The Iron Tenth: A Heresy Era Iron Hands Project Log

"They are not my hands. This fact is forgotten by my brothers -- inexplicably, it has always seemed to me. The hands are strong, to be sure, and have created great things for us all, but they are not mine. And that counts for something. They forget that the silver on my arms comes from a beast that I vanquished. It is the mark of a great evil that I ended, and yet it persists within me...I would struggle to remove it now...I will not remove the silver from my flesh because I have learned to depend on it."

- Ferrus Manus, Lord Primarch of the Iron Tenth

So this is where it all begins, the massive pile of Forgeworld packets. It's not a new pile of stuff, I've had it for a little while and the following work has come about over months of sneaking free time here and there. As a commission painter, your own stuff always comes last, hence this has been and will continue to be slow going. So far though, its been great fun, finding a scheme that I'm happy with, that looks decent but doesn't take too long to do.

There are loads of personal goals for the project, and I hope this log keeps me going towards them, the stuff that I see in these painting forums is really inspirational to me (particularly the Heresy stuff) so I feel it's time to be a part of it. Why Heresy Era Iron Hands then, and what do I want to achieve?

- To have a fully painted army of my own (who doesn't right?)
- To have a Heresy Army to join in a local campaign
- To get an army to the point of Apocalypse, by itself, not just a case of throwing random armies on the table
- To have it as accurate as possible with all of the markings consistant with the material available to me (I don't like to use the word historical here, as it sounds a bit strange! But I have been inspired by historical projects lately and would like to keep this attention to detail in mind when working on these guys)
- To make them look battle-worn. I usually paint with a very clean style, this is the setting to change that habit.

Army List

So this is the Army List that I will be working on based on the things I've already purchased. I have a few extra bits that I will add as I go, but this is the initial plan for roughly 1500 points. When I hit this initial target, I will build up and up, perhaps starting with new lists from scratch (assault based forces, siege based etc) other times just adding on top. Goal in mind: Apocalypse!

Really nice work, I can't wait to see how it turns out!

[Everyone] - Thank you so much for your kind comments, I will get stuff done as soon as possible, might get a chance this weekend! Here's what is next on the station,

http://i1363.photobucket.com/albums/r714/BlazingBrushStudio/SpartanLeft_zpsaea32c04.jpg (http://s1363.photobucket.com/user/BlazingBrushStudio/media/SpartanLeft_zpsaea32c04.jpg.html)

[Dudde] - I will get a step by step guide up when I do my next batch of Legion Marines, it's easy stuff, arm yourself with sponges!

[Short Bearer One] - I'm torn on bionics. I feel they certainly have their place at this time within the army, after all Manus states that 'my Legion have already begun to shun their flesh' but I still don't feel that they are quite at the point of 'the flesh is weak' that we are used to at the point of 40k. Long story short, I want them in, in moderation, and I'm sure later this year FW will bring some IH specific bionic parts, but I don't want them everywhere. I'm actually hopeful that 'super bionic robot men' will not be their primary feature when the second heresy book is released, it's a personal thing, but I've got my fingers crossed! I guess I like the Legion look :)

Thanks again everyone.

The red and bronze touches just set things off perfectly, on top of a beautiful, natural black.

10-08-2013, 07:55
Lovely work fella, a very fine start indeed, i find myself jealous of your painting precision!

10-08-2013, 20:25
Looking impressive so far. Think a subscription may be in order.

10-08-2013, 20:42
There's something about Centurion Drac and Tactical Sergeant Gorta that just screams bad-assery without any of the bling that you see on the 40K minis. In terms of understated dangerousness (?), they're kind of how I saw Captain Loken when I started reading the Heresy books. As in they're equipped little differently to their fellows, they're just better at using them than other folks. Except of course that they aren't Lunar Wolves...Does that make sense?

11-08-2013, 09:55
Wow. Those are amazingly good Iron Hands. Probably my most favourite ones so far from those seen on warseer!

11-08-2013, 12:32
Subscribing. I like your view on the Iron X. Really nice black, and I agree on the bionics thing, I think the real obsession came after Ferrus bought it.

1 Question: How did you do the red?

13-08-2013, 20:55
Awesome start, i really ike your IH! Looking forward to the tutorial, sponges are ready ;)

Fantastic looking project so far, almost makes me regret not choosing the tenth legion back when I started my own heresy army :D Keep up the good work!

14-08-2013, 07:10
Best Iron Hands I've seen for a while. What are those tufts you used? Is it dead grass or does it have a slight green tinge to it? It's exactly what I'm looking for for an army I alreayd have.

14-08-2013, 07:42
That's it really..... Just wow!

14-08-2013, 09:41
These Iron Hands are great! Are you planning on adding any bionics at all?

