The Tiamat Dynasty

Civilisations sprung, blossomed, faltered - fell.
Life evolved, adapted, petered - died.
The land shifted, burned, erupted, singed - flooded.
The world became devoid, barren.
Then and only then was it time.

Hello fellow Warseers, I'm a long time lurker in various corners of this website and have spent an immeasurable amount of time reading the absolutely fantastic posts that grace the project logs section in particular. I figured it was time to draw my own sword from the furnace and begin to carve my own little piece of forum activity.

The plan isn't really one with a gaming focus at its end-point, as I have never actually played Warhammer 40k seriously despite following it for 14 years and spending amounts of money that sicken me on miniatures.

The plan is, as you've probably assumed by now, to simply sate my modelling desires and keep me accountable to the project through to its completion.

The first miniature on this long road: A custom scarab swarm base! - still has some cleaning up to do -

Oooh underwater Necrons, interesting.

Have you considered playing up some of the 'Lovecraftian Horror' feel the Necrons used to have tying this in with Ry'leh etc ?

You also have to use this (http://www.firestormgames.co.uk/14620)

You, sir, are going to need to learn how to sculpt barnacles. I think that this project has some serious potential. Since you're a modeler and not exactly a player, I think you need to get yourself some crazy custom bases and water effects. Let me help with that.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LAST-STAND-CONVERTIBLES-BITS-SAND-WAVES-SMALL-SHELLS-ASSORTED-ARMY-PACK-75-/330901092764?pt=Games_US&hash=item4d0b3df99c

Also, you can use this to sub for the green rod. It's already the right size and kind of a nice transparent blue, like water.

There's another log on here, Blue Necrons, that makes use of this as well as flat sheets to make the monolith crystal.

@cornonthecob - Not necessarily Ry'leh (I haven't read into the topic so know next to nothing about it), but this Dynasty has something of a unique back-story which I will be expanding in later posts.

@bossfearless - Those shells look awesome, I will most likely buy a pack - thanks for the link! The rods will be painted, but thanks for the links to the blue ones regardless.

You know what would look good in this project? The occasional LED. Just saying.

Now that really would be cool, and something I've always wanted to dabble in.

I'd imagine its a very involved process, however.

Not nearly as hard or as involved as you'd imagine. Read my log here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?374513-Dubstep-Tau-(Pic-Heavy)) to see me fiddle and botch my way through the process. Look at it this way, I can do it and I'm half-blinded from eye surgery, completely inept at soldering and deployed to Saudi Arabia. In a civilized country, it'll be a walk in the park. PM me and pick my brain if you're interested, I literally have nothing better to do than help you out.

So what are you thinking for an overall color scheme? I'm imagining some really sweet oxidized metal effects to go with the barnacles and algae. However, it comes down to the question of whether or not your Crons are gonna be "bare metal" or have a coat of old, degenerated paint on top.

Having looked at other themed 'crons, I decided to go with a completely rusted theme featuring verdigris and other aging effects I've looked at on pictures of the Titanic wreck etc.

The back-story essentially amounts to the Dynasty rejecting their mechanical bodies, having been tricked into entering them - They don't maintain them and care for them in any way, hence the barnacles remaining even after reanimation.

I like the idea of totally neglected rust-crons. I was going to suggest verdigris but you beat me to it. I can show you how to do a few simple LEDs so that your lords/crypteks/monolith/etc can stand out from the crowd. There was a guy I worked with on a Necron project a good while back, and he did his Crons in a totally dilapidated state. Rust, grime, crud, etc. However, the lord was painted a bright, shining, pristine white and we did all these neat effects with the model to show that here was the one guy in the army important enough to be maintained. It looked fabulous.

Couple other ideas for you. Maybe model one or two of your rank and file severely battle damaged, his chest cracked open and mechanical guts spilled out, dragging along the ocean floor. Second idea is to give them crabs. Sculpt a simple little crab out of GS and have it clinging to the head of a warrior or two. Last one, I swear: I'm big on wings for HQs, and this log makes me think of the Reaper model "Dark Maiden," that is essentially the animated heraldry on the front of a sunken ship, with the wreck branching out behind it like a pair of wooden wings. It might be worth considering. I know from experience that the model and the "wings" are separate bits and they would pretty easily attach to the back of a Necron Lord.

Edit: Dammit, I just *had* to go on the Reaper website. Now I'm seeing a million awesome things. Anyway, let this idea rattle around in your head a bit. Use these instead of standard flying stands for your vehicles: http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/03645/latest/03645

Edit (again): And this: http://www.reapermini.com/Miniatures/crab/latest/03608 This is why I don't go on the Reaper site...

@bossfearless - Thanks for all the suggestions and help, I like some of those ideas and minis that you linked. I've been looking in a lot of places for altenative C'tan models as I really dislike the two that GW have put out thus far. I'm playing the idea of sculpting octopus/squid like legs for my lord, but I'm not really sure which way I'll go with that.

On to the update:

Work continued with the assembly and additional sculpting to a squad of 5 Immortals - Here is where they are at as of ten minutes ago:

The greenstuff work has, for the most part, turned out nicely so far and resembles how I wanted it, I want to have seaweed hanging from the weapons and the armour but I can't find any reference material on anyone else trying the same thing. My attempts so far have led to greenstuff which is basically far too thin once dried and doesn't want to hold its shape.

