View Full Version : Which flyers are superior, Space Marine or Dark Angels?

I was just wondering what opinions people had on the subject, so which flyers do you consider better? The Stormraven Gunship and Stormtalon Gunship from Codex: Space Marines, or Nephilim Jet Fighter and Ravenwing Dark Talon from Codex: Dark Angels?

It's so odd that you brought this up, as I was just thinking about it myself.

With the Stormtalon vs. the Nephilim, the storm talon is definitely better when similarly equipped. The lascanons are the same, but the storm talon's assault canons are better than the twin heavy bolters and missiles on the Nephilim. While the Dark Angel's flier has an extra hull point and a cool special rule I find that the hover mode and escort ability of the storm talon is better. Plus, it costs 40 points less.

Have you actually seen the DA models. They look ridiculous :D

This is a joke thread right?
The DA flyers can't hold a candle to the codex space marines flyers in any category of anything.

No contest; the Dark Angel flyers are nigh-useless.

Wtf?

The DA flyers suck, and the SM flyers are pretty decent.

Stormtalon is an awesome little package. Its cheap enough that if it goes down you dont need to cry too hard and its weaponry is pretty good. I use mine primarily as ground attack though bs 5 tlAC and 3 shot autocannon makes quick work of light armour or anything not meq or better. The turret for the ac makes it nice and flexible too

The storm raven is a beast of a plane, its stormstrike missiles are what the nephilims missiles should have been and being able to multi target is great for engaging multiple enemies. I field mine with mmelta and lascannons for anti tank duties, it can, with relative reliabilty down 2 enemy aircraft in a turn. It also doesnt have the rear armour 'vulnerability' of the helldrake and valk.

Against these the dark angels fliers are poor competition, the bomber is quirky but doesnt do anything that a bike squad couldnt do better. And the fighter is rolling 6's to glance with its best weapons vs the 3 most dangerous targets.

But, yeah. The DA flyers are suffer so that it makes me think poor flyers is a design choice. Against an army with 'heavy' flyers they don't cut it as your anti-air option.

There's no accounting for taste, I guess. Well, he may be referring to the Dark Talon. The whole flying cathedral thing is a little silly. The Nephilim, on the other hand, is dead sexy. Easily the best looking SM flyer GW has produced to date. Much cooler looking than the Tonkatruck-looking Storm Raven or the flying egg.

Going back to the Dark Talon, I think one can look at the profile for the thing and miss the point. It's not meant to be an anti-flyer powerhouse. It's meant to synergize well with the rest of the list. I mean, come on, why else would it have hurricane bolters and a hover mode if not to hang out near the Standard of Devastation? Gets a little less ridiculous when those 6-12 twin-linked bolter shots becomes 24 twin-linked bolter shots. Just leave off the churchy bitz and make a piece of terrain out of them.

As a DA player, the DA flyers are much useful for me as I can use them in my list without allying :p
Plus the nephilim looks awesome (rule of cool, which is the most important rule!)

The DA flyers are the best looking flyers so far. However for the points, rules favor the generic SM ones.(surprise surprise)

It was a design choice, as the Codex DA was able to add feedback from the lessons learned about fliers in general with 6th edition. The Helldrake was written before, and it shows. It is rather balanced for say being a fast skimmer like in 5th, but as a flier it is a mess. GW just overcompensated with the DA fliers before levelling out with the Tau and Eldar planes which have their uses, but are not auto-includes into a list.

Well spoken :p. Sad part is, baledrake price wont be corrected untill new codex ( GW logic :shifty: ), so we'll have to wait 5+ years of playing with this flynig crap....

assuming of course they don't give the grey knights an anti daemon engine AA when they redo them. It's all about context.