I'm building a Heresy-Era Iron Hands Army myself (see the blog in my sig), so I'll be watching this thread with interest!

There we go, sorry about the quality of the pics, they are really quite close so they've become a bit intense. I'm going to take some more with its cargo 'The Aretaon' to show how the colours match up. Going to spend some time replying to all your kind comments in the next post!

14-08-2013, 22:07
This Spartan looks just as amazing as your troops. I'm really looking forward to your painting recipe even if you just run us through it without pics. Fantastic army so far.

14-08-2013, 22:38
First of all, thank you so much for taking notice of the log, I'm really pleased it's been well received, especially when I look at the work you're doing towards your own projects.

[Inquisitor Engel] - It's tough with Iron Hands, they have the perfect colour scheme to be dull if theres nothing to break up the black, I was pleased that the red and brass did the trick, thanks v much for saying so. I checked out your blogs, I hope the Night Lords get further some love, that LC terminator looks incredible and terrifying all at once.

[Petay1985] - Thanks a lot man. I love the scheme mainly because precision is normally not too necessary however!

[unwanted] - Don't think I've been subbed before, I'l try to make it worthwhile!

[Munday] - I love this comment. It reminds me of when I built Gorta in the first place, I thought "Power Fist obviously, or a sword for chopping up other marines? hmm," then enjoyed the idea that maybe chainswording up an enemy Sergeant would fill me with joy, just like those initial moments from Horus Rising when Locasta assault the False Emperors palace. They did it with Boltguns, Chainblades and grit, not fancy stuff. Love it.

[VERITAS/AEQUITAS] - Thank you, high praise indeed. Your modern military blog is so interesting. Maybe it's just because I've not seen the like before, but more probably it's because it's so well done. Attention to detail was something I wanted to remain high on the agenda here, your blog is all about that, I will be looking at it so much over the next few days. Amazing where the best inspiration can come from isn't it?

[Drazhk] - I thought I was the only one that liked them as Legionares, not just robo-men. Takes the personality out, or something, I don't know what it is but I like it as a detail, not as the be-all-end-all. Red is nice and easy,
- Khorne Red Basecoat
- Agrax Earthshade + Water 50/50 all over
- Khorne Red tidy up
- Squig Orange highlights
- Agrax Earthshade line shade to reinforce the shadows (not always needed)
I'm going to get a step by step up next week sometime, I'll show this in action then.

[Kjeld] - It's coming! I want to do it with pictures though, just to make it easy to follow, I think a list of words as a painting guide is pretty dull and not it's not very helpful to anyone!

[the damned artificer] - Man, you've got Imp Fists, they are actually my weakness as a Legion force, I'd love to do them, I think they'd be next in line if im totally honest. The style you've chosen for yours seems similar to the one I've done with the Hands, no shiny armour plates in sight, would be ace to see them on the same battlefield. Shame I get panned at Istvaan :/ Thanks for the kind words, will certainly look at the Fists log over the coming weekend.

[Dismembered] - Thank you very much! The tufts are GW's 'Mordhiem Turf', the only slight difference is I apply them before I purity seal the model (by accident the first time, happy mistake though!) as this tends to bleach the tuft a little and allows it to fit better with the desert/wasteland base style.

[K3nn3rs] - Bam! Short and sweet, thanks man!

[Urza] - Bionics will feature, I dont want to come across as a total bionic hater, they are really cool and add character when used right. I just don't enjoy it being the only thing that identifies the Legion, I want characters and personality to rule the army, not 'they are all covered in bionics ergo they are Iron Hands, obviously, job done.' Also, your models match the weekender poster almost exactly, I hope everyone else checks them out, because that is accuracy right there. Something else for me to keep an eye on for sure!

Thanks again everyone, I wanted to get a decent update out before replying to you all, rather you had pictures to look at than just words to read. Well, you got both eventually right?!

14-08-2013, 23:47
Really nice, realistic painted. I look forward to seeing more. I agree that the Iron Hands shouldn't be just robots, it dehumanizes them.

14-08-2013, 23:58
Oh my god, that spartan is beautiful! I've always been put off from attempting the Iron hands, raven Guard and pre-heresy Dark Angels from a purely painting perspective because black is such a hard colour to paint well, and as you say there is a high risk of the end result looking a little dull. Not these, however. That black has such depth to it, and the weathering is just immaculate. I really, really love what you've come up with so far. :)

^^^ This about covers it mate.
The black is done very well and the weathering is spot on for a legion army. And I love to see more pre heresy on the logs popping up because they are so beautiful and never disappoint! Your's surely won't either by the looks of it!

15-08-2013, 12:57
Very impressive! The style is perfect and pretty much exactly how I would do Iron hands. Very nice indeed!

