"It little profits that an idle king,
By this still hearth, among these barren crags,
Match'd with an aged wife, I mete and dole
Unequal laws unto a savage race,
That hoard, and sleep, and feed, and know not me."

Hello and welcome to this blog/ log thingy for a collection of Luna Wolves I have been fortunate enough to have been commissioned to create. This is my first foray into the world of Pre Heresy/ Heresy era army building although I've admired the work of others from afar. I knew I wanted to cut my teeth with a really special project, and in my procrastination this gem fell into my lap.

The client expressed his wish to create a Luna Wolves force untouched by the perversions of the Warp. The XVI legion in this iteration would be the Emperor's ideal; the striding embodiment of the Imperial Truth, uniting the disparate factions of man beneath the banner of a benevolent Emperor.

The long years of isolation are at an end.
Man has thrown off the shackles of the false gods.
Compliance ensures unity, unity ensures survival.

At the head of this crusade stands Horus Lupercal - the most devastatingly brilliant tactician and leader the Human race has ever known. In his shadow the Tyrant is annihilated, the Alien cast down.

These are all fantastic themes worthy of exploring. I'll be creating the Primarch and his vaunted Mournival to lead a host of Wolves. Although this will only be an infantry based commission, I hope to twist the client's arm a little and paint a raft of vehicles to accompany them.

If you'd like to keep up to date with this project please head over to my facebook page and hit 'like':

Alternatively you can see everything I get up to on my blog site (where you can see some very fetching Batman miniatures):

Subbed :D

Excited by this already, can't wait to see you tackle a full Heresy army (which I'm normally not all that keen on).

Really pleased - I've always wanted to see really well painted Luna Wolves. Their story is also very sad, and therefore very good to read.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the replies guys! I only intended an introduction but this is great.

First shot of the force. This is actually two commission pieces for two clients. The top pack of five is for the Luna Wolves and the second for Sons of Horus. I haven't cut off the Eye of Horus symbol from the first batch because I'm a pussy and just could not face cutting such exquisite detail from the models. I'll work the insignia into the back history of the squad and add Luna wolf symbols to make them different.

At this point in the painting process I've worked up the basic outline of the black armour and put down the first layer of metals. I've also put down the first layer of red. From here I'll start adding scratches and adding contrast to the metals.

Abaddon will be leading both packs, both pre and post heresy versions.

That's all for now folks.

Is that a quote from 'Ulysses' by Andrew Marvell? Anyway, lovely realistic colours so far. Looking forward to more.

Edit: it's Tennyson, those 2 years of A-level English Lit were a waste.

I am so enamoured with your style. I wish I could give all my models the level of detail and attention you do.

"... not only no Terran, nor related to the Terrans, but not even a barbarian from any place that can be named with honors, but a pestilent knave from Cthonia, whence it was never yet possible to buy a decent slave." [Third Philippic, 31]

Sol Legionnaire Braxxis, remark on Horus Lupercal upon finding the Primarch

The response for this project has just been overwhelming. Thank you so much for the support. I've been given such great feedback that I'm thinking of folding all my previous Heresy work into one thread.

Another W.I.P shot of the Luna Wolves commission i'm working on. I've been brushing up on my ancient history in an attempt to answer 'what kind of Empire was the Emperor trying to create?" I've concentrated my studies around the figure of Pericles as I believe this character in history encapsulates the hope of Empire, shying away from the more unsavory aspects of it.

Before I move forward I need a little feedback. What images would be approriate for the legionaries form the Luna Wolves decal sheet?

I understand a few visual cues (lightening bolts = emperor) but I'm unsure what would be appropriate for the power armoured marines.

If you would like to see bigger images (as well as a section of exclusive text) please visit the blog:

In other news, I'm running a promotional give away for a High Elf anointed of Asryan. Once 500 likes have been hit I will give it away to a random sharer. I'll be painting up a Legion Praetor in your chosen colours for me next give away, so even if you don't want the Anointed, like and share anyway to get the next promotion up and running!

What do you have to do?

As always your work keeps impressing me mate ;) the white is beyond gorgeous, I love it! And the Justaerin looks suitably brutal as well.

Looking forward to your next update like crazy :chrome:

Man, I envy your painting style to the fullest, which is good thing :p.

Cheers guys! Abaddon, Loken, Torgeddon, Little Horus and Big Horus are all on their way (W.I.P's on facebook).

In the mean while chop down on a bit of this:

Luna Wolves Legion, Tenth Company, Fourth Cohort

Fourth cohort, here depicted at the Fall of Balan adopt the unusual practice of swapping their legionary symbol onto the right pauldron. This tradition follows on from their stalwart captain, Loken who wears a studded pad on the left to better deflect small arms fire. This practice can be seen to espouse the wider philosophy of the legion; of unsentimental warfare and savage battle acuity.

...And a little sneak peak on the elite elements of the commission.

and why not? Another W.I.P shot of an allied Legionary detachment.

Lovely stuff as always mate, I'm loving the washed out almost black-and-white monochrome look to the Luna Wolves Tacticals.

23-08-2013, 21:03
Gorgeous stuff, mate. Absolutely stunning. Looking forward to seeing more of that allied detachment. :)

@ Laborius; Just checked out your log. Really nice stuff. You're going to like this update.

@Petay: Cheers man. I always have you in mind when coming up with the history entries for the models. Your blogs are very inspiring.

Regarding the tac squad: What Jackdaw said. I don't know if I would have been able to resist the urge to add some colour. I'm really glad you did, they look like a black and white photo. Not often do you see a paint job that adds such mood to a model.

Wow, the tacticals are really good, you don't see many Luna Wolves around. I also really like the Contemptor.

Gorgeous work, mate. The purple is perfect! :)

04-09-2013, 19:47
Cheers guys.

Now, i'm not sure how long these will last. My band width allocation is almost at its limit despite the fact it is a new account. But here goes:

"For the warrior, the only crime is cowardice."
— Attributed to Primarch Horus Lupercal

"The Warmaster's Own" Justaerin Terminators, first company, Sons of Horus
[Pict-capture Istvaan V Massacare]

The unbroken point of the spear, the Justaerin were the vaunted first of Horus' Legion. The Warmaster's Own has the honour of accompanying the higher echelons of the Legionary command staff to battle, gaining their name by the amount of teleport assaults performed alongside Horus.

The squad displays a wide array of weaponry preferring tactical flexibility to battle field specialization. Equally adept at engaging mass infantry to dense armoured formations, The Warmaster's Own have reeved a bloody path through the Great Crusade and have taken their dark legacy into the Heresy with gusto.

Three members of the The Warmaster's Own survived Terra and formed the core bodyguard of Abaddon post heresy. Known for their loyalty, the remaining members would be deceived by more ambitious Traitor Legionaries and put to the Sword M.33.

If you would like to see more pictures there are plenty of links in the above posts to my blogsite or facebook page. These links exist solely for those who are interested in how I go about painting these miniatures - please do not feel pressured into following them.

I'd love to hear any comments you have on the models. They are utterly gorgeous. So much so i've caved in and bought a set for myself.

I've never realized you had tutorials on your blog. I have been looking for a resource to push my painting somewhere new.

I love the scab colour on the talbards, it looks so heavy and leathery. The finish on the black is super too. What varnish do you use?

05-09-2013, 11:37
These all look very pretty lil loser. Keep it up.

09-09-2013, 09:46
simply beautiful, the justaerin are perfectly executed.

Very great models you have here, I absolutely LOVE the Justaerin!
