View Full Version : Sons of Tyr - Seventh War-Company

23-08-2013, 14:07
Having lost the previous thread to the ravages of time (I can't be bothered to search for it) this is the new thread for my WIPs and finished models for my Sons of Tyr DIY for Codex: Space Marines.

First up is some experimentation in battle damage and weathering.

Nice colour scheme and the freehand(?) chapter symbol is nicely executed and pretty cool to boot. The weathering is particularly good, my favourite thing has to be the mud on the top of the back hatch of the Razorback, nice touch of realism there that never would've occurred to me. Promising start to the plog.

Super work! Lovely scheme, and the weathering and freehand is excellent! :)

23-08-2013, 19:06
Out of this world, love the colour scheme how was it achieved?

23-08-2013, 19:47
I can't remember where I've these models before, but they are as fantastic now as then! I love the muted, yet colorful scheme.

24-08-2013, 10:07
Really nice: the chipping is excellent. Have you used custom decals? If not, then the freehand is excellent too! My one (small) gripe is that you haven't drilled out the barrels for the guns, but otherwise it all looks great!

24-08-2013, 10:26
Really nice models!
Looking forward to seeing more!

Gorgeous color scheme and paint work!

Wow, well done. I'm really impressed.

Thanks very much for the kind words. Means a great deal to have your work praised, I think everyone can relate to that. Saardis, it's a transfer I made - it's the symbol of the Anishinaabek First Nation (native Americans) as their mythology inspired the background of this Chapter a great deal. I agree totally that I need to drill the barrels, between thesis writing and real life I haven't managed to get out to a hobby store.

Just a short update here; I managed to finish the multi-melta toting battle brother of Condor Cadre, Hawk Cadre's sister tactical squad. Here's some pics of the whole unit:

By jove old boy these a bloomin spiffing!
Lovely work here pal please keep it up, your an inspiration to all us lowly painters

26-08-2013, 22:14
I'm very interested on the background and fluff of your force, is it possible to read something about it?
P.S. I searched on the Anishinaabek First Nation but I didn't find much...

I love the way they all look like they're dealing with a rushing enemy force. So determined and dug in.

Whilst the rest of the Seventh War-Company is lost in the Warp en route to its next warzone, reinforcements from Madrigal have arrived:

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1010777_zps3937a1cf.jpg (http://s1269.photobucket.com/user/Mjolnir771/media/P1010777_zps3937a1cf.jpg.html)

These are the Mantic Hailstorm Cannons with modified barrels. Perfect Thunderfire models in my opinion. I kitbashed the Techmarines, Volund and Jahanu, from leftover bits and some Kromlech additions. I'll take better photos of both once they're finished.

For anyone wondering, the Thunderfires are a bit wobbly-looking because they aren't glued together, not even to their bases. This is for ease of painting http://image.bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png

A close-up of Volund and Jahanu:

Thoughts welcome!

Som great looking marines. Nice weathering and the thunder fire cannons look great.

Part of me thinks they might look better without the gun shield. It looks a little ramshackle & Orky.

Tech marines are brilliant conversions. Love the servo harness.

I love the techmarines. Could you please make some better pics of the harness and describe shortly what bits you used to get such a good result.

24-09-2013, 17:42
Loving the scheme of these guys. Well painted, nice weathering and I really like the bases.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I will indeed get better pics of the Techmarines + servo harnesses up when I've altered the Thunderfires with some bitz I've ordered. :)

Time for an update. I am slightly saddened at the lack of overall direction I've had in this plog, which has served as more of a dumping ground for stuff I'm working on rather than a methodical, frequently updated journey through the construction of my War-Company. Perhaps part of it's been to do with how I wanted to change the direction of the Seventh War-Company following the release of the Codex in September. I had previously played the Seventh as a static gunline supported by drop pod assault, which was a little anachronistic given that in the overall scheme of the Chapter (whose Index Astartes I am yet to update) the Seventh is supposed to fulfil the role of a linebreaker Company. Other companies, which I want to get to build at some point, include the Second War-Company which specialises in siege warfare, and the recently-decimated Fourth, who specialise in ship-to-ship boarding actions and void warfare, under the aegis of the Fourth's captain, the Master of the Fleet.