Looking forward to seeing what else you add especially with the drop site massacre book just around the corner.

15-08-2013, 21:01
What a brilliant style you have! Dusky, gritty looking black space marines often end up either over-weathered or 'grey' but these guys are just spot on! Consider me subscribed for more awesomeness!

18-08-2013, 17:08
Your Iron Hands are fantastic ! I love the black and your subtle weathering.

I can't wait to read your painting guide.

I would like to see more bionics, but I get your point.

Again awesome work, more please :)

18-08-2013, 17:48
The Spartan looks absolutely splendid. Very nice work indeed.

18-08-2013, 23:43
I really enjoy this plog! As much as I would love to go back to my old Imperial Fists, I think that I want to go the Iron Hands route with the Heresy era. That is in part because I really enjoy their color scheme, especially how you have visualized it, but also because I like the Mechanicus aspect and want to run a lot of them too. Who better than the Iron Hands to team up with the men from Mars? Keep up the great work, I find it very inspiring and will continue to watch your progress!

20-08-2013, 17:18

It's been some time since updating this thread, but commissions have kept me very very busy and sadly nothing else has been done towards the project. Well, that's not strictly true, I have another update to come with a certain pair of Praetors ready to go!

In other exciting news however, I managed to get an awesome friend of mine to pick something up from Games Day on Sunday :)

I lift my hat to you sir!

Excellent work on these Iron Hands. Take your time but PLEASE show us more.
(And that painting tutorial sound very nice to, looking forward to it.)

01-10-2013, 21:20
I check the forum every day hoping that you will post an update to this army. Just tell us how you painted the black armor please. The photos to go with the tutorial can wait until you have some spare time.

01-10-2013, 21:22
Any chance of a quick rundown of Ferrus' parts? Would be cool to see them, though Id totally understand if you'd already plunged into assembling him. ;)

01-10-2013, 22:43
Alright, I've had a lot of asks on the paint scheme and I feel really bad that I haven't put it up until now. The intention was to run through it with pics but understandably people are getting fed up with that! So here goes,

It's all current range citadel paints, any questions about terminology please ask, I've got to the point now where I have to write down everything I paint (and wish to repeat) or else I forget the method within a week.

Iron Hands Paint Guide

- Spray Black
- Abaddon Black watered, gentle, all over, particular focus on missed gaps

Brass Areas
- Warplock Bronze Base
- Hashut Copper Small Drybrush, careful
- Gehenna's Gold

Metal Areas
- Leadbelcher

Brass + Metal Areas
- Nuln Oil + Medium 50/50 Mix
- Agrax Earthshade + Medium 50/50 Mix

- Abaddon Black watered to tidy up.

All Over
- Sponge Ironbreaker
- Rough Edge Runefang Steel (like a line edge highlight but not continual, broken up to give the weathered look)
- Line Wash watered down Rhinox Hide (yes really, I thought this was a silly 'I'm artsy cause I shade black with brown' thing at first, but it does make a really nice difference to the finished model)
- Drybrush legs Steel Legion Drab
- Sponge Steel Legion Drab lightly all over (very lightly here, it's just to make them look slighty dusty)

- Khorne Red
- Agrax + Medium 50/50 mix
- Khorne Red tidy up
- Squig Orange
- Agrax line wash

- 'Ard Coat Varnish Area
- Apply Transfer with Micro Sol/Set
- Light Sponge Abaddon Black
- Light Sponge Steel Legion Drab

Bases (Sprayed Black with rest of model)
- Paint Steel Legion Drab
- Wash Agrax Earthshade
- Drybrush Steel Legion Drab
- Drybrush Karak Stone
- Drybrush Ushabti Bone in sections, focus on rock edges etc
- Mordheim Turf

Spray Purity Seal - This is really important for loads of reasons, I know a lot of people hate purity seal but I've honestly never had a problem with it, but anyway, here's why I use it,

- Protect model, obviously!
- It dulls the black very slightly, but this is good because it adds to the realism imo,
- It doesn't matt out your metals like some super matt sprays can,
- It changes the tufts to look a little more sun scorched to match the desertish/waste land istvaan style bases.

Hope this is okay for people, I'll still get a picture guide up in the future, I really enjoy this plog and the project so much, but like all things, it's finding the time! I'm sure everyone reading this appreciates that though.

Will answer any questions as best as I can as soon as I can.

02-10-2013, 16:35
[Tiu] - I took a few pictures of the parts then realised I could do one better,

Just found that on the inside of the packaging!

