View Full Version : Dark Eldar... a likely slow and tortuous exercise

24-07-2013, 11:31
Afternoon all,

I have had a large number of Dark Eldar lurking around my collection now since their re-release, and I have never settled on a theme. However, whilst i wait for a contract to turn up to occupy my time, I thought I'd make a start on them.

So far I've only completed a single squad of warriors (well almost), just have the sybarite to finish off, and I'm struggling for a name for my Kabal. Anyway the warriors

I am also working on converting a wraithknight to the dark side :D, so far my plan consists of using some spare aethersails, and adding some spiky bits as well, hopefully I'll be able to pull it off and not have wasted a fair few quid.

Ok so i've made some progress on the wraithknight conversion. The body and legs are now attached, and the legs are on the base, amking it easier to fogure stuff out.

So as you can see from the pics a the aethersails now replace the original vanes, giving a much stronger DE look, also i found some talos whippy arms, which i managed to manhandle into place on the torso (not glued yet though, and neither are the sails). So i think no it looks a little more haemonculafied :D, although i do have concerns with the arms.

My only other issue is weaponry, I don't have enough DE weapons for the shoulders, and i'm rubbish at manufacturing my own stuff, and I'd certainly be bobbins at the main guns, so i think i'll have to settle with the original Eldar guns, unless you good people have any ideas.

Anyway pics:

This is cool, but you should go further! More DE detail please :)

If you do, I can spare guns from the Reaver kit if they are of any use?

25-07-2013, 18:30
I've got a few other ideas planned, i'll be pinching a number of chain adornments from the raider kit i have, as well as so bits from the warhammer corpse cart.

I have gone for the shuriken cannons on the sholders , but planning on adding some blasters or blaster/dark lance to the wraith cannons, as some extra bits to further DE it up a bit. Thanks for the offer of spare guns though :)

That looks very promising indeed so far. I think with that type of Investment i think you shouldnt compromise. Im sure if you go into your local games workshop they maybe able to help. On another note i think if it carried an Wraithkinight scale incubi blade and had an incudi esq helmet it would look awesome

25-07-2013, 18:48
That wraithknight conversion is looking awesome thus far, really impressive.

The kit itself is beautiful, probably on of the best plastics I've seen GW put out.

25-07-2013, 18:58
I'm feeling the pressure now :S thanks for the kind words though.

THe wraithknight kit is fabulous, and goes together really well, although there are a couple of steps i migh move to make things slightly easier to fit together.

Loving the incubus blade idea minigiant!

25-07-2013, 21:13
Right blade conversion is under way, i wasn't planning on using it anyway, so if i mess it up i'm not too concerned. Pics to follow tomorrow :)

25-07-2013, 23:43
Oh this things going to look bad-ass!

26-07-2013, 08:19
I'd like to do this myself in the future so I will be keeping a close eye on this. Good work so far. I like the sails on his back, is thought of that to but wasn't sure how it'd look but it looks fantastic!

Well here's the wraithklaive:

just need the greenstuff to set fully so i can sand it down to a nice smooth finish. I think it looks suitably DE to make this chap stand out a bit :D

26-07-2013, 22:11
Awesome, been waiting to see someone convert a DE Wraithknight. The sword-to-glaive idea is great. Looking forward to seeing more.

27-07-2013, 15:35
Sword looks suitably menacing and Dark Eldar ish. Look forward to seeing more

29-07-2013, 16:18
Great conversion there fella. looking forward to seeing it finished. Great looking paint job too. Is the wraithknight also going to be coloured a deep red?

Cheers, Niall

29-07-2013, 16:23
I'm subscribing to follow that Wraithknight conversion!

29-07-2013, 17:41
Cheers chaps.

I'm making good progress, the klaive has been finished and will hopefully look ok when he's primrered. I will be using my dark red recipe, with the sybarite green accent colours primarily used on the aethersails.

29-07-2013, 17:51
I'll just add my voice to the rest, that Wraith knight is sure looking cool so far.

29-07-2013, 17:52
cool conversion, interested to see how it turns out :)

30-07-2013, 06:14
Wow, that is sooo spooky! I had a dream last night about what a Dark Eldar Incubi Wraightknight conversion would look like, then I found this thread and it's almost identical to the images I got. Really good progress with this and the aethersails + tentacles look very appropriate (as well as being very cool ideas + executions).

Right update ahoy....

Well things were going swimmingly then... disaster i was drilling a hole for one of the trophy spears (see below) and the torso collapsed on itself. There is a central round piece in the middle of the torso that forms the socket part of the waste joint, seems i hadn't used enough glue, trouble was it was wedged in the torso, so i had to manhandle it out, pulling off some previously glued pieces, cue mucho swearing, god knows what the neighbors though... luckily i rescued it, and made it all good again. So anyway, the build part is virtually complete, I just need to add some chains and I'm calling it built. The arms, sails and are still loose and will be undercoat unattached to make painting easier.

Anyway a pic for you, i think it has rather come together :)

Thanks for following this...

Looking good, but I think the trophy spears should be a little shorter. Right now they stick up waaay high and look like they'd be wobbling around. Have anything planned with the face?

31-07-2013, 04:11
Very cool.

31-07-2013, 10:49
@ Pekel ... looking at it now i agree the trophy poles are a touch tall, they will be trimmed down shortly. My plan with the face is to paint a DE rune in a swirly type pattern some how, or maybe just plain. If you hear lots of swearing you know why :D I won't do any sculpting on it, as I'm rubbish with greenstuff.

01-08-2013, 10:22

Trophy spear were shortened, and after some feedback, a shoulder blade has been attached. Oh and the head has been painted.

Hmm it seems the perspective of the photo makes the left hand side look bigger than it is... trust me everything is in proportion.

01-08-2013, 21:55
That's a sweet red on the warriors. (perhaps the highlights could be blended some more though or be slightly thinner, perhaps simply a red wash?). It looks better on the wraithknight head.

The Dark Wraithknight is inspired. It will be nice to see you make progress on it. I've always liked the idea of having something other than a blank face on wraithconstructs. I can sorta imagine that symbol being used for an energydrink. (packed with taurin and souls)

02-08-2013, 01:04
ok, that wraithknight looks EPIC!!!!! i'm really looking forward to seeing this guy, and the rest of the army, progress. awesome work, keep it up :)

02-08-2013, 03:08
glad you shortened the trophy spears it looks a lot better, the face looks cool, could you show a close up?

02-08-2013, 13:31
Well i've started work on the sword, I made an abortive attempt at airbrushig it nmm stylee, but it looked horrendous, so settled with proper metallics. I will be adding gore to it, I've got a great recipe and method for putting it on.

At first, I was concerned that even with the nice modifications you made the wraithknight would still be too "Eldar". However, your paint job is really changing my opinion on that one, loving it so far!

18-02-2014, 20:09
Not sure what what about using a reaver top hull for the cod piece?

25-02-2014, 18:18
testing something

26-02-2014, 14:35
Looking very good! I like your idea of a converted Wraitknight - which seems to work very well.

27-02-2014, 21:50
Awesome! Great idea :)

11-03-2014, 21:14
This is a great conversion... keep up the good work.. i love it

11-03-2014, 21:19
Very interesting project. I've been asking myself how a dark eldar knight would look.
