View Full Version : The Scrots of The Terra Damnata...

It had long been rumoured that a mysterious race of Scrots eeked out a living scavenging the wrecks on the periphery of The Terra Damnata. Tired guardsmen from the Pantagruelian 70th Artillery Company would often report strange ramshackle machines trundling through the abandoned pillboxes that used to protect the entrance to District 100. Robotic phantoms, written off by commanding officers as a sign that the crewman needed to get some sleep and cut back on their partying...

even when a whole platoon of guardsmen reported an encounter with the machines, it was written off as a mass-hallucination, brought on by breathing too much of the toxic miasma that seeps out of the damned earth...

Lovely models! Where are the tankettes from? Looks like Ramshackle Games, but I'm not sure. What rules are you going to use?

look like forge world grot tanks...really nicely painted.

Thanks guys :-)

They are indeed forge world grot tanks, mostly. The red one has forgeworld turret, tracks and guns (the hull and exhausts are scratchbuilt) and the blue one has a scratchbuilt turret dome and the grabbin klaw from i think the gw battlewagon.

I'm going to run them as an ork dreadmob list from the forgeworld book, but with no orks... The robots in-game will be spanna boys with cybork bodies. Not a single greenskin will be allowed in the final army.

Work-In-Progress shot of the third 'scrot tank', this time with a rokkit launcha...
so far it's only really had the base colour, some colour modulation and the checkers airbrushed on... oh and the start of some chipping. loads more work to do on this

Loving this! It looks like you're painting your tanks with an airbrush, is that correct? I really like the paint chips/weathering on your tanks, how did you do that?
Looking forward to more,

Excellent!!! I have exactly this project lined up, the same miniatures purchased and waiting in a box in my room!
Also using the same FW list, and also with zero greenskins... except for a single Mek. I've also got old epic scale dreds and robots to use as grots, with the FW limited Grotbot to run as their bully :)

So pleased to see how well those clanking destroyers come out once painted. Amazing kits, so nicely casted. You've really done them justice!

Are you going to add kans / dreds etc? What about the HQ?

Thank you so much guys (and a huge thanks to whoever gave me a 5-star rating, thats incredibly flattering)

@capitanmee: i do use an airbrush to lay down the basic colours and fades, also all the checkerboard patterns. The chips are all sponged on with blisterpack foam in a dark brown/grey colour ( something like charandon granite) each chip is then given a little highlight on the underside. Then it's a combination of oil washes to get the main weathering effect.

@aryllon: the clankers are mostly really nice models, a few slightly soft areas of detail, and they really need to be on 30mm bases rather than the standard 25mm ones. In terns of what's to come, I've got the fw limited runtbot to be my hq- a painboss with cybork body. And then a couple of epic tinbots to be his grot orderlies. A mega dread, a handful of deff dreads, a mekboy junka, and a killblaster... That'll probably be everything, i only intend for them to be an allied force. Sounds like we'll have some pretty cool matching forces :-)

Aryllon
09-07-2013, 20:02
Haha, brilliant - almost identical lists and mine are also just allies (for a IG 'mercs' project)!
I'm going with Deffskulls. Only a smattering of organic parts, just for painting variety, with plenty of conversions. Torn between the Kromlech mega-armour equivalents or waiting to see what the ork codex brings...

Big Mek (black reach warboss) & Junka (FW Centaur)
10 Grot Bot Scavengers & Bully (Runtbot)
10 Clanking Destroyers
Grot tanks
Walkers of all sizes

But that's not for a year or so - more of yours please!! :)

hehe, yup, mine are IG allies for my cadians- who are the Pantagruelian force mentioned in the opening post. eventually they have a real encounter with the Scrots, and form an allegiance, conveniently boosting the IG close combat capabilities.

anyway, here's a little progress shot, it doesn't look like much, but it takes quite a while to move from the previous stage to here. only a few days more painting and this one'll be finished.

well, the third scrot tank is nearing completion... i've got to build up some exhausts for it as i ruined the ones from the kit, a little bit more work on the muddy areas, a few patches of rust and a couple of bare metal edges to paint in on the chipped paint.

This looks really good. And mind, I usually don't like Orks at all!

Just one little and potentially stupid question: how do you airbrush the checker pattern? I mean, you must be using some kind of template or stencil thing, right? Could you post a pic of it?

Keep up the good work!

Wonderful painting and a gorgeous table in the background I'd love to see in bigger pictures.