But I'm getting ahead of myself. The Seventh's captain, Ludvos Arkhan, holds the title of Master of the Vanguard, and the company he has inherited has earned the unfortunate nickname of the Ill-Starred. This is a fluff-representation of the fact that my early games with the Seventh - under the old C:SW - invariably resulted in slaughters or pyrrhic victories. Whether for better or worse, Arkhan has come into captaincy of the Seventh at a time when it is sorely depleted, morale is low, and the Chapter's marshals regard assignment to the Seventh as something of a death sentence. Having recently completed a tour of duty in the Deathwatch, Arkhan would make an ideal candidate for restoring the battered and dishonoured Seventh to an effective and fearsome fighting unit.

To this end the Seventh needs to be represented on the tabletop by rules that support its status as a rapid-strike unit, and I decided on a combination of White Scars and Space Wolves rules. The majority of the force can either deploy in drop pods (White Scar Sternguard/Space Wolves Grey Hunters) or on bikes (White Scars) with support units from either codex to suit. It's a powerful combination, but it also has a greater feeling of unity than Ultramarines and Space Wolves, or Ultramarines and White Scars, as I was originally considering.

So, here come the pics of a large segment of the Seventh's warhost, the as-yet-unnamed strike force I will be taking to a tournament at the end of the month, plus an Ironclad who's found his way in there. Unfinished and still a work in progress...

The weekend beckons...and so does the Wrath of the Titans, a 1750pt tourney taking place this Sunday in grim, rainy, dark (grimdark?) London, to which I will be taking the Seventh War-Company's battered survivors in a quest for redemption, vengeance, and murdering dead anyone who takes Terminators or monstrous creatures. So too begins my epic quest to assemble, undercoat and paint three colours onto an entire 1750pt Sons of Tyr force...in less than 48 hours.

Well, most of it's already assembled and basecoated. And one squad's even finished. Still, I have almost 750pts left to basecoat *at least*, so the next 24-36 hours are gonna be interesting. Good thing it's the weekend coming up eh?

Tonight's work has been quite fruitful: I give you the Stormhawk pattern gunship Storm Ghost, and the Shaman Lodge's representatives in the Seventh War-Company: brother-shamans Damas Tirekes and Torrek Myrdred. The Stormhawk was a right pain in the whatsit to magnetise - both wings are detachable, the underslung turret-mounted assault cannon is similarly magnetised (incidentally granting it full range of motion) and the hurricane bolters are also magnetised. I like it much better with the hurricanes so I'll have to find a way to shoehorn it into my lists

Damas Tirekes

I wanted Damas to have the look of a powerful warrior, someone whose psychic talents have complemented his talents in the art of physical combat. Should I ever run a Rune Priest with Biomancy, it'll be Damas. His runic axe is there primarily to kill Riptides in close assault and because it looks cool. Spent too much time smashing Chaos Marines with the power axe in THQ's Space Marine not to model somebody with a big choppa. Damas, as the younger of the two shamans, embodies the energetic, temperamental aspects of the magicks studied by the Shaman Lodge - he is the centre of the storm around which the battle rages, and fights his battles as an avatar of the wrath and fury of the storm itself.

Torrek Myrdred

Myrdred, by contrast to Damas, is the much older of the two shamans, although this has not slaked his zest for combat. He relies more on the powers he has learned to harness through the Lodge as weapons in and of themselves, unlike his younger companion, who uses them to bolster his own prowess in combat; Myrdred believes that the Warp-borne powers he wields are more than a match for any weapon, and will rarely use the shamanic staff he possesses unless challenged by an enemy of powerful stature indeed. (Yes I know I haven't put on the staff yet). I wanted to model Myrdred reaching out and force-choking someone on his bike - I imagined he would be the more proactive of the two in his use of powers, and possibly the more creative and inventive - he could as easily be lifting a foe from their feet as he could be scattering a foe's thoughts and lowering their guard, creating a weakness for his battle-brothers to strike a killing blow.

If anyone's played Myth: The Fallen Lords, I pictured Myrdred as the kind of caster who draws his pleasure from trapping and immobilising an enemy just like Alric does to Balor at the very end of the game - rendering the most powerful of foes helpless whilst his brothers rush in like a pack of wolves to tear him apart.

