything in your last update or for the ship tribal details? Looking awesome anyway so I'm glad you went through with them. Did you use a homemade stencil and airbrush or how did you achieve them? By the way, I was so inspired by your striking scheme that I just had to try it on a small unit of kabalites. They are now up on my Berminator paints log. Not as striking as yours though. And as they don't match my other units I'll probably rip some arms of them and convert them into trueborn one day. :)

Ha! No, 4 months to pain the whole army. I bought my first box of kabalite warriors at Throne of Skulls May 2013 and took them to play at Throne of Skulls September 2013. I'll go check out your warriors! The tribal work was all freehand. Easier than stencils if you do nice big sweeping patterns. Smaller, finer stuff would be better with a stencil (or more regular stuff like Tau camo patterns).

Definitely one of the best Dark Eldar armies in existence. Awesome job applying a bright scheme while still keeping some of the Dark Eldar's sinister nature.

Will the blank black banners on the Raider be getting any designs?

Please, please, please, please can you do a painting tutorial with pictures for how you do your weathering?

Oh, wow, these are incredibly nice. And from what I can gather, something of a nasty nightmare on the battlefield. Good job!

While I don't think I'm that far behind you when it comes to the vehicles your troops have me grounded mate. I think I could learn a lot if you did a tutorial for the kabalites for example. Looking forward to compare my orange venom with yours. Keep up the good work! :)

Do you think you could do a quick how-to for your bases? I'm really impressed with how you managed to make it nice and bright yet still subtle.

O my dayz, its song of praise, this log be wikked.

Rovient I was a big fan of your Word to the Word Bearers and I also find these guys (and gals) to be awesome too. Great work

NICE! I love that color scheme. I am following a similar palette myself. I really like the distinction you bring to the individual units by rearranging the colors on the armor.Your weathering and lighting effects are nicely done and your painting is very clean/crisp, especially the markings. This might be one of my favorite painted Dark Eldar armies so far, but I have always liked the combination of black or grey with oranges/reds/yellows. I see you went with the 5 man/Venom combo through out the list. I am fairly new to Dark Eldar, but that seems to be the fad. Is it truly pretty competitive? Anyway...NICE WORK!!

Stuff like this always inspires to get back to working on my own stuff and maybe put more time into cleaning an painting them, but I just don;t have the patience after doing the conversions. Sadly, I am a lazy gamer. :( Again...very inspiring...I had to write in a comment again as I'd only seen the first page, but the rest of your army looks great too!

Halloween dark eldar for the win! ;)

These are super nice. I love the OSL on the venom pilots.

Really inspiring painting! Certainly given me some motivation to finish off my DE, which have been sitting in a case, half painted, for far too long... Haven't had a chance to take them for a spin under the new rules edition, but I might have to after seeing these!

Wow. Just an awesome army, clear five star rating. Great combination of colors, crisp painting and good basing tying the whole army together.

Could we get a shot of the whole army at once perhaps?