21-07-2013, 12:08
Thanks guys :-)

The checkers are masked off with tiny squares of masking tape. I use tamiya brand tape, it has very gentle adhesive with very little tack. I then stick it down onto my cutting mat, cut it into squares (approx 2-3mm in size) and then transfer the squares onto the model and airbrush over them. Simple as that!
The only real tricky bit is lining up the littles squares of tape to get even spacing.

The terrain will slowly make its way into some more pics, i don't actually have much more of it painted than whats visible above.

after a couple of weeks painting the fourth (dalek themed) scrot tank, i decided it just wasn't working and threw it in the paint stripper to be absolved of its sins.
meaning i have very little to show for the past fortnight, except for a wip shot of the fifth tank harassing a mukaali in my display cabinet- a mixture of parts in this one: mostly made up of the rear half of a Kromlech half track, lots of plasticard and a forge world turret.

Forced off its standard flight pattern by a nearby artillery strike, an Imperial Recon Drone logged the following image of an unknown Xenos vehicle while passing over District 100. Finally the Pantagruelian Guard had some concrete evidence that something was happening in the Terra Damnata, surely now their commanders must be willing to believe their reports...

i need a small amount of Lesser Scrots (grot orderlies, riggers etc) for my force, but have no suitable models- i was going to use the old epic tinbots, but looking at them in the flesh, they just don't have the right level of detail and sharpness to them, so i'm going to scratch build them in a more fitting style. above is the start of this process, next to the standard kromlech arm for scale. i guess the finished Lesser Scrots will be approximately half the size of a regular one. as always with plasticard scratchbuilds, the white on white is always a bit hard to see, it should look much better with some paint on it (i hope)

Really fantastic work. I always check these logs when i wake up in the morning and its been a great day everytime i wake up to see you have made an update. The 'action shots' are fantastic how do you get those effects on them?

It will be fantastic army once it has grown a bit more, i think you should play a 500pt roleplay game against your guard and write a report for us

What are you using to do the chesstable pattern? I need it!!!

May i ask you wich colours are you using in the blue tank in the first pic?

Thanks guys :-) i was starting to think that i was the only one who liked my plog ;-)
It's slow progress i know, but as soon as the army gets bigger i promise i'll have bigger action shots.

@ihavetoomuchminis - the blue tank vallejo Dark Prussia Blue mixed with a little white and a little grey. The blue itself is too dark and has poor coverage, but by adding foundation white to it, it gets. Lot more opaque.
The checkerboard pattern is just done with little squares of masking tape and an airbrush. Easy to do, but very time consuming (great way to do it if you're not happy with your freehand ability, like me)

ihavetoomuchminis
20-08-2013, 11:21
thanks! interesting that adding foundation white improves the paint. does it work fine in the airbrush? doesnt it get obtured?.

it seems time consuming indeed. have you tried some other thing? i want to try to make a one rank of squares pattern with masking tape and airbrush it rank after rank....but dont know if it will work fine

With a checker board pattern there is no way I know of to make a reusable "stencil", but have u tried paint mask vinyl? It cuts nicer and is a is more flexible for masking those not so flat areas. Nice models by the way. Might have to do up some of those tanks for the grots in my speed freek army. Top notch painting too.

juxt
22-08-2013, 08:39
it airbrushes just fine when thinned down, infact, i've found that the foundation paints work better through the airbrush than the regular ones do... but i'm by no means experienced enough a painter to really be able to comment on the hows and whys of it all.
i'll have to give the masking vinyl a go, its something i've been interested in for a while but never got round to ordering.

so here's some bad photos of the first finished Lesser Scrot and his larger friends... it's a bad day for photography today, just too dreary outside.

not bad for my first completely scratch-built model, i've learned a lot from doing it though, and the remaining two that need to be built should turn out better. surprisingly, the scale wasn't really an issue, the main problems were just keeping the edges neat, and getting the tracks to sit evenly.

Really gorgeous painting, and fantastically talented conversion work – the scratchbuilds fit in alongside the bought stuff just perfectly. yesterday i scratchbuilt a new head for the next Scrot, primarily as an excuse to get to use one of these AK-Interactive lenses i've had hanging around for a while. they're great little products, not cheap, but what is in our hobby? basically you drill out the sculpted lens from your model (or in this case, i just left a cavity of the right size- 1.5mm) paint the model as normal, then using tweezers you glue the lens into place. quick and easy lens effects on your model :)
they even have a slight reflective quality to them- look at the head on the right, inside the brass collar there is a red reflected spot ala OSL.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/ak-interactivelens_zps192f1631.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/ak-interactivelens_zps192f1631.jpg.html)

please forgive the slightly out of focus shot, it is extremely zoomed in after all (each rivet is 0.5mm across)

progress? why yes!

here's another Lesser Scrot Orderly i just finished scratch-building, this one holds the Boss-Scrot's boss pole, keeping it close by for when heads need banging together.
since he's made of white and grey styrene he doesn't photograph well at all, but i've found that a wash of liquid green stuff and a b&w photo help make the details a bit more visible.

