Hi all.
I want to know more about what armies people play and what they think of the different armies. The survey is extremely basic and won't take more than about a minute to complete. It will yield very subjective data, but that is also the aim of the survey, as people will have very different opinions based on wich armies they play and what meta/comp they are a part of. The goal of this simplified survey, is to make as many people as possible able to answer, and make the numbers more statistically correct. It will also rule out lots of misintepretations related to more advanced questions.

It will not give any empirical data on any army, but I hope it can give a good picture of what people generally think of the different armies. I will post the data collected if the amount of replies reaches a fairly high level:)

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PCR78DC

If you have ideas about how to make the survey better, or if you have questions about my aims please reply:)

Thank you for your time, and for helping me out:) I've gotten over 100 replies so far, and that is a good start. I hope even more people can help me out to make it more statistically sound:) How long did it take you?

Done!

It did not take so long, it would be nice to have a section where you can select armies you have no experience with.
I have not faced Chaos Dwarves since 5th edition.

Same here, hard to rate their power having not faced them since 1997

Man, it would have been a good thing to add the "no expierience with this army in 8th-ed" part. Not having it will contribute to a quite big uncertainty factor. 200 people have answered this far, thank you all for your time:) I will OFC post the results when I'm done. I will also try to make statistics show us which armies are considered the strongest related to how many people playing it, which can marginalize the "no expierience in 8th ed" problem to some extent.

Tried the survey and couldn't complete because it is too exacting in requirements.

I have all the armies except Chaos Dwarfs and play with or against all of them in rotation - not playing much recently though.
I've also got a list of all viable units placed in order of strongest to weakest, calculated mathematically which backs my assessment. :)

Assumptions (I assumed for the survey):
a) Discounting luck (especially in the magic phase) and assuming experienced/tactically sound and equal ability players
b) Assuming an equal chance of encountering each other army (because some armies perform better against certain other armies)
c) Assuming only the best all-comers army list is used - a tailored HE list will always beat Daemons etc

it is then possible to list the top and bottom 4 or so but that's about it.

Top 4 - WOC, Skaven, Ogres, HE, (not necessarily in order).

Bottom 3 - Tomb Kings (definitely the weakest), Wood Elves, Brettonia (on the cusp) - more or less in that order

Maybe you might want answers based on actual games but I don't thinkk that would create a good picture because TK in the hands of a good player will defeat WOC in the hands of a newcomer

Good luck with the survey but don't put too much reliance into it :)

Thank you for the reply DeathlessDraich. I agree to all your points, but my aim is not to find the objectively or mathematically strongest and weakest armies, but subjective thoughts put in a more or less statistical system, and what armies people tend to play.
For a more reliable "right" answer i would rely more on you, who have played all the armies, than on more subjective and situational answers, but I'm courious on all opinions. On a side note, the general trend of the replies looks very much like your own:)

Snue
25-09-2013, 18:13
@Ullis-That would be a good way to do it:) Sadly changing the wording of the questions make the data dissapear...
@Konate- I've got about 300 replies, I would like to get atleast 500 before I post them, but if the amount of replies decreases to a point that make >500 seem unrealistic, i will ofc post what I've got:-)

So i think it will be wrapped up sometime during next week:)

Here are the raw data of the survey with 403 replies:) As stated earlier, this survey is meant to gather subjective data, to see if there is any tendency of "powerlevels" across the different comps and metas. This is not meant to support a certain argument, rather to start a healthy discussion, based on more data than the average "tier-thread":) (The data was gathered up until the point of the new DE release)

Seems to align quite well with other polls you see. People can draw their own conclusions as to the merits of such an endeavour.

In deed Ullis. I wonder, what the results regarding Chaos Dwarfs would have been, if they were played by nearly as many people as the other armies.

Interesting results tables, I think you could do all sorts of interesting things with that data, for instance I'd like to know if the 20% of answers that put Lizardmen in the top tier is the same 20% of responders that play Lizardmen.

I quite like this way of doing the poll, the other one would have worked better if we hadn't been able to see each others answers and thus had been unable to criticise those who disagreed with us.

Well also I wonder how many people based their votes for lizards and Dark Elves on the old books. Which were quite powerful. The new books are diverse and have nothing that stands out as take this or you are stupid. But the old books had some ridiculous options.

I don't really know much about the new dark elf book, but I know I have actually been getting better results from the new Lizardmen book than I was with the old one. It kind of feels like they powered down the Slann a little and shared out the goodness among the other units in the book. Salamanders a especially nasty now they are spitting S4 templates instead of S3, and stegs are making almighty messes left right and centre with their D3 wound impact hits.

I'd also contest that the Slann hasn't been nerfed that much, his role has just changed a bit. The wandering deliberations discipline is really, really good, to the point where if I ever start a high elf army (which I won't) I would definitely take a lore master as my general.
