Does anyone have any theories or actual reasons why some of the more "minor" legion aren't getting any significant coverage on the Horus Heresy series? Examples being we have heard dick all about the White Scars, Salamanders and Imperial Fists when compared to the likes of the Night Lords and Alpha Legion. Mind you I know this is the Horus Heresy and not the Great Crusade series of books but I can't help but feel fans of good portion of these legion and more are getting left out to dry.

Because they weren't doing anything/much significant before a certain point during the Heresy.

We HAVE seen the major engagements by the Imperial Fists, and the Salamanders were more than just battered due to Isstvan V. The White Scars were blissfully unaware of the Heresy until the whole thing was already rolling.
If they had made a White Scar novel in the series, with nothing more than hints here and there towards the schism, people would probably be just as mad as with the Dark Angels parts which "did not contribute anything" and the likes.

It is not that those Legions are willingly left behind because nobody likes them, but because their circumstances do not lend themselves to writing about them yet. We're talking about a series based on and around pre-existing background material.
The Imperial Fists, for example, had their fleet sent to Isstvan, but got tied down at Phall. The rest stayed behind, reinforcing the Imperial Palace, or fighting on Mars. The Salamanders are popping up here and there, but only now will they take a more prominent role, it would appear. Vulkan Lives is around the corner, Scorched Earth is coming, and the White Scars are getting a full novel after Unremembered Empire, and already had a pretty good novella, for all I've heard so far.

Let's see. The White Scars had a few cameos up until Brotherhood of the Storm by Chris Wraight. Recently the artwork to an upcoming White Scars novel was released. A faction of the White Scars had a major role in the last full-length Garro audio, Sword of Truth.

The Imperial Fists have been all over the place, whether it is in the short stories, or cameos in the novels, or audio dramas. They also got a novella, Crimson Fist.

In general, as DC pointed out, the lack of coverage for the "minor" legions is because of how the story has unfolded so far and how it is supposed to unfold. The Ultramarines didn't get anything until The First Heretic, and even there it was a small cameo. We are in the Calth phase right now and so they are getting quite a bit of coverage. Once Calth passes, we won't be seeing much about them. When the Siege of Terra arc begins, the White Scars, Blood Angels and Imperial Fists will be seen a whole lot more.

As long as the siege doesn't end in "Oh look, how twisted the traitors have become.Oh look, how awesome Sanguinius is.Ah,yes, and Dorn & the Khan" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MyFriendsAndZoidberg)

There's also another Salamanders novella coming out, Scorched Earth, so there's that too.