They are going to be a playable allied detachment, using the Dreadmob list from Imperial Armour Volume 8.

The Scrots are spanna boyz with cybork bodies (troops)
Boss-Scrot is a pain boss with cybork body, powerclaw and boss pole (hq)
Lesser Scrots are Grot orderlies (also hq)
Tanks are grot tanks. (Fast)

I will eventually get around to making a mekboy junka (elite) and a mega dread (heavy) to expand the list a bit.

so, after three weeks i've just about got enough work done on the Boss-Scrot to show another wip shot... obviously missing an arm and some final details, and the photos leave a lot to be desired, but they give an idea for now.

i've got to say that i havent really enjoyed painting this model, and it comes across a bit in the paintjob. i think some of it is a psychological hurdle in that i've never painted a commander model before, either in the 6 years of the 1990s that i played in or the 2 years that i've been playing recently. so this is a big first for me. saying that though, it is growing on me as i progress with it.

well, there has been quite a break between my last post and now. I left the dreary, wet, cold UK and went to the rainforest to hang out with sloths and monkeys for a while, which meant not much progress on anything. anyway, since getting back i have made a few things and almost have a usable allied force... just 3 more Scrots to build and then i can fight with the buggers...

the tank mob has swollen in size by another member too, bringing it almost to the full strength of 6.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/blacktank_zps9c9eb272.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/blacktank_zps9c9eb272.jpg.html)

i hadn't originally intended them to be in the colours of the ork klans, but after the first two were so obviously Deff Skullz and Evil Sunz i had to carry on with the theme- army green for Blood Axes, brown for Snakebites and of course black with white checks for Goffs. Meaning the next one in line has to be yellow right?

These little guys are simply glorious. People talk about models having (or lacking) 'character' quite a bit and I've never really been able to pin down what they mean. If I was ever in doubt then seeing these has totally made up my mind. Each one conveys exactly what it means to be a Scrot, like each one is a tiny diorama. Really looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Also, very few models make my girlfriend blurt out the words "adorable" very loudly but yours have done that so I guess you have her compliments too!

wow! thanks a lot guys, you've all made my morning :)

here's a WIP shot of the final Scrot Tank, based very loosely off a Russian KV-2. As you can see this one will be mostly scratch-built when its finished, using only the forgeworld hull (and maybe fw exhausts too). This mob of tanks has been an exercise in cheapness, i'll have managed to just about squeeze 6 tanks out of a pack of 4 models.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/kvscrot_zps2c8ac8af.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/kvscrot_zps2c8ac8af.jpg.html)

obviously the turret is nowhere near complete, the track units are nearly finished, and if all goes to plan, i should have it ready for undercoating in the morning.

:) thanks guys. i'm glad they're going down well, it's always hard to tell what people will make of non-standard 40k stuff.

so, he's just about ready for an undercoat now, assuming the weather holds out for the next couple of hours. i ended up using a few forgeworld detail panels on the turret, just to speed up construction a bit and to try and tie the model into the rest of the mob a little bit more. the little searchlight on the top will be fitted with one of the AK-Interactive lenses too, probably a dull grey optic coloured one.

Cheers buddy :-)

At the moment (well, when i get the compulsary 10 basic Scrots finished) the force is approx 450 points. I think i'd like to get to about 1000 in total, but that should be pretty easy one i've got the core force finished. A mega dread and a junka should add 400 points or so, then a couple of dreads and i'll be there.

yeah, get em finished! :D

this week i managed to get my hands on a copy of Freebooterz, a RT era ork supplement, mainly so i could see where dreadmobs came from... afterall, if you don't know where you came from, how can you know where you're going? or something like that.
i started collecting just before the 2nd edition starter set came out, so i didn't really get to know Rogue trader, but did see bits and bobs in white dwarf and friends' collections. i've got to admit that seeing extra stats like cool and willpower seems a bit alien to me, but i love all the random wargear tables and randomising what units you can buy for your army (much like the realms of chaos books).
the lack of significant fluff and small amounts of artwork/eavy metal sections is a pretty big departure from what we're used to now, but then again, it states on the cover that it's a book of army lists, and that is exactly what it is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/freebooterz_zps07ca984f.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/freebooterz_zps07ca984f.jpg.html)

the rules for genestealer/ork hybrid broods are a particular new favourite of mine, but man, do i ever wish i could use tinboyz stats like these for my scrots- 15 wounds! toughness 10! i know weapons then caused multiple wounds and had hefty save modifiers, but even so. initiative 6 too!

