View Full Version : Alternative Orc and Goblin Wyvern model

Like the title says, as I detest finecast. I could ebay an old metal one, but does anyone have ideas for alternative models? Using non-GW models doesen't bother me in the slightest.

I have the black tree design wyvern with an old warboss from a boar riding it. Looks ok and the model fitted on his back without converting needed (although a pendantic person may want to add a bit of fill). If you get it on one of their sales it's really cheap too

Someone told me the LoTR winged Nazgul makes for a great wyvern.

This is what you are looking for:

Name: Typhaggahw
Manufacturer: Mierce Miniatures (formerly Banebeasts)
Size: slightly bigger than GW one (Azhag)
Detail: awesome
Material: Resin

It is slightly higher priced (54 GBP), but worth it. Regarding the Azhag the Slaughterer model, the finecast transition was in this rare case very good one. The model has some serious gaps where greenstuff is needed and with metal even with pinning it is hard to keep it in one piece. not to mention that the metal version is quite heavy, therefore the painting gets really uncomfortable after a while. I bought my Azhag in finecast, and I really had no issue with him.

I own both models (Azhag and Typhaggahw), therefore can compare.

Mierce miniatures make simply the best models I've ever seen and painted... ever!!

I've used this guy from reaper for years.

@ outbreak

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't like the particular model :)

@ Why

That might not be a bad choice...

@ SVKBaki

That is nice, but formerly banebeasts? Were they the company that had something to do with Maelstrom games, or am I mistaken?

@ ZigZagMan

Not sure about it, would be hard to put a mounted/rider little guy on top of it.

Yes they had, their service is reliable now, I backed their kickstarter and the models are arriving as they are sculpted. They employ probably the best sculptors nowadays (Stephane Simon or Roberto Chaudon).
The controversy with maelstrom affected me as well, but these models are well worth.

Well, hearing that you were affected too but trust them helps, I might give them ago. Saw that bigass demon thing that would work nice as a blood thirster too.

See in your location your in Slovakia, what is the gaming scene like there? Had a friend from there working in Ireland a few years back but lost contact with him, he spoke of getting into 40k.

The daemon is Krull, I have him as well (I bought most of their stuff when it was on 60% off), he is much better sculpt than FW Bloodthirster (similar sized ).

The gaming scene here is a bit scattered as we have one flgs (wh related) in the capital city,no gw store in country, there are few groups of 40k and fantasy. In my opinion about 100 people for Warhammer in whole country

He looks awesome, and he's cheaper, and a similar size? Just thought of something to add to my Christmas list!

Hmmm... sounds like you guys have some potential, and its early days yet. I suppose if your closer to the border with Czech Republic you could get models there, assuming the GW store is farther away.

Troll Forged (http://trollforged.com/store/fantasy/orcs.html) also has a wyvern.

Titan Forge (http://titan-forge.com/fantasy_miniatures_drakskulls_menace_Undead_wyvern ) has an undead wyvern (to go with their undead orc army).

Came here to recommend the Troll Forged one too. Pretty nice and a good size, and the orc dude on top is pretty Warhammeresque too so you can use him if you want :)

Thanks for the troll forged one, didnīt know about it. It seems fairly priced and nicely detailed.

@Mage, thanks for the advice, I shop mainly on ebay or use discount shops like wayland and element games. (I used to use maelstrom a lot, RIP I miss them.)

Call me silly, but I consider the DE Dragon (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440048a&prodId=prod1250011a) to be a great start for a Wyvern. Just leave off the DE icons and the front arms, add some minor sculpting where said front arms where, and I think it would work just perfect.