Storm Ghost

Haven't got much left to do on Storm Ghost apart from the detail work, and some work on the tops of the engines to cover up the magnets. I have included a couple of decorative armour plates on the flanks of the gunship which I don't think are visible, I'll try to get some better pics of them when it's painted. Next step for the Stormhawk gunship is the base - not sure what to do with it yet...

This last weekend I was fortunate enough to take first place at a tournament in North London, the Wrath of the Titans at Titans Wargaming Club. I had a great run of three victories with my Sons of Tyr, against Daemons, Eldar and Dark Eldar. Lots of cinematic moments in the games and some great opponents. I was lucky to mainly meet very sporting types in my three games and the tournament itself was really well run. I strongly recommend it if anyone in London is thinking of trying out tournaments - from what I understand Wrath of the Titans runs twice yearly and I'll definitely be going to the next one.

http://i1269.photobucket.com/albums/jj598/Mjolnir771/P1010848_zpsc96550d7.jpg (http://s1269.photobucket.com/user/Mjolnir771/media/P1010848_zpsc96550d7.jpg.html)

I took the Seventh War-Company in its mounted linebreaker configuration, backed up with drop pod and artillery support from the Company's veteran units and two members of the Shaman Lodge. The MVP awards went to my two Thunderfires, who racked up 60+ kills by the end of the day and decisively won me the last game against a Dark Eldar list with 40+ Hellions. Honourable mentions went to the Stormraven, who performed much better than netlisters will have you believe, the Grey Hunters (who brought a Bloodthirster down to two wounds in close combat with their knives) and finally Arkhan himself, who (thanks to the Khan's warlord trait) won me an extra 2VP in the last game by decapitating the enemy Warlord in a challenge at the height of the battle. The Sons of Tyr went on to secure Warlord Titan Aurum for the Imperium:

I really enjoyed the tournament and hope anyone reading this who also attended had a great time - it was really well run and I felt quite humbled to walk away with a trophy (let alone first place), it was not something I'd envisaged at all. There were some beautiful armies on display too - Best Army went to a very deserving Deathwing force which had its own converted Lion El'Jonson model - check it out here (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?303951-Champions-of-El-Johnson-The-Deathwing/page18) if you're interested.

Wow. This is what marine bikers should look like. Very cool mate. I was sadly too preoccupied with rolling 1s for TDA saves to take a proper look at your army (it was also quite a walk from the bottom table to the top :P )

Congrats on the Titan trophy its pretty... epic. That was a poor joke. But nonetheless.

Cheers dude, there was nothing much to see on the day as they were only basecoated :P

Just finished my test model for this force! Any thoughts would be more than welcome:

Maintain that standard across the force and you'll be winning best painted at the next one. He looks awesome. Like the dust/weathering and the bone armour sections are a great contrast to the grey. Very nice.

01-11-2013, 01:07
High praise indeed :) Cheers bud, I certainly intend to maintain a similar standard but hopefully improve. I haven't thought how to do the bike's computer screen yet - not sure if a rolling text readout or a radar scanner would be better.

03-11-2013, 04:12
Some very nice progress made since I last checked in. A bike-heavy force looks absolutely fantastic, shame we don't see more of them. I really like the modifications you made to the flier (I can never remember the SM flier names), and the magnetised wings is actually a really good idea as far as transporting them goes, may have to do the same. Just out of interest, how many magnets did it take to make the wings stay on?

I really like the two Librarians (and also the fact they're shamans). The image of the older guy drive-by force choking an enemy is awesome! Damas has a very nice collection of skulls to show off and I'm loving Arkhan, the CSM helmet looks good and brutal and the Emp's Champion's sword (that is it isn't it?) is really cool on the model, practically a spear when wielded by a genetically engineered superhuman hurtling around on a few tonnes of metal.

