Well, decided on going to the UK GT in October. I haven't decided on a final army yet but this thread will follow the progress whatever it is. I decided to do an Urban Theme army. This would also double as my Medusa V army. I am thinking of either Iron Warriors or Imperial Guard.

Anyway, to start with I bought 2 Urban Basing Kits. These are fantastic!

Look what i got in the post this morning:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/cookiescrumble/Bases/DSCF0011.jpg

Opened them and was greeted with 10 pots of Basing Goodness:

Heres a closer look at the Resin rubble pieces:

I'm gonna have a play around with these tonight. I am gonna paint the models and bases seperately and pin the models to the bases later.

Bye for now,

Hello cookiescrumble,
nice pictures, are the resin pieces the amount of one box or one basing kit? And could you make pictures of them with a 25mm base for reference?
That'd be great!

Go guard you know you want to ;) .Those basing pieces look realy nice, might have to get some of them.

You get 12 resin pieces from each kit, 4 Big and 8 small. I'll have a bash at making some this evening. I'll do some 25mm and 40mm and if i do guard some 60mm for the sentinels.

EDIT: Thats the equivalent of one basing kit. You get 2 pots of resin rubble pieces, 1 Razor wire and 1 each of small and medium slate.

Had a play around with my new toy this morning. Had a look in my base bag and found 4 25mm and 4 40mm bases, heres what i got up to:

MTV's new show "Pimp my bases!":

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/cookiescrumble/Bases/DSCF0024.jpg

Added some of the larger slate pieces and resin rubble pieces:

With some razor wire added:

I'll probably get these done tonight and i'll post my progress tommorow.

Apologies if I'm the bearer of bad news, but they aren't on the GW online store anymore and there are none on the Maelstrom or DWSH webstores either.

I know they were a limited release, but 3 days?!

So your best bet would be to see if your local store has any left.

Got one of the bases painted today. Also got the others finished and undercoated. One thing i am gonna try, something a mate has done and looks really cool, is to glue static grass to the base before spraying. This can then be painted brown to give the appearence of dead grass.

Heres some piccies:

Finished base:

and heres the other 3 40mm bases:

Lets see some figures to go with the bases!! They are looking good though, but maybe tone down the gravel a bit- may just be the flash from the photo but they seem rather bright for a damaged city

I have black inked them since the photos were taken because i thought the same thing. I'll get some minis done soon.

THAT SUCKS.

Check out some rival companies for their bases... very similar stuff. But more expensive.

how to make razor wire: (a realy short guide)
get medium thickness wire
rap thin wire around medium wire
coil medium wire around thick pen.

Then basing kits are really two pots of busted slate, some rather cool resin peices, and some wire.

Gets some slate and wire and you are half way there. They also have barricade sets, which could be chopped to make bases, the resin bits are really quite good for bases.

Otherwise look for an Ebay store called Back to Base IX, a guy in Australia makes resin bases in a city fashion, also slate and ice and lava, but check it out anyway. Might solve some of the pain. Ebay.com.au you might need to look at.

Finally got some painting done. Well, the cats out the bag now then. I am gonna try and keep the army nice and fun to play with and against.

Anyway, heres some piccies:

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/cookiescrumble/Crimson%20Fists/DSCF0006.jpg

As usual piccies are rubbish! But you get the idea, just want the army to be one that is to a good tabletop standard and is quickly painted. I want to get a 2500 - 3000pt army fully painted by the end of August!

Good choice of army, are you going to base the army selection around the Crimson Fists' fluff?

The Space Marine looks great, a nice clean paintjob. A couple of things you might want to focus on though:

This could merely be the picture quality, as you mentioned, but I think you need to add more contrast to the highlights, as they don't show up clearly, which is a shame. Just mix in a bit more white, and don't be scared of putting it on, remember, if the highlight's too bright and garish you can go over it later.

Secondly, change that Purity Seal! It's a scroll! Paint the seal red and the scroll cream, it looks a lot more realistic.

Good job, I love the Urban basing, I'm doing it for my Iron Warriors.

Cheers for the feedback. I painted the seals differntly as i want them to look different. They have been highlighted but very lightly, don't like the extreme highlighting everyone else uses. You'll probably be seeing the army in person at the carnage social.

My fluff selection do you mean lots of hitty things, if so then yes :D .

I painted my purity seals as green wax, and then cream for the parchment.

Also in the Index Astartes book it says that sometimes purity seals are metal, so they could be red too. It does look a bit too odd maybe?

cookiescrumble
10-06-2006, 21:31
I don't think it looks odd at all really. It may look odd as it is different.

Each to their own - I suppose the Crimson Fists ought to be a little darker than their Ultramarine brethren, so if you highlighted them too much I suppose they could get mixed up.

Shiny, I look forward to it. :)

Hopefully I'll get my army up and ready as well.

Yeah, effectively. :p

What would be really cool and fluffy would be if you used Ork bitz as relics, to show their prowess at killing them above most other Marine Chapters. And, as many of the Marines in the Chapter served with the Elite Deathwatch for a time, perhaps you could have a couple of the Command figures of Veteran Sergeants with Deathwatch shoulder pads? Just a thought.

Good work once again!

Good ideas GH, got loads of orky bits, might do the whole army with orky bits such as shoulder pads and trophies.

Deathwatch is also a good idea.

Having just picked an Urban basing kit and comparing the contents to your piccies, it seems that there are at least five different 40mm resin pieces. I got an unlucky draw, getting only two different 40mm pieces, both twice. Out of the 8 small pieces, i got 5 different ones and 3 duplicates. I'm considering picking up another kit, hopefully getting more variants this time..

I'm not perfectly happy with the resin details, though. They are apparently casted in one-piece molds, and thus there is some 1-2mm extra resin in the bottom, making the pieces look unnecessarily thick and somewhat cumbersome. To make the pieces look smoother, you need to remove that extra 2mm, which takes a lot of time. A dremel might help.

Oh, and not to go too much OT, I'm looking forward to see your models based (or bases "modelled" ?).

Well i'm back again!

Basically more base building for when i buy my army in July. My brother gave me some basic marines and got some missile launcher bits, so i have something to work on at the moment.

Anyway heres some more piccies:

Bases for the assault marines, used some pieces from the CoD building sets.
