View Full Version : Why did they make stealth suites elite

Hello all,

Id like to know what all of you Tau players think about stealth suites. I do not think they suck just in their current slot (elite) I don't think anyone would ever take them. I would say they are not elite worthy when they have to go up againt a riptide or an xv8 battle suite... However, if you think they can be used competitively id like to hear how you would kick behind with them cause they are real cool. :)

Thanks

I completely agree. I used them one time against my brother when he was learning to play 40k for the first time. They popped a chimera (which was poorly placed.) on turn one, and then I lost 4 of them to return fire from the veterans that popped out.

They just don't do enough damage to justify the cost. perhaps a 3 man squad with a homing beacon in a farsight army, but even then I'd rather use those points on other things.

I'm not a fan of stealth suites. Stealth suits on the other hand I'm a fan of.

What would you prefer them as pray tell?

They're best in cityfighting, or on dense terrain maps where a riptide is overly cumbersome. In regular games they're useful for outflank melta and long range markerlighting in lower point games.

With the new Tau book, whilst they may not jump out at you like the shiny new riptide does, the role which they are designed for they do superbly.

They fun thing about the Tau Elites choices are that they are all probably on par with one another for what it is they need to do. As they aren't all rounders though, they won't see much use in tournament lists that aren't built around Shadowsun.

I love my stealth suits. My current army design has two max units of them supported by tanks and a riptide. No need for crisis suits when I can just blast away with firewarriors.

I think they should be troop but ill even accept fast choice.

I would much rather xv8 battle suits as with the help of shadow sun they can get stealth and shrouding and stay far enough to blow up sooo many things with the ability to target more then 1 unit and 4 missiles a pop they are so bas ass.

The Stealth suits while very cool are just not worth the elite slot for my choices. Riptide does so much on his own. and a unit of xv8 can be made to do heavy damage to almost anything whilst getting a 2+ cover for the most part with shadow sun.

My main concern here is other elite can pretty much do what stealth suits can and then some which unfortunatly mean the stealth suits will never be used in a competitive game with me :(

I would built an army if they were troops or there was a way to make them troops. Major bummer for the codex since they have such competition.

To the original question, Codex: Tau (3rd) had only a few units to spread around when it was first released. They had only a couple units, with Fast Attack (the logical spot for an Infiltrating unit) being the most crowded. It was an odd codex where a Fast Attack (Kroot Hounds) and Heavy Support unit (Krootox) were required to be in a Troops unit (Kroot Carnivores).

Fast forward to Codex: Tau Empire (4th) and the Kroot unit was brought inline, the Sky Ray, Piranha, Sniper Drone Teams, and a couple new Special Characters were introduced. Aside from the Special Characters, there were 2 HQ units (with 2 Guardian units), 2 Elites, 2 Troops, 4 Fast Attack, and 4 Heavy Support. If Stealth Suits (no 'e') were moved, the Elites slot would only have one unit available. While this is pretty much how people operated anyway.

With Codex: Tau Empire (6th), we have a few more Elite options, but I guess they still needed to be Elite similar to how Wolf Scouts and Dark Angels (4th) Scouts were. And probably for the same reason, it's the lightest slot in the codex!

I don't see the problem with stealth suits being elites.

Are they a veteran unit? Check.
Do they bring specialist skills for specific situations? Check.
Do they bring exceptional firepower at the cost of mobility? Uncheck -> not a heavy support unit.
Do they form the mainstay of a hunter cadre? Uncheck -> Not a troops unit, at least not without a SC unlock.
Do they have exceptional speed? Uncheck -> Not a fast attack unit. For a tau unit, their speed is average.

Elites is the most suitable slot for them. If anything should be moved, it's pathfinders. With their new gun upgrades, they would actually fit much better in HS or elites, but that's not what this threat is about.

If you don't like them, don't take them, but they have their uses. Infiltrating move and shoot long barrelled meltaguns? Yes please!

Well, first off, because they're, well, elite. They're not elite in the drop in and smash face way that say, Terminators or Riptides are, but they're still elite nonetheless. They're sneaky elites, the Tau spetznaz or commandos. They sneak into enemy territory, mess up the enemy's plans, then slip out again.

The other reason is that, as others have said, in their intended role they are very good. They're not a sledgehammer like Crisis teams or Riptides, they're a spanner to throw in the enemy's works. They're not meant to obliterate units left right and centre (though a full team of them cranking out up to 24 shots, as well as drones, is fully able to erase many units), they're meant to sneak around the other side of the table and be annoying. And by all accounts they're great at that.

Plus, come on, they turn invisible! How is that not awesome?

They still only have access to 1 meltagun per 3 guys. If they could take a couple more they would be a lot better.

Use target locks. That way you can melt the big thing and have the burst cannon mow other things down.

I always use them. My favourite unit. They never seem to do THAT much but my brother hates them so focuses on them too much. We had a game where
i was pretty much wiped out and we spent the rest of the game with him trying to kill the stealth team with his whole army. I think he took them out in turn 5 or 6.

My main issue with the stealth suits is that the new ones look like garbage. I much prefer the XV15's and don't see why they changed them.

Ehlijen said it best, but one could argue for fast attacks or have a stealth force with a SC unlocking them as troops. But their place was originally Elites and it's easier for them to stay there.

The old ones still exist. Use them.

Would just make it a bit easier if they released at least one XV15 with a fusion blaster. Hacking off the BC barrel and sticking on a FB one just doesn't quite work right, I think.

I know and do, but thanks for your rude and arrogant response, it was very redundant comment to add to my opinion.

I don't think you write understand what a rude and arrogant comment actually sounds like. He was just making a basic observation, your still allowed to use the old models, and the codex even mentions the old armour type, so if you prefer the old models than use the old models...
