View Full Version : CMDante does Horus Heresy - Abaddon

06-07-2013, 18:19
Well, it's been a long time since I started a thread with anything modelling related on Warseer (checking my profile, since December 2011 to be precise!), so I figured I would dust off the cobwebs and put up a new thread to track my progress painting up some of the Horus Heresy figures I have been buying from Forgeworld.

I bought the Angron model at Games Day last year, but haven't found enough inspiration yet to make a start on him - hobby enthusiasm is something that has been a little lacking for me of late. I have, however, recently got round to making a start on Abaddon from the Abaddon and Loken diorama kit. Both are great figures, but there is something particularly special about Abaddon. His pose has everything.

After spending a good while cleaning him up and repairing/re-sculpting miscast areas (of which there were a few), I have made a start on painting the body. As with most of my projects for the last few years, I prefer to paint in sub-assemblies. In this case, the body, head, arms, sword and base.

As you can see, things are still very much WIP, but as the left leg is the most advanced of the areas I have been working on, I figured I'd share a pic to get some early feedback. I've decided to go for a reflective black, using turquoise hints in the midtones, reds in the shades and light lemon/peach type tones in the highlights to provide some contrast.

The golds have been done with vallejo shining gold and a mix of browns and dark reds to shade, with a few light purple and green glazes to add interest to the mid-tones. Not sure it really shows in the pics though.

The black areas need some more glazes of the shades to darken the shadows up more and bring the overall look back to being a bit darker and smooth out the highlights. I decided on the turquoise tones to help tie him in with Loken when I eventually get around to him.

I look forward to hearing what you guys think!

Got an extra pic up on my blog too (http://www.cmdante.com/2013/07/forgeworld-abaddon-horus-heresy.html).

I'ts good to see you working on something again CMDante, and it's looking really good so far. Any chance we'll se you and this on Games Day? :)

Cheers mate. Not sure about GD this year as this is literally the only thing I've applied paint to since the Nurgle Lord I took last year!

Will probably make a decision nearer the time, but I'll be sure to let you know if I do decide to go and hopefully catch up this time.

I must echo Guilliman's sentiments and say that its good to see you back at it :)

Leg looks fantastic mate ! Can't wait to see the whole thing :)

Cheers guys.

Trying to decide on a personal heraldry for the knee pad - I know Abaddon hasn't really ever had one described (as far as I recall), so all ideas are welcome!

You could have the phase of the moon he represents in the Mournival. Not sure which one it is though.

11-07-2013, 20:03
Ah, great idea! Had forgotten all about that. Now to find out which phase Abaddon is and start creating some stylised moon graphics. Inspiration for this is very much welcome.

Glad I could help mate :)

Flash forward a year and I have finally (finally!) gotten around to finishing this guy off!

Even though there were some prolonged breaks in between, I'm pretty pleased with how he has turned out. In particular, I don't think I really lost much colour/technique consistency despite the body being painted at a vastly different time from the rest.

If you are interested, there are some more pics and different angles up on my blog here:

Couple more pics now I'm no longer posting using my phone:

I tested out the latest additions to my paint collection, Scale75's new paint range, on this one and I have to say, I'm very impressed with them. The metallics in particular are the smoothest I have seen from an acrylic paint range. The regular colours do dry quite Matt for the most part, but this can be extremely handy too. If you want a more satin, GW range type finish, mix in a little of the ink range - simples.

Wow - it may have taken a year but it was well worth the effort. He turned out amazing. Kudos!

Agreed, wonderful Abbadon!

That. Looks. Awesome.

I love the reflective black with the hints of green - it ties him perfectly to the Sons of Horus.

Superb work sir :)

26-07-2014, 11:36
Thanks guys!

Learned a lot on it even if it's not the most complex of sculpts. The sword in particular was a new challenge to paint as it's been a long time since I painted one and did the whole opposing directional reflections. I originally planned to use my airbrush to speed things up but ended up just doing it all by hand using Scale75 metallics and their dark blue and a little of their black and blue inks. Lots of back and forth on that one!

Trying to decide whether to do Lokken, Horus or something else to break things up a bit next.

I have started cleaning up one of the new Wood Elf wild riders as a potential next project as I have a desire to do an elaborate forest base. That said, I do already have Nork Deadog cleaned up and primed. I could always do a nice jungle base for him, so maybe the path of least resistance will win out!

I've taken a few WIP pics of one of the new GW Ogryns I started before finishing Abaddon as a test piece for the new Scale75 paints:

Nothing special so far as he's still very WIP and only had an hour or so in total, but it does show off the nice matt finish of the Scale75 range quite nicely.

I've done an overview review of the Scale75 paints (http://www.cmdante.com/2014/08/scale75-paint-review.html) on my blog too for anyone interested.

Couple more WIPs of a project to convert the Lord Commissar model that started about 2 years ago but got paused when it came time to paint (colours are just rough sketching to decide a scheme):

Basically I cut the legs off of the Commissar model (smoothing out the cape) and then sculpted new ones in. The arms come from the Baneblade commander kit - much better scaled weapons I find.

The pose feels more commanding and better suited to the facial expression I feel. I was planning to paint him up as a regular Guard Commander, hence the white uniform - harking back to the old Rogue Trader artwork.

Hopefully work up the motivation to start painting on him again soon.

Thanks for sharing the WIP and the lovely Abaddon model.

Yes you need to post here more often. ;)

should have left him like this!

Thanks for the kind words guys.

@CaptainBrown - you're not wrong there - though things seem to be much quieter in here than I remember them from when I was last active!

Absolutely stunning work on Abbadon! I really like the subtle glow from his armour reclecting on his lower face. Creates some interest without being ott.
And I must say the skin tones on the ogryn lookis marvelous. I'll head straight over to your blog to read your review of the scale75 paints. I've read a few reviews in the Figure Painte mag, and I guess I'll have to look for a supplier in town. Or else grab a few from a webstore.

19-08-2014, 19:54
Cheers mate.

Yeah, the thinking with the OSL on the face was to bring some nice strong, eye catching colour and contrast to the face to make it really draw the eye. Glad it seems to have worked!.:)

I really can't get enough of the Scale75 paints at the moment - highly recommended. I'm also a big fan of Figure Painter magazine, great read and one of the best 1 I spend in any given month.

Wow, that guard colonel is great - consider that idea incredibly stolen :chrome: ...more power to your sculpting appendages CMDante, keep up the good work!

23-08-2014, 14:06
Thanks Max - more than welcome to take that idea, I get plenty of inspiration from your own work as it is! :)

07-11-2014, 11:57
Hey man! :) Wow that cute fella named Abaddon is looking totally awesome! Everything from the armor to the face and OSL looks absolutely perfect!

I wanna see the finished Imperial guard! Great sculpting there! Now give us mooooore! :D