The painted biker is the same high level that originally piqued my interest in this plog, well done. The basing is very good too. I actually really like the idea of a textual display on the bikes, see a lot of radar screens but I'd never even considered a text-based one, could look very cool although might be a nightmare to do across the full 20-30 bikers. I like the fluff too about each company specialising in a different style of warfare, although I don't necessarily agree with it as it'd leave them rather limited in how they can approach a situation. But still, an interesting idea. Maybe this explains why the 7th got so badly mauled... :p

And lastly congrats on the tournie win! Hadriel Caine, I snorted tea when I read your epic/Epic joke, well played.

You're most welcome man. The text would get my vote for the reasons childsoldier suggests. Its rarely done and could be very cool.

05-11-2013, 10:40
Cheers guys! I've tried out the text readout as can be seen below.

When I wrote my conceptual fluff for the Seventh, I did not imagine that each War-Company would specialise in a single aspect of warfare exclusively to the detriment of all others. That would be pretty stupid. I imagined instead that certain War-Companies would be allocated recruits who had demonstrated aptitudes in the theatre of warfare in which the company Captain excelled in directing operations. They're still Space Marines, so are trained to operate in whatever circumstances the situation demands, but by developing specialists in each arena of warfare the Chapter only strengthens its ability to conduct operations in that it can draw upon particularly well-trained soldiers to match a specific situation. Even the Ultramarines have specialists, as the Company Captain titles suggest (Master of the Fleet [orbital warfare], Master of Recruits [guerilla warfare], etc). There are plenty of real-world examples of military units trained to serve as specialist units which also display generalist skills given the nature of their deployments, and I imagine Space Marines would be considered to be trained to elite standards even in those areas they do not profess specialisation in. I suspect Marines from different War-Companies would enjoy making jibes at their brethren with more esoteric specialisations - I imagine the Seventh's linebreaker units would enjoy a healthy rivalry with the siege specialists of the Second, for example :)

I finished another dude. There were a couple issues with this guy that are endemic to Storm Cadre (the current bike squad) as a whole; most of them have multiple bits from eBay rescues, very old stripped models, or glue-damaged bits. I've chosen to use these because in most cases they were salvageable but in one or two areas they were actually more badly damaged than I had thought and the paintjob didn't do a fantastic job of covering them. In general, I think the eye is drawn to the stronger areas of the model first, and these are intended as gaming pieces and not competition-level pieces, so that's OK for now.

I've gone with the text readout on the bike screens for these guys - you'll notice they look very similar. So much so that I'm mentally thinking of them under the names of Modi and Magni, names which will probably stick once I get around to naming the individual battle-brothers of Storm Cadre. (For those who care, Modi and Magni were the twin sons of Thor from Norse mythology, who went on to inherit Mjolnir after the events of Ragnarok and take up Thor's role amongst the survivors of the Aesir. Quite a reputation to live up to for two humble battle-brothers in the Chapter's vanguard company.)

I'm uncertain as to the blood effect on Magni's outstretched chainsword. Haven't used Tamiya Clear Red much before, mixed it with Nuln Oil here then went over it again with pure Clear Red - I think the matt varnish spray and the camera lighting flattened it a fair bit but I'm open to suggestions. Some of the chipping on the bone segments isn't showing up at all (or only the black bit is showing up) which is odd as Magni's got starker chip marks than his brother Modi, which probably means it's a result of the lighting I was using.

And finally a shot of the two brothers and their updated text readouts. I imagine they've just tag teamed an Eldar witch between the pair of them and are leaning to one side to observe the bloody mess Magni's chainsword made of the alien witch:

Cool create space marines chapter. Icon on shoulder pads is top, i really like battle damage and general color schem. So your work si awesome.

13-11-2013, 20:38
As a fellow marine biker player (although I only utilize 2 squads. Of 5) and a lover of grey (my own marines are a darker shade however) I salute you brother....on a more normal note...."holy crap dude"! These are awesome, the weathering is fantastic and the bone colour is perfect, not too bright yet not to subtle either. I've got a tournie on the 24th and am currently gluing and painting (frantically I may add) so that I've got my 3 colours on each model...but I stopped for a tea break and thought, hell ill check Warseer...dude highest praise. I just hope I can make my own marine force look half as good

Keep it up pal, inspiring work

14-11-2013, 12:11
Thanks a bunch lads. I really appreciate the kind words! Good luck with your tourney Nasha - am checking out your stuff atm, looks good :) I used to use a darker grey myself and then GW stopped producing Charadon Granite. Hope to have another squad complete here soon.

