So Iím thinking of doing either a HH 1k Sons or Iron Warriors SM army and I was just wondering is it still legal to play them with the current SM codex? I donít want to spend all the time and money on an army that I can only use to play FW HH games with. I havenít had a chance to look at the new codex yet, but I heard that you have to choose traits of one of the chapters in the book. What do you think would be good counts as rules for them? Naturally I think the IH would be good for the IW, but Iím not sure what would be good for 1k Sons.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I would personally go with UM for thousand sons, tiguirus is just another level above every other space marine librarian. You also have the variable UM chapter traits which you can use as an when the turn takes you, a bit like tzeentch taking an early interest and mysteriously making the right units have advantages at the most oppurtune moments.

Iron warriors can use iron hands if they want to go all mech and cyber or imperial fists for the improved devestators, its your call.

You can play whatever chapter you want. if you paint your space marines silver, and you call them iron warriors then thats what they are.

Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons = Grey Knights, as every GK is a Psyker, and each of the GK unit specific powers correspond to a 1k Son conclave specialty.

Pre-Heresy Iron Warriors = Iron Hands or Iron Fists, as either of them (or just plain UM) give you great siege craft units and special rules.

Camman's suggestion for Tigurius and UM works, as does Sam Spade for a Scarab Occult army with Codex: Grey Knights. jeffersonian's is a good idea to use IW as fists, as though philosophically different have the same specialisation.

@ jeffersonian000

You mean Imperial Fists! :)

Slight note of caution on this: it's not as easy as you might imagine to use a 30k army in 40k. They have very different equipment and unit sizes. You'll certainly have to have some guys who are only around for one or other army, which will cost you more. A majority will be ok of course.

I've really struggled with my 30k world eaters. I suspect my IF and my SW legion armies will be much easier.

My World Eaters though can only use about 3/4 of the units and it isn't the strongest army list no matter what codex I try to use. I think the best has to be using the Chaos Space Marine codex.

Best comparison I can do is

HQ - Chaos Lord with mark of khorne

Elite - 3 x chaos contemptors

10 terminators

Troops - 10 man chaos sm squad with lascannon and flamer
repeat that 3 or 4 times

10 man berzerker squad

Fast - none

Heavy - 2 x 4 autocannon havoks

That's leaving out a 10 man squad of destroyers, a few more heavy weapons, a lot of rampagers (who could possibly count as berzerkers), a champion and a master of signal, probably a boat load of tactical marines.

Yeah my fists would probably only work as something like marines with space wolf allies, so that I'd be able to use my 10 cataphractii as wolf guard terminators - though that still wouldn't be a great fit.

Honestly, most people will let you play 30k armies in casual games, using the usual FOC. Tournaments not so much, but you'd really struggle to make even a vaguely competitive 40k list using 30k counts as stuff.