These are somewhat WIP, theres a few details here and there that need picking out, I'd like to get some more white on him in places as I think this makes a big difference on the other models in the army. I think his hammer could do with more to it as the brass and metal have merged into a similar colour, a friend suggested a bit more gold to mark it out as 'Fulgrim made'. Overall though, I'm happy with his armour, his face and the transition from flesh to metal on his arms (I was v nervous about attempting that!), so yeah, wicked model, great fun! :)

07-10-2013, 22:15
You've done a great job the army is going from strength to strength.

Ferrus is looking great. Such a lovely model. I think your friend might be right about adding some gold on the hammer it will make it pop. I wouldn't change the armour though it really suits him and what he is all about.

07-10-2013, 22:16
Absolutely amazing work! More pics please, a shot from above would help to see the arms better, but even from this angle the transition looks stunning. This is how FWs resin crack is meant to be painted. :D

Looks stunning! I love the model and you've done a fantastic job on him. I think you're right, maybe a little white and/or gold might add some contrast, but overall it's looking brilliant.

Looks great so far, I do agree that a little more Fulgrim pizzazz would help the hammer. How was he to assemble?

A bit annoying with the mech stuff and chains. Otherwise very easy.

Gotta be careful though when fixing the backpack. Thin parts.

A few spots of white would most likely suit him well, even if he's already amazing.

This army is amazing! I can't wait to see more stuff.

Hey everyone, it's been a long time since the Ferrus update and I'm here with another Primarch. This one is a commission piece for somebody that contacted me to paint up an Angron, after enjoying Ferrus so much, I jumped at the chance :) I can say with confidence that its the most amazing model I've ever had the joy to paint, possibly edging Ferrus, I guess because it was such a new experience.

I know it's not part of the IH army, but it's all Heresy, and tbh it's made me look at widening my collection to the Heresy models as a whole rather than just one army. Ambitious I know!

This is a really impressive looking army so far. You have made the armour interesting and Ferrus looks really nice.

After a long time working away I'm pleased to be back and painting! :)

I'm bringing this thread back to life with some pictures of a recently painted Fulgrim, painted to mimic the FW model as much as possible, while keeping it tied into the Ferrus done previously. I've tried White backgrounds out this time around and wondered what people thought!

Picked this guy up at Salute the other weekend! He's such an imposing mini considering he's 'just' in power armour.

Damn, that's a nicely painted Fulgrim, and I'm loving the Iron Warrior you've done too. :)

Not too sure on what's best background wise for photography, I think I'd need to see the same model on both to be able to tell.

I started an iron hands army about a while ago and have been looking for a good scheme to use, this thread has been really helpful and I've enjoyed reading it all.

I thought I would give your scheme a try on my new command squad, I'm not a great painter and I was wondering if you might be able to give me some feedback on my work so far. It's at an early stage so not much to go on but I just want to see if I am on the right track!

I have primed black, sponged on ironbreaker, and done some of the weathering/edge highlights, followed by the watered down rhinox line wash. Any tips or advice would be appreciated so I can try and get something close to the finish you've got on your iron hands!

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this. I would really appreciate any help, I am keen to improve and get my iron hands looking good like your army Jaer!

Thanks everyone for your compliments, I look forward to getting back to the Heresy stuff, it's where my hobby heart is at. Got to move through a mountain of commissions first though!

@Varyn - I'm flattered you like the scheme enough to use it yourself, your models are looking great so far. A few pointers to help with the rest of your force,

- Use a sponge to hit a few areas of the models with whatever you use to base your models. In my army that's steel legion drab.
- Any areas that you feel have had too much steel sponging, water down some black and paint it over, it wont get rid of the sponging, but it will make it less of a stark contrast.

- The details make the models from this point forward, I tried to unify my pallet somewhat so everything links together.
- Eyes are the #1 thing to get right as they seem to neaten the models up significantly - Khorne Red whole eye then do Wild Rider Red + Fire Dragon bright following the lower part of the eye (see my pics for the spot im talking about), then do a single white dot near the back of eye.
- Any leather = Rhinox Hide, nuln wash, highlight with gorthor brown
- Any Red details like sword hilts = Khorne Red, Agrax wash, highlight with squig orange

Nothing complicated at all, just base > wash > highlight done neatly.

The thing that really changes the minis is transfers. If there's 1 thing I'd recommend 100% its to get some of those, its not expensive (when talking in terms of an FW army) and they really make an otherwise muted colour scheme sing. To do them well you want to,
- Ardcoat any surface they are going on,
- Apply transfer and let dry,
- Ardcoat over the top,
- Then varnish spray over the top (I use GWs purity seal - I've never had a problem with it, but have heard others say it can go frosty in particular humidity's, so always test this on something before spraying your models).

Let me know if you need any more help!

Hi again everyone, I put some pics up of this guy a little while back, but wanted to see if a video would show him off a little better! Let me know what you think!