In a couple of days I predict I'll have this squad completely prepared to be painted and I can finally put my paint scheme to work.

Loving the GS work so far. The algae look is really coming together and I can't wait to see some more of what you have planned.

The nice thing about the Ctan, from a modeling perspective, is that they can really choose to look like anything. They're naughty vampire gods, they can do what they want. Personally I would use the Ctan as an excuse to field a nude female model of some type, but that's always my approach to everything. For your army in particular, I can think of four themes I would use for the Ctan.

1. Unfathomable horror from the depths, forgotten by time, the nameless soul-churning abomination.
2. The embodiment of physical perfection, a deific being beyond mortality. Something like the adonis models that GW makes for the Ctan, but like I said I'd go for a feminine incarnation
3. The rusting clockwork shamble, an amalgamation of parts and pieces given life and form by a the power and boundless malevolence of the star god. Perhaps it was once a perfect clockwork titan, but it's gone to hell just as surely as the necrons who hold its reins.
4. Something completely out of left field, a giant hermit crab in a hawaiian shirt with a butcher knife and a glass eye, with gang tattoos because he's from the streets.

As far as the lord, I can suggest a specific model to you if you're on the fence. Lich Lord Asphyxious, from Warmachine's Cryx faction. If you're not familiar with that range, you should definitely check this specific model out. The model comes equipped with a warscythe, and a particularly awesome scenic base (a tornado of stolen souls). The only part of the model I might suggest replacing is the head, as it's sculpted to look like an organic skull in an otherwise all metal shell, and any of the necron heads would look great in its place.

I think this idea would be best. Then you should make the KRAKEN!

@bossfearless - Man you are a pretty bottomless pit of useful knowledge, I really appreciate your posts here! I really want to go for some sort of squid-like monstrosity for the C'tan but the sculpting work might be too intensive. I was considering trying to get my hands on the transcendent shard from the new apocalypse kit the 'crons got and doing something cool with that instead. I have looked at the Asphyxious model before and with some clever conversion work he could really look awesome.

@Minigiant - I would really love to make something Kraken inspired, but I fear that there may be a skill ceiling there.

Today brought the first lick of paint:

http://i.imgur.com/Wl5Oqgw.jpg?1

Happy with how it turned out, though the rust effect seems a lot more muted in that picture than it is in real life. Now to churn out the entire squad!

P.S - I know about the mold-line, I tried to fill it in but those tesla coils are notoriously hard to GS. I shamefully gave up on it.

You want squids? I think I can help. I think you'll want to start with a Cronos Pain Engine from the Dark Eldar line. It's got an "eldritch monstrosity" feel to it, and it also comes with plenty of tentacles! But wait? You want more tentacles? Let's get you more tentacles. Grab the tentacles from the Maulerfiend off of any given eBay bits seller, and some armor from various Tyranid monstrous creatures. Hell, I'd build and put LEDs in the thing myself if I had the kits lol. Oh, it needs a beak. All horrible abominations from the deep have beaks. Maybe get one from a gryphon or some other WH Fantasy monster?

I keep thinking about underwater monsters and now...god...dammit. Now I have to go download XCOM: Terror From The Deep again. I'm going to get bad touched by lobster men.

@ashc - Thanks a bunch for the feedback! It was hard to visualise the painted figure when it was just greenstuff, its also hard to see how the green-stuff features will look when painted up, sometimes they appear to lack the correct texture to dry-brush properly.

@puckus10 - Thanks for the feedback!

@bossfearless - Some interesting ideas, I've been looking for ways to have the squid features not be organic, some sort of Necron mechano-squid. I've seen some modelling tools around which are designed for making tubing via a sort of press mold-rolling system.

The first finished model:

http://i.imgur.com/HhTbMzF.jpg?1

There were some mistakes made during the painting of this guy which I aim to rectify whilst painting the rest of the squad. One annoying thing that happened was me trying to erase part of a wash with a cotton bud which had vaseline on it, d'oh. This led to me having to dig vaseline'd cotton bud fragments out of one of the eyeholes and I'm not satisfied with the eyes at all on this model as a result. Alas, the rest shall look better.

You beat me to it ! Damn ninjas ! That said, by sheer luck on the top of the page you linked to is the other log I wanted to refer here, full of rusty Necrons (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?291127-Rust-Crons).

XenosVanquisher, you might want to check the whole Mariner log (not only the Kraken thingy) if you don't already know it. You've taken a different route than both logs Minigant and I linked to but you may find some ideas/techniques that would fuel your imagination.

I believe that the tentacles on the talos engine are mechanical in nature. Or at the least they would be easy to render mechanical by simy painting them that way.

Now, its a little too big but take a look at the cryx colossal from warmachine. It is aptly named the Kraken.

Hey, take a look at this page. It's a dark mechanicus log over on dakka dakka. You'll see lots of examples of how to make a mechanical kraken using tentacles from a Talos and a maulerfiend, all of which are available on a lot of different bits sites on ebay.
