View Full Version : Unforgiven Command Squad

Hortwerth

Hi folks!

I just finished a commission piece for a Command Squad for a DA successor chapter. The client decided on scheme, images, wargear and tabards rather than robes.

This lot includes a Grand Master (who he named Azrael), Chief Librarian (Ezekiel), second Librarian (some name out of my mind), Master Chaplain (Asmodai) and second Chaplain (some name again).

The whole squad is converted and painted on Showcase level.

Hope you like them!

Librarian has a Chaos Warrior helmet with the horns cut and filed flat. the Company Champion has a helmet from some Bretonnian sprue, it was with a rope at the back - I think it was meant to be hanging by the saddle.

Very very impressive! How many are there? 12? They are all very good. Not sure I like the banner though - it's not very dark angelsy.

Whoa! Very impressive fella! I especially love the nmm on the 2nd chaplains crozius and the whole company champion model.

The commander figure is alaso very well done indeed, I love his plasma pistol thing, reminds me of the old GW studio terminator captain coversion.

Wow, that is amazing! Every marine has so much character and is unique. I love the plasma weapon that is (I think) twin linked

Sweet job.
How much did that set back the client if you don't mind me asking? 3 figuires?

By far one of the best command squads I've ever seen, love the small details and scroll work, not over done just enough to set it off. I like how you raised the armor around the neck area. How did you get the bone to look like that?

Lovely, is the double shoulder pad on the company champion standard or a conversion?

Firstly, superb job, nicely converted and excellently painted.

A few personal observations- like the way you converted the plasma weapon on the commander, well blended together. However, his right hand looks almost as if it is pock-marked or acid eaten. Was this deliberate, or just the photography/angle.

Not a great fan of the company champions helmet, but the models otherwise looks great and thats just personal opinion. And the standard image doesnt yell war torn future, its more 'robin hood, men it tights'!

Personal comments only, and please refer to my original praise once finished reading!

Looking great but your client doesn't have a clue about Dark Angel fluff and markings IMHO...

anyway, that's not why we are here... we are here to enjoy a superbly painted and converted squad... and it's just that... SUPERB!

I'm sure you're sick of positive feedback, so lets find negative.

1) The bases are rediculously big. I don't care for basing that is bigger than the base, Why not just stick them all on big bases and improve the overall asthetic?

2) the floral decoration requires looking at really hard to make out. it looks like areas of paint bubbling.

3) the crux's look like they just havn't been bothered with.

Hortwerth
01-06-2006, 20:49
Ok, so here's some answers:

The price is somewhat 4-digit. I don't know it, but I was told I'd get a certain amount of PLN for these, and adding Studio's % and with the PLN/$ division, I get something like $1200 for the client to pay.

The bone is painted like this:
1. White undercoat
2. Bronzed Flesh overcoat
3. Snakebite Leather wash
4. Bronzed Flesh basecoat
5. Bronzed Flesh + Elf Flesh 2:1 mix
6-8. 3 watered-down layers of Elf Flesh
9-10. 2 watered down layers of Elf Flesh + White 1:1 mix
11. Watered down layer of white.

That was for armour, for the smaller ares it's simpler: steps 1,2,3,4,6,9,11.

I agree on the standard. I'd much more like to see some skeletal winged figure in green robes holding a scythe, but it was not to be.

The crux on the shoulders were painted at the same time as the armour and in hindsight they may lack some shading. I didn't know if the client gave them to the CS though so I didn't want them to be too stark.

The bases... There are some people who think that if a model is modelled on a rock or on a dead body then it has to drag it physically over the battlefield. I look at this as only a way to make the model stand out and look good.
It depends on a client if he chooses plain bases or resin, but we add resin bases of client's choice for free for any commission on Adept, Master and Showcase level, so it's common that the armies and models we paint come with their own rock to stand on and move around.
A rock is a rock, now imagine the model is taking a pile of junk wherever he moves... And that's the case with our trash bases. I'm re-basing my Adeptus Mechanicus army to these, so reserve any ironic comments for the time I show some pics of them ;)

truely excellent painting - the only thing i don't like is that they're supposed to be unforgiven but don't really say it to me. That and its a hellish coincidence that the commanders of that unforgiven chapter are all named the same as those of the Dark Angels.... Conspiracy i say!!!

still, would happily sell my girlfriend for minitures like that :)

I feel sorry for your girlfirend, she must be some space monster or something...

As for the names... Who cares? The client seems to play using straight DA rules and just dislike the all-green scheme. So what? I'm only executive of his desires.

As has been said before somewhere at some time... jinkies!!! Top banana geez! Really good work there mate, I love Azrael, Asmodai and the Apothecary! I also agree, that the banner isn't hugely DA-ey. That's not to say it's not pretty, but I just don't think it suits it.

Once again, Hortwerth puts us all to shame.

Love the idea of the Chaos Warrior and Bretonnian heads - definately got a pre-heresy style to them that my Templars need...cheers for this stunning example!

Were the scabbarded swords cast? If so from where, if not, where did you get them? They seem to be the only thing I'm having trouble with in my deathwing...

Bill

Hortwerth
03-06-2006, 09:31
The scabbarded swords are knives from Space Wolves sprue (with the bottom part of the wolf skull just cut off) and from Catachans (just cut off the canteen). I suppose the Cadians have even better knives, but I had 11 boxes of Catachans, so these parts just stacked up...

WOW,

They look fantastic Hortwerth, brilliant paint job, I love it. I love the bone colour of the Power Armour. I also really like the NMM on the various metal areas. I especiialy like the NMM on the chaplains Crozius. I also like the marble effect you have created on Azrael's power sword and his twin linked plasma gun looks great. I also like the freehand on the robes and on the banners and the various scroll work on various sword sheaths and shields etc. Great work.

Thank you all. You guys make me want to paint something really well just to show it to you. It's also great that you don't hesitate before posting some constructive criticism (or what you like/don't/could be better). The feeling that what I do is somewhat appealing to you guys and gals from all over the world is really great! Thanks!

Whats up with the shield? A small mistake covered up? I trust its hardly seen in the actual model? :O

That's a standard issue bolt sitting on the plastic in this place. The damage though is a totally random thing - clippers messing up with this part, I just cut it a bit deeper and painted as some edged weapon cuts.

Not to get into an argument, but:

Starting new thread about common topics: you could have searched, it slows down the forum if it is swamped.

Threadomancy: The poster who 'manced this thread had nothing constructive to say, and the item has probably been passed onto the commisioner. Posts over 2-3 weeks old shold NOT be replied to, as this just clogs uyp recent post with old ones.

THIS right here is a concern... I'm SOO glad tou share your minis on here so that if any of your "clients" gets the desire to represent your work as thier own one day.. there will be thousands of folks who will rip him limb from limb and take the sword to you :)

out of interest what is there to say other than "well done" on a topic like this? I don't agree he wasn't constructive because you can't be constructive really in a thread like this! ;)

EDIT: you're right by the letter of the law but I know from posting in historical wargames that that forum gets old threads removed, quite quickly, it should apply in all the forums and this'd not be an issue

Considering that for the amount of $ it takes to get a GD-quality model commissioned, you could buy yourself an actual sword or two (and probably a nicer one than the actual Slayer Sword looks like), I don't really see why anyone would bother. There are easier ways to get 15 seconds of fame.