Haha I've not updated my log in awhile so I may take some pics tonight and upload em bud. Nothing near the skill you show but it will do me haha

Have made a little bit of progress over the last few days, not as much as I'd hoped, but c'est la vie, painting toy soldiers is a low priority at the minute. I've got the first two members of Talon Cadre finished, the youngest overall biker squadron in the Seventh War-Company, its roster comprised entirely of recruits straight out of the Watch-Companies guarding Madrigal.

Any thoughts welcome! Hope to have the rest of Talon Cadre finished this week.

I love the detail you've put onto the faces, although Marines going to war helmet-less always strikes me as a bad idea! Amazing level of painting for a gaming force. Top notch. Well done!

At last, two bike squads on the field! Talon and Storm Cadres are finished, fully equipped with the spoils of war - volkite weaponry liberated from an abandoned Adeptus Mechanicus stronghold on the Eastern Fringe. Gamewise they count as grav-guns, and as if I want to field these in any official tournaments all grav-guns have to be the same, I've redone both cadre sergeants' combi-gravs into combi-volkites.

Here's a couple of shots of the Cadre sergeant, Mauriac, and his combi-volkite - note the Night Lords head on the ground:

And finally a redone shot of Storm Cadre and its volkite specialists:

So glad to have two troops choices done at last. Doubt I'll be able to field a fully painted force for a game day I have planned out with two mates at Warhammer World next weekend, but let's see how the next week plays out. I'll be able to get one important model done for sure though - Ludvos Arkhan himself. Can't wait to get started.

Looking really good. You've missed a couple of barrels for drilling on the bike bolters and bolt pistols. I always miss them too but having done them on some its worth persevering. The chap with no helmet and a volkite from storm cadre is my personal favourite. Great painting.

01-12-2013, 01:57
Really Characterful models! Awesome work, keep it up!!

16-12-2013, 22:54
Cheers guys. You're right, Hadriel, I need to invest in a drill soon and I keep putting it off.

This weekend past the Seventh War-Company took to the field of battle once more, spearheading an assault into the maelstrom of warfare surrounding forge world Dark Sphere in southern London, where a 40k Doubles tournament was being hosted. After 10 (!) long hours of bloodshed and brutality, the warriors of the Seventh, alongside those of the Great Company of Ragnar Blackmane, emerged from the fray battered, bloodied, but ultimately victorious. Myself and Sohail187 (also on B&C) were fortunate to take 1st place in a field of 17 teams. Four missions - Crusade, Relic, The Pariah (the Relic but with a living target causing deep striking mishaps to everything within 12" and worth 5VPs if she's taken off the board) and Armoury of Annihilation from the new Escalation book. Our toughest match of the day was a team of Imperial Fists and Dark Eldar (Heresy! all allies were counted as Allies of Convenience for this tournament, I should note) who, simply put, scythed through my bikes as if they were wearing paper armour. Dark Eldar poisoned firepower is to be given great respect especially when you make some huge tactical errors early in the battle.

At the end of the day we were the only team to win all 4 games and took first place, although the reality was that it didn't feel like a sure-fire thing at all - our third game was against a triple Heldrake build which came bloody close to tabling us. Although we'd racked up 11VPs thanks to the Pariah being escorted off the field by Jackal Cadre, and Brother-Captain Arkhan decapitating the enemy Warlord (Arkhan follows the Khan's rules), we had seven models left between us on the field by the end of the game, compared to the enemies' 2 Heldrakes, 30+ cultists and zombies and Typhus. Very much a case of winning by playing the mission.

Throughout the day's combat, Brother-Captain Ludvos Arkhan led the Chapter's vanguard into battle against xenotic and heretical foes alike and, as already mentioned, took the head of one enemy Warlord to be mounted in the Chapter's trophy halls; he has been honoured for this deed with a finished paint scheme and (a first for me) a magnetised helm allowing him to be switched between helmeted and helmetless versions :)

Without further ado - the first HQ and 2 Troops choices of the Seventh War-Company:
