Provocative titles aside, I have a semi-serious question- what sound-track, if any do people have for their games? Any particular bands or tracks? Given we have a particularly cinematic hobby, music feels like it should be a part of that. From a rendition if Dies Irae, to heavy metal, I'd say there was decent choice out there, but what is your opinion?

I go with the classics: Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath. It is the devil's music.

Eve Online soundtrack. 6 hours of background music that provides ambiance but doesn't distract from the game.

Bolt Thrower. The answer is always Bolt Thrower. If you ask any World Eaters player what his army's theme song is, and he doesn't say "World Eater", you punch him in the face.

Mostly Symphonic Metal, especially from Europe. Of particular note is Amaranth, I Want My Tears Back and The Siren by Nightwish, Stand My Ground by Within Temptation (for when I'm on the defensive), and This Darkness by Sirenia.

Also of note is Trip The Darkness by Lacuna Coil and Cartoon Heroes by Aqua. Yes I am a Tau player, why do you ask?

Meanwhile on the Fantasy side of things my Wood Elves have The Last of the Wilds and Amaranth (again) by Nightwish, The Howling and The Truth Beneath the Rose by Within Temptation, Winterborn 77 and Beyond Life's Scenery by Sirenia, and Fragile by Imperia as their main themes.

Yep, thats the only answer you can give. Presume that you are into death metal...
Nothing more sneaky as playing "infiltrator" from Bolt Thrower when deploying your scouts......not!^^ But the song is so good :)

I don't know, I think if I ever got into Chaos Space Marines I'd go with Arch Enemy instead, especially if I went with the Black Legion.

I wanna Destroy you by the Circle Jerks
I want your Skull The Misfits
I kill children By the Dead Kennedys
Sex and Violence By Exploited (For your Emperor's Children fans!)
New Church By The Adverts

To name a few that I like. But I guess none of it is explicitly Sci-fi.

Nice. I agree with this. Also there was a modified Red Alert Soundtrack I had listened to at a FLGS that was pretty awesome.

Anything by Amon Amarth is always good. Victorious March for all those World Eaters players. Space Wolves could probably make use of that too.

When I launch my black crusades it's to the sweet song - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by the Proclaimers :D

For an invasion of Iyanden it would have to be Ghost Town by The Specials.

Judas is Rising. It's pretty much the Invasion of Terra. Replace "Judas" with "Horus" and there you go.

---

Lyrics from a site with lyrics:

White bolt of lightning
Came out of nowhere
Blinded the darkness
Created the storm

War in the heavens
Vengeance ignited
Torment and tempest
Attacks like a swarm

Forged out of flame
From chaos to destiny
Bringer of pain
Forever undying
Judas is rising

Eternal betrayer
Ice cold and evil
Taking no prisoners
Dark prince of the world

Humanity trembles
Enslaving you sinners
You can't beg for mercy
For none will be saved

The burden of sin
Echoes the prophecy
Ascending from hell
Forever despising
Judas is rising

Their faith is revealed
Deceivers are crying
By crucified steel
Evangelising
Judas is rising

The Dune soundtrack (David Lynch version). Soundtrack to Blade Runner. The Queen of the Damned soundtrack (just a damned good metal soundtrack).

One of the highlights of my wargaming career:

Last turn. 1 heldrake left, he's in hover mode, desperation move to take the 4 point objective on The Scouring, which will earn him a draw. I blast away with missile launchers and auto-cannons but he's still standing. Only choice is my last remaining Thunderwolf Cavalry, armed with a Thunder Hammer. I roll charge distance and just make it.

My hammer-wielding power armored Viking mounted upon a dire wolf charges the mechanical demon dragon, to slay it, and win the game for me.

Iron Savior. The right amount of bad-ass, epic and metal for your average 40k game. The lyrics being mainly sci-fi battle-themed really helps.

Anyone remember this game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000:_Chaos_Gate)?

Back in the days me and my buddy used the soundtrack from that game in our battles of 40k. And he happened to play Ultramarines and my army was Word Bearers :p

Iron Maiden is probably one of the best bands to have on if you're going for a 40k ambience. Much of their music deals with war, death, religion, and morality. Good candidates include The Trooper, Paschendale, Aces High, 2 Minutes to Midnight, Powerslave, Die with Your Boots On, and Brighter Than a Thousand Sons.

Anything by two steps from hell, though particularly their invincible or archangel albums are good playing music.

I play my games to the music of my foe's tears.

As for what to play when invading Terra, I think you could make the argument that blasting I'm a Little Teacup across the entire globe on a continuous loop loud enough that there would be no way to shut it out would be particularly disconcerting to the defenders. If you were more evil and ruthless than anyone in the 40K setting, doing the same with It's a Small World After All would win you the planet in under twenty minutes (ten if you've got those creepy dolls) without a single shot fired. Having been trapped on that ride not once, not twice, but three times (I tried to give the ride a chance to redeem itself after the first time when I was seven when 10,000 screaming doll screeched it me for three hours, but each of the two subsequent times it broke down so never again) I can vouch for the soul shattering effects that song can have.

Another good shout. The lyrics to Atlantis Falling (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMgttDMEPaM) seem particularly apt for someone invading Terra.

No music right now for me. When I play at home, it's with my son, and the dialog is priceless.

If I was to put on music, it would be something MUCH more neutral and thought provoking than aggressive. 40K, to me, isn't about raw aggression and adrenalin pumping. I'd be more inclined to moderately low volume EDM mixes.

Heh, Danish pop band from the 90s sing the Tau sound track. Now all I can picture is Ethereals in a mix of neon and glittery wigs singing this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jc7r_B0ZWDY) to Imperial planetary governors to get them to join the Greater Good.

Yup. Realm of Chaos, duh. Sometimes Rippikoulu - Musta Seremonia, or Cruciamentum - Convocation of Crawling Chaos. Lately it's been some Old Chapel - Symptoms of Possession for me, too.