thank you guys :)

i havent been too idle over the past weeks, progress has been made- Scrots number 8 & 9 are now just about done. i have to admit that i'm running out of steam doing these basic scrots, i can't wait to get onto some of the bigger, more interesting models. part of this is because of the cast quality of the parts- i ordered 12 models worth of parts from kromlech, more than half of them were perfect casts, some had minor defects, some had some pretty major problems (which i didn't notice until after i had owned them for half a year, so felt i couldn't really ask for replacements etc) anyway, i used the best casts on the first few models, then the second rate casts on the next batch of models and so on until we get to now. leaving me with the casts that needed the most work to get usable, making my enthusiasm wane a bit.
this all sounds way more negative than i meant it to... have a picture to cheer you up :)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/scrots8and9_zps38767cd1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/scrots8and9_zps38767cd1.jpg.html)

as always, i could moan about the picture quality too- but i won't

i broke one of my self imposed rules about not using The Scrots in anger until they were fully painted, and let them out to fight some Eldar the other day. The ramshackle little guys did surprisingly well for themselves. The Scrot Tanks blew a squad of 10 harlequins off the table in one round of shooting (although the Eldar player didn't realise that he had to activate the shrouding veil power to use it, so that may not have been a fair representation of their firepower) and The Scrots along with Boss-Scrot went toe-to-toe with a squad of Wraithguard and Eldrad for i think 4 or 5 rounds of combat until a powerklaw attack took out the farseer. not bad at all...

right, one more Scrot to paint and then it's onto the big guy, the Scrot to end all Scrots, that's right- Mega-Scrot!

i've been a bit of a Scrot butterfly over the past week, unable to focus on one particular project i've partially assembled the Mega-Scrot, converted and assembled the first Big-Scrot and started work on a terrain board. The board isn't exactly an armies on parade board (since i have no intention of ever going to an event of that nature) but serves pretty much that purpose, its going to be a photo setting/backdrop for everything Scrotty to be shot against.
its still very very WIP. but you can start to see what's happening with it- the entrance into the labyrinthine tunnels that the Scrots inhabit. it'll have rusty junk piles, some sort of pipework etc.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/scrotbase_zps10997c42.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/scrotbase_zps10997c42.jpg.html)

and here is a WIP shot of the first Big-Scrot. Rather than just being a larger than average Scrot, these Big-Scrots are thought by the Imperial Guard to be designed after the high-tech Tau battlesuits, whether they function any differently to other Scrots is yet to be determined.

SDKFZ: it's actually mostly stock kromlech parts, slightly modified to make a more fluid pose. The powerklaw was adjusted a bit and mounted upside down to look a bit more orky, the 'head' is the only scratch built part- made from styrene and a sentinel searchlight lens.
The base is one of the new 50mm size ones, it came with a 40mm but it was just too small.

Wowsers! It's been ages since I've updated this plog, sorry about that guys.
I've been working on a few things recently, I've just finished up a Tin Kan and a Big Scrot for my little army of Scrots. I've got a Kill Team campaign coming up so I needed to get a few models sorted for that.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/tinkan1_zpsf6ubcr5n.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/tinkan1_zpsf6ubcr5n.jpg.html)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/tinkan3_zpsqomhlo3m.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/tinkan3_zpsqomhlo3m.jpg.html)

The Tin Kan is mostly the stock Killa Kan kit- I made some smaller claws for it out of plasticard bits and bobs, and a couple of hull mounted flamers from Cadian infantry flamers. This way it can either represent a Deff Dread with 2 DCCW and 2 scorchas, or a Kan with 1 DCCW and a Scorcha.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v299/juxtimon/brute_zpsapsqrnwq.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/juxtimon/media/brute_zpsapsqrnwq.jpg.html)

The Big Scrot is mostly a Kromlech Juggernaut armoured ork, with a few little tweaks and a scratchbuilt head.

And lastly, just a size comparison pic. Here we have from left to right: a Tin Kan (killa kan), a regular Scrot (spanna boy), the Boss Scrot (painboss), a Lesser Scrot (grot orderly), a Big Scrot (cybork slasha)
